Free Comic Book Day 2015!

I finally received my Avengers membership

I finally received my Avengers membership

Nerd High Holiday Number Three and the oldest of them has grown enormously this year. There was quite a line in front of Rogues Gallery. I wasn’t there as soon as they opened because I had the opportunity to have coffee with my long-standing co-worker/friend Nick alongside his wife Kim and fun daughter Megan. Their son Patrick had a band function which is why he couldn’t come along. Don’t’ feel sorry for him, it was a mandatory trip to Schlitterbahn.

Despite the line, we got in and out pretty efficiently. The choices were really good too. I focused on five books for my little friend George. Randy was nice to me since he let me pick out one thing for myself (an anthology of Archie’s new, revamped superhero line starring Black Hood, the Shield and the Fox).

It’s always fun to see kids enjoying themselves in their costumes. I feel America has come a long way. Back when I was much, much younger. Anyone wearing costumes was only acceptable with small children. By the time one was say older than eight, they were branded a dork, especially if you were in middle school or higher.

I convinced Megan to join the Avengers.

I convinced Megan to join the Avengers.

Beyond the free stuff, I picked up another copy of Cleopatra in Space to give to Megan. It’s a great comic I need to write about. It’s awesome due to the heroine being a young girl (the Cleopatra) while it’s not dumbed down or filled with “shopping.” I often try to find comics and other stories featuring the ladies being large and in charge. Barbie has her moments but I don’t believe in anyone being “helpless.” For Nick and Kim, I had to score them the first trade paperback of the acclaimed Afterlife with Archie. It’s not for kids, it’s more adults who want to see the Archie gang in a different style and situation.

Andy Kindler & Eddie Pepitone

andykindlerandeddiepepitoneThese two comedy staples I ran into by accident at the after party. Andy I recognized instantly but I knew immediately when I saw the NY Rangers cap he was talking to Eddie.  I’m confident most of you friends are going, “who are they again?” Well Andy has been a longtime comedian I’ve seen on TV since the Nineties. He was a frequent patient on Dr. Katz and I think he was a minor character on Everyone Loves Raymond. Andy often made me giggle as Paula’s boss on Home Movies and today he’s Mort the mortician on Bob’s Burgers. Eddie I got hooked on through The Dana Gould Hour. He’s a hilarious guest speaker plus he was an enslaved employee of Paddy’s on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and now makes appearances as Reggie on Bob’s Burgers as Reggie, the guy who runs the town’s deli.

I had a quick talk and thank you to them for all the cool work. They’re both funny yet I have a feeling they’re acquired tastes.

Study says most people stop listening to new stuff after 33…

…my immediate response to that was, no shit. If you removed my friends Chip, Mark, Angela and me, it would drop to 26 in my opinion, 22 if it were just the Midwest, or as I often call it, the Land where Led Zeppelin never broke up.

I wouldn’t consider the “study” to be terribly accurate nor scientific but anecdotally I agree because a wide range of people I know be it from close friends (the Silders, Hoser, Nelson, Steve B) all the way down to just acquaintances (Adam, Art). Often you hear the litany of “today’s music sucks, it stopped being good after [insert year].” It’s not completely their fault. Firstly, life does get in the way, often they’re called children. Next, music isn’t as important to them as it is to someone such as myself. I wouldn’t have demoted this aspect of me, even if I did chose to reproduce. Lastly, I think the shifts in technology have really encouraged more people, especially my generation and later to wall up via MP3 players, overpriced satellite radio and contemporary Oldies stations for the few clinging to FM. It can be the Eighties to early Nineties forever! Pass.

What I do consider to be the uglier and more dangerous element of this trend is how it manifests in Western thinking. This refusal to embrace the future proves while remaining in a nostalgic safety blanket reflects the problem of accepting other things. Admittedly, I’m not enthused to embrace some tech trends because I don’t trust corporations with my privacy. Tattoos are another; you think Mickey Rourke hasn’t aged well, try that Pearl Jam stickman. Back to my point, I just hate the 101ism which came out of the mouths of Boomers in the Eighties. I may have bored you all with this past story, but when I started out at Marquette and was in the heart of the Classic Rock Backlash; I vowed I would never grow up to be an old fart ramming the Cure, REM and Kate Bush down younger people’s throats. Trust me, after being told for years how I should get on my knees and thank god for the Beatles, I played the Meatman’s “One Down, Three to Go,” as my rebuttal.

It did make me the opposite, intolerant of the good material from the past. Over the last 10-15 years I’ve become re-acquainted with the Sixties and Seventies hits. When you have an iPod to play in the car, it’s easy to enjoy a deeper track by the Eagles again. Yeah, you heard me, I still like the Eagles and all their critics are mostly Johnny-come-latelies who’re Hipster D-bags addicted to the overrated The Big Lebowski.

