The Secret Life of Pets: Rental at best

secretlife

Universal tries to do something other than another Minions or Despicable Me sequel and it’s a mediocre Toy Story ripoff with animals instead of toys. I guess they were counting on Louis CK and Kevin Hart to carry this stinkburger through.

How is it Toy Story? Max is the beloved dog until his owner brings home another, larger, boorish dog named Duke. Max is jealous, Duke infringes on Max’s turf and then they go on a crazy journey across New York, trying to get home. In the end, Pets is yet the latest mediocre cartoon divorced dads love because it keeps the kids entertained for a couple hours at a reasonable price.

Alamo Extras: Old film strip of showing dog tricks around the Thirties; cat movie of it playing with a toy; newsreel of a human dressed as a cat doing contortions; cats in boxes; dog grooming for a fashion show; cat getting a bath; dog birthday party; trailer for Secret of the Magic Island (truly an awful movie); animals playing instruments; lifeguard cartoon; a pug being cute in a wading pool; cats can’t be trained movie; Japanese chimp movie; dogs on skateboards; cat playing basketball.

Inaugural X-Wing game at Rogues Gallery

starwarsbattle0806

I participated in what I hope will be one of many X-Wing battles at my comic book store. It was also an opportunity to break in the new gaming mat Matthew and Kawika bought me as a cheer-up gift. I played with three strangers in a 300-point battle (what you see there). I teamed up with the other guy to be the Imperials, flying four TIE fighters and two TIE interceptors. Although the battle didn’t reach a conclusion, I did pretty well, I only lost one TIE.

RIP Jack Davis

My last delayed Obit, I promise.

MAD magazine wouldn’t be the same without Jack. He had a great eye for accuracy and caricature. In many ways, his style brought out the humor and absurdity in what the magazine was parodying.

Thanks for making my childhood fun and participating in what I considered subversive in my war on adults!

“Weird Al” is my co-pilot!

minial

A recently released action figure who comes with two heads; his pre-1999 look and his current look; one interchangeable hand; to hold a microphone instead.

I currently have him sitting on my work server to keep it company while I’m away on weekends and nights!

RIP Jerry Doyle

It’s sad how all the Babylon 5 actors are dying off so quickly. By my count, about half of the principle cast is gone which rules out any real reunion.

For a long time Jerry played a favorite, the cynical yet reliable Mr. Garibaldi, the station’s chief security officer. His alcoholism was a decent, realistic crutch but I felt it wasn’t executed plausibly since I got a front-row seat to the actual behavior in college through a wing mate.

He never really did too much before or after B5 as you’ll see his credits are pretty brief on imdb.com. It might explain why he then joined the ranks of other D-listers with politically right-wing views that tend to be aligned with Birthers, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage (he would sub for him) and others I feel just bitch about sour grapes…aka, they blame Liberals for why they’re not as famous as they think they deserve to be. Nevermind Bruce Willis, Stallone, Ah-nold and Clint Eastwood.

Putting aside his toxic politics and book, I’m sad to see Jerry pass. He did a great job acting on B5 which contributed to this show going toe-to-toe with Star Trek:DS9.

Finding Dory: Worth Seeing

findingdory

It’s not quite Inside/Out but this Pixar sequel is far superior to Monsters U and the orifice gouging Cars 2. I’m still bummed the studio plans to churn out sequels (Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2) yet they pulled through on Dory.

A year has passed since Finding Nemo and while learning about the big manta migration, Dory finally remembers her family along with their possible location, a oceanic research facility. There’s a journey to get there followed by hilarity from the various resident ocean creatures held in the facility until they are well enough to return to the Pacific. That’s about all I’ll say regarding the plot.

Dory succeeds as a sequel by avoiding the major flaw I have in them, it doesn’t keep all of the original cast and then pile on new ones into the mix. The only returning characters are Marlin, Nemo and Dory with appearances by the teacher manta and the surfer sea turtles. Kids will be entertained, they’re relatively easy when it comes to animation. Adults? I think it passes muster.

Stay to the end with the closing credits.

Alamo Extras: an old cartoon of a fish playing hooky from “school”; newsreel sequence of a deep-sea diver; clip of a Diver Dan story; the trailer for The Incredible Mr. Limpet; a claymation demo showing memory; Pixar in a box presentation; clip from a Japanese kid show called Gimme Gimme Octopus and you can see the influence on Yo Gabba Gabba!; a TED talk discussing how an octopus moves and hides; octopus playing the piano cartoon.

RIP Garry Marshall

Another posthumous obituary to a person who helped ABC TV dominate in the Seventies with Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy. Of course a younger generation recalls him for directing the awful “modern” My Fair Lady flick Pretty Woman which made Julia Roberts the bigger deal she ever deserved. Garry also made cameos as an actor too. Recently I was watching Albert Brooks’ Lost in America and Garry played a Las Vegas pit boss and I recall him being a guest on The Simpsons.

Universal comparison

Makes you think how small our world is and how immense the multiverse is theoretically given we can only “see” back about 13 billion years and change.

Running back on track!

It has been a long-time coming too. Exercise does help me feel better yet it kept being put off while I was recovering. When I returned to work, I took things in baby steps (and still am) by getting to work early enough to clean up at the gym. This week, I got back on the treadmill and I’m sticking to short distances because I get winded too easily. Every couple of days I will raise the goal. Eventually I should return to my glory days from several years ago, when I could run over three miles without batting an eye.

Keep watching the progression bar on the right.

RIP Darwyn Cooke

This tremendous talent passed away in May but I didn’t want to ignore Darwyn so he’s my initial obituary entry for catching up while I was out sick.

Darwyn had a distinctive style which most people recognize via his masterpiece mini-series The New Frontier. For my money, it was an impressive story covering DC’s transition from the Golden to Silver Age; the Fifties to the early Sixties. What made him even more amazing was time as an animator for the Batman cartoon of the early Nineties. This experience helped him stay involved in adapting Frontier into a direct-to-video feature.

This month’s header, DS9 final

No luck finding a picture of the seventh season’s cast that was wide enough for the header but I think I made a good try. Not sure why the hell a space station would need a counselor when they’re orbiting a planet which probably has plenty of therapists and other qualified experts.

Happy belated birthday to me

Yeah yeah yeah, I have been rather absent from my own site but I was rather sick and uninspired through my illness…and in general. However, I got some stronger and better treatment in which I feel much, much stronger through.

So get ready for a slug of backlogged stories, reviews, posts, whatever. I am also getting closer to my 500th real comment. Remember, there’s a prize and I mean a good one too for the author of number 500.

Thirteen years of marriage!

Hard to believe I made it this far! Well, not really. Somara is truly a great match for me after all the past girlfriends I had (very few) that could be into the geeky stuff I like. The beauty is, I don’t need to say I’m working late to go play D&D with friends as I once did with Carrie.

It’s a “school” night so we’ll probably just have a nice dinner. We had our celebration early, the latest Weird Al concert in Austin.
