St. Reagan & Tricky Dick’s racism shouldn’t be a shock

This week, a long overdue recording of a conversation between two major assholes responsible for the rise of Orange Foolius and American inequality finally got released. It has been held back for many years, I think at the request of St. Reagan revisionists. If you hadn’t heard it, the two are chuckling over a racist comment St. Reagan made about African representatives at a UN gathering.

Tricky Dick’s racism was obvious in his “law and order” appeal to get elected alongside the Southern Strategy. The former was a plan to put all the uppity minorities, namely Blacks, in their place. The latter was draw in Southern Democrats who were pissed about LBJ’s efforts to put teeth into Civil Rights and voting laws. It means his claims about being a Quaker were crap too. I know they’re pacifists first but he’s the most famous one to be a blatant bigot.

St. Reagan’s racism was more well documented during his time in Hollywood, as governor of California and the apex before being president was where he launched his 1980 bid…Philadelphia, MS, the place where three Civil Rights workers were murdered by the cops/KKK (one and the same there). His choice of location was code to the NeoConfederates that he planned to weaken Civil Rights even further.

Just putting it out there because Americans and their corporate-owned media have a bad habit of praising two of America’s worst presidents. Going to China wasn’t genius, it was inevitable for anyone in the gig; and the other didn’t win the Cold War, the Soviet Union went broke before we did plus we’re continuing to suffer from the aftermath of his paranoid world view. Why do you think people are fleeing violence from Central America. The weapons both sides gave those armies/rebels in the proxy wars remain.

Kathy R wearing her favorite video game

A gift I scored for my friend Rev. Kathy because this is her favorite cabinet game whenever we hit Pinballz. I recently looked up Rampage‘s history too. I could’ve sworn I started playing this in high school but I was wrong, it debuted in arcades in 1986 so the earliest I might have encountered it would be after I graduated and more likely when I was a freshman at Marquette. I did hit arcades whenever given the chance in Bismarck and Winnipeg yet for some goofy reason, I have a false memory of seeing this at a Peoria mall two years earlier. Why? The game begins with the monsters tearing up Peoria, IL and if you’ve seen that boring place, it could be an improvement.

Back to the star! Rev. Kathy loved it and couldn’t wait to sport this. Who wouldn’t when a friend saves you a day of laundry!

This was never funny…

Regardless of 2016’s outcome. Ugh! Then again, I shouldn’t expect places such as Party City nor those temporary Halloween supply joints to have any sense of good taste. I don’t think even the EU finds much humor in the world being screwed.

Brick Fiesta Austin 2019! Part One

A vendor had these awesome torsos we had to have and use to put our avatars into the spirit!

It was Austin’s turn again to host the annual Brick Fiesta, a celebration of all things LEGO, namely a chance to check out the state’s MOCs (My-Own Creation), shopping for official-unofficial accessories (I got a Star Wars set for $50 that went for $80 new!), shirts and a chance to meet other adults who share our thing. This post is going to be mostly pictures though, if you’re on a non-WiFi connection, wait. Even if you have unlimited data, it would still look better on your computer, iPad, OK, that will work.

Huge castle, from the front.

The back of the same castle with numerous chambers and gags.

The hosts of YouTube’s Beyond the Brick with our avatars. These guys are awesome. They attend practically every LEGO event.

The Texas Capital building. Over 30,000 bricks in the making.

A smaller version of the capital building next to something I forgot to note.

What Notre Dame looked like before the fire.

Austin’s Ann Richards Congress Bridge. Notice the bats in the lower right.

UT’s Tower. Must be during the day, nothing is lit up.

Someone reused the heads from the Yellow Sub set to make these tribute to their early days.

NEVERMORE!

