Good night and good luck Jon, thanks for it all

jonstewart15Tonight is the conclusion of Jon Stewart’s run on The Daily Show which will be greatly missed not just by Libruls and Socialists but by people who aren’t factually challenged. Despite how much Jon skewered the Republicans, Faux News, Conservatives and Libertarians; all the other camps were called on to the carpet when they tried to tell the world “2+2=5.” The earlier groups appeared more often on the show because they just made it too easy.

Politics aside, The Daily Show went after pick-up artists, pornographers, flat earthers, spammers and other flimflam sleazoids trying to get away with a false narrative. Those Jon and the gang angered probably never watched for they were too busy pushing the “liberal media” myth.

When Craig Kilbourn left around 1999 and I heard that Jon Stewart was taking over, I felt The Daily Show was dead. Many forget how Stewart wasn’t a very strong host of anything  plus I hardly found anything he said funny. Before the gig he was a weak co-host on Short Attention Span Theater Comedy Central in the early Nineties and his talk show on MTV was dreadful. He was quickly filling the role Billy Crystal had until SNL and Dave Chapelle with Chapelle Show; a hack somehow constantly being foisted on us by a showbiz power broker. The first glimmers of hope happened during the last two seasons of The Larry Sanders Show when Jon was added to the writing staff and played a version of himself as Larry’s new permanent guest host. He poked fun at himself, his past work/shows and once or twice was a villain (he seduced guest Winona Ryder away from Larry in the green room).

With The Daily Show, Jon did the right thing by hiring an Onion staff writer and moving the program more toward current events. I wish he could’ve brought the co-creator Lizz Winstead back into the fold since I read this was what she wanted to do originally; Kilbourn screwed her over. This decision reinvented the show and Stewart at the same time while making The Daily Show the true successor to Politically Incorrect.

Imitators have followed. Jon Oliver’s show is more focused, has more outrage thanks to the HBO safety net. Real Time is a modified Politically Incorrect with the HBO net, I think pay TV suits Bill Maher better. The Colbert Report ended already and was the perfect follower, satire news chased by ironic editorializing. David Spade’s Hollywood gossip thing wasn’t different enough to last. I do like Larry Wilmore’s stuff so far, he was a hilarious Sr. Black Correspondent, I wish CC had the spine to keep the original title The Minority Report and the host needs time to gain traction, I think he could get there within a year. Patrick Stewart and Seth McFarlane have Blunt Talk on the horizon but it seems to resemble a more updated Larry Sanders. Then comes the Right’s hilariously awful attempts to replicate Stewart’s success, formula and relevance. They’re 0-2 lately. It’s not impossible since there are competent comedians with a Right-wing viewpoint on stage and/or in their personal lives (Drew Carey, Nick DiPaolo, Larry Miller…you thought I was going to mention Dennis Miller, nope, he became pretty irrelevant after HBO dropped his ass). The people who are put in charge of such a project have fallen flat because they forget to present actually funny material and if your host needs to telegraph/explain the joke, then the host is inept, their politics don’t matter here.

Thanks again Jon. It’s troubling you did a better job at calling bullshit on Clinton, Bush II, Obama and the usual gang of idiots than our SCLM has. I blame the election of Reagan for making SCLM so timid. I think we’ll be seeing him around in the producer role and other cameos in the near future. Maybe he will be The Daily Show’s new Sr. Sr. Correspondent.

Our Lego Comic Strip’s debut

To help myself unwind thanks to all the weird stress I’ve been experiencing lately, I have been putting together the cheap Lego sets I’ve scored or the cool ones I earned at Pinballz. Last weekend, I had a brainstorm at the public library with the contents of two City sets. Throw in a favorite piece of software Apple used to include for free and blammo! Semi-instant fun!

Somara and I will probably put together a shadow box…I mean, a soundstage for the Lego people to keep the lighting consistent. I’ll keep Photoshop around for the more complex effects iPhoto/Photos and Comic Life can’t do.