Either way, I think I’m doing a good job training to maintain a balance between moving forward at 46 enjoying Spoon, Arcade Fire, Those Darlins, Dengue Fever and Charli XCX without irony while re-discovering the latest remasters of Led Zeppelin, Roxy Music and Replacements.

I want to thank my friends Angela, Mark and Chip namely for helping me stay connected to something that was always important to me since I was 14.

Blaine Capatch

blainecapatch

My after-party photo with fellow DM and hilarious joke-writer/teller Blaine! I’m not sure if I grammatically structured that last sentence, we’re only fellow DMs, I don’t write jokes, I only live them.

It was great to run into him. I praised his DM skills since he took over for Sark (he’s still on leave). Blaine told me he had something all planned out but Brian (Posehn), Ken (Daly), Dan (Telfer) and Steve (Agee) took off in another direction. I laughed, said, oh players always do that to us. He nicely let me know when he got back to LA, Nerd Poker would be recording this upcoming Tuesday. Hooray! Maybe another shout out for my alt-ego in D&D…Impavidus Goldfrapp.

I thanked him for coming to Austin and to have a safe trip home (his plane left at 5:30 am, yuck!) and of course, come see us soon. I definitely need to listen to the pilot ep again to jot down the stats of the first PCs, integrate Blackie Greene into my campaign. Every world needs a fast-talking, charismatic half-elf wizard/sorcerer who has the right one-liner at the right time!

X-Wing

x-wingTo close this year’s May the Fourth, I want to throw in the tabletop game I recently got hooked on, X-Wing. Normally I’m not big on games that are exclusively minis driven but my local store (Rogues Gallery) did a really good discussion about it on their weekly podcast. Selling the core game (shown above) for 15% off on the day the first issue of the new Marvel comic came out didn’t hurt neither.

It’s a pretty quick-paced and relatively easy game to play. Trust me, if Wil Wheaton and Seth Green can get in a fun skirmish, you too can master it. Sometimes I watch the episode again as a refresher/tutorial.

How does it work? Every fighter has a specific dial mapping out which maneuvers are at its disposal: go straight, do a 180, 90°-angle turn, etc. The model of fighter determines its abilities, not the pilot like a role-playing game tends to do. Pilots with the lowest skill rating move first followed by the rest in ascending order. Afterwards, the pilot with the highest skill rating fires first and we go back down in descending order. Should there be a tie, the Imperials move and fire before the Rebels. The core game includes the movement and firing rulers so you don’t have to play the game on a grid or hex-based map. There’s other stuff to arbitrate: collisions, debris, missiles, bombs, so on; they don’t happen very often unless you have the expansion packs containing fighters capable of these (TIE Bomber, B-Wing readily come to mind).

Determining the firing outcomes use these customized eight-sided dice with symbols/blanks on them. The red are are for attacks, green for evading. Whenever the red dice show an explosion, it’s a hit with the hollow explosion representing a critical. The defender responds with the green dice hoping for either an evade or focus icon. Fighters which have run out of hull points are destroyed. Obviously standard TIE Fighters doe this pretty easily, hence why you encounter more of them.

I do enjoy this game. It reminds me of the fun I used to have playing Blue Max with my sensei Lester. Another way I see it, X-Wing is the analog counterpart to the over-complicated computer games without a kajillion buttons and socially retarded opponents online. This also brought back the memories of my numerous space battles I orchestrated as a kid with my Legos supplementing the few official Kenner toys.

The game isn’t perfect. One enormously missing element is the third dimension. I figure FFG excluded this for simplicity. My other gripe is the basic game. It only includes one X-Wing and two TIE fighters. To really have a decent battle you need hunt down additional minis. Thankfully FFG’s recent shortage at the beginning of this year was relieved. Diehard Star Wars fans know, Imperial wings are composed of four TIEs and Rebels are three of the same (X, Y, A or B).

More expansion elements are out there too. Larger vessels such as the Falcon, Slave I and the Rebel transports from The Empire Strikes Back. Even larger starships have joined the game to change up the battles’ dynamics: the Tantive IV and an Imperial raider to balance the scales. X-Wing is getting sucked into what I call the Warhammer trap with the recent introduction of a third faction representing bounty hunters and crime syndicates. I only bought the modified Headhunters and Y-Wing for their neat paint jobs.

The good outweighs the bad by a huge margin but I would throw in the caveat about how expensive the game can be.

Next up in my mind…how to get it to integrate somewhat with WOTC’s roleplaying game.

Kaiser Chefs

kaiserchiefs

Photo from the Austin American-Statesman

They canceled last Fall but returned last week to play their first headlining show in Austin since…I have no idea. I think the Kaiser Chiefs usually appeared at Austin’s numerous festivals. Didn’t matter to me, it’s often better to catch a band when they have at least three albums, with these guys it’s five (their last two were composed of the same songs, I think one was for the UK, the other for the US). Contrary to the fickle music press, I never thought they stumbled much with the second record Yours Truly, Angry Mob, hell it’s one of my favorites of 2007 and not just for “Ruby.” They’re back on track with Education, Education, Education & War which was the tour’s main point.

