Cat stalls to combat obesity

These cat owners found a way to combat two of their felines being pigs with the food. It appears to be working. I’m just wondering how do the cats always know which stall to eat at because the dispensers aren’t triggered to identify them via a collar. It’s still funny and we could use something like this for our resident porker, Kuroneko.

Spider-Man Homecoming: Worth Seeing

Third time is a charm! Well, I did like the Sam Raimi trilogy, even when Peter Parker went all Emo, allegedly. I thought the shift in his behavior thanks to the symbiote was effective.

Anyway, right off his brief appearance in Captain America: Civil War, the new, integrated with the larger MCU Spider-Man sets off to carve out his niche in New York City. To save time, all the origin elements were skipped because (rightfully) the audience knows the whole spiel (the spider that bit Peter, Uncle Ben, discovering his powers, etc).

We pick up a few months after Civil yet the story really begins eight years earlier with the cleanup work after the invasion in The Avengers. (Hmm, I thought it would be five due to the first team-up flick being out in 2012.) Adrian Toomes’ company has been handling the rubble removal in the battle’s aftermath until a government agency (not SHIELD) takes over for security reasons; there’s alien tech amongst the junk. Toomes isn’t compensated by the government so he converts his construction business into a black-market weapons manufacturing operation; his employees managed to steal some of the alien power sources. If you also recognize the name, Toomes has his crew build him a cool set of mechanical wings/weapons, thus we have our new villain, the Vulture. Way better than Amazing‘s lame-ass Electro and the Lizard.

Back in the present, Peter does his patrols, fights crime around his neighborhood and pester’s Stark’s helper Happy Hogan about being ready for another mission. Things get more interesting when Spider-Man tries to thwart an ATM robbery by four criminals armed with alien firepower supplied by the Vulture, setting the larger story in motion of Spider-Man versus the Vulture.

Other subplots: interactions with Aunt May (girl advice, keeping the secret), containing his friend Ned’s enthusiasm, having a crush on an upperclassman named Liz and all the high school stuff.

It’s safe to say, cinematic Spider-Man is back on track even though he probably won’t interact with the four, grittier Defenders on Netflix. The acting is solid. The jokes work. As expected, you will be rewarded with the end credits. Does it give a hint on what to expect in Thor: Ragnarok? You’ll have to go see.

Alamo Extras: We arrived too late for it to matter, this was my fault. What I did see wasn’t too different from what they showed at Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Happy Seventh Birthday Isis!

My third kitty and currently the youngest of our household trio celebrates what we guess is her seventh birthday. Whatever it may actually be, the day we were allowed to officially adopt her from a rough life outdoors was declared her new birthday.

Isis is still skittish during fireworks and thunderstorms but we’ve had progress with her sleeping on the bed while we’re relaxing or sleeping. The tower in the living room remains Isis’ favorite hang out. My favorite bit with her is letting her roll around at the top, waiting to pet her because if you don’t do it right away, she’ll pause and make a cute “mew!” noise meaning, “c’mon already!”

She’s in good health and I’m confident Isis will be with us for at least another decade.

A great time had be gEeKs and me, the fat one

The Lowrys of California took some time from their busy agenda visiting Austin to hang out with me and play games at Pinballz Lake Creek. The little ladies really enjoyed the mini-bowling. Sadly, they’re not all tall enough to go on the new 7-D ride, maybe next year. You can see above, we’re enjoying the spoils from the tickets we won.

I hope we can make this is little tradition because Pinballz is kid friendly.

KMAG played its two millionth song

I thought it was due around this month but it happened while I was sleeping…June 23, 2017, KMAG passed the two million milestone, just couple months shy of its 15th anniversary.

Again, it was something in my stream’s Top 35 rotation:

“Best Kept Secret” by Neko Case, K D Lang & Laura Veirs

Let’s hope the MacMini lasts long enough to get me to three million!

Samurai Jack returns and concludes

As the title above states in brief, there’s good news and bad news. I want to elaborate on the good and bad though.

The good parts involving Jack‘s return:

  • Genndy Tartakovsky is back to helm the 10 episode run.
  • Phil Lamar continues to do the voice of Jack.
  • Many of Jack’s old allies (the Scotsman) and enemies (Scaramouche) make appearances.
  • The show is a part of [adult swim]/Toonami because the violence, tone and language got ratcheted up.
  • There is closure unlike Jack‘s previous finale in 2004 which felt more like a cancellation.

The bad…

  • The episodes still end with those confusing Roman numerals that aren’t necessarily sequential.
  • Just when things were back in full swing, it’s over.

So there isn’t really much “bad” with the new season. I think having about a decade off gave Genndy time to recharge and think of new locales and creatures to bring to life in the show’s no-outline style. Jack was always a journey into new genres or interpretations of famous myths (e.g. the 300 Spartans).

The story just picks up where we left Jack 50 years later. Somehow, the portal has prevented him from aging. His primary mission to defeat Aku has been shelved due to the magic sword being lost. This doesn’t prevent Jack from continuing to defend/rescue those oppressed by Aku for he is quite proficient with guns, other melee weapons and his fists. Little does he know that seven women branded the Daughters of Aku are hot on his tail; you see some exposition on their origin too, they are badass.

