Roy Wood Jr.

Last comedy show of the year and it’s with another great wit from The Daily Show. You probably know Roy as the current Senior Black Correspondent who’s had funny positions about the NFL and HBO’s possible Confederacy show. The club must’ve recognized my name from the streak I had been showing up for (Rita Rudner, Michele Wolf and the Sklar Brothers) since I had a table against the stage.

Roy didn’t disappoint, I about pissed myself with his funny stories: arguments about how compromise between the sexes causes the creation of new gadgets, faith healers and mediums summoning dead relatives. I knew he loves to cover sports and I wasn’t let down, he called me out for my Green Bay jersey saying I just put it away so it will be clean next year. I laughed but he followed up with how hard it is to be a Dolphins fan, to paraphrase, they’re terrible and if you show up early wearing a jersey, they make you start.

If you get the chance, watch Roy’s stand-up material.

A sign of solidarity with Aaron Rodgers through our broken collar bones.

The Powerpuff Girls grown up

Someone at WizWorld had this T-shirt. I liked it even if it’s a bit disturbing. My favorite superhero sisters look more back-up dancers but I have a feeling if they did become adults, the ladies would find a way to use their looks to defeat enemies via distractions: the Gangrene Gang, Mojo Jojo and Fuzzy Lumpkins namely.

New exercise streak achieved!

Today I set a new record via my Apple Watch, as it says above, I have achieved my Exercise and Move goals for 13 days in a row for the first time. The last goal accomplished was 12 days via running on the treadmill around April of this year. Sure, it’s easier on a stationary bike but fear not, I will be pushing this out to a higher number with running when I get my weight down to a safer level for my knees.

Michael Rooker

Michael has been a frequent guest of Austin’s WizWorld but I decided to finally meet him because I seriously enjoyed his portrayal of Earle from The Walking Dead. At the beginning, he was a cartoon character, the redneck racist sowing discord amongst the survivors. By the end, Earle was more complicated and in his own, brutal manner, he died trying to do the right thing by Rick’s band.

He also provided the voice of an allegedly crooked sheriff from Gilette’s past on Archer, yet another plot twist you’ll have to watch.

Then there was his Yondu character from Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course I stumbled upon a few other things I need to look up or re-watch, namely, he was in Tombstone. Probably on the “bad guys” side led by Powers Boothe.

Ninjago: Worth Seeing, more than a crass commercial

This was Somara’s pick at the discount theater. I was reluctant because I’ve watched some of the TV version on Cartoon Network and it’s boring. It’s an extended toy commercial worse than the Eighties crap which didn’t even try to disguise itself. As for the movie, it’s too bad it flopped. Ninjago is funny, clever and almost as entertaining as the previous two Lego outings.

For those not familiar with the show/toy’s premise, Ninjago is a metropolis on an island protected by a band of colored ninjas who pilot element-based robots (or mechs), similar to the Power Rangers. Every day or so, Ninjago is attacked by the villain Garmadon who wants to rule the place. There’s never a strong explanation for why Garmadon wants to be the boss beyond being the villain.

During one particular attack, the ninjas’ mechs and their strategy fail allowing Garmadon to finally succeed. Led by their sensei Master Wu (voiced by Jackie Chan), the ninjas must go back to basics on becoming true ninjas by taking an arduous journey through the island’s treacherous jungle. Hilarity ensues through verbal jokes, Lego gags and circumstances.

When Ninjago comes to DVD, cable and streaming services, give it a try. It’s not quite as great as The Lego Movie but it shares some the predecessor’s DNA through some A-list people providing voices: Fred Armisen, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Abbi Jacobson, Chris Hardwick, Michael Strahan and Ali Wong. There’s jokes aplenty for adults and children.

Finally! I got the gold sevens on my Activity app

The reason why this award on my iPhone/Apple Watch eluded me is that a “week” by the devices’ definition is Monday through Sunday.

Either way, harnessing the Workout app while on the bike, I will be on my way to earning many, many more in 2018.

WKRP Reunion!

It’s time to start showing off all my WizWorld encounters for 2017! Kicking matters off are two stars from the well-loved, nostalgic SitCom WKRP Cincinnati with Lonnie Anderson on my right (this was her break-out role) and Howard Hesseman on my left. Lonnie is actually taller in real life than I thought. Even if you subtracted her heels, she’s still taller than most actresses I’ve met.

