Happy RPG Day (yesterday)

rpgdie2014Following the leads of Record Store Day (April) and Free Comic Book Day (May), June has Free RPG (role-playing/roleplaying game) Day. Every year, various publishers print “free” material for the numerous stores to give out in the hopes it will gain new fans. I put quotes around the word free because I discovered that the stores who participate pay for the random bundles. I think they receive a substantial discount and the companies take a small loss but it isn’t as high as the stores.

This year I remembered to show up early since the Pathfinder goodie often runs out first. It wasn’t bad for a free adventure, the focus was on their current Adventure Path in the pseudo-Egyptian nation with the pre-made PCs coming from their upcoming supplement debuting more character classes nobody needs. I also went with the die in the picture. It looked pretty cool.

Other stuff? Fudge dice, the Valiant (Comics) RPG, a space opera-like game, a dungeon-crawl adventure from Goodman and a dual-flip-side Shadowrun/BattleTech adventure. Wizards of the Coast was absent. They’re probably too busy prepping their upcoming Fifth Edition of D&D, aka the Too-Little/Too-Late revision.

To show my support for my store, I bought a couple other things to help offset the costs and skepticism over this retail holiday. I think it’s great to raise awareness of the hobby, enticing new players is the lifeblood of everything and it’s very hard in an era filled with video games/computer systems that can “do it better.” Maybe the vendors should look into finding volunteer DM/GMs to run the stuff, demonstrate to kids the difference between electronic button-mashing versus tabletop, they’re both awesome and sometimes analog is superior. Hipsters keep professing this with vinyl, I’m just saying the same with D&D.

STARS WIN THE CALDER CUP

tex_cup140617

I know this was achieved Tuesday evening way up in St. John’s but it has been a crazy week and I wanted to throw in the highlights of the celebration from Thursday night. It would’ve been cool if they won it at home. This was not meant to be. The LA Kings set the trend by winning in five, followed by the Spurs doing the same. My Stars couldn’t let this challenge go by.

Some people may pooh pooh my team’s accomplishments due to them being a development or minor-league organization. OK, sure, you have a point but Austin is never going to have a major franchise in any of the four big commercial sports (football, baseball, basketball or hockey, soccer? Who cares!) since UT is the 800-pound gorilla. Plus the jerk owner of the Dallas Cowboys will always keep out any NFL team from relocating in what he considers his backyard.

Back to the joy!

The Stars ended a perfect season by winning the coveted trophy. It was a struggle to keep going. Often the number one team chokes in the playoffs (see the St. Louis Blues). I would say the Stars almost did this against the Marlies. Thankfully they turned it around in game seven with six unanswered goals after being down 2-0.

In addition to being the champs, Travis Morin won Playoff MVP to coincide with this year’s AHL MVP. At the rally there was a ton of trophies on the table. The Stars practically monopolized the league in goodies.

You can see the fun, silliness and cheers via this link. My favorite was when Mike Hedden got his turn to speak, he chose to just pour his beer into the Cup and drink from it before sitting back down. I never gave Cristopher Nilstorp’s penalty minutes much thought neither, he’s the team’s leader for goalies. He’s a far cry from Ed Belfour so don’t get your hopes up.

Now comes the sad news which often follows whenever a team wins or loses especially with development teams. Our coach Willie Desjardins wasn’t present because he was interviewing for the vacancy in Vancouver which you know he landed. GM Scott White will be looking for a replacement, again. Contracts will be ending for many by July 1. Mike Hedden already planned ahead, he’s off to the KHL. As crucial as he was to our success, Mike has too many games under his belt and we have a surplus of vets (the AHL only allows four people with 240-plus pro games to play each night, goalies are exempt alongside NHLers sent down for conditioning). I think Nilstorp has a good shot at the backup slot in Dallas next season and Aaron Rome was bought out to free up cap space, this means we will lose a defenseman, smart money is on Patrik Nemeth. Others will leave to for opportunities to land NHL slots or go to Europe. We’ll see how much of the core will remain intact in 10 weeks.

I will be comforted when we raise our new banners to the rafters to join the two we have.

Closing out, here’s how far my playoff beard progressed!

Contrary to my expression, I'm not mad, just sweaty from exercise.

This is how much "hair" my beard was after I trimmed it.

The D&D version of Myers Briggs personalities

Lately I’ve been learning all about that Myers Briggs jazz regarding communication styles and how they relate to the different personalities around the world. It was part of some recent training I took in April.