Jack‘s premiere run has ended now. I managed to catch it through on-demand while house  sitting. It’s also shown in reruns alongside other [adult swim] programming. I highly recommend catching it. If you’ve never seen the original four-year run from over a decade ago, it helps to see much of it. Personally, I think I will try to corral those on DVD to re-enjoy Jack‘s humor and fantastic settings.

Overcrowded bird nest in a weird spot!

Above is a bird nest some weird breed constructed right on the security camera of my friends. You can’t see every baby bird but there are four crammed in there. Mama bird hasn’t been seen lately. When I first noticed the domicile, mama bird would always fly away and not return unless you were in the house or off the porch. It’s impressive what wild animals do to manage their lives around us.

Boring, responsible victory for the Maggi Republic!

In a rare demonstration of me being an adult I successfully signed up to save us $120/year on our trash bill.

While I was home to pick up a change of clothes for my house/catsitting weekend, there was a knock at the door. I thought it was our neighbor/trainer Niko who recently returned from his vacation. Nope, it was a dude representing a trash-collection company. I told him, we’re set, we have Round Rock Refuse. He asked how much? I said it recently jumped to $109/quarter. He then followed up with, do you know why? I replied, they told me the landfill raised or I figured they have to travel farther for another one. Turns out, he represented the company which owned said landfill. He was the neighborhood offering a new, new low rate but they also do recycling so I pounced on it. I loved RRR because they were more reasonable than the BFI empire yet they never did recycling in our neighborhood. These guys own a recycling center and even better, they can process all plastics, not just type 1 and 2, inject mold junk! I know my recyclables from years of volunteering for Ecology Action. Woo hoo! A little extra money and an exciting story to post on my Web site!

Well, I had to write something to show I don’t spend all my leisure time acting like a giant kid having a fun time.

RIP Stephen Furst (belated)

To most people Stephen lives on as Flounder from Animal House but to the Nerd crowd it’s Vir Cotto in Babylon 5. I was more annoyed by the Internet not having many photos of him in the one treasure I later remembered him starring in the early-to-mid-Eighties cable standard Midnight Madness which was also Disney’s second PG-rated movie. Madness was a ensemble flick to promote David Naughton before American Werewolf in London appeared. The story was about a scavenger hunt across LA with Naughton, Furst, Eddie Deezen, Maggie Roswell (before she became the voice of Maude Flanders) and a generic jock type as the team captains. It was Michael J Fox’s first big role as Laughton’s troubled, younger brother. Lastly, there’s a cameo of Pee Wee Herman as an arcade owner. Madness did poorly at the box office yet I remembered it being reviewed in my hometown paper in Springfield, IL. I watched a couple times in high school via Showtime. I genuinely liked it and maybe I’ll get the DVD in honor of Stephen.

Of course, I will address his obvious career highlights, Animal House, St. Elsewhere and Babylon 5. He was relatively funny in the film which launch dozens of teen-sex romps throughout the Eighties; I didn’t watch Elsewhere much because it was on Thursday nights during high school. Now Babylon 5, he really came into his own, especially in his interactions with Peter Juraski and Billy Mumy. Stephen did a fantastic job as the put-upon ambassadorial aide who broke the Centauri stereotype…he had a conscience unlike Londo and Lord Refa. However, I fear that Babylon 5 is a cursed show unlike the various Star Trek franchises due the deaths of principal cast members, thus, no reunions or continuing the story a little further. Vir was destined to be the Centauri emperor who’d reform the polity and have it join the Galactic Alliance.

Sorry my tribute and farewell is overdue Stephen. Thank you for all the laughs you brought through Delta House and joy via your Sci-Fi contribution.

Miike Snow

Last June, Somara and I with Mark M went to see Miike Snow live since we all dig their funky, electronic sound, especially their hit “Genghis Khan.” We didn’t get any good pictures so I have the Getty Image there and photographer is credited.

The band is pretty impressive because all three of them can play different instruments as needed, except for the drums, this they left to a dedicated drummer who tours with them.

Above you can see the set list. A good mix of material from all three of their albums. My only disappointment was them not performing “The Wave,” which has some personal meaning to me. Still, this 80-minute show at Stubb’s beats a tiny appearance at a festival.

Opening for them was a pretty cool Dutch band whose name escapes me, I’ll leave that for Mark to resolve.

Unless you’re a brave concert goer like me, I would just recommend being their albums or the songs listed in the picture plus “The Wave.” Miike Snow attracts a younger crowd, one with its frickin’ phones going all the time, recording the concert instead of being in the moment.

Battlestar Galactica reunion at the Paramount

For those who saw the entertainment news several weeks ago, Battlestar Galactica show runner/revamper Ron Moore finally admitted that he and the other writers never put together a plan for the Cylons. It was revealed during the closing panel at Austin’s Television festival which I attended…just the BSG part.

