Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rental

spiderman2

Congratulations to the two hacks (Orci and Kurtzman) who helped JJ Abrams crap all over Star Trek! They managed to make same error faster with the Amazing Spider-Man franchise by recreating the exact same gripe I had with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films…too many villains/plot lines. I can’t wait for Sony to reboot again.

If this incarnation were an ongoing TV series, what happened would work better. Have the multiple stories come together at different paces and resolve in separate episodes, as it should be with episodic television. Instead ASM2 is a shotgun of too much in the face: the Oscorp conspiracy involving Peter Parker’s parents, Electro, the Rhino (an under-utilized Paul Giamatti), the Green Goblin and Gwen Stacy. It culminates in overload and disappointment.

There were some positive elements so this review isn’t a total dump on Spidey. I think Jamie Foxx did a great job as Electro. An explanation on why Spider-Man can take an excessive amount of damage made sense plus why Oscorp did all that research involving spiders. Stan the Man’s traditional cameo.

However, I just don’t like Andrew Garfield as the lead character. He and Emma Stone have no chemistry. He isn’t as plausible as Toby Maguire in the role neither. Garfield just wanders around, moping and pondering. Rather two-dimensional. Peter and Harry Osborn’s long-term friendship is another glaring hole. After being away in boarding school, etc. for a decade they pick up where they left off…weak.

Save your money. Wait until Netflix or just re-watch Raimi’s movies. I should’ve figured it was going to be mediocre based upon the theater being less than half full when I went on opening weekend.

Alamo Extras: The old Electric Company bits with Spider-Man helping out; the Ramones music video from the Saturday Morning Cartoon album; the late Sixties Bashki cartoons; the live-action Spider-Man TV show from the Seventies; a Hot Wheels Ad; Spider-Man doing a PSA for voting in 1992; Spider-Man’s PSA for fitness; Mego toy commercials; clips from Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends; a foreign-language version of Bashki theme (Spanish I think); Spider-Man rapping to smaller version of himself; what do the Japanese and Turkish versions of Spider-Man look like; a funny movie of him grocery shopping; a gag with a Queen song and Bad Lip Reading of the previous movie.

It ain’t over until the Fat Elvis sings

fatelvisAppearing daily at one of the less attractive casinos. Hoser said Harrah’s but I could’ve sworn it was the Flamingo.

Mock him as we may yet I’m sure he laughs all the way to the bank.

Summer of 1983: Wargames

wargamesSeems Alamo hasn’t had as much luck with repeating the success of The Summer of 1982 since the choices for 1983 have been rather slim and sadly they’re not being screened closer to their release dates. Only the programming people could answer this. I definitely need to sit down, make a list with several trusted personal experts, hold our reunion with Blu-Rays and a big-ass TV.

The only one I managed to swing was this, the other selections were OK and Return of the Jedi was a Hail Mary (I think I had another obligation). A staffer did explain how Alamo pulled it off; they knew someone with a personal print because Lucas had them rounded up years ago.

So Wargames has a personal connection to me and not in a good way. I didn’t see it in theaters, 1983 was the turbulent Summer but I caught it on cable a year later which would put this overdue review closer to my actual viewing 30 years earlier.

Oh…the connection.

Unfortunately, I saw The Day After on ABC in the Fall of 1983. This resulted in recurring nightmares of nuclear extinction until college. Younger people may snicker yet they’re lucky to be ignorant of St. Reagan’s saber rattling at the Soviet Union. The so-called “Great Communicator” pushed us closer to annihilation than JFK with his actions: the invasion of Grenada, hostile rhetoric (calling the USSR “The Evil Empire” in speeches, never mind America’s crimes) and a Korean airline was shot down by Soviet fighters (rumors still abound on why the pilots erred). Wargames‘ opening scene was the most terrifying when you put into the context I just gave.

Does Wargames still hold up today? As a by-the-numbers Thriller, sure. As a time-capsule on what Hollywood thought was youth culture by casting two actors in their early twenties as high school kids? Of course not, it’s standard show-biz myopia. I think the setting of Seattle is humorous, a foretelling of how the city would become a computer powerhouse in a decade through Microsoft. The other element it nails would be the general ignorance the majority had of computers. It’s incredibly eye-rolling fare given what is known. Thanks to my father’s IT career since the late Seventies, he couldn’t keep his fact-checking to himself over how David’s back-door discovery was utter bullshit…the government connection would only allow a set number of attempts and then cut off further access from David’s phone number. Given WOPR was likely a mainframe, the Air Force would notice something amiss in the logs. Dad’s mythbusting gave me some comfort over accidents caused by hackers, he just couldn’t do much about St. Reagan’s warmongering.

