Kingdom: two seasons

When I thought nothing more could be done with the Zombie trope, this joint Netflix-Korean production proved me wrong. The zombies are more like ghouls since they can run and you must watch the series through its first two seasons to find the explanation on how this contagion spreads and where it originates from.

Set in the 17th Century by my estimates; soldiers have flintlock rifles, mentions of a Japanese invasion several years; the empire is at a critical crossroads. The emperor married a woman half his age and when (and if) she gives birth to a son, there will be a definitive heir. There’s a couple problems with this scenario. He has an adult son Chang is the current crown prince but he will be ineligible due to his mother being a concubine. The fate of such children tends to be exile or execution. The other dilemma is the empress’ family, the very ambitious Cho Clan that is slowly taking control of the day-to-day administration as its leader purges the neutral bureaucracy.

Now the emperor hides away in his inner palace where few see him through the machinations of Hak Joo Cho (the clan’s leader). It’s unclear if the emperor died of illness or was murdered (it’s irrelevant), he’s now a ghoulish people-eating monster who awakes at sunset to feed. Hak Joo just needs everyone to believe the emperor is alive until the empress gives birth, then he will be the real power behind the throne via regency.

The plan goes awry when a victim’s corpse is sent home to their original province where the national famine is pretty intense; Korea may have repelled the Japanese invasion yet its aftermath continues to plague the non-aristocratic citizens. Due to their desperation for anything to eat, someone decided to cook the previously mentioned corpse shortly after its arrival, claim it was game and now flesh-eating zombies (or ghouls) arise from the diners.

By some coincidence, Prince Chang heads for the affected province, seeking a doctor who used to be his father’s personal physician. Maybe this doctor can say why he was dismissed, dispel the mystery in the palace. Instead, Chang is thrust into a position of leadership he never wanted as he bands together a ragtag army of peasants, his bodyguard, “monks,” a female doctor and a Hak Joo’s bumbling nephew in a plan to save Korea from the duel menaces: zombies and the Cho Clan.

I stumbled upon this thinking it was Chinese, maybe a typical youxia or wuxia piece Netflix chipped in on. Once I got the right audio to sync up with everybody’s mouths, I was pleasantly surprised it was Korean. It explained the Chinese-like fashions while the swords were definitely the Japanese-styled katanaKingdom has the right mix of Action, Drama, Intrigue and Suspense to keep you hooked…letting the “next episode starting in …” button kick in to see what’s next! I was very lucky. I was addicted a week before the second season rolled out so I didn’t have to wait very long to see how it would pan out. Much like You and Westworld (a much later story for me), Kingdom does have a satisfying conclusion with an opening for a possible third season should Netflix do it.

If you hate this, tell me. I will reimburse you your time in snacks based upon on how many episodes you managed to complete. Hell, I would recommend you just finish it and maybe you’ll change your mind if you aren’t convinced. Maybe The Walking Dead could regain its mojo by having the writes see Kingdom.

How non-empathetic people deal with illness

Not that Depression is ever gone be it a mental state or the Republicans driving the World Economy into the ditch every generation. But despite the Pandemic, I’m feeling pretty decent because the worst of everything surrounding the divorce is truly over…well, just not Somara’s bite into my 401K. Once that is finally over, I will modify my site’s volume number.

Happy Caturday for May 2020

I am so guilty of all of the above happening to me with the numerous kitties in my life…and I wouldn’t have it any other way. When you hear their contented purring and they stare at you with half-awake eyes, you know they love you back.

LEGO® Droids play Star Wars Anthem

With this being May the Fourth be with You weekend, it’s only fitting to show off this guy’s LEGO Droid project I saw via a LEGO rumor site.

Welcome May and this month’s header

Onward to what will probably be our second full month of being in the Pandemic Shirt Storm so what better Header is there than a Horror movie! May 2020 is also the 40th anniversary of the Friday the 13th series. Now I’m not a fan of teenagers getting laid and then being murdered and mutilated by a goalie-mask wearing killing machine. However, Jason is the franchise which made this subgenre a thing even if it was preceded by HalloweenThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho. Turns out, Peeping Tom from 1960 is considered to be the flick which started it all. My point is to still celebrate something which is a cultural milestone for better or for worse. We’re living in conditions I would consider worse so why not go with a fiction we can count on not happening.