Texas continues to lead in stupidity

Nevermind The Onion‘s ongoing dark joke about America, the Laboratory for Bad Ideas (the Texas Legislature) and Gov. Shitbag signed a series of laws to give Ammosexuals boner pills. These will soon go into effect, allowing morons to carry guns into even more places thinking this increases safety from shooters be they White Supremacists or Psychos. Given most Ammosexuals, there isn’t much difference.

Let’s dissect the logic of the NRA, GOP and DINOs with say, Iran and Israel’s demands for having nuclear weapons. We all know Israel has them…for protection and Iran is back on track to getting theirs courtesy of Orange Foolius. I forgot about North Korea for a moment too. According to them, they don’t feel safe from their enemies, real and/or pretend, without these big, atomic, world-ending cock surrogates. Now as nuclear weapons have proliferated from just the US solely having them in 1945 to at least nine countries today, is the world any safer? Given Pakistan’s unstable and unreliable behavior, hell no. Yet Iran and Saudi Arabia continue to argue the case on how they need protection from each other and from the US with the former. The latter is rumored to be receiving help on this though Orange Foolius and his slumlord son-in-law.

Obviously the GOP and their flunkies sing a different tune as they slam their fists down on the table saying, “We can’t allow Iran to get this and it’s Obama’s fault North Korea did,” conveniently forgetting Dubious’ role in North Korea’s success.

To quote Bill Hicks, you’d have to be a fool or a Communist to think there was any correlation. More nukes? Unsafe and it’s more likely they’ll get used in anger. More guns? Oh, uhhhhhh, good guys will stop the bad guys. Seriously? I’m pretty sure there were armed people in El Paso, after all, the asshole shot up a Wal-Mart, a place Ammosexuals save big on bullets. I want to close with a famous incident in 1981 when there were a slug of “good guys” who failed to prevent an untrained “bad guy” from almost killing the GOP’s patron saint for last four decades.

Made a trophy with a toy and super glue!

Since Megan has clobbered us all lately in exercise challenges via Challenges (iOS app) due to her dedication, not necessarily my slacking, I made her a little trophy to celebrate her three-month streak. They key to getting the Playmobil ninja to stay on the disc was to spread the super glue around her feet, not under them. It is also my hope Megan puts this in a safe place because kids can’t resist playing with little figures and why not, Playmobil alongside LEGO rocks!

Revenge of the Nerds

This month’s theme is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Revenge of the Nerds. It remains one of the best Teen Sex Romp movies made in the Eighties; Animal House appeared five years earlier and started an avalanche of these.

According to co-star/breakout actor Curtis Armstrong, it was originally released July 20, 1984 but maybe not in every market at once and I’m going with my flawed memory of that year…I remember commercials plugging it later. Regardless, I didn’t see Revenge until 1985 when it was debuted on HBO/Showtime and videotape; for those under 40, in ancient times, you had to a wait a full year for most things to reappear via those venues.

Being a teenager and obviously not a popular one; I attended five high schools, played D&D, wasn’t into “real” sports and preferred that “faggot music” on MTV; Revenge was a favorite flick alongside Better Off Dead and Weird Science which were movies with the underdogs winning. These underdogs differed in they were the “losers,” not the underrated sports teams of Hoosiers or every other boring-ass sports movie. The nudity and dirty jokes didn’t hurt, most teenage boys can’t resist seeing naked women.

One downside of course has been how it hasn’t aged well given most people’s evolving positions regarding the actions the Nerds took to exact their revenge on the Alpha Betas (Jocks) and Pi’s (Cheerleaders). Not all the credit goes to the #metoo movement, it’s more of an “ohhhh, wait!” realization intelligent people had years later much like how everyone began to cut out the socially acceptable cruelty towards homosexuals when Rock Hudson revealed his AIDS diagnosis. Today, Gilbert would be in prison for rape or sexual assault over tricking Betty in the funhouse. This isn’t to excuse the scene but the rationale then would be “Oh, it worked out. She decided to date him afterwards and in the third movie they’re married. Besides, Betty was an indirect culprit in the Alpha Betas’ attacks on the Nerds.” Still wrong, yet the majority overlooked it in the Eighties as people in the Thirties did with blackface. I also haven’t forgotten how the Nerds would all be arrested for the panty raid, or worse if their video surveillance on the Pi’s was discovered. The stereotype jokes involving gay Nerd Lamar is another eye rolling concern. Beyond losing their power over the university, the Alpha Betas aren’t punished as badly as their female Pi counterparts unfortunately.