The “high-tech” in David’s bedroom does give me a chuckle. All the gear, the monochrome display, the fictional voice accessory (didn’t feasibly exist in his parents’  price range) and how spiffy a (likely) 600 baud modem was!

1983 (14-year-0ld me): B. I never cared for scary movies yet I did enjoy the other elements, namely the cast: Dabney Coleman, Eddie Deezen and Barry Corbin. Wargames has some Sci-Fi elements I loved at that age.

2013: C. Despite how dated it looks, which is something I love when reminiscing older films, Wargames has failed to hold up plot wise. Not just with the expanded knowledge I have of computers and the military double, triple and quadrupling its status, there’s too many McGuffins happening to advance the story along with a preachy ending coming from a borderline AI.

Back from Vegas ’14: There and back again…

Our pockets are inside out because we "lost" all our money. As the locals say, we're showing the elephant.

The Tres Amigos with their pockets inside out because we “lost” all our money. The locals call this “showing the elephant.”

I’m ripping off part one of The Hobbit for this title because I plan to be in Las Vegas again  in the Fall with my wife. As much as I love hanging with my friends, I can’t complete a true Vegas Hat Trick unless I plan on getting divorced.

Anyway, my quick vacation to Sin City with José and his buddy José is done. For the sake of clarification, the one I’ve known for 25 years is Hoser, the other by his last name Cuervo…yes, his parents named him after tequila unknowingly, they’re Colombian, not Mexican. I think the crux for the trip was to celebrate Hoser’s 45th birthday. He hasn’t been there since his 40th. I needed a stag trip too. Somara will have a mini-vacation near the end of May when her evil sister visits from Phoenix.

It was a pretty cool trip. I had to let Hoser run the agenda despite all the cool things I know how to find. Again, I will be back in months. These poor guys? Who knows? Cuervo had never been here. He was in good hands.

We all flew in last Sunday. Worst. Flight. To Vegas. Ever. Thanks to el Niño, our planes were buffeting from the last hour to the landing. I also refused to pay Southwest’s One Percenter tax they impose for a better boarding pass and got stuck sitting in the rear, hence I felt the shaking more than the center area, where I prefer to be. Once we landed, I was stoked to be on the ground. My plane from Austin only had a 30-minute head start so I killed time with the free Wi-Fi, something Austin needs to frickin’ adopt. The Dallas faction arrived, we picked up the car, checked in, and proceeded to eat. I think we all needed a drink after the turbulence.

My room at the MGM Grand was alright. I had it to myself due to our fourth attendee having to bail (Glenn). I quickly remembered why I hate the hotels throughout the experience too. No Wi-Fi. The minibar fridge was an anti-white noise generator. Sucky view from the window. No music to play easily (I love music). Watching TV is a minor chore (gotta’ avoid accidentally selecting a pay-per-view movie like the dull Tom Clancy thriller). And getting around the casino to your room or a Starbucks makes Theseus’ battle against the Minotaur seem easier. In the end, MGM Grand added insult to injury at checkout with an $84 “resort fee” my Southwest package didn’t incorporate. Small wonder why their local economy tanked in 2007-8.

Putting aside the MGM Grand’s bullshit, I had a great time.

We drank (frequently). We ate (too much). We gambled, well, I did most of it because I’m not afraid of losing. We did a slug of walking, so much for the rental car. Took in a couple sights (or is it sites?).

Saw the Neon Museum for the first time. I will take Somara next trip, it was something she has been begging to see. It now has an organized schedule and location. Hoser and Cuervo rode on the new ferris wheel, the High Roller. Another thing to save for Somara. We did hang around Fremont after the Neon bit. We kicked off our first full morning with craps lessons at New York New York. I learn something new each time; this lesson was taking odds when backing the pass line bet, now if I could remember the numbers.

