La La Land: Must See!

Musicals in the modern era tend to fall into three camps for me. Film adaptations of musicals that had successful Broadway runs (The Producers, Into the Woods); remakes of past musical movies (nothing comes to mind but I know it’s been done); and lastly, something completely original (Xanadau). La La Land thankfully falls into the last camp. I’m actually surprised it was even made despite the casting of two popular stars.

La La is the journey of two young people trying to make their way in Hollywood. Mia is a struggling actress getting by at the coffee shop on the Warner Brothers lot. Sebastian is a jazz pianist getting by with odd gigs, saving up to start his own club. They’re an odd couple, especially when their previous encounters ended badly: cursing at each other in LA traffic and Sebastian’s firing from a restaurant. Third time is a charm; a party hosted by some big shot with Sebastian as the slumming keyboardist in an Eighties cover band. Their antagonistic relationship then evolves into a romantic one with them encouraging each other. Sebastian gets Mia to like jazz and inspires her to write a one-person play to compensate for all her heartbreaking auditions. Mia’s presence steels Sebastian to keep playing and take up an offer from an old college buddy (John Legend) to join his Pop band (it does have jazz influences). Eventually, matters start to go their way…or will they in the long run?

Personally, I have grown to love musicals in the last twenty years so La La piqued my interest but I prefer the Broadway iterations and even then, just the songs. I highly recommend La La with a money-back guarantee. The director did a kick-ass job integrating the musical/dancing segments without them feeling wedged-in or forced, see most Disney princess flicks in the Nineties on this complaint. My favorite song was Mia’s big audition in which the director and producer ask her to tell a story. Mia “talks” about the aunt who inspired her to be an actress; “Audition (The Fools Who Dream).” The performance made me weep a tad for it reminded me of “Hole in the River” by Crowded House and “Earthbound Starlight” by Duncan Sheik due to their emotional resonance. Lastly, there’s very little tied to modern technology with the dancing or songs so I think it will remain timeless, letting the viewers focus on the story today or ten years later.

Will La La join the ranks of other legends like Singing in the Rain, Funny Face, My Fair Lady, An American in Paris  and Grease? Or will it be a sleeper aficionados promote a generation later like Pennies from Heaven and New York, New York? Given Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as the stars, it can only be the former or nothing.

Alamo Extras: Black and white pieces from the Thirties; scenes from The Young Girls of Rochefort; trailers for Rebel without a Cause, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg; Tim & Eric doing a skit mocking jazz; an awful Eighties kid show from the UK involving singing/dancing; an Alamo presentation recommending the audience to check out Pennies from Heaven and New York New York (they were flops when they were originally released); finally, a list of four things that make musicals are great via clips from numerous films: set pieces, great dancing duos, the pretty women and their overall joyful mood.

Got my MST3K booster shirt!

I chipped on what became the biggest Kickstarter of all time and one of the first rewards arrived in the mail the other day. There were some post cards too but I can’t wear them.

Blood Bowl minis are ready!

Humans are sporting the Green Bay Packers’ colors.

Next up…learning the rules to the game! Meanwhile, my miniatures for Blood Bowl are looking fantastic thanks to Pierre’s painting skills. You can check his work via his site. I highly recommend Pierre! My next possible commission for him will be customizing my Rebel fighters for the X-Wing game, get accurate colors on my squadrons since FFG paints X-Wings, A-Wings and B-Wings with red and Y-Wings with gold. I want to have customized squadrons.

The true monsters of the Midway in Chicago colors.

Done with refinancing…

…for the third time.

I really wanted to call it quits after we did this for the second time but when the news broke about Wells Fargo (our former mortgage-note holder) getting busted in what amounts to fraud and there being no real punishment, it was time to vote with our money. It’s pathetic what the paltry responses have been from our governments. The CEO bails with a golden parachute. None of the people responsible will be seeing jail time. So what else was left to do.

Good thing we finished in time too. The Fed raised borrowing rates but we managed to get a lower rate than we were paying before. The setback on the percentage of what we own versus owe will be overcome within two years thanks to UFCU giving an amortization schedule for the life of the loan.

Norway is on right track by killing FM

This story made the rounds through NPR and other outlets which still actually feature information not involving a bigoted Barbie changing networks.