Last Fall the opener was going to be Howler. Obviously this had to change, instead it was Priory and they were better than I expected, need to pick up their latest at Waterloo.

Back to the Kaiser Chiefs. The set as you’ll see here was past hits and current tracks. They only did one track from the underrated Off With Their Heads record, I would’ve gone with “Good Days Bad Days.” The big surprise was them covering The Who’s “Pinball Wizard,” I think they did a good job by capturing the spirit in the overplayed hit; I still enjoy hearing most versions occasionally, even Elton John’s.

Seeing them live? Only if you’re into them, they were good live. I doubt few people outside the UK even recognize them beyond “Ruby” and mistake Lily Allen for being the author of “Oh My God.” However, I do recommend checking out their first, second, third and latest album. They demonstrate that new music is far from crappy, it just isn’t necessarily played on the radio, as if anyone under 50 listens to it anymore.

May the Fourth be with you today!

yularen

My bigger plans to have the stats for the entire 727 Jump Brigade fell through via my procrastinating, parties and poor time-management skills. I did manage to make it to the Lego Store to get the annual Star Wars boon, this year it was Admiral Yularen. Being the big nerd I am I should’ve recognized the name, he’s only the key fleet officer in the Clone Wars series voiced by Tom Kane.

clonewars-kane-02

I had always wondered what became of him since we all know where Captain Tarkin was headed. Maybe he was killed in action near the end of the wars or he retired. Wrong on both counts. However, his fate may be in transition. Originally Yularen was retrofitted as this guy below in the exciting Death Star argument scene between Tarkin, Darth Vader, Admiral Motti and General Tagge.

WullfYularenTransition? When Disney took over, we all know they nullified all the stories written before the acquisition. Rumor has it the ol’ admiral remained faithful to the Old Republic and was a Rebel sympathizer, feeding intelligence whenever he could. Eventually he defected to the Rebel Alliance like General Madine did. This may play out in the current Rebels cartoon. We’ll see.

Other than that, it was pretty cool to see the latest The Force Awakens trailer in 3-D before the Avengers movie got rolling.

Dana Gould 2015

My belated finale to my biggest attendance at Austin’s Moontower Comedy Fest, a favorite comedian of mine who I’ve followed since the early Nineties. This year he was given the Stateside Theater to host his own show, or as Dana jokingly called it, the Paramount Annex. I also was pretty stoked to see him because the MC/Opener was Blaine Capatch, you may recognize him from Nerd Poker and At Midnight. On the former he’s currently the DM and with the latter, he writes/appears. The other opener was a nice lady and I can’t remember her name rudely. She didn’t kill but I think she has great potential as I told her at the after party.

Before I got into the show, I managed to be first in line with the general admission via badge line. The new friend Jackie I made at Dr. Katz was present again, knock on wood she follows up, I think I found a comedy buddy; Somara’s sense of humor is very different than mine. While we were waiting, I spotted Blaine and called his name. He was startled briefly but came over. I had a donation for Nerd Poker addressed to his old character Blackie Green from Impavidus Goldfrapp plus a toy wand for Ken Daly’s wizard Houg Denning. Blaine said it was going to be fun getting through the airport since it had different flickering light settings.

As for the show, I loved Blaine’s opening. I was more familiar with his rapid-fire style from Nerd Poker and couldn’t wait for his “commercial break” jokes. The best was his new spin on the “eating the world’s largest marshmallow” schtick. I need to watch some more of At Midnight to hear more gags.

Dana took the stage and had an hour of new material. Stuff about primates, how he discovered that his birth was nine months and two days exactly after the JFK assassination and other “dark” material. He isn’t for everybody. I think he’s in the same camp as mine, we’re not necessarily depressed or unhappy people, we just find humor in the absurd, uncomfortable and “sacred.” The latter covering Bruce Jenner’s sex change (I have no idea what her new first name is) and getting chewed out by a crying little boy with two daddies.

After the show I managed to catch up with Dana at the lounge in the Stephen F. Austin. I finally gave him the Star Trek special he played Dr. McCoy in. Annoyingly, the DVD of it was missing (I have it now) so he just has the videotape. He gladly provided a mailing address I need to act on. Then thanks to my friend Chip, I presented him the rare Alamo Drafthouse Mondo poster from their Planet of the Apes marathon from 2012. Last time I checked, the thing goes for almost a grand. Thankfully, he didn’t have this in his collection. Best of all, I took a chance on making my birthday pitch. I asked him if I covered his hotel and airfare, would he come to a private screening of Planet of the Apes (the good 1968 version) and just do 5-10 minutes before the movie of whatever he wanted to talk about. I know he’s a huge expert so nobody will be bored. Dana appeared receptive and said let’s discuss it further because his girlfriend has never been to Austin. Fingers crossed!