Then it got me reminiscing over something Lester photocopied and shared around the GDW offices. I thought it was written by the prolific/opinionated Greg Porter but turns out, I was wrong. The author never did anything I ever heard of again. Sadly, he also passed away.

The funnier part regarding his article was how a certain inept co-worker bought into the argument too much. He latched on to it as if it were brought down from Mt. Olympus. I read it too with some trepidation (I was somewhat more stubborn in the early Nineties). My takeaway was, “amusing, mostly true with the war and power gamers.” The writer articulated into words many things I felt, it just wasn’t the whole picture, more like some quick stereotypes and generalizations. I do keep its core wisdom in mind.

Thankfully Lester was an excellent teacher, he tempered it with his number-one rule, “if the people playing the game are having a good time, then they’re playing it correctly.”

An interesting map app for iOS and Android

Lester sent me a link for this Kickstarter project to create/utilize maps on tablet-based systems. It certainly seems interesting. Would it be useful? For me that’s the nagging question. I enjoy my iPad but authoring a map for a game of D&D feels like it would be a nightmare, I have fat fingers and the I find a mouse to be more precise. The project people did answer me quickly saying I could make my own maps and counters. Another bone of contention came from my friend Jeremy, he has the most experience I know on developing software. He found their $75K goal rather unrealistic…it’s too little. This should be something in the six-digit range which may explain why the bigger fish of gaming are not involved.

I’m going to mull it over for a few days. I found their movie rather comical because I have yet to meet a female DM who was also a part-time model. I’m sure these ladies exist but just super, super rare. Like a meth addict who still has all of his teeth.

Congrats Spurs! Suck it LeBron and Miami!

Herb Brooks would’ve been proud since the Spurs took the smarter route on building a team that worked together, getting their re-match against the superstar model, depriving of them its three-peat. While the Heat relied heavily on James, Wade and Bosh to carry the Heat through, the Spurs developed the whole bench so when Ginobili, Duncan and Parker need to rest, the team can continue to kick ass.

I sense an upcoming trend that should bear out for my Stars. Think about it.

  1. LA Kings win Friday, they’re silver and black, 4-1.
  2. Spurs win Sunday, they’re silver and black, 4-1.
  3. Stars are up 2-1 but there’s only a two-letter difference between the words and they’re both Central Texas teams.

I’m just being silly. There’s no conspiracy or correlation. It’s just nice to see the two non-douchebag teams winning in two major sports. Well, the Kings are partially because of their city’s reputation as a shallow place as Bill Hicks used to call it.

RIP Casey Kasem

caseykasem

Casey had been ill for a while so I figured it was only a matter of time before the venerable radio voice would pass away. I hope he had a peaceful ending since the crapstorm with him family is just beginning.

He was definitely a presence during my childhood doing cartoon voices, the big three being Robin on The Superfriends, Alex Cabot III on Josie and the Pussycats (I think he was the band’s manager) and obviously his iconic Norville “Shaggy” Rogers on Scooby-Doo until Matthew Lilliard took over. His Alex in Battle of the Planets (the US version of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman) was more obscure.

When I got older, I became more familiar with Casey hosting his Top 40 show on WCVS in Springfield. The TV version was a decent surrogate until we moved to Houston where they had MTV.

Then he became the “enemy” during my high school/college years. The object of ridicule for his corny dedications, unhip music choices and predictable delivery style. On WMUR, one the station’s best student DJs Mike “Bax” Baxendale did a hilarious station ID poking fun at all three. I have a digital copy I need to post but I would prefer to have Bax’s permission, he’s a real morning host out East. I will describe it below:

The music underneath is The Lords of the New Church covering “Like a Virgin,” Casey chimes in a couple seconds saying “I’m Casey Kasem and when I’m not counting down the hits for millions of 14-year-old girls, I listen to WMUR.”

As with all good impersonations, Bax didn’t sound like Casey, he just conveyed the cadence and mindset we associated with the host.

Anyway, I’m confident Casey laughed all the way to the bank and couldn’t have cared less about the ire of teens/young adults. He did know, many of these same critics would’ve given their front teeth for an opportunity meet him. I remember a guest to an upper division communications class talking about a radio convention which had a brunch with Casey. It often sold out quickly.

Lastly, I’m glad he had a successful, prosperous and ubiquitous career. He was living proof that someone of Arabic-decent (Lebanese and a Muslim) was just as American people from other backgrounds.

Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!

hercscoreMy kick-ass high score on the biggest pinball machine ever built, give or take the fact I don’t feel like researching any further. It’s an awesome machine since it uses a cue ball and has big wooden flippers. Hercules scale makes me appear to be a 12-year-old kid…with a graying beard. The score doesn’t appear impressive by today’s standards but it was a rare Atari machine built in the late Seventies when getting over a million points wasn’t common.

Joker 3 in honor of Batman’s 75th

This pair was on clearance at Journeys. My guess is they’re clearing space for the next round of DC characters, JLA mainstays again. These are my favorite Jokers because they seem to follow the Marshall Rogers style. I also love the laughter surrounding the sole.

Congrats to the Kings, a kicking to the Flyers’ management

I caught the last hour of the Kings’ victory over the Rangers, giving the LA team their second Cup in three years and existence. It was quite a goal too. Shot from Carter, rebounded back in by Martinez. Textbook play.

Now I think about how irked I am at GMs Bobby Clarke and Paul Holmgren for trading away Conn Smythe winner Justin Williams to the ‘Canes, Mike Richards to the Kings and Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets. The last player was allegedly for having an affair with a teammate’s wife, ergo, the Flyers ditched him for moral reasons.  Really? Pro athletes acting like philandering d-bags? Firstly, what’s new? Secondly, what and where exactly was the teammate if not with his own wife?

Well I’m glad the Kings pulled through since I dislike most things about New York that isn’t the city’s food, Broadway shows and occasionally its paper of record.

With a black and silver team winning the Cup, I’d say the Spurs are a cinch tomorrow evening against the Miami Floppers. Afterwards the Central Texas vibe will be passed on to my Stars in the long run over the Icecaps.

It’s about half right

I’m getting my running back on track but now I need to work on eating much, much less since I’m pushing back into Jose’s Wedding Weight…that’s my weight, not his.

Go Spurs! I mean Stars!

starsvicecaps

Hmmm, the only difference between these teams are two letters! If they both win, Central Texas will be the champs in a  couple sports.

Last night the Spurs beat Captain Flopper and this evening the Stars beat the Icecaps (or as an announcer on KUT misread, Whitecaps) in overtime. Should my team lose the next two games in St. John’s, at least they’ll come back to Austin for one more game.

RIP Rik Mayall

It was sad to hear about the passing of Rik. He wasn’t well known in America and I think Drop Dead Fred didn’t help. However, if you watched MTV in the mid-Eighties when their music-video format was losing steam, you probably saw the US debut of The Young Ones. I haven’t seen an episode in a while so I can’t say how well the show has held up over the years. During the initial showings in 1985, I did find it funny, even funnier when I got older since Rik’s character was rather universal for those attending college; the loud-mouth Lefty with little talent and whose beliefs falter when the rubber hits the road.

Rik’s appearances in the Black Adder series’ were hilarious, namely the WWI flying ace. I think the humor was doubly funny due to Rik being the character who got the girls after being the butt of jokes in The Young Ones.

Besides Fred, you may recognize his brief appearance in the American comedy-horror flick, American Werewolf in London. He was pub patron before the gruesome event that made David Naughton a monster.

Happy eighth anniversary E & K, belatedly

The “younger” Lowrys celebrated eight years of marriage yesterday. I remembered as I got a quick message in to Ethan but I lacked any time to remind you all here. Work was non-stop and then I had to rush north to Reaganstan (aka Cedar Park) to see my team lose game two.

The wedding gift choices bite. Who came up with this junk? Bronze? Pottery? Great if you live in Ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia. The old Geek list drew up snake eyes…Web links, really? “Hey dear, happy anniversary, I got you the URL for an aggregate site because you’re too dumb to find one yourself.”

Here’s a more modern option. Lace and linens. Ugh. Tablecloths and bedsheets. Lame. These choices are right up there with getting socks for Christmas. I am glad the world has tuned out some parts of the Miss Manners world since necessities are not a gift amongst immediate family members. A stranger, a family friend or a distant relative, sure; “Hey, thanks for the cool blanket I’ll use for my dorm bedroom Aunt Sam!”

I do hope they come to visit with their trio of fun little girls. We can have a nice dinner, make them laugh before they become jaded teens.

Meanwhile, K & E, be ready for a barrage of gift cards from Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Older cat advice, how I wish mine were so nice

As much as I would love to have a kitten, I tend to adopt adults because they deserve a home too. It’s probably why they all have their own agendas. Nemo was the closest to a kitten which I rudely forgot. Isis often behaves like a kitten when she goes to town on her tail. I think this story was more applicable to the cats I sit for, back when Shadow was around he gave the skinny to Tiki, Angel and Jack.
