Deadpool: Wait for Netflix or rent

deadpool

Deadpool the comic-book character has never been my thing. I like funny comics. I’ve never been averse to the ultra-violent neither, trust me, Give Me Liberty and Lone Wolf and Cub remain favorites; the latter was done by Frank Miller before he became a crazy nut job. I just can’t get into Rob Liefield’s creation which got hijacked into Marvel’s version of Ambush Bug and to some extent, Harley Quinn in DC. It also doesn’t help that he’s a favorite of many people I can’t stand, right alongside the Firefly Fascists who continue to gush over the short-lived, mediocre Sci-Fi show. I once picked up an issue of Deadpool while Brian Posehn was co-writing it…boring.

Being a superhero movie launch, the focus is on Deadpool’s origin. Nothing terribly different than Iron Man or Captain America. What the film makers change up is the execution: a high body count, winking at the camera, self-awareness (Ryan Reynolds making jokes about himself/his past mis-steps) and Fox gambling on making an R-rated movie, a rating which is often the kiss of death. Does it work? Well, the money Deadpool is making says it did. For me, not really. I mainly went because Somara wanted to see this and in exchange, I get to drag her to something she finds boring, usually an art-house movie or something genuinely funny/absurd.

To my friends who are casual movie attenders and/or viewers of the genre, I’d say pass on Deadpool. If you’re a fan of obnoxious “Bro” movies or anything starring Adam Sandler, Marvel and produced by Fox, you found your hero.

As always, it’s a Marvel movie so wait for the surprise at the end. I will admit, I was amused by what Deadpool paid tribute to.

Alamo Extras: Trailers for Green Lantern and Blade 3 (Reynolds was in those obviously); Deadpool’s scenes from X-Men: Wolverine Origins; Deadpool and Catwoman on the toilet as animation (dumb); Japanese action stuff such as their Wonder Woman and Moonmask the Band; Rob Liefield drawing Deadpool; Rob Liefield and Todd McFarlane drawing a character on the spot as Stan Lee pitches an idea; Deadpool appearing in a Spider-Man cartoon; Bea Arthur and Madame doing comedy; Spider-man v. Deadpool at basketball; Shogun Assassin clips (aka Lone Wolf and Cub); Spike Lee’s Levi’s commercial with Rob Liefield; Conan O’Brien getting a massage from Deadpool; Kid cartoon for a chimichanga; Regular Show clip of the characters singing about a chimichanga; A chimichanga song; Deadpool in Japanese; Deadpool teasing kids dressed as the X-Men; Action clip of Deadpool as a chicken; a bunch of cosplayers dancing as Deadpool.

Fantasy Flight Games’ customer service is excellent!

One Saturday, my friend Matt and I were going to play X-Wing but this time, I would have to field a “big” ship, namely the Rebel Transport you may recognize from The Empire Strikes Back. “Big” ships are really the low-end capital vessels in the game which move like slugs when fighters, bombers, escorts and small freighters are involved. To add insult to injury, the Rebel Transport is unarmed! What good is it? Well, it can provide support for the Rebel fighters through electronic warfare against Imperial TIE fighters and/or coordinate the Rebel pilots against the enemy.

There was a problem though. I lost the ship template which goes under the mini. It has the stats, firing arc (for the EW) and acts as the short-hand for when you move the ship in the game. So I went to FFG’s web site, found the customer service link and then requested a replacement with its price. It took about a week to receive a response by correspondence. This didn’t bother me, they probably receive a slug of requests over the rules, spam and/or cranks. What blew my mind was they sent me the whole pack of cardboard stuff for free! Not just the ship template, the whole pack which contains shield tokens, cards with stats on various transports (they have individual names), etc. Nice! Good thing I bought a second transport ahead of time. My original plan was to just wing it with two via one set of stats to copy.

Thanks FFG! Can’t wait for their upcoming Ghost and Phantom from Star Wars: Rebels to arrive at Rogues Gallery! Meanwhile, now I need to protect two transports from Matthew’s rapacious Imperial raiders as Rebel forces try to evacuate whatever planet.

Change of birthday plans, like a cancellation

It’s good news and bad news. I’ll start with the bad…Dana Gould cancelled for being the opener to my private screening of Planet of the Apes. The good news…his TV show was picked up by IFC and should air by the end of the year!

Yeah it sucks but I would prefer Dana have a successful, in-demand career over my personal vanity project. Besides, I’ll get to see him and say hello at Moontower in a couple months.

I’m open to suggestions for this year, you know how to reach me. Don’t feel sad, I managed to get the Czar package of VIP for Weird Al this Summer too.

Welcome to March Star Trek

This month’s header is the third incarnation of Star Trek. You may recognize (unfortunately) the uniforms and cast from the horrible 1979 film which could’ve prevented the story from continuing until Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett saved the franchise. It wasn’t always the case. The movie recycled all the plans, designs, etc. from the show’s anticipated return to TV…Star Trek: Phase II which would be the cornerstone of the new commercial network Paramount.

There were a few problems. Paramount didn’t learn NBC’s lessons on when to schedule the show. They were going to have it on Saturday evenings. As if nerds didn’t make weekend plans? The VCR’s affordability was a few years away too. Leonard Nimoy refused to return. He was going to be replaced by David Galtreaux playing a full-blooded Vulcan named Xon. I think Nimoy was OK with a guest appearance due to one episode having him as the head of the Vulcan Science Academy.

The final nail in the coffin was the year 1977 and a little independent film called Star Wars. This made Paramount think again. They obviously didn’t think too hard for they just recycled the show’s pilot and padded it into a rather dull movie. On the upside, Leonard Nimoy agreed to reprise Spock.

