New “ironic” outfit for Colby

While strolling about Austin’s downtown store, Wild About Music, killing time between Moontower showcases, I found a onesie of the Rolling Stones’ icon. I thought it would go well with my Muppet® Colby, appeal to his sense of irony in wearing a “Classic Rock” band’s shirt. There’s a little bit of my personality in him. I like a handful of Stones stuff but I tend to think they’re overrated because they’ve never been a strong, original act and ever since Tattoo You, they became The Rolling Stones, LLC due to touring being their only revenue stream. OK, merchandise would come second but most of us are in agreement, it hasn’t been their music anymore. Can you name a song still played on the radio after Tattoo You? Right.

Back to Colby. Like me, he openly expresses a great disdain for the geriatric rockers but unlike me, he wears their shirt to be ironic. I wouldn’t bother wearing anything of them unless there was a joke involved, say, the Simpson version of Mick yelling “Simpson!”

Let’s see when our Princess Cutie production team gets back together to make some new interactions and Colby can sport this look.

Introducing the Maggi Motors GoKart Model 1!

Memorial Day be the official kick-off for Summer but it’s also when Creative Brick Builder has its holiday sale! All the random LEGO pieces you can fit in a good-sized box for a mere $4! A way better deal than LEGO or its retail stores because you can choose from numerous types of pieces and colors, not just a container full of 2 x 4 red bricks since that’s all LEGO offers this quarter. Last time, I used the instructions for an Old Republic starfighter I’ve mostly completed. This recent weekend, I took a manual from a recent Friends set I got on sale which focused on a garage with two go karts and tried to see if I could make my own. As you can see, I was fairly close. Mine is a couple shades larger for I found out later, CBB’s owner saves the Friends standard chassis for special projects, I think birthday parties. Mine still rocks and I can go off road unlike those weird, Friends minifigs!

The Maggi 1 (beta) has a JATO to help you get ahead on long stretches of straight track!

What’s next for the Maggi 1? Getting it color coordinated when I find all the proper red and blue pieces. Then I need to see what refinements I will introduce with the Maggi 2.

Below is a demo of the Maggi 1 hauling ass!

RIP: Dr. Murray Gell-Mann

Dr. Murray Gell-Mann may not be as famous as Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein or Marie Curie but he was instrumental in furthering our understanding of what the building-blocks of the universe, reality…everything. In 1964 he named these “things” quarks which he co-discovered coincidentally with George Zweig (it’s not uncommon for two or more brilliant people to invent/discover something around the same time). What quarks are? I’m not sure but I think they’re smaller than atoms and those hadron colliders are trying to find physical proof of them. Hopefully, someone with a stronger, legitimate Physics background can answer versus another friend just posting Wikipedia.

Brazilian ad featuring the D&D cartoon characters

According to my two Brazilian co-workers, the D&D cartoon show that aired on CBS Saturday mornings in 1983 (in America) never made it to the TV networks in their country. Maybe the person(s) behind it lived in the States at the time and/or got the repackaged DVD set. Either way, somebody had a fondness for it to plug a French-based SUV south of here. It doesn’t need any real translation. It’s a car commercial! There’s blather about how spacious the SUV is, how much power it has to get away from a dragon, buy this! buy this! buy this! I do have to applaud the ending which doesn’t take much effort to “understand.” Lastly, I think Brazilians probably see the ad before watching a movie too. TV commercials are just as “short” as they are in America. How many in a row they must suffer through could be different.

Princess Cutie & Friends return with two helpful lessons

They’re back! This time Princess Cutie and her puppet friends known as the Round Rockers are here to share a couple lessons with little people…and maybe to make the grownups laugh.

First up, why you shouldn’t hit people, especially friends, when you’re mad.

Next is all about the benefits of sharing…

Longest “official Watch” exercise streak tied!

A somewhat monumental day as I have broken a personal record twice this year. Back in March, what was established at 52 (beating the previous year’s 30) has been tied today but since I’m in good health, I will be pushing out to beat the unofficial record (as in, it wasn’t recorded by my Apple Watch) of 70.

Poor creature thanks to Austin drivers

Last night I was happily driving home because I got to meet Adam Savage of Mythbusters (more about this eventually) and while I was in the home stretch on Pflugerville’s main drag (aka FM 1825/Pecan Street), a possum was on the road. I desperately wanted to stop, test the limits of my badly-need-to-be-replaced tires and spare the poor animal.