Enjoy! Click on the graphic below and follow (it’ll be easier on your eyes). I’m curious to read your suggestions on how to get to the next chapter.

Ant-Man: Worth Seeing

ant-manLet’s see…the Marvelverse streak is now 12 and this makes them the new champs. There were doubts since Ant-Man is more obscure than the B-list Avengers who have joined this Spring. I on the other hand remember, this character was a founding member in the traditional Marvel Universe. The movie had also been delayed due to rumors of Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) didn’t want to integrate into the overall universe via style or plot. At least he received credit with star Paul Rudd in writing the core story.

My biggest concern was how this appeared to be Iron Man redux in the trailers. Somebody has a big corporation being hijacked by another person who prefers to sell weapons to the highest bidder. The hero is a scoundrel on the road to redemption along the way. Instead of missiles or armored suits, it’s the ability to shrink while maintaining the same mass. Well, it was the same arc, the execution was just different in a few areas, mostly through humor.

I enjoyed how Ant-Man didn’t exist in a bubble. When Dr. Pym tells Scott about what’s at stake, Scott says, “Call the Avengers!” It’s the answer most people would give if they lived in such a universe. They never explain how ants come into play though; Pym is likely to be a Physicist, Entomology is an offshoot of Biology; I know, it’s just a movie. The writers did their homework on the species, namely how they utilized the Texas scourge…fire ants. Not for their painful bites but their ability to ball up into a raft to travel (I saw a documentary showing they’re originally from the Amazon, not a desert).

There’s plenty of surprises during the movie; the trailer didn’t eat them all up. Sit tight through the closing credits for the two surprises. The first pertains to Ant-Man 2 (Marvel aficionados know) and the second covers next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Ant is safe enough to take kids, the violence is cartoonish.

Alamo Extras: Space Ghost C2C gag involving ants; scenes from the fake movie Mant used for MatineeFantastic Voyage trailer; Pee-Wee Herman bit involving ants getting loose in the playhouse; Empire of the Ants trailer; ant scened from Honey…I Shrunk the Kids; snippets of the cartoon Inch-High Private EyeFor Y’ur Height Only trailer; a dumb Thai kid putting ants in his drawers; the failed Army Ants toy; finally…Alamo Drafthouse being mentioned in the comic book Ant-Man #1.

Adventures in Babysitting #1

Since I had some extra time off during my birthday week, I volunteered to babysit Ben. This gave Kristin the opportunity to do other work while I ran interference. Here’s a demonstration of Ben flexing his independence and power or as I call it, his best Godzilla imitation.

Weird Science turns 30 today

Weird Science probably isn’t on the short list of great John Hughes’ movies due to its audience being somewhat smaller in range than The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; the poor, oppressed teenage boys who get beaten up. A demographic that just isn’t well-represented in the cinema then nor now! Despite its offbeat direction and improbable ending, the movie has always resonated with me. I’m not exactly Gary nor Wyatt, more of a hybrid which most people are. I’m also grateful I didn’t grow up with an older sibling like Chet, I had a “cool-obsessed” younger brother. Weird did go on to be his only film to have a successful spinoff TV show if you consider being on USA for 88 episodes a success. Uncle Buck with Kevin Meaney and Ferris Bueller with an unknown Jennifer Aniston were on CBS and NBC respectively for about a season before they were cancelled. They copyright holders produced just seasons one and two on DVD sadly. I was skeptical when it debuted in 1994. The modified the premise a little, found a way to have continuing adventures with Lisa as a genie and I was won over. Seth Green even appeared as a classmate once.

The lessons it taught don’t mean much nowadays since “meek” nerds have become the new global bullies: Zuckerberg, Bezos, Musk and every other clown who has decided government doesn’t work; have joined forces with the traditional bullies. Seems the “Poverty Sucks” poster became a mantra.