Again, I’m not trying to mount a defense for Revenge any more than I would for Blazing Saddles. They’re both movies offering a window on the past and what attitudes the general public actually held. Instead of trying to erase these things as overrated author Brett Easton Ellis accuses Millennials of doing, we should keep them around as reminders of what we shouldn’t backslide on and not forget the context of some jokes (don’t get my started on how PC schmucks miss the point with Blazing Saddles). Another aside, my argument isn’t applicable with tearing down Confederate monuments. As a Yankee, those “losers-get-a-trophy” abominations are an affront on numerous levels. Now, if you put aside the disturbing elements, Revenge is a hilarious movie in a crowded genre filled with absolute dogs. I finally saw Porkys some years ago and thought, the kids on the playground made it sound more interesting and funny, or maybe they were talking about something entirely different because it sucked.

I do want to make another point, especially when The Guardian had an article claiming how misogyny is a part of “nerd culture.” I disagree. A true nerd or geek never forgets how much being excluded or mocked hurts, therefore, they strive to be inclusive. At times, we screw up but another aspect is owning up to our mistakes and doing what we can to address them. I for one, have to remember my blind spot with Trumpkins. Unless they’re unrepentant racists, I need to be more patient and forgiving of them. Desperation makes people do stupid things.

Revenge of the Nerds has a special place in Texas too. Part of the film was shot at Texas A&M over the Summer of 1983 with the rest at Arizona State (where my nephew Nick goes). I think it was John Goodman’s first big role before he became more famous as Roseanne’s husband.

Today, the “nerds” have had their revenge through all the ubiquitous technology and popular culture (superhero movies, Sci-Fi/Fantasy shows and D&D acceptance) we live with. Ergo, there shouldn’t be any need to remake this film until FAANG are entrenched  in a century and a new nerd culture arises.

GQ recently published a good story about the film too.

Dental Work Extra: Root Canal not needed!

This morning I saw a specialist I was referred to by my dentist to make sure my anterior teeth 7-10, the busted ones on my upper jaw, are alive.  After a couple X-rays, including a really cool 3D take on my mouth, the specialist tested the test by tapping, a weird chewing thing and cold sensitivity. They all passed!

What does this mean? No root canal needed to get around the issue. I did ask, what is this exactly. I’ve heard the term for years but never understood what it entailed. He gladly explained that the process involves severing the nerves in the tooth so reconstructive measures can be done. Pretty extreme.

What should follow? In the specialist’s opinion, crowns will do the job just fine and they are strong enough to handle Texas cuisine: steak, apples, chicken and certain candies.

Travis Morin officially retires

This announcement wasn’t a surprise, it was when he’d announce his retirement because I doubt no other AHL team would pick him up. That is the downside of a development league but I’m more than happy to see the team Travis skated with for our first 10 seasons will be honoring him in a couple ways:

  • He will be working with the team’s operations division; it’s like being a coach who assists the players develop specific skills.
  • The organization will be retiring his number, 23, with a ceremony on October 19 this season!

The above matters are the least they could do for him too. He leads the franchise in numerous scoring records, not a guarantee if you play for the same team over a decade. Travis also won the MVP award during the season the Stars swept everything on our way to winning our first Calder Cup. I look forward to the next stage of his career.

Thanks for everything Travis. Your presence was crucial in getting the Stars to be a successful team and take root in Central Texas for years to come!

