Pinball…ahh! Savior of the Universe!

flashgordonpinballPinballz finally brought in one of the coolest looking machines from a movie I have often loved! Alamo Drafthouse once called it the new Wizard of Oz for today’s homosexual generation. Probably due to the colors and garish fashion. Who cares! Flash Gordon was a flop at the box office but it has lived on a favorite movie by how it turned the old Buster Crabbe serials 90 degrees into what I imagine they wanted to do in the Thirties if they had the money and technology.

As a pinball machine, Flash Gordon is a rarity. A good machine belonging to a great franchise. Usually you rarely get both. Twister? Dumb film, great game. Star Wars the 1997 re-issue, despite Greedo shooting first, still awesome movies; the machine, stingy and annoying.

My only wish for the game? It’s a bummer that the technology for speech on electronics was very limited in 1980. Having several Queen tracks and other catchphrases from the movie would’ve been great!

Tesla skipped Texas despite Gov. Goodhair’s whoring

Last week, Nevada landed the so-called Tesla Gigafactory to produce batteries after Elon Musk successfully played multiple states off each other to subsidize his ego. Texas probably lost out due to the power of its car dealerships, they have a powerful lobby with The Laboratory for Bad Ideas, aka the state legislature. For those who didn’t know, it’s against the law to sell new cars directly to customers as Tesla does.

Ergo the new jerbs go to a state which favors the mindset of the Cyberselfish Libertarian crowd that conveniently forgets how their obscene fortunes came at the expense of taxpayer subsidies. The difference between the Cyberselfish and the Libertarian Apologists (writers for the Economist and Cato Institute purists) are their stances on corporate welfare…I mean, incentive packages. Nevada is now on the hook for what may be as much as $3 billion meaning they ponied up $500,ooo a jerb. I guess I better lose big at the table games during my upcoming Vegas vacation.

The day when Americans finally realized they’re getting screwed will never come. It’s hard to convince certain factions…ahem! Teabaggers!…how we’re one nation, not 50. In another recent example, Texas poached a slew of Toyota jobs from California, New York and Kentucky. Goodhair claimed he “created” several thousand jerbs. For those of us who earned better than a D at Math knew what bullshit his claim was. No Goodhair, you bribed Toyota to move them from several places, not created plus they will likely pay less as the car manufacturer tells the survivors how much “lower” the cost of living is in Dallas and Texans receive a $10 million bill which could’ve gone toward schools or infrastructure.

Back to cool 2014!

backtocool14Doing my part to help others look their best when they head back to class. We have the older lady wearing Batgirl and her little sister in a TMNT tent because I’m terrible at picking out the right size for small children.

Thirteen years at our house!

My Austin record keeps getting longer and longer! After my Gypsy upbringing throughout the first three decades of living on Earth, it is a relief to come home to a place that’s practically mine…once the mortgage is paid off.

Some days the house can feel like an albatross around one’s neck but then you compare it to the alternative, renting. I made the right decision especially as Austin’s rents have been going through the figurative roofs. The property taxes are expected to climb a tad. Residing in unincorporated Pflugerville has the advantage now, where we are isn’t very desirable. I give it another decade.

Thanks to any of you who have visited my humble abode. I hope by this time next year, we’ve had more guests.

Everything’s bigger in Texas…

spiderhouse…including the spiders who set up a base camp next to your house!

The zigzag pattern at the base is allegedly there to warn off birds from flying through but entomologists are still debating this.

Rest in Peace Cally

cally1My good friend Jeremy’s cat passed away recently. Due to complications from renal failure and hyperthyroidism (something Miette suffers from now), Cally had to be euthanized. She did have a good run of 17 years (85 for a human) and was Jeremy’s main pet in all the years I’ve known him.

She thinks she's invisible to us dumb humans.

She thinks she’s invisible to us dumb humans.

I got to know Cally over the years. She was usually rather skittish around those she didn’t know but the years, I think I gained her trust. After the Jeremy and Tina divorced, Cally was noticeably more social with me. No more running away when I walked into the house and Cally liked being petted while I visited her on the tower.

Unlike my cats, Cally got along with Kristin’s duo Porkchop and Cookie well; I never saw any fights or cheap shots when they walked by each other. I’m confident she missed her old buddy Pixel (Tina’s cat) too.

Cally’s decline must’ve been pretty quick. I had seen her over the last year and she seemed rather normal. Vying for lap time against Cookie while I was attempting to babysit Ben. I’m way better with cats than infants!

I will miss the little girl. There’s something about brown tabbies which makes them extra special to me. They’re fiercely all cat, domineering yet do silly things in private and incredibly loyal to their humans. Cally was no Molly but I’m sure they had more in common than they’d admit.

Cally's favorite sleeping position.

Cally’s favorite sleeping position.

One extra special thing about Cally was her 15 minutes of Internet fame. A few years ago, she had surgery and wouldn’t stop grooming the area that needed to heal. The cone wasn’t entirely effective. Frustrated, Tina bought a baby onesie, cut the bottom out so Cally would keep using the litter box (plus the tail) and stuffed the cat into it. The expression on Cally’s face was what made the photo priceless. To this day, if you go to Google and type in the phrase “cat in pajamas,” you’ll see Cally turns up in the top 10. Don’t believe me, try it. You’ll know which picture. It’s the brown tabby with a cone around her neck and the rather peeved look.

Glad this week (the last full one of August 2014)…is over!

It wasn’t all that bad, just exhausting. Way back on the previous Friday I received the tap to cover for a team manager who was out ill. He had been really sick so there was a huge workload to catch up on and close because the month’s end was coming.

I think I did quite well too. I completed a series of meetings with all the representatives, normally they’re my peers. Finished the quota of call evaluations needed to meet the monthly goal. Attended some other functions. Most importantly, I didn’t drop over dead. It ate into my exercising in the morning and the sleep I often need. Not a bad third attempt at being the acting team manager.

Other things besides sleep and exercise were neglected. Chores were a big one, I have a ton of laundry to do before we leave for Vegas next week. Book reading was another. Favorite hobbies like D&D and pinball bit the dust. The stream is behind. Obviously, updates to the site was the biggie.

Well, now comes another tsunami of pictures, stories and other getting schedule in! Especially all the overdue ones.

Pizza Hut Japan has cat-spokesmen

The land of cute has a much more interesting ad campaign for a rather overpriced brand. What little I know about Japanese pizza though, I’m confident even their Pizza Hut puts rather gross things on their pies: mayonnaise, crab legs (not the meat, the whole leg still in the shell) and corn.

Happy Birthday Steve!

My friend and charter fan-club member celebrates today. Well, I celebrate in my own way. I’m confident Steve has his own plans with Chance (his son) and someone special (I rudely forget her name, d’oh!).

We in Austin send him virtual good wishes and the card is in the mail, sorry it’s late dude!