I don’t know the numbers and logistics for Norway but ‘Merica could go forward on this too. Practically everyone has a cell phone by now to be notified of an emergency, fewer and fewer are listening to ad-riddled FM anymore, including “underwritten” NPR affiliates; and active TVs are almost everywhere. Should there be a true emergency, I’m confident Faux News will not bother due to facts having a Librul bias and I’m good with them dying off.

What could we do with all that freed up FM bandwidth? Not sure. Maybe some telecommunication stuff the Republicans will auction off at a pittance. Whatever weakens the media barons I’m all for.

New Star Wars shirt

This awesome tribute to Star Wars and VJ-Day was purchased sadly right before Carrie Fisher died. It will be my personal memorial to her.

One childhood dream achieved

You have to weave through some junk at the core site, but you can go directly here to make your own pilot. I went with my Lego guy despite his lack of a chin for the strap.

This is as close as we’re going to get since we’re re-financing with a local credit union, screw you Wells Fargo for your fraudulent move that wasn’t properly punished.

Goodbye 2016…

…and please let the door hit on you the ass on your way out!

This month’s header is a graveyard to bury what many would agree was a terrible, crappy year on so many levels.

The Archie Renaissance part one

The universal response to Archie comics tends to be annoyance since they were rather formulaic and as one comic-book store employee states it best, they’re stories of what younger kids think teenagers are like. Well, maybe if we were living in the Sixties.

So a few years back, the publishing company behind America’s other eternal teenager, was acquired by new interests wanting to bring the characters into this century. Their initial offerings were putting Riverdale at ground zero of a zombie apocalypse and making Sabrina the new Rosemary’s baby. I thought I wrote about these but as I delved into the site’s archives, I haven’t. I’ll get to them. I want to focus on what has been done with the core title. For now I will say this, despite zombies being done to death, Afterlife with Archie has been more interesting than either version of The Walking Dead.

As for Archie it’s written by Mark Waid, the co-brains behind fan favorite Saga with Image and DC’s Kingdom Come. He has modernized Riverdale with the expected accoutrements: cell phones, their clothes and video games. Waid also restarts the Archie universe by having the title character’s story begin with him and Betty breaking up after being an item since kindergarten. The other segment to their famous love triangle, Veronica, hasn’t moved to Riverdale. Why Archie and Betty called it quits is kept a secret until issue four. The debut focuses on them trying to go their own separate ways despite their classmates speculating and trying reunite them.

After Veronica enters the picture, Archie is enamored of her. It’s not her money, it’s a je ne sais quoi quality because everybody else sees Veronica as a spoiled brat. Veronica’s attraction to Archie is mostly genuine but she also enjoys how he drives her father crazy. It’s her little revenge for moving to back-water Riverdale. Mr. Lodge’s motivation was to find an easy place to run for the US Senate (it worked for Hilary, RFK, the Bushes and the Rockefellers) and the last thing he needs is an accident-prone, red-headed teen ruining his campaign.

Waid didn’t ditch the other tropes the comic is famous for: Archie has bad luck with jobs, Jughead loves to eat, Betty is a tomboy, Veronica is vain and Reggie is a jackass. They wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t. I think there are two things Waid has done to make the New Riverdale enjoyable to old and new audiences. There’s a bigger, more diverse supporting cast. From personal experience, it’s possible to have such diversity in a small town if it was fueled by a Federal project. The other is getting permission to start over, re-introduce these characters so we can forget all the past assumptions. Are they accurate depictions of today’s teens? Hell no. It remains a fictional, practically fantasy, setting but I’m glad to have these American icons remade to suit the 21st century and before the upcoming Riverdale show starts. That looks like Archie meets Twin Peaks.

RIP: Carrie Fisher

I really thought she was going to make it when Carrie was moved to stable condition, but hey, 2016 didn’t think it was craptacular enough.

Like most people my age in Gen X, I first encountered Carrie as Princess Leia in Star Wars. Being eight going on nine, she was OK yet girls were still icky at that age; any person who claims otherwise is a big fat liar or was fed lines by an older brother. Her action figure was mandatory though. You can’t have a decent space opera without a princess or queen! I often had her in a role of political leadership with the crew of my numerous starships/fleets. However, interest in Carrie didn’t fly with mom when I asked if I could see The Blues Brothers movie. Should’ve known better, Mark Hamill being in Corvette Summer didn’t trick the parents into seeing an R-rated movie earlier.

