Happy belated birthday to the Hoser

This failure on my part is OK. Next weekend I will be celebrating the Marquette version in Las Vegas. A fitting way to commemorate the 25th birthday recognition of us being friends. Although I’m about a year older, José’s came up before mine in the cycle within our newly formed clique. What sucked was the date. Final exams were usually right around the corner or final papers were due. Seems the delaying element never changes!

I was going to put together a movie I shot for him via Pinballz then realized as I was downloading the material off my iPhone, I just took pictures of Zoltar giving advice. D’oh! Sorry dude.

At least I will not be visiting Sin City empty handed when we rendezvous at the airport, no wait, the hotel. His gift will be packed in my suitcase. Either way, Hoser will be putting it to good use.

As a quick tribute to one of my first meetings with José, a little Norm movie because Cheers was his favorite TV show and he used to be the Puerto Rican version of George Wendt’s trademark character.

This month’s D&D-themed header

Yeah, yeah, it’s May Fourth…Star Wars, Star Wars, Star Wars. However, I’ve chosen to go with this awesome piece of fan art by an immensely talented lady in Romania who goes by the handle of Madam Marla. You can see more at this link and I will be adding a button/link to her Deviantart page. MM answered my e-mail very quickly about a commission I would like to have done for my birthday of something similar even though most D&D players I’ve known are male. Be prepared to hear from me about your favorite character at the table if we’ve played. I don’t want to tax MM’s patience but I wonder if she’s comfortable with non-Disney characters. Again, I’ll let you know because I’m very impressed.

This picture is also appropriate due to some Disney-on-ice thing coming to the CPC and the theme is Rockin’ Princesses. Hey, cool ladies who aren’t afraid to play a tabletop game is rockin’ in my opinion. I envy the younger generation. When I was a teenager in the Eighties, ladies rarely played D&D. It was considered socially unacceptable for stupid reasons. I would also blame the socially retarded male players contributing to the problem.

Enjoy and fellow gamers, send me your suggestions of which Disney human or other character you would be if I (hopefully, Bugs Bunny) were the DM.

Happy (belated) 108th birthday to Grandma

Just like a greeting card, I missed the exact date for my maternal grandmother’s birthday. It would’ve been number 108 if she were alive. Given her stubbornness, I think Grandma had good odds to make it a century-plus had she avoided cancer.

Looking back, my maternal grandparents were great to me on the fiscal side…something numerous self-made Republicans often forget with their own backgrounds; I only wish she were better in the people department. Science needs to hurry up with that damned time machine so I could go back, meet her when she was younger and not cranky. I’m confident Grandma wasn’t boy crazy like McFly’s mother but I think she was into other things besides teaching high school.

RIP Bob Hoskins and Al Feldstein

A sad double whammy to lose a couple key figures in humor but the former had his run in drama with respected films like The Crying Game, Mona Lisa, Zulu Dawn and The Cotton Club.

So first up is Bob Hoskins. I had read recently about his retirement due to Parkinson’s yet I thought he would carry on a while longer like Michael J Fox. Bob had a fantastic body of work in America and the UK. However, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?‘s technical marvels succeeded through his great acting under rigorous conditions when digital-film capabilities just weren’t feasible. I can’t think of a movie he did I found completely awful because Bob was the silver lining. Although I’ve never seen Mario Brothers, I bet I could stomach it thanks to him and Dennis Hopper.

Al Feldstein isn’t super well-known, he was a more behind-the-scenes person at MAD during its heyday. Through him, many great writers and artists joined the magazine: Prohias (Spy v. Spy), Dave Berg (The Lighter Side of…), Don Martin, etc. Therefore, numerous contemporary humor owes a huge debt of gratitude to Al: The OnionThe Daily Show, The Colbert Report, National Lampoon, The Simpsons and every person who went through that infamous sarcastic phase from nine to 13. When I was growing up in the Seventies, MAD was puzzling, funny and considered somewhat naughty. It’s pretty tame compared to what exists now but in 1977, doing a parody called Crappy Days was pushing the envelope. With Al at the helm, MAD transformed into a magazine and beat out Time‘s prediction of it being a short-lived satire rag.

Thanks gentlemen for the entertainment and laughs!

Big Bang Dalek Cake

dalekcakeSomara’s first cake in about 10 weeks. A birthday treat for her primary patrons Dave and Tracy. This go round it was an attempt to do something more original with Doctor Who so Somara went with a cartoon that made the rounds a couple years ago. I don’t follow Big Bang Theory beyond the DVD sets my cousin gave us, yet I don’t recall Sheldon’s little rhyme. I need to pay more attention.

