The Guardian‘s Top 50 Christmas Song list

You can check it out at this link. I will warn you, their selections lean toward what the UK is more familiar with. I also give them credit for having the good taste in not listing super awful ones: Paul McCartney and U2 always comes to mind immediately!

I was only familiar with nine of them and could only approve of three: Pretenders, Pogues and Waitresses. Still find RUN-DMC’s annoying alongside Wham! Dexter Freebish did a much superior job on the latter.

Here are my favorite 20, some have been featured on past mixtapes! They are in no particular order because I consider them all equally excellent.

  • “Shouldn’t Have Given Him a Gun for Christmas” – Wall of Voodoo
  • “Merry Christmas Emily” – Cracker
  • “Christmas is Coming” – Payola$
  • “Christmas with the Devil” – Spinal Tap
  • “Nothing for Me” – Muffs
  • “Santa’s Beard” – They Might be Giants
  • “I Want an Alien for Christmas” – Foutains of Wayne
  • “Santa’s Gonna Kick Your Ass” – Arrogant Worms
  • “Christmas at Ground Zero” – Weird Al Yankovic
  • “All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth” – Dread Zeppelin
  • “December Will be Magic Again” – Kate Bush
  • “I Farted on Santa’s Lap” – Little Stinkers
  • “Christmas in Heaven” – Monty Python
  • “Merry Fuckin’ Christmas” – Denis Leary
  • “Santa Can’t Stay” – Dwight Yoakam
  • “Thank God it’s not Christmas” – Sparks
  • “Fairytale of New York” – Pogues
  • “Christmas Wrapping” – Waitresses
  • “I Did it for the Toys” – Dance Hall Crashers
  • “Snackin’ Santa” – Go Nuts

I’m open to others if you want to share them with me.

RIP D.C. Fontana

Growing up with reruns of Star Trek like most of Gen X, you’d see D.C.’s name often in the credits. What you didn’t often know was that D.C. was a woman which was a rarity with TV writing, especially it was Sci-Fi! Women writing Sci-Fi novels had been going on for years, and they were likely using initials or a dude name. She also two personal favorite episodes, “Journey to Babel,” this one introduced us to Spock’s parents, the Andorians, Tellarites and the Orion Syndicate; another with great aciton/comedy is “Friday’s Child.”

After Star Trek was cancelled, D.C. obviously went to other programs but she returned to be involved the Star Trek Saturday-morning cartoon and Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Her expertise was even welcomed on Babylon 5!

Thanks for everything D.C.! You contributed a ton to my childhood, numerous afternoons of watching Star Trek (it was a long Summer being stranded at Grandma’s house) and a love of your creations. You helped break down the gender barrier on both sides: proving to men that women can write Sci-Fi well and to women, it’s perfectly normal to enjoy Sci-Fi.

My contribution to this year’s Teddy Bear toss

One upside to having all those Pinballz points is that I often have enough to score a toy for the Stars’ charity thingy. Last year it was Rick & Morty, this time I figured a kid would love to have the breakout star from Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t even know if today’s children even have bears given all the choices they have even at Build-A-Bear. Well, it’s always good to contribute because I was a lucky kid at Christmas.

RIP Lil’ Bub

Another cat who found fame through the Internet has passed away due to her genetic makeup (dwarfism, bone issues). Lil’ Bub’s size and lack of teeth (why her tongue hung out) is what made her so endearing. Much like “Grumpy Cat,” her owners utilized her celebrity to help less fortunate animals.

That’s one thing I envy about animals, they don’t care nor are they aware of being seen as unattractive. They just go about being themselves. However, I’m not sure if “Grumpy Cat” and Lil’ Bub were sweet because of all the attention they received or it was a natural trait.

In the end, it doesn’t matter. Lil’ Bub was a cutie in her own way and she will be missed.

What’s with the December 2019 Header?