No matter. As part of the Acceptance I have to learn in class, Weird remains close to my heart. It’s set in the Midwest. The main characters liked video games, Sci-Fi/Horror and their rooms had posters of bands Hughes liked; another sign of “not cool” in the Mid-Eighties. Gym class was often an excuse for reinforcing the social order, we all know what dodge ball is for. During my Senior year, gym ended up being a bummer because the class was small (nine people) and half the class smoked, so they were always in terrible shape, preventing any friendly games of anything. A few of us painted the logo on the Physics’ class windows for extra credit. I took a nice lady on a date to see this, then went back the following evening with my friends because we couldn’t stop laughing about it.

Today, the movie made its debut in theaters. I can’t remember why I didn’t manage to catch it while I was in Bloomington-Normal beyond being 17 and broke. Weird didn’t arrive in Hazen until October or whenever homecoming was there. It’s anniversary is why I chose to make the logo my header for August…and to demonstrate how I’ve learned how to make GIF animations in Photoshop. It’s amazing what you can do when you dig through the Help in an application!

Is Alamo doing a celebration? Yes. The sucky part is the two screenings are both way down at the Slaughter Lane location. But I’m dedicated and afterwards, I will show off my new shirt memorializing the way we remember Kelly LeBrock.

Mental Floss provided some extra details about the movie too.

Happy birthday to Kate! (2015)

Of all the co-workers and friends I made during my seven years with Kenny’s Coffee Company, I had little doubt we’d still be talking to each other, occasionally hanging out. Why? Because we’re fellow Leos. We may be over a decade apart in age yet our birthdays are only separated by a day.

I’m just bullshitting since astrology is amusing and it’s cool when coincidences happen. I don’t really put any serious stock in this. I think Kate and I have stayed in touch due to us being somewhat like minded. Oh there’s differences in musical tastes, partners (Kate likes dudes, I prefer ladies) and probably food (I will never be able to shake off my Midwestern blandness); ergo we’re not Librul clones as my “like-minded” statement could be misinterpreted for. We’re in like-minded camp. This is something that can transcend age.

Where was I going with this? Kate is a bad-ass friend and in how my odd brain works, she is classified as a bass-ass, Texas niece. I’m glad she came into my life and I wish her all the best today. Moxie (her daughter) should know, if she needs a little help on getting Mom something killer, Uncle Steve can assist.

Happy Birthday to me ’15

bdayavatar2015Took the day off from work as I traditionally do. Gotta’ suck up all those freebies you can for being a loyal customer at Alamo (saw Vacation), ate at Plucker’s and had my drink covered at Starbucks. Overall, it has been an alright day. I won’t be remembered as a great birthday, probably more on the bittersweet side due to the changes I’m trying to make on the horizon.

Thank you all for your fond wishes, cards and whatever.

I’ll close with a clever discovery from my fellow Leo Kate.

Back to the Future: 30th Anniversary Quote-along!

back2thefutureI wasn’t going to let this awesome replay anniversary slide away although the event we went to took place about four weeks ago. Universal has also announced they’re having the movie hit theaters for a limited time to celebrate. Alamo as always made this special in a few ways.

First I want to go back 30 years because the movie has a couple special places in my heart and memory. While Mom, Brian and I were contemplating our “relocation” to Tampa, we visited Grandma Maggi in Minooka during the holiday weekend. Somehow Cousin Leesa and I managed to escape to have some older teen…no, let’s go with young adult…time away from our younger siblings and the parents. I defer to YA due to Leesa being in college. I readily admit YA was a stretch for me. How Leesa pulled this off was beyond me. She was often harangued to be the adult in charge whenever our parents took off to see Grandma in hospice or whatever. I think she was also experiencing the bullshit I received a couple years later; you can’t leave the house, you need to be working, how else are you going to pay for college, etc. Throw in that Leesa is female, I figured there’d be an additional variable over pregnancy. Now add our family’s paranoid mindset, pregnancy is an airborne virus so we had to be extra careful in public settings!