The major goal was reached too. Catching up on stories, goals, explanations, gossip, etc. between us all. I didn’t know Cuervo beyond Hoser’s wedding in 2007 yet I think I made a good impression, namely with my encyclopedic memory of dirty jokes I’ve remembered from grade school on. Hoser gave a clarification on the fiancée he almost married in 2006; talk about dodging a bullet! The interview I wanted to conduct with Hoser for our 25th anniversary of Greatest (College) Summer Ever fell through. Our final night was a haze of mixed drinks, cigars, a pretty waitress named Amber (or whenever she approached, we yelled Amber Alert) and steaks. Je ne regrette rien! However, Hoser agreed to try again via FaceTime since I sent him the outline of interview questions/topics I was going use.

Another major goal was achieved in lieu of Internet access being for crap! I did some reading! Namely poolside. I wish it were warmer in Vegas then. Somara hates it when it’s “too hot” but what good is the pool when it’s in the seventies-eighties F (low twenties C)? I get the chills, then sick. I completed one book I had been slugging through for months and made progress on a fun novel covering the story of Darth Bane.

A quick aside about Wi-Fi. I do leave my computer behind and not obsess too much over its presence. I just like to keep track of my finances while I’m there, pay bills as needed and post the cool crap I see ASAP. Plus I’ve developed a taste for writing over the last 20 years. Is it so wrong now?

How did the gambling go? Sports were a bust. I only managed one hockey game, lost. Grabbed futures on Marquette for 2015 (100:1!) and the Cowboys (gift for a friend, 25:1). Our wedding day lost again, 35, drat, this makes 27 2-8. Craps was up and down. Down four, up three, up 11 and finally down 45. Besides Fremont, I found a new place I enjoyed rolling the dice, O’Shea’s behind the Quad (or Imperial Palace). There was a dealer working the table who was part Robin Williams, part Chris Tucker and part Jim Carrey. We were all in stitches, laughing and rolling. I finally remembered to place side bets for the dealers too. It’s a nice thing to do.

Can’t wait to return in the Fall, once I’ve paid off the new expenses I acquired. Meanwhile, I do hope Hoser and Cuervo get to come back in the near future.

Clever College Humor take on Cantina Auditions

Yeah, yeah, the May the Fourth was last week but this bit was too good to pass up. I’m hoping my nephews who are still into Star Wars will dig it. I loved it. Numerous performers I like poked fun at themselves while demonstrating their nostalgia for the movies. It was a good mix of musical styles.

Moxie having a faerie jam

moxietoysA lovely thank-you photo from Moxie via her mom Kate. Two weekends ago we all caught up, had pizza and scored a belated Christmas present while I gave Kate a pair of shirts I had been holding on to for a while (pictures are due I’ve been promised). Moxie digs the Fairy line by Playmobil but Kate says Power Rangers and other “boy” toy lines are well liked. That’s awesome. Having grown up with a Barbie jet for my GI Joes, I too don’t buy into the gender role crap with toys.

Who can say no to Moxie’s smile anyway?

Stars roll over Griffins again with shutout

starsposter1

My Stars have won five straight in pursuit of the Calder Cup! Tonight was their first shutout, a 4-0 drubbing given to the defending champs. They were off to a shaky start given it took 18 shots-on-goal to finally have one hit the net. Then the can of whoop-ass was unleashed. So I should erase the one and pencil in a two. I’m also hoping the question mark will be the Marlies; it may pan out, the Wolves are now down 0-2 as their series moves to Toronto next week.

Good thing the AHL got the memo about my mini-vacation. I will not miss any Austin-based games while in Vegas as the action moves to Grand Rapids for two, possibly three games if necessary.

Happy Birthday to Kris and Jeremy!

Yesterday, Kris celebrated her birthday. I love this lady (like an aunt) because she was my patron to put me back in Austin. The city which has become my adopted home and she helped me return after a string of disastrous events. Kris is also getting married! She told me there was a fact-finding mission to Las Vegas last week or the one before to get everything together for November. What timing. I will be there tomorrow! I did receive the green light to purchase a wedding-honeymoon present, a ticket to the zombie-killing package at the LV Gun Store, after I get a “yes” vote from the other citizen of the Maggi Republic, it went up to $175.

Today is Jeremy’s. A great friend for about as long as I’ve been an official employee of Apple. He’s really lucky. When we’re at the Stars v. Griffins game, they will wish him happy birthday with all the season-ticket holders. Nice! I think his gift is going to be late. Jeremy doesn’t play as much D&D anymore, his son Ben is a much cooler toy if you’ve seen the movies; the kid loves to play peek-a-boo! After Las Vegas, I’ll think of something and/or enlist the help of his wife KK.