It’s December now. Shouldn’t I have a Christmas, Solstice, Festivus, whatever, theme in the Header space and not what appears to be the Eagles’ Hotel California album cover? Well, I did piece together a GIF-based header because my host and great friend Jeremy raised the upload limit. Then I decided to launch my return to consistent posting after the virtual dust settled on December 1 (today). The well-made, creative GIF just didn’t seem appropriate given the somber, reflective mood I remain in.

So why Hotel California? Certainly not for the title track. I chose it for the final track on Side One, “Wasted Time.” It wasn’t a mainstream hit, probably got played on AOR stations when they were allowed to use “deeper tracks.” However, to me it remains one of the perfect breakup songs and captures the zeitgeist of the Seventies when divorces were happening like a pandemic; it’s what I felt like when I was kid.

Obviously, I have been playing “Wasted Time” in my car from time to time to reflect my overall mood. After 43 years (when it debuted, so it has been 34 years for me), the closing lyric continues to make me well up…

So you can get on with your search baby
And I can get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find
That it wasn’t really wasted time

Such painful and true words from Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Jim Ed Norman while sung by Don when he had the vocal range he lacks today. Even if you hate the Eagles, regardless of the overrated Coen Brothers movie, give this song a try, you may hear my point.

Maggi Picayune back on track now

For starters, if anyone has been following the site and ended up feeling disappointed, I apologize. Same goes for those wondering why their RSS readers continued to show nothing new.

I’m going to use the new month of December and the close of the current decade (The Teens!) as an opportunity to close the gap, stay on top because…

…that’s correct, as Mandy from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy stated, the divorce is over but I’m waiting for the ink on the decree to dry.

I’m not out of the woods yet, there’s the refinancing of the house to get Somara off the mortgage along with giving her cash to equalize matters (90-day deadline, it’s in motion with phone tag). Texas doesn’t have alimony which is a blessing and a curse. A blessing for husbands who often are the breadwinners for they only have to cut things in half and walk away, they don’t have to subsidize their ex-wives until they re-marry or worse, the ex-wife has a permanent boyfriend. It’s a curse for wives when there isn’t much to split, so it’s a double whammy to the poor. Child support exists yet I’ve heard it’s relatively easy to dodge which is not a surprise in this Banana Republic, home to another failure of Kapitalism’s self-regulation if you heard about the latest chemical plant explosion.

Besides this being the fastest divorce in my circle of friends and relatives, like Miley Cyrus/Cher speed, Somara and I will remain in touch and friends. I remain concerned about her health and well being. I’m not a complete SOB. Our marriage came to an end mainly due to us drifting apart. It wasn’t an acrimonious, knock-down, zero-sum-gain war as the majority of divorces turn into while the poor kids are pawns. We both wanted to get it over with and start rebuilding. What it will entail for Somara, probably a new house in which I’m helping her pay for. Not an angry comment, just a fact and as I said after my car Vixen was totaled, it’s only money. Me? I’m going to be spending time in 2020 getting my 18-year-old house into better shape plus you’ll see more surprises.

Lastly, the site will have a high number of stories on the home page as I fill in the gaps of the past with entries I had to table to focus on living, working overtime and/or prepping for the divorce.

Holiday shopping and cards off to a good start for 2019!

My annual tradition of a three-day weekend to get out the blasphemous cards started off well and I hit the key merchants I use to give gift certificates to local friends with children: Rogues Gallery and Pinballz!

As always, there are three cards I have to choose from. One for those I know with a good sense of humor regarding religion, just funny and something universal for the people in my life with thinner skin. You know, if Jesus was all that, hanging out with hookers, lepers and tax collectors, then he would’ve had the humility to laugh at himself.

I had a pretty good Black Friday too. My Flyers totally clobbered the Red Wings but then again, the Red Wings just aren’t the team they used to be in the Aughts.

Watch your mailboxes if you’re outside the Austin area.

