Hey Mr. J, I’m on some new shoes!

The way Harley Quinn should be portrayed!

I always prefer the original character design by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. The sexualized one DC shifted to in 2011, video games and the horrendous Suicide Squad movie is just lame. I’m no prude, I just think it was a lazy, lowest-common denominator decision to have everyone’s favorite Joker sidekick dress like she shops at Hot Topic and Victoria’s Secret. Meanwhile, I scored the Lego mining for the upcoming movie so I figured she can show off how thrilled the character would be.

Her eyes hide the craziness deep inside.

Nikki Glaser

Another great evening of live comedy in Austin with up and coming stand-up comedian, Nikki Glaser. You may recognize her through Inside Amy Schumer and her podcast Not Safe with Nikki Glaser. After listening to Nikki’s set, I’m going to give the latter a try because I don’t have cable. She was very funny, a tad dirty for general audiences but hey, I’m fine with letting comedians do their thing. Plus, in light of our current political dilemma, I wanted to show my support for other voices. The late Christopher Hitchens claimed that women aren’t/can’t be funny. I strongly disagree. Nikki was on a roll covering subjects such as relationships ending, her dog and commercials promoting anti-depressants. The audience enjoyed her in kind. Thus, we can all virtually dance on Hitchens’ grave.

Opening for Nikki was another promising comedian named Tom Thakkar. He originally hails from Bloomington, IN so we talked about Carmel (wealthy suburb of Indianapolis) jokes. Since he is half-Indian, he really put that unwarranted question in its place. You know the one, “Which kind of Indian? Dot or feather?” He said, when I encounter a White person I ask, “Which kind of White are you? Potato or Nazi?”

Next up, Greg Fitzsimmons. I have one of his CDs.

RIP: John Hurt

A really cool actor with a solid Sci-Fi resume has passed. Now if I can still still tell the difference between John and the American actor William Hurt.

John first came to my attention as the Nostrumo’s navigator Kane who was indirectly killed by the Xenomorph’s face-hugger stage. Rumor has it, director Ridley Scott only told John what was going to happen during the crew’s fateful “last supper.” He was a good sport in reprising this role as a joke in Spaceballs.

Other roles he took in the genre were The Black Cauldron, 1984, Jim Henson’s The Storyteller, Watership Down, Snowpiercer, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Outside of these, he’ll always be remembered as the War Doctor and Hellboy’s handler. I want to draw attention to his performance in 1984 as Winston Smith. John did a great job being so numb to the regime until Julia pulls him into an affair which leads to their horrible fates.

He also did comedy. There’s just two coming to mind. The closeted gay cop in Ryan O’Neal’s Partners and a cameo as Jesus during the Last Supper.

Miguel the stray cat update

Today Miguel had his surgery before I turn him back loose into the “wild” known as unincorporated Pflugerville. Since he’s a stray and not big on human contact, the vet had to do his blood tests while unconscious. The bad news turned up through this. Poor Miguel has the cat version of AIDS and leukemia. I asked if he should be put to sleep, the verdict was no, he may go on to have a full life…for an outdoor-only cat.

Currently he’s recovering in a big cage on our porch until the pain relievers run out in a few days. I’m providing Miguel plenty of water, dry food and a litter box to give him some dignity. The long-term goal I’m hoping for is that I can conditioning him into trusting me and he’ll keep hanging around bc I’ll always feed him until he passes away.

Moon Chucks

I really wanted the unicorn design from Journeys but they didn’t carry them in my size, what a shock. This cool alternative with the moon and clouds which is pretty bitchin’.

Meet Miguel

Friday night I was driving down DeMaret like I often do on my way home with the brights on, watching for the numerous animals these neighbors let roam around. As expected, a couple cats were hanging out by the road so I pulled over and went to see if any were friendly. To this little guy’s good fortune, he was and it resulted in me taking him home to give him some food. Poor dude, he was starving. He was just inhaling what I put in front of him. Afterwards, I lured him into our outdoor cage for the night. Yes, it sounds mean but I also provided more food, some water and a blanket (it wasn’t too cold though). The following morning I took him to my veterinarian for an examination, vaccination and neutering. Either he wasn’t thrilled about being in the carrier and/or he was holding it in because he took a whiz.

I forgive him, he’s just a cat.

For the interim, I have dubbed him Miguel in honor of the late Miguel Ferrer. From the picture, you can see he’s tough like the actor’s characters. He has been on his own for five to six years based upon his teeth and jowls. Miguel’s ears are cut/scarred which probably means he’s low on the pecking order amongst the local strays.

However, Miguel is a sweet cat. He loves it when people pet him, especially around the face and head. The vet tech got him to purr.

The plan is to turn him lose after his operation. Miguel should be in decent shape too. He’ll have a one-year rabies vaccination and other things cats need. I don’t think he could adjust to domestic life via the Austin Humane Society. I hope he chooses to hang around my house like Caliban did for months. I have to resist the urge to break my promise about not replacing Miette.