A tribute to my cats due to my upcoming trip

I think they often feel this way, namely when we’re packing but I know they’re cool with anyone coming to feed them, except Nemo. They’ll be grateful it’s just me going away for a few days.

Now this got me to thinking about Tiki, Angel and Jack. Do they share the same ambivalence with Somara and me? Tiki is definitely the “idiot” cat since he is naturally friendly.

A shout-out from Brian Posehn and friends! Check it!

John (aka Lothosian) and I got mentioned in the opening of Nerd Poker episode 72! It’s pretty funny, namely when you hear Sark’s comments.

We felt a little bummed when we weren’t included in the first recorded show after Brian returned from Austin. However, the comedian received a ton of goodies from the numerous people who went to see him. I too would be overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and fandom.

So I politely left a note on the Nerd Poker forum and a moderator sent the cast a note. Voilia, some nerd fist-bumps on #72.

Thanks everyone. Even if you’re not into comedy or D&D, check it out, listen and get a chuckle, especially when my parents said nothing good would ever come of D&D, my communications degree nor attending rock concerts.

Happy Birthday Anje

My favorite sister-in-law celebrates whatever. I only know she’s younger but a trooper to wrangle three boys, especially when two must be home-schooled. Appears that education isn’t a high priority in Qatar for accommodating foreigners. Anje has a degree in teaching so I bet this is relatively manageable, it’s just harder when they’re your kids. How relieved I remain today. Dad quit teaching early!

Now why is Anje my favorite sister-in-law? I only have three thankfully. Linda (Brian’s wife) is nice but I’ve never had a long conversation or anything with her, this puts her in the “No Opinion/Not Enough Information” column. Yvette (Somara’s younger sister) and I don’t get along after the Madison-biting-Uncle-Steve incident along with how DINKs allegedly have fewer rights in the Bridge-a-verse. Plus I find her to be a mean person overall. Being the mother of four kids is not an excuse.

Enough though, it’s Anje’s day. I’m hoping she had (Qatar is half a day ahead) great day. The weather was fantastic (39° C!), the beach is always open and there’s plenty of Western restaurants. Today gives me a good excuse to hit the Apple Cafe for a piece of cake, I’ll e-mail a picture of it to her.

Last Fall’s car accident is finally over

A great piece of news in the ongoing, annoying saga involving the Honda getting smacked a week before we went to Las Vegas. We finally got our money from that asshole’s insurance company over the car rentals. It wan’t the full amount because they said they weren’t liable for the insurance we purchased. However, after months and their client being an irresponsible loser who drives while on her phone, I’ll take it.

Just in time too. We owed the IRS again this year. Don’t fret for us. We have money put away when such financial emergencies happen so we didn’t suffer. Now we’re in the process of rebuilding our safety net in case another unexpected expense happens.

Off it went to the reserve! I wonder if that insurance company knew I was headed to Las Vegas next week like the $1200 GOP hail mary we received in 2008?

The National

The National is an act I’ve been trying to see in concert for years. I got hooked on the singer’s voice through a charity record that included Scissor Sisters, an uplifting tune called “So Far Around the Bend.” Of all the post-9/11 New York acts, these guys and Interpol are my favorites.

Contrary to the unfair label of Sadcore being applied to them, I don’t find their music to be a downer. Much more the opposite. I can see how their detractors feel the material to be melancholy, heavy and overdramatic. Last Thanksgiving they did show a sense of humor by covering a song from Bob’s Burgers called “Sailors in Your Mouth.” It’s about gravy, not something dirty.

Anyway, The National seems to have a pretty strong following in Austin. They played three sold-out shows at the Moody Theater. I caught the middle performance from my rather pricey balcony seats. Being 45 and the concert happening on a “school night,” having a seat was for the best. I’m too old for all the shoving on the floor.

The opener was a pretty cool act from California called Warpaint. Nice to see all-women bands getting their opportunities and to fill out the ranks most people think is occupied by just the Go-Go’s and Bangles. I need to pick up their latest album soon.

Everything stayed on time pretty well. The headliner hit the stage with crowd favorites. Sadly I have a hard time remember the titles beyond the most distinctive tunes like “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “Anyone’s Ghost,” “I Need My Girl,” and “This is the Last Time.” The setlist can be found here if you care. Give the music a try too. Put aside all those Eighties compilations and join the 21st century. I especially love the title of the current album Trouble Will Find Me. It’s open to interpretation.