As much as I loved both versions of the show, I’ve always been apprehensive with Ron Moore’s direction. Sure it’s better than Glen Larson’s cheesy original soaked in Mormon mythology like the Twitard vampire franchise yet the show was padded with the similar tactics used on Star Trek. Plus having Cylons who resembled 12 people felt like a lazy, low-budget cheat. Still, I ponied up the money for a ticket to go.

One special treat was the flubbed attempt to have Jamie Bamber drop from his vacation in France via Skype.

The MC did a good job keeping things moving, letting Moore and the cast get out their anecdotes on how they landed the roles, what they did during the series, how they couldn’t keep Starbuck’s disappearance a secret, etc. The funnier ones were when some rented the old show to see who the characters were before the gender swaps got implemented.

My favorite was Jame Edward Olmos, the show’s best and strongest actor, explained his skepticism and would only do BSG if it was taken seriously. It paid off, his scene in the pilot with the immediate funeral after the massacre by the Cylons was a demonstration of his powerful acting. He even got the audience to band together and say the Colonial version of “amen,” “So say we all.”

There was a dreadful part sadly. They opened the floor to questions. UGH. All festivals, book signings, whatever need to implement what I call the Elvis Costello Rule. Questions need to be submitted earlier and the staff can weed out the crap ones and the part I hate the most…the assholes who blather on about themselves and maybe there’s a question at the end. You know the types, “Me! Me! Me! Oh, and can I have a selfie with you? The hell with the other few hundred people.”

I’ll end on a positive note. I am glad I went despite standing in the late-day heat outside the venue. Battlestar Galactica (2003) was a vast improvement on numerous levels. The 1978 run looks very dated along with its horrendous Astronomy, Moore’s did its homework on Science often. Then comes the SciFi network. This show was one of the few things justifying its existence amongst the abundant turd sandwiches they’ve aired such as wrestling, a hack psychic and chasing ghosts.

Now I’m hoping to go to a convention where I can have my picture taken with Katee Sackhoff. I doubt James Edward Olmos bothers, the man has a credible SciFi resume though: Blade Runner, Agents of SHIELD and Eureka.

OK, I’m working my way back in

And not too late since I think I just missed the 12th anniversary of my site. I had to get through some fatigue, ennui, annoyance and pre-occupation with the world around me. Besides, I’m researching stuff to get my life out of the rut. One thing I will plow through is prepping some D&D encounters/story because two of the players are going on vacation for about a month. Meanwhile, I think we’ll be juggling almost three households in July. The upside, they all involve cats!

I’m a bit more ambitious for someone said they were interested in reading my writing while another person has (probably) been disappointed over my lack of updates. Fear no more, as I get to final candidates for the best of 1996 in my music collection, I have a few stories stockpiled.

Still taking time off

Just haven’t been feelin’ in much in many branches but I hope to turn the corner with July, a month with some decent plans and anniversaries.

RIP Adam West

Pretty sad news over this weekend regarding the man who was the first Batman I knew as a little kid. By then Batman was being shown through syndication for afternoon TV. It was so inspirational that my brother and friends often ran around the house waring bath towels as capes. If you could snag dish-washing gloves for gauntlets, it was even more convincing!

I never got to meet Mr. West up close. I miss the opportunity some years ago when he came to Wiz World with Burt Ward.

I did see him at a special screening of Batman: The Movie at the Paramount during Austin’s BatFest. The city made him the honorary mayor for the weekend, hoping he could be spared from his current duties in Quahog, RI. West was humorous and mentally agile, especially when a man asked a question on behalf of his shy son; the boy wanted to know if the shark was OK. He chuckled and said the shark was fine, it was only pretend.

Many people always thought West was a lousy actor due to the show typecasting him for much of his career. Not really. He was a very good performer, often appearing in guest spots on the Sitcoms and Dramas of the early Sixties which would be Westerns, cop shows and medical junk. I think he landed Batman after how well he did co-starring with the Three Stooges in The Outlaw is Coming.

Anyway, years before he landed his trademark role, the producers of Batman used to hang out at the Playboy mansion. For laughs, Hugh Hefner would show the old serials of Batman from the Forties like a Sixties version of MST3K. The audience laughed because they were terrible or the ironic, it’s-so-bad-it’s-good vibe. Thus William Dozier and company decided that if the landed the opportunity to do a Batman TV show, it would be campy. Good move too, the approach worked with the Baby Boomers who were in high school and university. Meanwhile, West’s instructions were to play Bruce Wayne/Batman as if Hugh Hefner were a masked vigilante. You can’t tell today since Hefner hasn’t been in the public eye for years. What little I know, I’d say it’s a tad exaggerated yet I love, especially when Batman had a duel with the villain Shame and all the hilarious lines from the 1966 movie.

I’m glad he had a renaissance starting the Nineties as a voice actor. West had appearances on The Simpsons, Futurama, Johnny Bravo and the various Batman cartoons (The Grey Ghost, Dr. Thomas Wayne). Family Guy is where he got to be “himself” and what most probably recognize him in now.

Thank you Mr. West for all the joy, laughs and excitement you brought. To this day, I’m confident you continue to inspire little kids to run around their houses in towel-capes.
