Icepocalypse 2015 was a bust

Sure, sure, sure, all you people living up north had your fun at our expense over our overreaction to the freezing rain that proved to be negligible. However, AISD taking the lead to go with a delayed opening of noon was the wiser move given what happened last year; they went with a delayed opening of 10 AM only to cancel school altogether well after many people reported for work. I was in a similar boat then but the difference, the conditions were crummy.

As embarrassed as I was yesterday morning for sleeping in, we didn’t have to be at work until noon, I was still stoked at all signs of the previous evenings freezing rain had evaporated by 10 AM.

If the forecasts hold up, it seems Spring in Austin will be under way! Now we’ll see who has the “last laugh” when those friends are still shoveling around Easter weekend.

Welcome Wesley!

wesley

The new son of my co-worker and great guy all around since I was in training with him 14 years ago, Troy! Oh Wesley is a sweet little kid there. I think he’s trying to bend me to his will via the stare.

Kingsman: Worth Seeing

kingsmanAn odd risk taken by Hollywood because R-rated movies tend to fail financially but I guess the bean counters took a chance due to this being handled by the guy behind Kick Ass, Layer Cake and some other hyper-violent flicks. I liked it since it felt more along the lines of a modernized Our Man Flint or the Matt Helm movies; you could even stretch it to being a more violent, more English version of Austin Powers.

Colin Firth gets to have fun playing a bad-ass operative for a non-affiliated secret agency (aka, not part of MI-6) that has saved the world numerous times. Samuel L. Jackson finally gets the villain role which doesn’t suck, we’d all like to forget The Spirit, oh wait, we did alongside Frank Miller’s right-wing rubbish. It was also cool to see Mark Strong as a good guy (he’s often villains) and Michael Caine (a nod to his Harry Palmer trilogy).

The parts I find funny are what a “thug” in the UK allegedly looks like today. It’s reminiscent of the old Bill Hicks’ jokes. In America no one who’s dangerous buttons their shirt up to the collar unless they’re wearing a tie. We’d also die laughing if we were threatened by a guy called Poodle.

Anyway, I enjoyed Kingsman over many other films in its genre for several reasons. The hero’s journey isn’t a rushed montage, “Eggsy” trains over weeks and we see the various stages. The female rival trainee Roxy doesn’t become his love interest, she’s an equally competent candidate who pulls through in the clutch. Lastly, it was great to see Mark Hamill get a guest spot in a big movie, I see him more on TV or cartoons.

Due to the violence and dark humor, I don’t recommend this for the prudish or politically correct. Kingsman is a very “English” movie in its worldview.

Alamo Extras: We were under the wire so we only caught an Action Jackson commercial, Mego’s first attempt to take on Hasbro’s GI Joe; a hilarious Funny or Die bit blaming Samuel L Jackson for bad behavior.

This month’s header is a tribute to Leonard Nimoy

I decided to go with a header like I’ve done for Superman, Batman, 1989 and William Shatner. Not necessarily as a tribute to his passing but March 26 would’ve been his 84th birthday.

It’s nice to see all the outpouring of sorrow and celebration for him, namely the President, numerous scientists he inspired, authors, comedians and even the fair-weathered fan.

I went with a similar collection of roles he was known for as I did with Shatner. We have a little Seventies “cheese” as he plays Paris doing something undercover in Mission:Impossible, the iconic Mr. Spock, one of his many appearances in the Groenig-verse as himself parodying the In Search Of…show and like others of his generation, a guest spot on Gunsmoke.

Happy Birthday Nicolas

The oldest remaining young person I know in the Chicago area celebrates turning the big 1-5 today. Here’s hoping he has a good time despite the cold weather.

We’re all working on a mini-trip for him to visit us in Austin this Summer.

A belated hooray for Net Neutrality

Last Thursday was a surprising victory for those of us who live in the Real World. The FCC finally did its job after being a rubber-stamp organization for 34 years. I’m most surprised that Chairman and former corporate prostitute Tom Wheeler pushed it through. I figured he was Michael Powell Lite.

Of course there will be lawsuits, the thing Corporations said are bad except when they file them to protect their fiefdoms. Verizon demonstrated its immaturity, complaining via Morse code. Seemed fitting, AT&T (my mediocre ISP), Comcast, Time Warner and Verizon charge ridiculous prices for Eighties technology. Then will come the Libertarian-Republican-Corporate bullshit. The usual, it’s interference, it’s more regulation, blah blah blah. They only believe in toll roads as the solution to everything. Nevermind that oddly average Internet speed is higher in DC than most of the nation. Coincidence? The Republicans and DINOs haven’t been a bribe they didn’t like neither. Currently, I’m reading Merchants of Doubt which has given a preview of the obfuscation campaign the Republicans and their allies will employ. Mostly a rehashing of what they have done for Big Tobacco, climate change, winning a nuclear war and acid rain.

Next up. Finding a way to ditch AT&T who jacked my monthly bill $6/month or lowering it. With the site moving off the server at home, there’s less need for a static IP now.

Rest in Peace Leonard Nimoy

mrspockThe man who really made Mr. Spock a feasible, memorable and well-loved character has passed away. Leonard Nimoy did such a great job that it made the character’s death at the end of Star Trek II a pop culture touchstone.

However, I always knew there was more to him. After Star Trek, I remembered him as an operative in the latter half of Mission:Impossible when I was a kid, I think he replaced Martin Landau. He was this cool Turkish advisor to Kublai Khan in a Marco Polo miniseries I loved. There was his appearance in the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers to aid my nightmares.

My adulthood is when Leonard took off doing funny stuff as himself twice on The Simpsons and again on Futurama. He was a bright spot in the rather uneven Atlantis cartoon from Disney. As much as I hate the JJ Abrams movies, the car plug Leonard did with Zachary Quinto is amusing.