May the Fourth be with You via comics

thestarwarsWith all the news of JJ Abrams finally shooting Episode VII: A New Hip (thanks Stephen Colbert!), Disney could draw away the sadder attention they don’t want fans to know. Dark Horse’s license to publish Star Wars-based titles ends this year. Marvel which is also owned by Disney, will return to fill the void probably after their move to LA.

Admittedly, my skepticism over Marvel doing Star Wars is based upon old material which was uneven at best. It wasn’t entirely Marvel’s fault. The universe, characters, etc. weren’t well defined and Lucas didn’t have an ironclad grip on what the writers/artists could do.

When Dark Horse got the opportunity in 1992 (or was it 1993?). Everybody was thrilled. This publisher had done a solid job with creating new adventures with the Aliens, Predator and Terminator franchises. Their original material isn’t crap neither so I’m confident Dark Horse won’t shrivel up and die in 2015.

To close out their superior run, they are publishing a handful of miniseries but I want to focus on my two favorites.

The first is The Star Wars. It’s a comic-book adaptation of George Lucas’ earlier rough draft on what would become the legendary movie. It’s a good thing he continued to rework everything. As amusing at The is, there are too many characters and the story resembles Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress more distinctly. Still, diehards will chuckle continuously on how the names, races and tech were juggled around and recycled in the sequels. My favorite is the expression, “May the force of others be with you,” being said by the Jedi Knight characters General Luke Skywalker (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Annikin Starkiller (Luke). Modernizing the look paid off too. I think the retro, Flash Gordon stylings would’ve fallen flat on 1977 audiences.

starwars13What makes this 24-part miniseries stand apart from the dozens Dark Horse has done is how successfully author Brian Wood recaptured the magic I felt after seeing Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. The definition of magic being the further adventures of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewbacca were going to be as kickass as those previous movies. We all know how that panned out. Not so here.

I’m sure the period between Star and Empire have been covered to death yet the author takes another crack and it’s great. The story begins with the Rebel fleet trying to find a new planet to hide on. Despite destroying the Death Star, Yavin was no longer safe and if the Rebel Alliance is to survive, it needs a world far from Imperial prying. Meanwhile, the Empire is having some difficulty internally. Losing the Death Star was a significant hit to the economy and resources. Plus enlistments are dropping partially out of fear and passive support for the rebellion. The Emperor’s confidence in Darth Vader is shaken over these events. So he transfers his apprentice to oversee the construction of the replacement Death Star instead of hunting down the Rebels. Vader senses something being amiss and starts the skullduggery he would eventually reveal in Empire.

The Star Wars wraps up next month with issue 8 and will be available in a trade paperback laster in the year. Star Wars (aka In the Shadow of Yavin) has a TPB covering issues 1-6 out now. Currently, the series is at #16.

Stars advance to Western semi-finals, face the Griffins

My Stars swept the OKC Barons last Wednesday night. I think they received the memo saying, “Hey, Steve has D&D rescheduled for Friday, we gotta’ win to avoid a fourth game that evening!” It was pretty sweet since the Barons robbed us of the high we had from last season when we were the divisional champ, expecting to at least make it closer to the Calder Cup.

Momentum was certainly on the Stars’ side. The initial two games in OKC were won in OT, talk about cutting it close. Things looked similar when they gave up a 2-0 lead to be tied 2-all by the third; the short-handed goal was irksome. Then the Stars got it together, scored a third and cinched it with an empty-netter courtesy of a turnover by the Barons’ blue line. There were people taunting goalie and former Star Richard Bachmann yet I knew better. When the coach yells to skate in, you do it and trust your teammates have control of the puck. The Barons were desperate as the numerous penalties they collected demonstrated. It didn’t pay off but our power play needs to be better.

Now to hope they don’t get too soft from waiting on the other teams finishing their best-of-five series. Chicago defeated Rochester this afternoon so it means we now face Grand Rapids, a first. Chicago gets Toronto.

Even better. Games one and two will be while I’m here. The next possible three will all be away during the week I party in Vegas! I won’t miss out. Can the Stars pull off another sweep? Maybe. Four games in a row is harder than three. The GR Griffins are also the defending champs.

Will we advance? I think so. Who will we face after GR? I’m going on a limb and saying Toronto. Chicago may have a higher seed, Rochester gave them a good scare while the Marlies swept my ol’ Milwaukee Admirals.