I can’t wait to pick him up tomorrow. See how he’s adjusting to having more human contact for longer stretches.

The Edge of Seventeen: Worth Seeing

This coming-of-age flick was sadly released in the midst of the holiday movie season which is a bad move 99% of the time. Maybe Seventeen will get a second wind through streaming because I personally feel it belongs in the pantheon of the essential teenager/young adult stories penned by John Hughes…although the majority on my shortlist weren’t done by him (Better Off Dead, Racing With the Moon, She’s All That, The Way Way Back and My Bodyguard are standards).

Set around today (2015-17), the story focuses on Nadine, an awkward 17-year-old teenager who has been disliked by her peers since kindergarten. Making matters worse, her older brother Darian is one of the popular kids and her widowed mother is a fragile mess. One bright spot since second grade is Nadine’s best friend Krista.

Things progress as they do on a daily basis for Nadine until her mother takes a long weekend to see some dentist she met on match.com. Having the house to themselves Nadine and Krista live it up: drinking, dancing, trying on mom’s outfits, etc.; Nadine declared the house is hers so Darian is supposed to get lost. It could’ve stayed that way if Nadine didn’t get drunk, vomit and pass out. While she was sleeping it off, Krista and Darian fall in love. Obviously Nadine is devastated and even makes an ultimatum to Krista, it’s her or Darian. Krista refuses to choose so Nadine decides for them and goes into a spiral of manic behavior on par for many teenagers.

Along the way Nadine tries to control her crush on bad boy Nick and remains apprehensive to the affections/friendship of classmate Erwin. She also excels at tormenting her mother, antagonizing Darian (despite being in the popular crowd, he’s really a good person and is saddled with being the adult due to his mother’s own immediate crises) and dumping on her history teacher, Mr. Bruner, played wonderfully by Woody Harrelson.

Is it funny? Absolutely, namely Mr. Bruner’s stoic responses to Nadine’s diatribes. Plus what teenagers think is “the most important thing” remains a universal point of humor throughout all eras. Sure there’s cell phones and social media in the story but they’re part of the set dressing, not the crux. So I think Seventeen will age well like Weird Science remains funny even though the computers/computer graphics are primitive by today’s standards. Another contributing factor on why the story and execution succeed is the involvement of the legendary James L Brooks as a producer. He wisely let director/writer Kelly Fremon Craig run this so I think he helped out by imparting his wisdom while letting Craig retain her vision. It’s a guess or wish fulfillment.

I didn’t get the chance to see Seventeen during its initial run, I lucked out on it turning up in a second-run theater I’m gaining respect for. As for you my readers/friends, I really recommend this. If you love the three good John Hughes Teen movies (Sixteen Candles, Weird Science and Pretty in Pink), give The Edge of Seventeen a go. You’ll probably laugh at how insignificant your problems back were then too.

Alea iacta est!…Las Vegas 17 A is go

I also changed the countdown widget since I really don’t give a crap about “celebrating” how many years I’ve officially been with Apple given their history of stiffing me on real promotions. The upside of remaining relegated as a senior phone monkey is Somara and I could finally schedule the vacation we were derailed from taking last year. The reason why we call this trip 17 A is that we are going to go back later for we have two opportunities to use our timeshare.

It was a very fortuitous decision. Our plane tickets were under $520 round trip, non-stop with Southwest! They’ve jacked their boarding fee again but I’ll let it slide. If it weren’t a vacation flight, I would not bother with the airline’s “one percenter” fee.

What will we do out there? I have little idea yet. I did consider seeing Steely Dan since my friend Ethan is a huge fan. We would’ve had a little get together with him and his wife Kelly but he nixed it, saying the band kind of phones it in. Sounds like a more affordable Eagles concert. Ray Romano and David Spade will be performing at the Mirage. Mmm, I would rather have a musical act as the trip’s centerpiece.

Well, we have a good stretch of time to figure things out. We’re still going to pursue favorite standbys: Pinball Hall of Fame, Caesar’s Palace for one dinner, Paris for one breakfast and the Maggi Republic Video Poker Series! If you have suggestions, you know how to reach me or post them as comments. I have a prize waiting for whoever writes the 500th comment.

RIP: Miguel Ferrer

Poor guy, knocked out by cancer at 61. Well he had quite a resume of his own and didn’t live in the shadow of his famous father Jose Ferrer.

His big debut was the OCP executive who approved the Robocop project and then got killed by Ronnie Cox’s thugs. However, Miguel’s most famous role was the insensitive coroner in Twin Peaks.

For me, he was a fantastic voice actor. Miguel’s deep growl made him perfect as the villain Shan-Yu, the Hun leader in Mulan. However, DC Animation casting him as the optimistic Martian Manhunter in The New Frontier was a perfect move too.

For the Love of Spock

Adam Nimoy’s loving tribute to his father was thankfully on Netflix since I don’t think this was distributed through any theaters in my area.