RIP: Russi Taylor

Sad to hear that voice actress Russi Taylor passed away over the weekend. She had been the official voice of Minnie Mouse for over 30 years. To me Russi will always be the voice of Bart’s intelligent frenemy Martin Prince. On The Simpsons, she also did Terri & Sherri and German exchange student Uber. Before the prime time show, Russi pulled quadruple duty on the original DuckTales as Huey, Dewey, Louis AND Webagail.

Thank you for all the funny characters Russi, namely Martin’s great zingers. You will be sorely missed.

Thanks for the wishes and all, mellow day

Took it mostly easy yesterday. Had to get up relatively early to have some finishing touches done to my new car, goop they put on the windshield to protect it from all the damned rocks and gravel here. Then I went to visit the lady who is covering for my therapist while the main person who deals with my crap is on maternity leave. A great lunch at Pinballz in which is was National Wings Day! I also had my best time ever on the go-kart track thanks to the recent resurfacing. I never had to let off the accelerator once to avoid spinning out!

I kicked back to write, yap and read. Then Somara and I finished up with another stuffing meal at Maggiano’s. I forced the room in my gut to have the spumoni for dessert.

However, there are other good deals I need to swing during the remainder of the week in Austin since people here know how to treat you well. Especially through my gregarious nature to build relationships.

I also want to thank everyone for their cards. I always love receiving things in the mail!

Firstborn: 35 years later, still great

Darned Hulu, finding favorite movies of mine with a looming deadline! I’ve also come to suspect that if the movie is getting yanked from the service in a few days, they’ve reduced its bandwidth or something. Every time, be it 1984 or this, it chokes in the last 5-10 minutes, forcing me to finish on my computer or iPad.

Firstborn is a personal favorite but it isn’t very well known to the general public. I remember it being released in the Summer of 1984 near the end of the season. Didn’t get to see it in theaters since I was busy trying to get my first job and my parents were forcing me to return to Catholic prison, aka private high school. First viewing was probably cable. I knew I always wanted to see it due to Talk Talk being in the soundtrack. I’ll get to why I love this film later.

Despite Firstborn being set around 1983-84, it’s timeless because divorces and their aftermath continue to happen as per this story. The focus is on Jake, the oldest child of a recently divorced couple. His father left about two years ago and barely seems him or his younger brother Brian (Corey Haim’s big debut!); dad’s law firm keeps him rather busy. These days they live in the New Jersey suburbs with their mother (a ditzy Terri Garr, not a big stretch) who got the house in the settlement. They go about their lives as normally as possible: school, friends (the wild one being Robert Downey Jr.), lacrosse practice, Jake dating Lisa (Sarah Jessica Parker), getting a driver’s permit, etc. Then they receive a call from their estranged father. He wants to have dinner with them. Everyone gets dressed up, ready for a fancy place. Unfortunately, Dad didn’t tell Mom she wasn’t invited and she receives the news in the worst possible way…the woman Dad dumped her for is waiting in the car. Mom hides her disappointment and insists on the boys going. They go and Dad drops a couple more bombshells: he’s marrying again and moving to Montreal. Oh, he’ll still be their father and if they need something call. The news is shared with Mom which sends her into a funk. A funk resulting in her dating a really, really shady guy named Sam (Peter Weller at his finest as an asshole).

Within a month, Sam has moved in and Jake senses something isn’t right about him. None of his stories are consistent about past employment, he adds locks to the house he has some odd mood swings and weird friends of his come by. Mom will have none of these suspicions from Jake or Brian. She needs a win in her life and she’s an adult. Eventually, Jake finds out what is happening, especially as Mom starts to abdicate her responsibilities; Sam got her hooked on cocaine and he’s an aspiring dealer.

This is movie is 35 years old so what I wrote int he above paragraph isn’t a spoiler anymore.