Either way, I was appreciative of Leesa letting me tag along. She met up with a couple friends from high school (I think). We played mini-golf, hit the arcade to try out an electronic Trivial Pursuit machine and saw this new movie starring TV actor Michael J. Fox with Huey Lewis and the News providing the soundtrack.

The movie remains great. The memory of Leesa treating me as an intelligent peer at a time when my parents thought I was an idiot, Larry Flynt, budding junkie-drunk and/or all of the above, has always been what I associated with Back. I wasn’t a burden or an obligation to entertain. I felt genuinely welcome, had a great time and developed a better relationship with a cousin who I used to think of as a snotty, know-it-all. With the latter, remember, this was an inaccurate impression from grade school. I’m confident Leesa can paint an equally or nastier picture of me as a child; I deserve it.

After I was exiled back to North Dakota, I did have the jump on my classmates about the hit movie of the Summer. It eventually came to Hazen in September and ran there for a month. Let me give you an idea of what rarities got the first-run treatment in the far reaches of ND: Rambo 2, Rocky IV and Youngblood. Everything else you heard about through ads on TV/radio appeared four-to-six weeks after their initial release. You could drive to Bismarck or Minot though, they were on the same circuit as everybody else.

Reminiscing is over.

My shirt to celebrate. I love the Drew Struzan style.

My shirt to celebrate. I love the Drew Struzan style.

I hadn’t seen Back in a couple decades. I honestly can’t remember really. Maybe once on cable in college, that’s it. I did see Back 2 on cable or something in the last 10. I’ve never bothered with Back 3. Personally, the movie is perfectly fine without sequels yet it wasn’t ruined by them like The Matrix or every other comedy destroyed by continuation.

Does it hold up? Absolutely. Great timing and acting overcome the dated clothing, technologies and slang from 1985 (really 1984). It remains funny too. Those lines such as “You are my density!” and Dr. Brown’s speculation on the near future regarding limited nuclear war, gravity and human progress. I hope they never, ever make a sequel. Besides, the window for today’s Reagan-is-prez joke has passed.

1985 Dr. Brown: If you’re from the future. Who’s president?

2015 Marty: Barack Obama.

1985 Dr. Brown: An Arab?

2015 Marty: No, the first Black president.

1985 Dr. Brown: A Black president? Ha! Who’s his vice president? Bill Cosby?

The biggest universal laughs beyond the differences between 1955 and 1985 are getting to meet your parents as Marty did. His father George was always a wimpy, peeping-tom doofus, dad’s bully Biff hasn’t changed beyond getting fat and discovering his mother Lorraine is a hypocrite; when she was a teen, she was boy crazy, now she’s a suspicious drunk. The latter one does sound sad. I suspect I would find something similar with my mother had I got the chance to travel back to 1966-67.

I also want to throw in how I feel my enjoyment of the movie is now tainted by a book I read a few years ago. Anyone under 35 may not recall but during the height of Reagan’s Reign of Error, there was this myth perpetuated about how perfect and idyllic the Fifties were. It didn’t necessarily begin with Reagan’s coronation in 1981, I would blame people getting nostalgic after seeing American Graffiti which oddly is set in the early Sixties. Either way, Gary Marshall’s Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley had already gotten the ball rolling on incorrectly remembering the past to white-out the more recent past called the Sixties and Seventies. Sure Marty visits his hometown in 1955 which is pre-Elvis, Sputnik and the start of Ike’s second term which is practically the waning Forties and pre-Fifties, but downtown remains clean, occupied by small businesses and his suburb has just broken ground. It’s a stark contrast to what he is familiar with in 1985: downtown is dirty, rundown, abandoned and there’s visible vandalism at the entry way of his suburb.

Below are all the cool things they handed out for us audience members…

Icons would appear for when to scratch these.