As for Horror. I prefer the less gorey, more traditional monsters: Dracula, the Invisible Man, Frankenstein’s Monster, etc. These are harder stories to pull off too. I am coming to appreciate Folk Horror through Midsommar but I was always like anything involving Science Fiction and/or Post Apocalyptic subjects.

“Stay in place” orders are over in Texas, wait n’ see

We’re far from being out of the woods yet. I plan to be still wandering about with my newish mask and a two-ouncer of hand sanitizer. When I don’t need to be anywhere, I’m going to be home, enjoying my rejuvenated hobbies (Go Stars!). Allegedly Georgia lifted theirs too soon and pow! up went the cases of CV-19. You can always count on the Deep South to wreck America’s IQ curve, Florida too. I wonder if it’s too late to sell the two idiot magnets back to Spain.

The only thing I’m grateful for is maybe the LEGO Store at Barton Creek will be open for the May the Fourth be with You sale. Fingers crossed and then I promise not to push my luck despite Pinballz being open at 25% capacity. I have serious paperwork to do given a paycheck to calculate into my finances.

June 2015 was the record holder at 58

Let’s hear it for boredom again as it helped me get cracking on writing new stuff for my site. Namely my backlog of reviews for movies and TV. Or would it be the Pandemic banning me from going to Alamo to see new things to fill up the backlog?

Either way, April is the winner at 61 posts, including this one. May is a longer month and if this keeps up, maybe I can push it further.

My rebuttal to NeoLiberal panhandling

Yesterday I received this in the mail since the smug Sen. Foot-in-Mouth believes he is the Democratic nominee by default as reality is catching up; the sexual harassment accusation, the outing of who is advising (now show us your true colors Warren supporters!). To me this is the usual hat-in-hand request for the small-donor money Sanders was successful at getting and the usually fakery to claim he’s listening to Progressives. I know he won’t because the last two Democratic Nixons didn’t and the NeoLiberals think we have nowhere else to turn, ergo, our votes like Unions, Teachers, Minorities and Women can be taken for granted. Well, my answer above is a sound “Hell No!” and since this is on their dime, I’m mailing it back. I doubt they’ll read it. I’m confident the DLC/DNCC has a special device to detect checks and cash in the envelopes without having to open them. If “Joe” wanted to know what’s important, he would’ve been paying attention during the debates.

So don’t bother trying to blame me. Remember who the real culprits are, cowardly “moderates” and “centrists,” which don’t really exist. You can’t be “moderate” with 26 million people unemployed. You can’t be a “centrist” regarding 27 million without adequate health insurance. There will be no “third way” when the Earth is 40° C on average every fucking day.

Road to Perdition

When you think of Tom Hanks, I don’t think Road to Perdition readily comes to mind because he’s been so likable for several decades. Therefore him playing a regional gangster’s muscle was a stretch with audiences. I really wanted to see this due to its source’s author, Max Allen Collins. I can’t remember when he took over but I knew him for years as the guy writing the Dick Tracy comic strip in the Chicago Tribune.

Spoiler rule is off, the movie was released 18 years ago

Tom Hanks is Mike Sullivan and the story is told from his older son’s memory, Mike Sullivan Jr. What dad does for a living is a mystery which in gangster terms, “he provides,” tends to be the answer. Junior is at that age when he’s more curious than smart so he stows himself in his father’s car one evening to see what “talking” to an associate means. Thanks to the local boss’ son being a sociopath, Junior witnesses what Mike does…kill people. However, the local boss and his son decide the Sullivans are now a liability leading to life on the run.

I’ll leave it there.

Great performances as expected from Stanley Tucci as Frank Nitti (wrong build though), Paul Newman as the local boss, Jude Law as a hitman and a younger Daniel Craig as Paul Newman’s idiot son. The movie’s failure was likely attributable to audiences not wanting to see Tom Hanks involved in such gore-filled shootouts. It was pretty tame even for 2002 standards. I personally enjoyed it. The father-son dynamic was what made it work.