It wasn’t meant to be thanks to a typical Austin Asshole driver riding my ass too closely so if I did the morally right thing, I would’ve been rear-ended with a 30% chance of the perpetrator being uninsured (thanks Texas GOP!)…while they were looking at their damned phone.

I continue to feel horrible. I know possums are mean, gross-smelling marsupials with Taylor Swift eyes. Regardless, the creature didn’t deserve such a painful, unfair demise. Humans built where they’ve lived for centuries and despite their bad PR, possums do serve a purpose in the bigger scheme of nature. I have no idea what it may be.

One big downside of this guilt is that I can’t easily go out and adopt another possum, give it a good life as penance like one could with a dog or cat. I’m open to suggestions if anyone has a solution.

Campaign #2 is kind of under way, Fuinseog’s Follies

Back in March I was excited about finally being a player in a D&D game, new people, etc. We even had what is traditionally called Session Zero; it’s when everybody makes up their new characters and we hammer out a coherent story. I got to make my monk with poor charisma. Contrary to popular misinformation, low charisma in D&D doesn’t mean one is ugly, it means the character has a crappy personality when it comes to persuading or interacting with others. I planned to play it up as social naivety given a martial artist monk in the Kung Fu tradition being raised in a monastery for most of his life, ergo, he’s social retarded.

Well within an hour of our first playing session, the DM crapped out. I was pissed alongside several others. There were two alternatives, disband and hope for another Pathfider subgroup to happen amongst the 5E groups (none of which has gotten together neither I’ve discovered)…or, I would have to step up, DM a second campaign. Yeah, I’m an idiot as expected because my desire to play in any capacity trumped my desire for naps on Sunday afternoons.

There was an upside, combining the recent puppet movies I’ve helped with, D&D and some creativity inspired by the 18-year-old Dungeon CD extra adventure “Gorgoldand’s Gauntlet.” See above, duh! My friend Kathy provided the voice, puppeteering and punched up the script I wrote.  I did the camera work along with the crude artwork behind my dragon puppet Fuinseog; pronounced FWEN-shoy-uh, it’s Irish Gaelic for ash which is about right for fire-breathing dragons). We did this in six takes and Kathy punched it up with Final Cut Pro in 10 minutes.

Me as James Lipton & Pikachu

When we went to see Rock and Rule (more on it later), the Alamo showing it also had the new, awful-looking, live-action Pokémon movie with Will Smith’s untalented kid. In the lobby they had those chairs and a large Pikachu so I cajoled Somara to take my photo as I did my best James Lipton (of Inside the Actor’s Studio made famous by Wil Farrel’s impression).

Me: Pikachu…in Pokémon the Movie, you were facing Squirtle in a battle. Things looked dire. But you faced the challenge and said words we all remembered, “Pika, pikachu, pikachu!” Brilliant!

Due to my vanity and no special effects budget, I didn’t have the means or will to be bald.

Check out what I got in the mail from Amsterdam!

My friends who live in Amsterdam sent me the English links from the Rijks Museum to score these special Playmobil sets based upon famous paintings! Above is The Nightwatch by none other than Rembrandt. Stealth was not the plan as you can see from the dude in yellow.

Next up are a married couple featured in two separate portraits back when Rembrandt did more of these as his livelihood, Marten and Oopjen. I thought these two were in the same painting but nope, they’re separate and according to the museum, each is about two meters (over six feet) in height. The Dutch managed secure these briefly from France for an exhibition. If you’ve seen them, I’d say the Playmobil figure is flattering compared to what Oopjen looked like.

Lastly is a very recognized painting known as The Milk Maid by Vermeer, not Rembrandt as I thought, thank you Cousin Dana! She comes with all the cool accoutrements you see: bread, table and pitcher. Milk you’ll have to imagine.

How much were these? The museum’s prices were in Euros but they accepted my credit card and ship anywhere. I think after the exchange rate (the Euro is worth more than the American Dollar) and them going via the Dutch postal service, $41 with arrival in a week!

Will I take them out of the boxes? Hell yes. They’ll be joining my small army of Playmobil people through a diorama I have yet to imagine.

Funny packaging (May 2019)

Somebody at work has this fake box on display. I know where to get more but I’m not telling (and it’s not The Onion) because I have ideas to package good gifts in them.