Great to meet them very briefly. WKRP is the show which led to my initial poor career choice in college too. As high school was coming to a close, I was rather worried, rudderless and panicking about what I would be doing for a living since university would be a short four years. I didn’t want to have a boring desk job, typing code into a mainframe like my father plus his career caused us to move every year lately. Then I started catching reruns of WKRP and thought, hey, radio is a great idea. I wouldn’t be a DJ like Dr. Johnny Fever or Venus but I could have a behind-the-scenes job like Bailey while enjoying the music the station played!

Fortunately, I realized what a backwards-minded industry FM radio was in the rock space and began learning other stuff which has oddly led me to the gigs I’ve had since I joined kinko’s in 1991. Wise decision too. Thanks to the Telecom Act of 1996, over 10,000 jobs were destroyed through consolidation and it’s only gotten worse in the Aughts as people listen to their phones and streaming services. Still, the show with its great cast continues to entertain and make us laugh.

Let’s hope this is it for the 21st Century…

…or to paraphrase Homer Simpson, “The worst two mornings of the 21st Century so far.” Given the idiocy and naked corruption we’ve seen so far, I think there will be a third date for when North Korea plants a nuclear hit on either our friends or the West Coast.

Justice League:…just boring and unnecessary

When it comes to the big two superhero comic book companies, I have leaned toward DC since college. Hard to believe there was a time when DC’s movies were better too (Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman remains one of the best). Now that Marvel has been kicking DC’s ass at the box office, DC has continued to rely on Zak Snyder’s vision to make their universe interesting and more importantly, financially lucrative. Well, they struck out again after having a brief victory with Wonder Woman. It’s hard not to compare League with Avengers and say the former comes up short.

Picking back up sometime after Superman’s death in Batman v. Superman, Batman begins to investigate an odd pattern involving a weird creature during his patrols of Gotham City. This prompts him and Wonder Woman to recruit the other heroes in Batman’s special files: Aquaman (he’s much tougher and more hairy than the traditional cartoon version), Cyborg and the Flash. Why? A pattern of weird symbols indicate the world is going to be subject to an invasion by other-worldly creatures. What’s holding it back are three mystical objects guarded by two active cultures while the third was lost to the ages…until now.

Spoiler Alert

Batman knows the five of them can’t defeat what’s coming so he concocts a plan to resurrect Superman via the mystical items. Allegedly, these “mother boxes” have incredible amounts of power/energy, enough to jump start Superman’s body. Little did Batman know, Superman would be disoriented and he starts to lash out at the other heroes. The only good scene in this involves the Flash discovering he isn’t the only one with superspeed as he sees Superman’s eyes shifting while Flash is moving at light speed.

Spoiler Alert Over

Overall, League is a boring slog of Batman putting together a team to save the world. Seen it. Someone else did it better.

DC should just focus on being more successful on TV. Green Arrow and the Flash teaming up once a year is more exciting than this. The ongoing Legends of Tomorrow has my attention too. A giant blockbuster slapping together DC’s four biggest characters with two minor ones fighting through numerous Instagram filters is lame. Will there be a time to have an actual movie? I honestly don’t know. Superheroes are tricky given their long, complicated backstories making them better executed through a weekly show. Again, I don’t know what it would take to make the revered Justice League a great movie, I only know this isn’t it.

Alamo Extras: Max Fleischer Superman cartoon (seen it at least twice before); trailer for awful Filipino Adam West-like movie (seen it before too); Mego ad for Wonder Woman doll; the first Aquaman movie made in the Eighties with DC’s OK; Sixties Hanna Barbera cartoons of Flash, Superman and Teen Titans; The State doing a bit mocking the JLA; video game avatars of Avengers v. JLA in a dance competition (really awful); Superpup pilot from 1957; scenes from the 1974 Wonder Woman with Kathie Lee Crosby; Superman musical from 1975; scenes from Legends of the Superheroes around 1979, the first episode was a scavenger hunt and the second was a celebrity roast; scenes from the 1990 version of The Flash showing Mark Hamil as the Trickster and Bryan Cranston as a villain; scenes from the failed 1997 Justice League pilot with David Ogden Stiers as Martian Manhunter (it’s Roger Corman bad); some of the 2006 Aquaman pilot and the opening from the 1973 Superfriends cartoon.