The other Dynamic Duo of the Seventies!

A whole new generation of kids was going to be introduced to Blue Falcon and Dynomutt next month via an upcoming Scooby Doo movie but the Pandemic killed its theatrical release; it will be out digitally though. For me, I grew up with these two in the late Seventies as they were part of Scooby Doo’s defection to ABC when the broadcast networks had Saturday Morning cartoons. The “seriousness” of Blue Falcon is what drew me in because I was still going through my superhero phase. In the long run, Dynomutt is why I loved the show. I wasn’t alone. These two have had numerous appearances via the Cartoon Network and [adult swim] to keep them in everybody’s consciousness.

  • Dexter’s Laboratory: Blue Falcon came to Dexter to repair Dynomutt.
  • Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law: Blue Falcon joins the law firm, pushing out Harvey’s hopes at becoming partner and then being framed for “murdering” Dynomutt with a photocopier.
  • Cartoon Network did some short-lived Flash shorts with them.

Can’t wait to wear this at a convention, see how many people recognize BF and dog blunder.

New fridge at Chez Maggi

I hope the 1990 version of me never finds about how 2020 version of me was stoked over this new fridge. Admittedly, I did some shopping online to compare and came upon this one because I love the door on the right side (facing me). It’s like there’s a built in cooler for stuff to drink. Those in the know too, yes, I dragged ass for 11 months to replace the dead one. It was worth the wait. As its six-hour minimum cooling-off period was about to happen, I hit HEB to get some groceries I had been avoiding for months. Below is a movie demonstrating its key highlight or feature.

You: two seasons

In light of Pandemic Theater, I chose to add to the other element involved with getting through the boredom but let’s face it, binge watching was something we were already doing years ago. Netflix and other streaming services didn’t invent it though, they just exacerbated it, made it more noticeable through the convenience factor. No, binge watching existed years earlier:

  • Twilight Zone marathons
  • the VCR
  • DVDs (I often did this whenever a new season of The Simpsons was released)
  • the DVR
  • …then came Netflix

So I made a logo to feature shows I’ve recently blown through, I may apply it to some in the past as I also made a subcategory for TV…or I may just stick with it only from now on.

Initiating Bingewatch is something I got pulled into by an ex-girlfriend who was an addict of all those Lifetime flicks the cable channel does yet I think they’re more focused than the Hallmark Channel‘s weird fare.

You is something Netflix poached from Lifetime and is based upon a book, hence the author is involved. I was willing to give it a chance because I saw Greg Berlanti’s involvement. You may recognize his name, he’s DC Comics’ version of Joss Whedon, bringing the superhero line success on “the small screen” given how inconsistent the property is with theaters.

The story is about the obsessions and misadventures of Joe Goldberg. Book store manager officially, creepy stalker in reality. I find You to be a cautionary tale about how easily our personal information is accessible as shown in the first episode when Guinevere Beck enters his store to buy something. Besides being smitten in an unhealthy way, Joe begins the process of being “Johnny on the Spot,” and eliminating romantic rivals. What makes the show interesting, sometimes funny, is how not everything goes to plan, Joe isn’t Dexter or Patrick Bateman (American Psycho). Being Netflix, You can show things only HBO/Showtime would dare so be ready to squirm a few times.

That’s all I can write. Anything further would give it away, especially how the producers managed to create a second season due to the first being rather self contained. I would just argue towards giving You a try, it breaks out of the restrictions Lifetime would put on the execution due to their standards and practices. It also managed to keep me guessing which is hard to do with most experienced, media savvy audiences.

A Sunday project mostly completed

Today I put together an interim desk to get through this crap. I dislike working from home but if I have to, well at least I have decent gear. Doing my job with this will be much easier than from the couch. I hate slouching. Makes me look even fatter when I have to be in a videoconference.

Will I keep this as I remodel the house? Maybe. Let’s see how it goes. My ideal plan is to go to Ikea, find a layout/setup and tell the sales person, make my house look exactly like that! Similar to the veterinarian’s house in Schitt’s Creek.