Here’s my favorite part of Firstborn. Jake decides that he needs to get rid of Sam himself without enlisting his father and saving his mother from herself. Having discovered where Sam hides the drugs in the master bedroom, he steals it and hides it around somewhere he often goes necking with Lisa. When Sam’s associates discover Sam doesn’t have the stuff, they leave and call him an amateur. Sam blows his cool-guy facade, starts to beat Mom. Jake intervenes, tells Sam he took it and won’t find it. A SUV versus dirt bike chase ensues with Jake losing. The drugs are recovered but Sam appears to have the upper hand. Mom financed the purchase, unknowingly doesn’t matter because she can be arrested for conspiracy. By now, Mom has regained her courage and asks Sam to leave. A fight breaks out, Jake is on the ropes yet he finally gets his opening as he kicks Sam in the junk and proceeds to beat the hell out of him with these closing words as he pins Sam to the floor, “Stay away from my family or I’ll kill you.” YES! A Gen X’er beats the shit out of a Boomer, something I continue to feel strongly about. You could say it’s a metaphor about the generational gap we’re continuing to duke out.

In all seriousness, if you’re in my age bracket, aka Generation X, give Firstborn another look over. It’s not as tight as John Hughes’ high-school tales nor as quotable as Better Off Dead yet it belongs amongst them as the films about how Gen X grew up in the Eighties. Its relevancy is mainly in how Gen X was the first real generation of kids to live through the wave of divorces which began when California initiated the no-fault divorce. As for the whole matter involving divorce, there are better films focused on the topic.

La Roche-Posay My Skin Track UV Sensor

Firstly, as I’ve had to tell some strangers…this is not a camera! Walking around with a disguised camera without warning people is a dick move. Why do you think those other people were nicknamed Glassholes. This is a cool little ultraviolet sensor made by the French skin care company La Roche-Posay. How it works is pretty simple. You clip it on your clothes (I have it around my collar) or attach it to a necklace (Somara’s method) and carry on your day. There’s a free application you download into your iPhone or Android to synchronize it with. So either the app will remind you to connect it to update or you start your day with it. Your phone will have the latest data on what the UV forecast is. Meanwhile, the sensor tells the app how much exposure you’ve had as a percentage based upon the weather, time and if you’ve applied sunscreen. If you’ve reached 75% or higher, then you need to do something or get out of the sun for the rest of the day.

How have I been doing? Pretty well. I have an indoor job and I tend to be an indoor person, especially with how damned hot it is in Austin. I have hit double digits a few times due to activities keeping me outside: cleaning out my old car at the tow lot and a scavenger hunt at the Domain.

I highly recommend buying one if you live in the South, Southwest or West. Just check the tech specs first. Somara got the first one I bought because I stupidly forgot I had only an SE. Now I have an Xs and it’s awesome!

I still got it with this machine!

Spent a good chunk of my day at the Classic Gaming Expo in downtown Austin. It wasn’t quite the 70,000 square feet of video games I was hoping for, more like 20K with 50K of vendors, mostly people selling legacy gear; more about it later. Pinballz was kind enough to provide some machines set on free play. I was going to do multiple players with this guy and his son but he walked off after I hit the start button. Thus, I played all four players quadrupling my chances to beat the 3.8 million for a “free” game; even when I don’t have to pay, I’m trying to defeat what the machine’s computer has set to be the difficulty level. The keys to Bugs Bunny’s Birthday are launching the ball up to the back into the cyclone ramp to rack up 10K-500K points or an extra ball; launching the back up the right ramp into the left area in which you can add points to the Tweety slide that dumps into the left drain toward a flipper; or the hardest, getting the ball into a pit/trap when the nearby light is flashing 50,000,000 if you get it in there. Player 3 got the opportunity and I nailed it! From then I was chasing the high score left behind by this JP character. Obviously I failed. At least I left behind my initials at the convention to tell others, watch out for this MAG fellow. I’m just glad I didn’t let Bugs Bunny down on what is his 79th birthday today.