Spirit of 1984 should be the title

Pretty bitchin’ homemade shirt someone had at Pinballz. A Terminator T-something, the kind without the human covering riding a luck dragon from The Neverending Story for those who don’t recognize the white creature. The wearer’s husband has good Photoshop skills so I gave her my contact information since there’s a couple mash-ups I would love to have made!

One hundred days against Baba Yaga!

FINALLY! I managed to get through the day 100 times without becoming seriously ill or contracting a serious case of the fuckits. Getting across the finish line this week was relatively easy since Thanksgiving puts America closer to the slash or E mark on the give-a-crap meter.

See if I can achieve another C on my calendar as I like to refer to it as.

Two hundred and fifty gym days!

Pretty good milestone achieved yesterday but the 2020 nightmare isn’t going to happen due to there being only 30-plus days left. Three hundred will have to be next year’s goal.

LEGO® devours Brick Link

I don’t think this is going to be a merger of equals and I remain skeptical about how it will work out. Brick Link has been the place for LEGO Master Builders and casual builders (like me) to get pieces or out of print sets without getting gouged to the Moon. The former element really comes in handy when you just need certain colored bricks and pieces LEGO has part numbers for in the instructions but refuses to put them lego.com; often infrastructure pieces on Star Wars ships.

I should’ve seen this coming because at Brick Fiesta 2019 I found out LEGO was involved with Brick Link’s ten special anniversary sets; I have the Science Tower. Thus, LEGO made these ten sets par as a contemporary LEGO City or Ideas Set price wise.

I understand LEGO wanting to protect their copyright/trademark (the buzz phrase today is “intellectual property,” property? yes in how greedily it’s defended, intellectual? an exaggeration created to make the greedy sound more intelligent and benign, they’re neither) yet corporate greed is more often the motivation.

For example, Sony/MS/Nintendo were pissed off at not getting a dime of the used video game stores’ revenue despite now sticking us $60 for a new game. They’ve dipped beak enough. It was a huge reason why they’re booby-trapping the overpriced media and/or moving toward downloadable-only games. Sharing? Screw that! Only Commies share a game with their friends and relatives! Say it again with Thurston Howell III’s voice, it becomes more accurate and indiscernible from The Economist‘s free podcast!

Meanwhile, this has the stench of LEGO pushing to do the same dick move no matter how much they repeat their litany about “quality” and “consumer confidence.” Brick Link handled issues quite well without the Danish Empire’s involvement. What I fear on the horizon will be several things:

  • Cease & Desist on anyone selling those hard-to-get Technic-like parts along with the ones from licensed sets.
  • A LEGO tax on used pieces so the greedy shareholders get some of the action.
  • Forcing resellers to abide by a MSRP on used sets.

In return, two things may save us. The European Union unlike the US, will go fight on behalf of peasants worldwide to save Kapitalism from itself…again. It loves to eat itself and throw the world economy into the shitter every generation. The better solution comes from the Internet, another, improved and less bullshit site will pop up with the Brick Link faithful fleeing to it. Forcing LEGO into another game of Whack-a-Mole to stop people cutting out the greedy and useless middle man Kapitalism thrives/depends on.

Fingers crossed I’m wrong but given the English-speaking world being governed by an orange-colored chimp, an ‘everyman’ poseur (Bush of the UK) and an Aussie Nero, it’s hard to be optimistic without being bilingual.

Netflix “cancels” MST3K

Sigh.

Some days I can never figure out what Netflix’s logic is when they give up on good shows like this while cardboard drama House of Cards required Kevin Spacey’s pervy history to bring that to an end. I will just have to give them more credit since their track record of keeping what I like remains better than Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Adult Swim or the Cartoon Network.

I hate how this had to wait until Thanksgiving which is the traditional stretch to binge watch Joel/Mike/Jonah with ‘bots to mock a string of terrible flicks. It also puts a tad of gloom over the fun when Kathy and I see the gang live next year at the Paramount.