I’m bummed I never got any facetime with him as I did at the fan conventions. The closest I ever got was his autograph on a special photo he obliged to those who bought the William Shatner VIP pass in 2013. I can always imagine William going to Leonard’s house, asking if he could help out.

Farewell Mr. Nimoy. Thank you for fleshing out the first real breakout character in Sci-Fi television. We are all going to miss you yet I’m grateful for the years of joy you gave me.

Plant Nanny

plantnannyMy doctor is often reminding me to drink more water, namely to fight my allergies and congestion. So Somara introduced me to this little game. Every time I drink a unit of water, often 500 ml, the plant receives water too. The daily total isn’t arbitrary, you enter your weight for the software to calculate. Currently I’m supposed consumed 4.3 liters/day. Ugh. I definitely need to lose weight to get it closer to 4 liters or lower. I think the app should come with a catheter too. Eventually I figure my bladder will get accustomed to drinking more.

Darth Vader #1; main selling point is its ties to Marvel Star Wars

darthvader1Marvel’s second Star Wars title focuses on the movie’s original villain and his activities after the Death Star’s destruction. Unlike most comics in which the characters’ story rarely overlaps into another title; e.g. Batman events are rarely mention in say Justice League unless there’s a crossover. Darth Vader is intertwined with what went down in Star Wars #1-3, no serious spoilers despite #3 not being released yet. As my comic store’s podcast pointed out, Vader is almost the Empire’s perspective on the same things happening in Star Wars.

I found the artwork to be better too. The nice touch is Vader’s visit to Jabba the Hutt. It follows the same path as Luke’s from Return of the Jedi but this is Darth Vader before he became a crybaby in the prequels, corpses follow in his wake. There’s also more tension between him and the Emperor. With the loss of the Death Star, the Emperor fears that the Empire he crafted is vulnerable. He’s probably right, a significant portion of his military leadership and experienced forces perished while his Sith apprentice survived. Ergo, Vader is “demoted” to negotiating for resources while the Imperial fleet scrambles to maintain order. For uber-Star Wars geeks, you’ll get a couple cool surprises on who remains in the Empire’s inner circle.

Again, I loved the digital option. I now have it on my iPad and the physical copy has gone to a good home, another fan.

Marquette Day 2015

marquetteday2015Villanova pretty much had the game under control after five minutes, or at least it’s when I recall tuning out. I mainly attend these things just to see how many of us exist around here. Most Texans only recall my alma mater when you mentioned either Al Maguire or their 1977 NCAA victory.

It’s a fairly diverse crowd. Most are recent graduates but there’s a couple who attended in the Fifties and then moved down here, so they’ve had a front-row see to the Houstonization. Another guy was pretty fresh out of Milwaukee, has a job working on the budget for the legislature. I could tell in his eyes and defense of “both sides do it,” he probably campaigned for Walker, someone who dropped out.

My favorite part was meeting at the Tavern. I haven’t been there in over a decade. It’s this restaurant/bar that “recycled” a house from when Austin’s northern border probably didn’t go very far past the University. I’m amazed it has endured. Everything else has been taxed to death to make room for more One Percenter housing.

We’re going to have another little get-together in two weeks at one guy’s house to meet some teenagers who were accepted. Am I going to convince them to attend or bail? No. I’m going to point out the upside v. downside to it. Hmmm, an incoming freshman now pays $18,000/semester and $5500/semester for McCormick, ouch. Let’s compare it to UT if you’re a resident…$5000/semester and housing (good luck finding any) is upside down at $11,000/year. As “pricey” as Marquette is plus the terrible Milwaukee weather, it might be a better fit for some candidates. UT is a great school in its own right but it operates more like a factory with an bureaucracy unconcerned about a student’s well-being (need for tutoring, seeing a professor, etc.) since they know there’s another four or five people waiting to take your spot. I do not envy these young people on how the hell they’re going to pay for it. I thought my final debt of $14K would kill me.

I look forward to meeting these people again. They seem very nice and it’s nice to talk about the food we miss. According to Annette, the current coordinator, Austin will be getting a Gino’s East. Sweet. We have Culver’s. We have Steak n’ Shake. We have Carl’s Jr., aka Hardee’s in the Midwest. We AHL-level hockey (like Milwaukee and Chicago). Vegas has a White Castle, them coming here is inevitable. So much for losing weight.

1980: The Miracle on Ice

miracle2015Today is the 35th anniversary of the US’s victory over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Games. Contrary to popular belief, it didn’t result in a gold medal, these guys still had to defeat Finland because the medal round was some weird round robin thing.

Even if you don’t care about sports, politics or hockey, this achievement remains important to me since it proved that teamwork, grit and a solid esprit de corps (instilled by Herb Brooks) could finally defeat what was the greatest hockey team on the planet. The West, especially America, continues to believe in the superstar bullshit: the Cult of Jordan, Big Baby LeBron, Kobe “Ego” Bryant, A-Rod the A-Hole, Johnny “Rapist” Football, etc. It also overflows how other matters are treated in the SCLM…CEOs, politicians and entertainers. Beyonce has more writers for here forgettable music than Jon Stewart’s Daily Show staff yet many go nuts over her shaking her butt.

Oh well, I’m going to savor the moment. Thankfully, only two participants have passed away in 35 years, a rather good stroke of luck. And I’m going to continue being a so-called Communist for my strategy to solve problems while I admire my Mike “Rizzo” Eurizone-autographed puck.

This is why I cannot work from home

I was confused about why this office had so many cats around and then realized these people run a litter box company. So they’re really testing the hell out of the product because a dozen cats can create a biohazard in a few hours.