The documentary covers the life and career of Leonard Nimoy with a big portion dedicated to the beloved, cultural touchstone character he developed…Mr. Spock. There’s also his earlier appearances in movies, Gunsmoke, The Outer Limits and how he took on numerous everyman jobs to pay the bills until his big financial break in Star Trek. After Star Trek‘s cancellation, he jumped ship to Mission:Impossible and the stage: Fiddler on the Roof, Vincent Van Gogh and other things he got into: writing poetry, those hilarious music albums and photography.

The histrionics are broken up with interviews: fellow cast members, the new Star Trek actors, directors, his brother and sister-in-law, his daughter, fans and archival footage of Gene Roddenberry. I always thought he refused to appear in Star Trek: The Motion Picture or its original, Star Trek Phase II over typecasting. Nope, it was money, Paramount had stopped compensating Nimoy for using his image via advertising, toys, etc. I don’t blame him, I just he could’ve held out further and get a better story than a recycled TV pilot!

Adam injects some elements of his own life, namely his substance-abuse issues, divorce and short, tragic second marriage. It can appear to be a vanity move but I admit it’s critical to the overall narrative for there was a time he and his father weren’t speaking.

Overall it’s a great ode to Leonard Nimoy that even the most casual fan will enjoy. It’s a shame he didn’t live to celebrate Star Trek‘s 50th anniversary.

The futility of my job

Sorry if I’m dour for a while. I got stiffed on the position I tried really hard to get at work. In many ways, I wish I were eliminated in the first round instead of being dragged all the way to the third round. It’s just like the bullshit at Marquette for becoming an RA; however, I found out there I was torpedoed by a nepotistic hall director who was Jabba the Hutt’s girlfriend, aka Annie Aversa.

The smarmy e-mail also annoys me yet it’s been a standard line in my 18 years. I’m not going to bother to ask for their “feedback.” To me it’s just their excuses.

Now what? I really don’t know but I don’t feel really motivated to stay much longer given the recent attrition and tedium. There’s better opportunities in Austin and I think I would be a good addition to some place that’s growing, not standing still.

Farewell Regular Show

Regular Show‘s eight-year run on Cartoon Network came to an end last night. Sadly, I’m way behind on the show since DVDs only go to the third season, we don’t have cable and CN’s stuff is on the equally sucky, commercial-plagued Hulu. I have seen bits and pieces via on-demand when housesitting.

Anyway, Regular was either loved or despised by the people in my life, it lacked any gray in its following. For me, I am in the love camp. The show’s humor followed in the footsteps of other cartoons like Home Movies, Sealab 2021 and Archer. The animation was secondary because the conversations and absurdity is what made Rigby and Mordechai’s adventures hilarious. It was also the first CN show to actually spend the money on licensing some well-known rock songs to enhance the jokes: “Lies Lies Lies” by the Thompson Twins during the fibbing contest; “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain while the gang were tripping on hot sauce; and they springed for Bowie’s version of “Heroes” to make the show’s finale complete, not a cheap song to clear.

I’m going to miss the show and the characters’ silly catchphrases. It might live on through its comic book. I hope there will be DVDs to cover the gap. Adventure Time made it to Season Five on physical media.

The next question is what does CN have in store to replace (almost) everyone’s favorite park slackers. I’ve noticed that CN and Nickelodeon go through spells of several good shows and then several crappy ones, repeat. The only thing new CN has promoted is Magiswords. Pass. It’s even more boring than the Total Drama dreck they rebroadcast from Canada or Johnny Test, sadly these are both available on Netflix.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey ending

This old form of entertainment limping across the finish line wasn’t really surprising. Circuses such as it work just fine on TV and a live audience would be too busy looking at its phone to really care.

I did get to see this act twice as a kid. The first time I was really little and I recall we left early because I was very vocal in my concerns for the tightrope performers falling off the rope or something. Then we went again in grade school via some constant politicking I did on my parents who were not keen on this. Can’t remember what my brother’s stance was. I prevailed, mom managed to get tickets via another family that went every year and decided to give it a break.

As for the animal rights schmucks getting a hard on for their “success,” I say whatever, you just keep telling yourselves it was your lawsuits and not the public’s general apathy over a 19th century entertainment form. I agree on animals not being tortured for public display yet your dead wrong on “testing,” which puts them on par with vaccine deniers.

Anyway, farewell “Greatest Show on Earth.” Over a century is a pretty good run.

I missed Gamer’s Weekend 2017, but prayed to be drunk first!

However, hosts Kristin and Jeremy still gave me my commemorative drinking cup to He Who Sleeps Beneath the Ocean…your bud and mine, Cthulhu! I can’t remember what the foreign language says, maybe Jeremy Will chime in.

Although I couldn’t be down at the festivities, I did christen my new drink ware with a well-made cocktail at Pinballz as I accrued more gray hair during the Packers v. Cowboys game. Thankfully I didn’t need to cast a spell via the dark god to make the winning field goal but I did lose some sanity.