It was surprisingly filling despite how small this appears to be.

Everyone "flaps" this whenever the clock tower is mentioned.

I forgot to bring along the other props but they’ve been used before in other movies. A little skateboard keychain (McFly’s Tony Hawkish skills!) and an inflatable guitar to jam out a couple times; you know the scenes.

The show's special drink, the Flux Capacitor!

The show’s special drink, the Flux Capacitor!

After the movie, there was a party at the newer, smaller Highball. The band was dressed in Fifties gear while performing Eighties tunes. How fitting. I drank both servings of the spiked punch.

A little fan who probably got to this for the first time on the big screen.

He probably saw this for the first time on a big screen.

Thanks Alamo! You made a pleasant memory of 1985 good again. It helped that the movie still holds up after our hoverboards never appeared. Anyone have a special memory?

Alamo Extras (Pre-Show): Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure trailer; “Movies in Real Life” skits; the Huey Lewis and the News video for “The Power of Love”; Plug for the Back to the Future ride at Universal (it’s gone now); trailer for Back to the Future 2.

Four thousand posts

A nice spot between my birthday and wedding anniversary. It’s 27 days late but as the cliché goes…better late than never.

What to talk about? How about the math.

Let’s see, this format began on July 3, 2005. That makes 3677 days. So divided by 4000, the site is averaging 1.088 stories/posts per day.

Onward to 5000!

Happy 75th Birthday to Bugs Bunny

A landmark birthday for a signature cartoon character. I regret not having anything bigger for him but I think the first fly-by of Pluto and more urgent matters in my life give me a pass. The Time-Warner Empire on the other hand has no excuse.

Maybe they’re saving it all up for the latest reboot I’ve read on rumor sites. I loved the more recent The Looney Tunes Show which took a SitCom approach; Bugs and Daffy living as themselves with other characters as neighbors or co-workers. They still kept certain traits we’re familiar with over the years: Daffy is lazy, irresponsible; Bugs is clever, well-liked; Yosemite Sam is ill-tempered, etc. The musical interludes were somewhat out of character with the show’s tone alongside the CG-based Coyote v. Roadrunner shorts.

The Looney Tunes franchise needs someone with a real vision beyond monetizing the characters through video games, shirts and diapers. People aren’t interested in cartoon characters that lack personality and/or have lame-ass stories. Bugs and the gang need a Craig McCracken or the second coming of Chuck Jones to put them on the right track. Otherwise, I fear WB will just keeping repeating these futile restarts with yet another Zack Snyder type at the helm.

Bonne Anniversaire Christina!

The 27th is always a great and eventful day. My trilingual friend who turned out to be the best legacy of working at DG celebrates her special day (I already knew Rad via Stvee, he doesn’t count). What’s the plan? No idea. I’ll ask later after I’ve written her a direct message via e-mail. From me, it’s obviously this post and an overdue (by about a year) gift to keep the theme rolling. What Christina is receiving remains awesome because it covers a couple past anniversaries (or birthdays) and something on the horizon.

Twelve years of marriage

LegoAnn12

With some help from a vendor at Brick Fiesta, I modified our Lego avatars to join the out-of-stock, business-card holder. Not sure which language it’s aimed at. The darned thing only comes with three Es, two Ss and one U but two Qs? With the latter, I’m going to say…not English because U follows Q 99% of the time.

Onward to number 13. May it be luckier than 12 with all the crazy crap going on this year.

In honor of their return…

rickandmortyatbrickfiestatexas

…I give you Lego Rick and Morty! Tonight they kick off their second season on Adult Swim with more whacky adventures across time, space, reality and unprotected liquor cabinets.

I know Morty wears a yellow shirt but Lego doesn’t do yellow torsos unless the mini fig is a swimmer, surfer or bodybuilder, oh yeah, and male obviously. Rick is as spot as you can get unless I repainted and sculpted a Lisa Simpson figure.