Eventually, Star Trek did come back as a weekly show in 1987 and Paramount stupidly let Roddenberry run the first season in which he recycled his Phase II ideas again via Riker (aka Decker) and Troi (aka Illia) the alien empath.

I’m glad Star Trek II ditched these uniforms. They resemble pajamas and probably induced more audience members to fall asleep. Sadly, they’re canon.

Exercise is back on track…maybe

Austin weather has improved to the Spring levels we like. I’m 90 percent over the flu. I’m getting my life back into a consistent routine. Time to hit the treadmill again! Same for the stair master.

Well, it can only get better. Today’s run was el crap-o, a mere 0.67 miles. Tomorrow promises an improvement, probably 0.75 miles.

Keep watching for my progression bars finally filling up!

Happy Leap Day!

Ahh, the somewhat weird event we have every four years because the Earth can’t follow the precision of a Cesium atom!

I wonder how long it really took Astronomers and other related Scientists to figure out the compromise of getting an extra day into the system? Legend has it the Egyptians already knew the world’s revolution was 365 days while other cultures stuck with the lunar-based calendar; they say Cleopatra convinced Julius Caesar to make the shift.

Marquette Day 2016

National Marquette Day for Austin was different this year. The nice coordinating lady Annette booked us to meet at the relatively new Geno’s East on Sixth Street. Nice. Southside Chicago-style deep-dish pizza without the chain-smoking, obnoxious accent and dictator who somehow has the title of mayor.

We lost of course to the number one team in the nation…Villanova. Didn’t matter. I was glad to meet some other fellow alumni including a gentleman who just finished up at UT and he will be teaching corporate communications at my alma mater‘s division! May he not regret the weather! Austin around this time of year is hard to forget when you’re still freezing your butt off in April.

Rest in Peace Murray

murraywheeler

This last year has been pretty rough for I lost another old co-worker from Apple and he was a former boss too. Murray was a different case though. Back when I joined as a temp in 1995, I had the good luck to be in the tiny PowerBook division…well, it was before the 5300 disaster. After New Year’s 1996 and Apple’s stock tanking from $47/share to $12 thanks to this computer alongside everything else Apple made being crap, PowerBook was re-organized from two teams to one with Murray now in charge. There was a lot of groaning and complaining from the vets over him. Seems he had a reputation for being a hardass. Truth was, Murray was someone who didn’t suffer fools gladly. The vets who were upset were often the lazy people trying to find a way not to take phone calls (some things never change in my opinion except now the slackers are rewarded through their ass-kissing skills). I remember him saying “If your goal is to be here and not take phone calls, I suggest you get another job.” Me? I thought this was the job.

In the end, Murray was very gracious to me. He let me attend a funeral at the last minute I wanted to be at (Bob Adams, a University Towers security guard everybody loved); he gave me my get-out-jail-free card after a really awful call (things were tense for Apple and its bad run of products); and most of all, he was critical to helping me get the job I eventually landed at PowerComputing. I recall him saying, “If I had a choice, I’d hire you but the truth is Apple just isn’t.” This stung yet I knew he was a fan/friend of the guy who defected to PCC and was building a stronger support organization. This led to my career flourishing.

Time for a new tree

deadtree1

When I bought my house, it came with two trees in the front yard. Little did I know the sub-par labor that planted them packed the roots too tightly on one. Eventually the tree closest to the driveway died after a decade of struggle. We had plans to remove the giant dead stick but a very cold and windy day made the decision for us Tuesday. The poor thing snapped at its trunk.

Fear not, the tree didn’t fall on anyone or anything important. My in-laws graciously came by today to chop it up. Then they hauled away the parts no one will use for firewood, namely my cool neighbor and trainer Niko.

Pretty empty in there.

Pretty empty in there.

Next up…tree shopping!

Welcome Penelope!

penny0

Yesterday the Derrs delivered on child number two, a little girl. Penelope does resemble Jeremy around the mid-face areas. This works pretty well, Robin will have a friend to drink tea with, not just dolls!

Victory over the Flu of ’16

Despite getting a free flu shot, I still suffered through a week of…

 • Joint ache
 • Headache
 • Chills/fever with the macaroni sweats
 • Loss of appetite
 • Dehydration (because you don’t want to drink)

It’s finally over as I powered through with soup for the last two days.

Finally, some merchandise for this overlooked show

missionhillshirt

I broke my promise on acquiring new T-shirts yet I will have something “retire” to make room for this. However, I had to have it. Thanks to the show’s co-creator, Bill Oakley, for plugging the vendor on Twitter. I’ve ditched FB for the wit and speed of Twitter. Bill is someone I recently stumbled upon to follow.

As much as I would love this show to make a return, over 15 years have passed so I think it’s a rare exception for a legitimate reboot. Keep the core dozen adventures the same, update them for their tech and timeliness (The Real World, add cell phones, etc.). Then again, sometimes it’s best to just remember it for what it was and enjoy the brief revival Mission Hill received through [adult swim] during the network’s infancy.

Pathetic tailgaters…who can save you now?

mingthemerciless

Somehow I don’t think Ming the Merciless drives a hatchback…unless he’s still in exile from Mongo, plotting to get his throne back.

Bob’s food is Punk versus the chains

bobsflag

Spotted at Waterloo Records! Another fellow Bob’s Burgers fan wearing a Punk Rock mashup. I wonder if Loren Bouchard and his crew have ever done a Black Flag-sounding song for the show yet. Futurama has had their cast sing “TV Party” during the closing credits.