Happy 109th Birthday Grandma

Right there with José, the other big Taurus in my 46 years on Earth. I always recall that she did live a rather remarkable life alongside my grandfather. Whether or not Grandma realized it remains a mystery. She also did teach me some weird lessons in life. What they were I’ll have to get back to you about them.

Happy Birthday José, aka the Hoser

benderonjeep

He sent me this picture of mini-Bender getting run over by a Jeep. I guess he was trying to cross the street sober and now he’s stuck as a front-end ornament.

Wishing Hoser the best today. At least he gets the day off. Due to his recent interest in making craft beer, much to the ridicule of Budweiser, the King of American Swill, I think he probably has a birthday brew to share. (Put in many dependent clauses Steve?) He better save a bottle for me!

1995: Apple Beta begins

April is my official anniversary month of joining Apple but four years earlier, I finally broke through as a temp, I mean “contractor.”

I had failed to land the internship spot twice which turned out to be a fortunate matter, interns in AppleCare were eliminated the following year. I had also zero luck getting through via tech. Back then, the hiring leadership went by knowledge/ability and not potential, the latter variable is what I’m always interested in seeing in action.

The nice lady from Adia managed to land me a gig that didn’t rely so much on tech, Sales Support. These are the people who assist the customers after the sale has been made on the non-tech things: paperwork primarily. I was very lucky, I got a spot helping out a cool division and I think it’s what helped me finally move over to tech support in the Fall.

Learning the Apple culture was very intriguing. It took me over a week to stop dressing business casual as I had been doing at Towers; I can’t remember the last time I wore khakis to work and if I did it was probably as a part-time projectionist. All the people were pretty cool yet I felt sad for the lady I was covering for, she was terminally ill with cancer. I could tell she didn’t want to go on leave, working was a big part of her life. I only hope her passing was painless much like the days I trained with her.

Having a 40-hours/week job was a huge relief. The first four months of 1995 had been filled with disappointment. From the Chicago trip to interview at Loyola to the numerous near misses on a bill or rent. One thing I always did enjoy was getting a pair of cheap pizzas at the nearby Mr. Gattis, using them to keep warm while eating and watching the new, mediocre shows on WB. Now with a substantial raise of income, I was seriously enjoying life in Austin. Matters had turned a positive corner at Towers too. I didn’t need to quit neither, Doc was suddenly understaffed so I maintained the leasing department on the weekends. Working every day didn’t feel very harsh. A day with Towers earned me a meal plus I was still in my foolish twenties, I probably missed out on many evenings of good sleep.

When I did have time off, I enjoyed the hell out of it. My brother’s wedding in mid May, a Saturday at Hamilton Pool and the piece de resistance, my 27th birthday.

What’s hard to believe now was how I managed to do this without a car and on $8.50/hour. In Austin today, your residence would be a dumpster.

2005: Somara leaves for Phoenix

A very long and lonely Summer got rolling a decade ago. Technically, Somara headed out West a couple days before May began. I remember already missing her enormously as I tried to quietly weep in my cubicle the first Saturday without her being around. Nemo expressed his grief by pissing on the kitchen floor repeatedly.

The new cell phones were interesting. It was pretty cool being able to reach Somara at the Gold Bar or if I was at Kenny’s, Apple or some other hangout.

Somara did fly back around July to attend her graduation ceremony. I can’t remember who watched Wicca back in Phoenix. The other cats didn’t recognize Somara immediately.

I hope we never undertake such a heart-wrenching endeavor again. A little vacation apart to hang with certain friends is one thing, this was just a dumb matter I still blame myself over, thanks to my chickening out.

My Stars are out

The Stars and defending Calder Cup champs were eliminated in a painful sweep by the Rockford Icehogs who the surrogate for the insufferable Chicago Blackhawks. I’m bummed we won’t be raising any banners next Fall yet I guess my sense of financial relief makes me a fair-weathered fan in the eyes of some.

We’ll have our same seats next season and it will be interesting as the AHL will have a new Pacific Division with the relocation of five franchises to California:

  • San Jose Barracudas
  • Bakersfield Condors
  • Ontario Reign
  • San Diego Gulls (really a return of sorts)
  • Stockton Heat

In addition, the AHL returns to Winnipeg. Not sure if they’ll re-take their Moose name. Additional movement and affiliation changes are in the air too. Summer is going to be very interesting.

Who’s my pick for the Calder Cup match up? I’d say the smarter money is on the OKC Barons for the Western Conference. The Eastern is going to be a guess because we don’t see them often in Texas, so the Hershey Bears due to their dominance.