Let’s hope Joel can find the Satellite of Love a new, appreciative home because I think Jonah, “Synthia” and the current ‘bot voices have been worthy successors to what began 30 years ago.

I adopted a new kitty!

Now that my divorce was finalized recently, I went out and did something I wanted to do right away…adopt a second cat to keep Isis company. Cats do better when they have a companion. Since finding her sibling(s) is impossible given her age and how I found her, I went to Austin’s Humane Society to get a new recruit for the first time in 19 years. It’s where I fell in love with Molly so I wanted to give another cat the same opportunity. This guy temporarily named “Sean Connery” and I hit it off pretty well. He got to come home!

Unfortunately, the poor guy is freaking out. He did fine for an hour and now he has disappeared to demonstrate how his species are masters at hiding from us loud, smelly primates. Given time he’ll be fine. The upside is Isis not picking a fight, hissing or chasing him around the house. That was what happened within minutes of Molly coming home and Wicca was immediately spotted. Scary but it was a sight to behold how quickly those two creatures could run.

More as it happens!

My friend Amy and I went to a Big Night dinner!

Italian food is my favorite cuisine and I think it would be even I were zero percent Italian. After my one-year exile in Raleigh-Durham, I gained a much greater appreciation of it through a great restaurant called il Sogno (The Dream) because its focus was on what these European people really eat, namely in Naples. In the States, most Americans think Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill and Pizza Hut are accurate. They are and they aren’t, in the same manner America serves Mexican and Chinese. Immigrants from all these respective places adapted their dishes to what was available here. A stealthy example is Texas fave chicken-fried steak being a modified German dish by the anti-secessionist settlers of Kinney County.

Anyway, I digressed about how my own frustration at people looking at il Sogno‘s menu confusedly (and sometimes walking out) is best expressed through the underrated 1996 movie Big Night, a story for another day.

If you’ve ever seen this great, hilarious flick, then you’ll remember the ‘breakout’ star in the last act, Primo’s incredible main course…timpano. I’ve wanted to eat this for years. Thankfully a speciality bistro in the Mueller One Percenter Gentrification District called l’oca D’oro (the Golden Goose) offered it this week! Their version wasn’t a giant “drum” in which every customer received a slice of (see the movie), they made individual portions along with a multiple-course meal. The whole shebang came with appetizers (fresh, mozzarella cheese), fish, olives and bread. Big Night played on the main wall in the background and a live band entertained with appropriate music.

I cannot wait to return to l’oca D’oro next year or whenever they offer this again! I may have to find some cheaper, frozen food or whatever substitute to get me through!

What a crust! It resembles a delicious pastry.

Cut it open and holy buckets! Deliciousness inside!

Rest in Peace Angel

Angel loved sleeping on the piano

Yesterday, my friends Alaire and Tom had to say goodbye to their last remaining kitty and good friend Angel. It was sad for me too because I had known the furry little guy all his life too. Angel amazingly lived as long as Nemo (17), a rare thing given that most male domestic indoor cats live between 12-14 years on average.

Although I wasn’t his favorite human, some cats are fickle and/or only bond with particular people, I thought the world of Angel. There were nights he would eventually capitulate by cuddling my lap…the power of persistence! Other times, he treated me like his babysitter/step parent. The most memorable demonstration of this behavior was the  most stressful Summer evening I can remember in the last 20 years. Angel and Tiki snuck out of the house which was dangerous for them thanks to coyotes roaming around northwest Austin. Tiki was always easy to catch, he would grow tired of the “chase me” game within 10-20 minutes and you’d could grab him. Angel decided to just keep his distance in the dark, dark open areas meowing his version of “You’re not my dad!” How I worried and feared he’d meet a horrible fate. Obviously he survived. He was as cunning as he was stubborn.

Farewell you little furball. May you have numerous comfy spots on the celestial couch beside your brothers Jack, Tiki and Shadow. Give Nemo a cat high five with his good paw.