RIP: Tarda, aka Grumpy Cat

The cat who launched a thousands jokes, scores of merchandise, a comic book with Garfield, a movie on Lifetime, raised money to help less-fortunate animals and yet still was a little girl’s beloved pet, will be remembered. Tarda passed away earlier this week from health issues probably caused by her dwarfism and given her unusual condition, she managed to live to be seven; according to my vet’s chart, about 44 for a human.

Tarda’s notoriously grumpy face was a side effect from a smaller lower jaw which is common in dwarf cats. Plus felines have fewer facial muscles so they aren’t as expressive as dogs, an animal humanity has conditioned further to be like us. Her name was also a little kid’s take on tartar sauce and contrary to the grumpy face, Tarda was reported to be a sweet, loving cat, fond of her human family.

I missed my chance to meet the famous cat when Tarda was a guest at SXSW. Normally I avoid the debacle and the operators aren’t very good at communicating who the special guests are to us peasants. My boss got his picture with her. Lucky dude.

Mark Evanier, a writer I follow, said he had worked on various incarnations of Garfield as an animated show and comic book for years. He never received such an outpouring of happiness from children until they learned he did the adaptation incorporating Grumpy Cat meeting the fat, lasagna-eating misanthrope.

Aubrey Plaza had a very heartfelt goodbye to Tarda. They sort of worked together as Aubrey provided Tarda’s “voice” for a Lifetime Channel movie, I still want to see it.

Due to the nature of cats, when one goes away, another will fill the vacuum be it Lil’ Bub, Curious Zelda or the lovable Nala. Maybe it will be a cat the Internet has yet to discover.

Bye Tarda, may you find happiness and admiration from my Molly and Miette when you cross the rainbow bridge. Say hello to the numerous Morris tabbies, Salem’s doubles and the two who played Spot on Star Trek: Next Generation.

Exceeded 2018’s biking mileage!

Quite a week for personal exercise! First 500 days with the Watch completed, then a million steps for 2019 and now I have beaten 2018’s total of 1180.49 miles. It seems pretty impressive, given last year was when I really put more effort into the exercise-bikes at the gym. I had to switch to a different form of cardio because my fat ass (260-plus pounds, I know, sad) was killing my knees. Until my weight is much, much lower, I had to do this.

Anyway, 1180.49 isn’t that great. If you divide it by 365, it only comes out to 3.2 miles/day which is what I used to be able to run during my peak years, mid Aughts. Maybe to some it’s a big effort but let me throw in some other factors to show how easy it is. If you set the resistance to 1 and go with a steady, relatively easy pace of a lap on a standard sports track (high school/university) which is .25 miles/minute; you would be done in less than 12 minutes. Doctors recommend about 30 minutes/day. People go faster on a leisurely stroll with a regular bike going about their lives. My friends in Amsterdam would be laughing, thinking, “Huh, really? We do twice as much just to get groceries with a kid riding in a cart we tow.”

Now that I have achieved nearly 1200 miles by mid May. I’m planning to pull off at least 3000 miles before 2019 is done. This will make 2020 a nightmare if I want to beat 2019.

One million steps!

As per the Pedometer app on my iPhone I have achieved my first million steps of just walking and moving around this year. Anything to close the rings on my Watch.

Good thing I have 200 pairs of shoes so I never really wear anything out.

RIP: Tim Conway

Another great cast member of The Carol Burnett Show has passed away but when I was a kid he was also a staple of the Disney movies I saw, Gus, The Shaggy DA and the Apple Dumpling Gang with Don Knotts. I had to double check his imdb.com page about the Disney stuff and wow, he managed to have a guest spot on numerous post Seventies sitcoms. I’m glad the younger generations got to know him in his last, most famous incarnation, the voice of Mermaid Man’s sidekick…Barnacle Boy! I was thrilled to see Tim playing himself on The Simpsons when they did parodies of spin-off shows, namely the last gasp variety types from the Seventies: Sonny & Cher, Donny & Marie and Tony Orlando & Dawn.

Tim was a master of comedy on numerous levels. He made slapstick funny at a time when it was passé with the rise of SNL yet he was a master in the deadpan delivery of jokes whether it was reading a gag telegram during his Emmy acceptance speech or being the second banana in Gus.

He was one of the few people everybody in my family could agree on being funny. Well, at least my Grandma and me. My parents may have just rolled their eyes due to their generation being the “inventors” of SNL, The Firesign Theater and National Lampoon.

Thanks for everything Tim. May millions discover your comic brilliance through the CBS streaming service which claims they will be showing all 11 seasons of Carol.