The new “alarm clock”

I recently won an iMac at work. Not a bad model at all. It would be nice to utilize the computer in some fashion beyond being an alarm clock but we just lack the space and time. So I cleared it out, updated the macOS and then set it up to boot up every weekday at 6 AM, open up the calendar so we know what’s on the agenda beyond work and tap right into my stream. Still having trouble keeping the boot chime de-activated, the whining it shows on a dialog box about the keyboard being “missing” and how to show the weather. I’ll get there, it’s mostly a manner of digging through forums.

Welcome December

I was a tad absent-minded on implementing the obvious changes on my site Friday. Again, it slipped my mind which was annoying, I had the snowy header ready to go. A little nod to the horrible weather I left behind 23 years ago and have never looked back. When you mention how awesome it is to have just extended Falls during the Winter months, you often hear the rationale from your northern friends saying, “I’d miss the change of seasons.” Yeah, keep telling yourself that lie. If you can’t tell when it is when you look out the window, check a calendar.

Above is my new Playmobil-NHL advent calendar to help me and my work neighbors on how close we are to Christmas. The dates appear to be all over the place. As of now, all I have on the rink (technically, a sheet) are the blue player (1), his helmet (2) and pucks (3). I’m guessing the Stanley Cup is for 25.

Planet of the Apes shirt!

One horrible habit I have at WizWorld is acquiring cool shirts of franchises I will never see at Hot Topic or find easily online. An upside is retiring other, older, existing shirts which no longer amuse me.

This gem is a tribute of my love of this venerable franchise which was rescued by the recent trilogy. Rise, Dawn and War rewrote how human civilization collapsed to make room for the Ape Civilization you see in this movie. As much as I enjoyed Escape, Conquest and Battle, they were done on the cheap with Escape having several humongous MacGuffins to make the story possible, namely…how did Cornelius, Zira and Milo get Taylor’s spacecraft out of the water, make it operational and then go back in time?

I now just realized that I must’ve bought the shirt unconsciously too. Next year, aka 2018, will be Planet‘s 50th anniversary! Good thing I have something to wear.

MST3K renewed for another season!

I know it’s old news. Joel and the gang announced it on Thanksgiving during the traditional marathon via a Shout stream, I think. Let’s hear it for Netflix and its mystery algorithm that can determine whether or not to continue making an original show. My Blu-Rays recently arrived too.

Again, I’m grateful Joel regained control of the show and found a new outlet. Comedy Central pissed it away (or more likely they just wanted to change for the sake of it) while SyFy didn’t have a clue nor a decent budget. Netflix provides great stuff without commercials.

I have watched all of them except for the Christmas episode and I think there’s one more left in the initial batch of 14. They haven’t missed a beat but my favorite parts are always the interstitials when Jonah and the robots do a song or bit.

Fingers crossed for mid to late 2018.

Picayune has a surprised related to MST3K coming soon.

Krysten Ritter

Currently Krysten is best known as Jessica Jones on Netflix (a show I need to restart) but for me she was Jesse’s ill-fated girlfriend Jane on Breaking Bad plus I remember her in Big Eyes.

Krysten was stopping through Austin to promote her new novel Bonfire which adds another accomplishment to a pretty impressive resume listing musician and owner of a production company. The book is on my long, long list of novels/non-fiction things I need to read before I’m 100.

She was a very nice and more than happy to meet us all. There was no reading but everyone who wanted a little face time with Krysten did. I thanked her for coming and said I really loved her work/character in Breaking Bad. If you haven’t seen the show, Krysten’s Jane is pivotal in keeping Jesse level to a point while unknowingly driving a wedge between Jesse and Walter’s partnership in crime.

The book is intriguing too. I have a feeling Krysten drew upon her past of growing up in a small town to create the scenario of Bonfire. Meanwhile, Jessica Jones is getting back on my high priority watchlist. I don’t have to re-watch Daredevil unless there’s something important there for The Defenders.

The little Bowie fan

The little kids dad humored me with a photo of his little David Bowie fan! It was so cute that a shirt their size existed and then getting a pair of matching Wellies to boot!

Only in Austin is this possible. Maybe San Francisco and certain neighborhoods in NYC.