I really like this though.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier: Must See

capamerica2

Marvel has taken the title away from Pixar for the kick-ass movie streak. Let me put in a quick qualifier. Only Marvel characters tied to The Avengers since the rebooted Spider-Man, the very dreadful Fantastic Four and uneven X-Men movies are outside this arrangement. Pixar’s run was 11 (from Toy Story to Toy Story 3, it ended with Cars 2 while Cars received a passing grade until the cynical, crappy 2 appeared), Marvel-Avengers is currently at nine (although Iron Man 2 and Thor were sluggish, they’ve corrected this gripe by 3 and The Dark World). I’m confident they will hit 10 since everyone is stoked about The Avengers 2, yet I don’t know what will follow. Guardians of the Galaxy shouldn’t count unless they find a way to tie this into the Avengers.

As for Winter, the new directors capitalized on current events with the NSA and our government’s over dependence on drones. There’s a touch of Minority Report in SHIELD’s twisted logic too. The Cap, being someone who embodies and lives by the ideals the current cretins in Washington pay lip service to, gets caught up in a plot reminiscent of those paranoid Seventies thrillers (The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor) in which he cannot trust anyone, including Col. Fury. All the anachronism gags are kept to a minimum instead of being a crutch. I do admit, Captain America being a remnant of WWII works much better today than when he was reintroduced to Marvel Comics in the early Sixties.

The action is fast paced. The plot is credible and amusing, its title is a red herring in my opinion. I could’ve done without the excessive product placements, including Cap and Black Widow hanging out in an Apple Store to research something as they’re politely asked by a retail employee if they need help. It helps to have seen the first movie due to some callbacks to those events. The cameos were wonderful nods to the fans: Stan Lee as always, Gary Shandling’s pesky senator makes an appearance, Jenny Agutter of Logan’s Run fame is one you must pay attention to. Robert Redford’s major role was clever because he starred in several of the Seventies flicks I mentioned involving conspiracies (All The President’s Men anyone?). I loved how Cap’s Seventies sidekick The Falcon was integrated. He can’t speak to birds but at least his ability to fly was credible. Superfans will recognize the terrorist leader from the first act. Anyone who posts a comment explaining the villain gets a little prize. The major rule, I have to actually know you.

A round of applause to the team(s) involved. I loved Captain America as a little boy. When I grew older, I found him to be more relevant as an Avenger, he was never interesting enough to carry his comic book. It wasn’t the character, I think it was the various Marvel writers/artists’ execution.

Alamo Extras: Other Late Sixties Marvel cartoons by Ralph Baskshi, Tom Hiddleston doing his Chris Evans imitation, an outtake from the last Thor movie, scenes from the terrible late Seventies-early Eighties live-action adaptation of Captain America I used to watch on CBS and a news story involving ex-soldiers dressed as Batman and Captain America rescuing a cat from a house fire. We got there a tad late.

There can only be one!

highlander

Playmobil’s random series six has arrived but it’s only the dude characters. I scored one because the minimal amount to put on a credit card at Terra Toys is $5 so I threw this guy in while buying another for a little boy’s birthday. It’s OK, the recipient is the son of a co-worker. I was hoping to get the secret agent or surfing Santa yet this Highlander is pretty cool. He is armed with a hand-and-a-half sword (aka a bastard sword) and thankfully, he is wearing leggings under his kilt.

The Mavericks

mavericksThe musical celebration for my 15th anniversary was courtesy of Raul Malo, lead singer of The Mavericks. Not the Dallas NBA team or the nearby high school’s mascot (McNeil is within a mile of work). I met Raul and the band at SXSW last year via Waterloo Records. Later on I helped Raul with getting him a portable for his son for Christmas; nothing illegal or pro quid quo happened, it was paid for. All I asked in return was to let me know when the Mavericks were playing Austin again. My adopted home has a long history with the group, this city has always supported acts other regions considered “too Country” to rock (aka Lyle Lovett, Rosanne Cash, Dwight Yoakam). The Mavericks did start out in the early Nineties sounding like a typical NashVegas act, namely on their hit “What a Crying Shame,” but in 1995 they busted out with Songs for all Occasions which contains a great mix of Americana, pre-Seventies Country, Tejano and Fifties Rock. I was hooked ever since. Before KGSR had to sink to a lowest-common denominator format, these guys were a staple alongside SRV, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Nick Lowe.

It was a fantastic concert. Raul gave us nice seats in the balcony with a straight-ahead view of the stage. Accompanying the quintet were up to four horn players and an upright bass player. They played their hits, “Here Comes the Rain,” “Dance the Night Away,” “What a Crying Shame,” “Back in My Arms Again,” and “Dance in the Moonlight.” There were covers, namely “Okie from Muskogee” because it was something they started playing when they opened for Marilyn Manson in 1992. Others I enjoyed, “La Bamba,” and “Boogie Shoes.”

A big treat was getting to have our picture taken with the band before the show. I had never seen the backstage areas of the Moody Theater. It’s nothing super special. They do have a nice view of Willie Nelson Way.