Carrie definitely shone in Empire with her forceful personality. As for Jedi, she was under utilized. And yes, I have the thing for the metal bikini. When I first saw Jedi though, I didn’t think much of it, there were other girls and pop stars on my mind in 1983.

Lastly, it was awesome to see her in Awakens as a badass general in the Resistance. You can’t have a sequel telling the story of this galaxy a generation later without Leia, Han, Chewbacca and Luke. I wanted Lando but I can’t have everything. All the stories regarding her weight were rather pointless. Who gives a crap! She was almost 60 and endured a rough lifestyle in the Eighties, I’d cut her some serious slack. I know I won’t be Mr. Atlas then.

Outside Star Wars, I was often amused to see her in bit parts, doing voices in cartoons (I think she’s Peter’s boss on Family Guy) and writing books. Rumor has it she tried to punch up The Phantom Menace. Somehow I don’t think George took her advice and proceeded with a turd of a movie.

Thanks for everything Carrie. Your greatest contribution of Princess/Senator/General Leia Organa will live on to inspire millions and not just with girls.

The Red-Headed Stranger…Willie Nelson!

Of course it’s when Willie was younger, I’m willing to go with the Seventies before he started graying. Willie is also wearing his reading glasses because I couldn’t find a Lego head with the reddish beard in other capacity.

Now how could this be Willie? It’s just a Lego guy with a cowboy hat. Turn him 90 degrees…

Ta dah! His famously long and braided hair! I used Photoshop to make it redder yet I think it looks a tad weird.

Rogue One: Must See

Star Wars movie without a Skywalker focus was a rather risky move but holy crap, the people behind Rogue One pulled it off! The main impetus to the film’s success was pursuing a different style. While Star Wars tends to be a space opera. Rogue has more in common with the WWII genre Hollywood cranked out for a generation.

Fear not, there are no spoilers coming.

The story takes place some time before Star Wars (the original) yet there were plenty of surprises to offset how we all know it will end. Things gets rolling with the Rebels springing troublemaker Jyn from an Imperial prison. Rebel intelligence knows that Jyn’s father (Galen) is the primary engineer behind a secret weapon the Empire is developing. The plan is to have Jyn get Galen to assist, confess, whatever. We the audience obviously know the Empire is about to complete the Death Star so Jyn’s team will become the heroes behind the Rebel’s success at stealing the plans for Princess Leia.

Plot aside, it was a fantastic tour through the Star Wars universe by the way I’ve always loved the first movie. A galaxy filled with used equipment, nothing is clean or new, there’s just a “used” vibe when you see starships, clothes and weapons. Fans like myself were rewarded via the numerous cameos, not just characters but places and ships! Disney’s synchronicity continues too if you recognize those appearances.

Rogue was a huge thrill because as much as I liked The Force Awakens, Abrams’ take still didn’t do anything terribly original: a third Death Star, a secret smuggled by a droid and a reluctant hero/heroine taking on the Empire’s successor. Force could be a reboot of the 1977 classic. Rogue fills in the continuity/history gap for me and my peers while providing a kick-ass action movie for those who aren’t as fanatical like my friends Helen or Cindy. As an RPG fan, Rogue resembled a game session brought to life!

Alamo Extras: Kenner commercials; Asian kids re-enacting The Force Awakens; weird European guy singing about Yoda; Lucas japandering for a camera; Funny or Die’s “Droid Day” special; Burger Chef commercial for posters; comical mashup of the prequels psychically communicating to Rey in that scene in Force; guy on a unicycle dressed as Darth Vader playing the bagpipes; Sith cat; Robot Chicken bit involving the Emperor trying to get his contractors to keep it down; “All By Myself” gag with Force‘s final scene; Bad Lip Reading’s hilarious “Seagulls” song.

Christmas reunion with my group

Yesterday, I had lunch with two of the three people in my group over the Summer in getting well. It was awesome to see Tiffany! Amy too but I see her more often in a follow-up matter. We all caught up, talked movies, healing matters, work and when we can get together again since Lisa couldn’t be there. Tiffany also gave us these cute “Dammit Dolls” to assist with stress. Time like this always make me glad I met them all.

Our Lego avatars are ready for Rogue One

Well, they’ve been ready for a few days. We saw the movie Thursday night, review coming without spoilers. Somara is dressed as Captain Andor and I am the U-Wing pilot which I found out is really General Merrick/Blue Leader. It’s cheaper than getting the real costumes.