Ouch! The E.T.-Atari legend is (mostly) true

etatariTo give you an idea about the joke from the back cover of MAD in 1982, that $38 suggested price for one of the worst video games ever made would be $90. I thought the new PS4 and XboxOne stuff jumping to $60 was robbery.

After years of speculating, the rumors have proven to be (mostly) true about Atari dumping thousands of the unsold cartridges into a landfill. I beg to differ with the Guardian about ET causing the Atari 2600’s downfall. The revered console continued to be manufactured and sold until 1990. The home console slump happened more from “too much of a good thing.” Plus ET was just one of many poorly made games which turned people off. Atari didn’t control who had a cartridge “burner” so it’s how an X-rated game was made along with the crappy Parker Brothers’ adaptations.

I’m glad they did find these discarded things. I’ve loosely followed the rumor for over a decade. I leaned toward believing it because in America, it’s just cheaper to piss away resources into a hole instead of recycling the materials.

Cat Cafe in New York

First Japan, now New York, I wonder if Austin will get one eventually. The real nagging question I have is how did the owners succeed in negotiating with the Health Examiners on allowing this. The place probably doesn’t serve any serious food but any animals are a concern. Around here you can have shop cats, namely the two famous cats at Dragon’s Lair (they love books!) and I remember an antique store on the South Side.

Should I ever get to New York, this place will be on my short list with a good Broadway show and Alex Guarnaschelli’s restaurant Butter.

Finally I have proof of Texas tarantulas!

Above is my third encounter with a “wild” tarantula in Central Texas. Many friends, even around here think these arachnids (they’re not insects technically) don’t exist outside of deserts. Nope, they also prefer tall grass to hide in, then they can ambush their prey, usually other insects. Tarantulas are often shy and/or overcautious because scorpions and birds find them delicious. You have to be careful with them. They often like to jump straight up which is a little unsettling. I’m not afraid of them yet I will wince should one spring up at me, probably to scare me away.

This tarantula was wandering the driveway of the house I cat/housesit for. It was very lucky I didn’t run it over with my car. I accidentally noticed it later due to the jumping up part I mentioned. After the movie concluded, I shoo’d it back into the grass to keep it safe. Tarantulas may be ugly and scary but they do help keep the ecosystem in check.

Other encounters? A decade ago I saw one on the same house in a window sill while leaving. It spooked Somara, she hates all spiders.

The first was my favorite. I spotted it 14 years ago trying to get across the street when I came home from work. I watched the creature walk slowly in front of my car. I protected its journey and in return, I think the tarantula gave me some good luck. Not really, I don’t believe in such things. However, sparing its life did give me a mental uplift during a very rough week.

Overdone and dry

bigboybobWhich is not how you should wash and dry this shirt. It’s an inside joke for those who follow and love the show Bob’s Burgers based upon the review he received from the Moody Foodie, played by food fanatic…Patton Oswalt.

Size does matter

hercules

Pinballz recently rolled out is allegedly the largest machine ever made for commercial use. Of call companies to manufacture Hercules, it was Atari who tried their hand at pinball in the late Seventies to early Eighties. They weren’t very good machines in my opinion. The only other model I’ve played was Superman, made as a tie-in with the 1978 Richard Donner movie.

However, I think this one’s novelty makes up for Atari’s common shortcomings. The flippers are wooden and it uses a cue ball. The latter changes the physics somewhat. Personally I notice the ball falling down the side drains less often.

It’s six tokens a game but I find this amusing. Any machine capable of making me feel like I’m a little kid playing with my dad at Zayres, killing time while mom shops, is a good experience.

A couple cool tools for Dungeonmasters

Below are a couple examples of actually making role-playing games more enjoyable. One helps out my “job” as DM without needing a computer or a pesky tablet (aka, an iPad). The other feeds my love of dice giving other random possibilities.

First up is a movie of a product called a Boogie Board™. My friend Alaire introduced me to it. I had to grab one at Michael’s with a coupon immediately. I find it more useful than a tablet because it doesn’t keep going to sleep, it uses a stylus with less grief and I don’t have to tell it to keep making a new file. One button erases it. Should I want to keep the contents, I can just take a quick picture. A USB connection to recharge or capture the contents would be nice, similar to the LiveScribe pen.

The Lego® Dice probably feed my OCD with randomness. What makes them super cool is that their “sides” can be altered or changed by putting on different 2 x 2 Legos called tiles. Tiles are those bricks which make a smooth surface and you can’t stack anything further on them. These only work due to other Legos having nubs protruding too far out, messing up the roll and results. I did a bit of hunting at Big Lots, the Lego Store and elsewhere to cannibalize three games (they only include one die per game). On the upside, I didn’t spend full price and we now have extra Legos for other projects. After we get ourselves paid back from the IRS, I’m going to order other colored tiles from the online store. What I’m looking for run about 10-20 cents each.

What I will use them for I’m still pondering. Post your suggestions!
