To the rescue!

Sorry about the recent outages, key issue may have been solved

Picayune has had intermittent freak outs and then I took it down to put a different piece of hardware to experiment with.

The good news is it wasn’t hardware nor the core OS, what a relief!

The bad news is I had to remove a plug-in which is supposed to keep the spamming down. As much as I hate those mother-f’ers, the other plug-in seems to do a good job classifying their nonsense into the spam bucket so I can delete them later. Performance is fine. It won’t affect any of my few readers/followers.

Mike Modano

modanonmeLast night I got to meet the man who will be known as the highest-scoring US-born player for many years. Much like Martin Brodeur, Mike Modano now holds or has unified two records held by two great individuals: Goals were Joey Mullen (502); Assists & Points were Phil Housley (894 & 1232 respectively).

Sure I’m a Roenick fan but am an American so I do cheer on countrymen in sports, even the goofy Williams sisters in tennis (they’re Jehovah’s Witnesses).  Mike was a phenomenal scorer yet more importantly, consistent. John LeClair had three 50-goal seasons, then back trouble ended his career early plus his final years in Pittsburgh were awful. Mike had nine seasons with 30 or more which is no small feat.

Anyway, he was in the Austin area to be saluted by our kick-ass team as he goes through a little tour to retire his number permanently in Dallas. Plus to be thanked for his efforts to strengthen hockey’s popularity in Texas. Laugh all you want my fellow Yankees. Several of the high schools around here have teams. UT and Texas A&M will never get beyond club sadly, basketball and the state religion (aka football) are too important to divert money toward an NCAA Division I effort.

During my brief face time, I asked him if he was ever congratulated by Mullen and Housley. Mike said, yes, they were present at the games when he broke their records. Pretty cool to be congratulated by your heroes!

I think Mike’s accomplishments will go unbeaten during the remainder of my lifetime. Currently, America hasn’t produced any new offensive wizards in the NHL lately. All the players who are close to achieving half of Mike’s numbers are nearing retirement.

Belated gift to my friend Flynn

flynnshirtSporting a shirt dedicated to his favorite roleplaying game and the one I used to work on for GDW. It’s an uber geeky joke poking fun at Traveller’s odd rule with character generation in which your PC can be killed before you get to play. Before I was hired, the owners amended the game to change the death result to a serious injury that could oust your PC from their profession early. Too late, the inside joke continues to stick.

The latest adjustment for my shoe collection

100chucksAnother Elfa sale at the Container Store, another pair of shelves, another reduction of space between shelves to accommodate my Chucks! As expected, I have more shoes than solution.

I regret nothing! I do promise there will be a proper census to finally answer/update what is on my FAQ.

These colors don’t run

mericaBut make sure you don’t wash them with something likely to bleed in the wash, like  something red or purple. Oh yeah, turn it inside out, use cold water and always air dry.

Coming up on 15 years…

To celebrate, I tweaked the Mac’s 30th anniversary logo and melded it into my spot on the poster. My name is surrounded by numerous other people, some are co-workers I even know. I blurred them out to protect their privacy. You can tell I succeeded in getting a picture of the real Apple poster, the lighting gives the white background a yellowish-brown tinge.

The posters demonstrate how much my employer has grown in just the last few years. To give you an idea, when I was hired in 1999, which puts me on poster number three. There is a total of 10 posters dedicated to the people who’ve helped make Apple the 800-pound gorilla it is today. Ergo, many employees have been more recent additions via the Stores, other nations and my location in Austin.

If you were a former Apple employee, tell me your badge number and I can hunt down your location.

Happy 15th birthday Miette

Miette claiming her "place" while I'm watching TV.

Miette claiming her “place” while I’m watching TV.

Stray cats weaseling their way into my heart (and home) didn’t begin with Miette, it was Mongo but this little stinker was too sweet to give up for adoption.

Originally I was going to name her Lily to keep the Blazing Saddles theme Somara and I started with Mongo. However I don’t like to give animals “human” names; Molly was already named by the previous owners so I kept it.

During the first couple years, Miette was rather reluctant to be a cuddlier. She liked her space. I received numerous scratches on my forearms cradling her. Then one evening before bed, Miette began her routine of hoping up on me for some attention. We’ve been pretty inseparable any time I sit on the couch or lie down.

Today my cat is 75 in human years yet there’s no signs of Miette slowing down. She’s still very spry, playful and attentive. She does have a thyroid problem which makes her frequently hungry. The medication has slowed the process while we continue to (try) fatten the gray comet with canned food. Unfortunately, it has given Nemo a taste for the stinky wet stuff. Kuroneko and Isis are indifferent; they’ll eat it if they find it but dry is cool, just not Nemo the Spoiled.

I hope Miette keeps on going for another few years. She is a loving, loyal and amusing cat. After numerous cuts and attempts, she now loves to be cradled like a baby. So much that Miette will burrow her face into your chest while purring loudly.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman: Rental at Best

sherman-peabodyCompared to how poorly Jay Ward’s previous properties have fared, Peabody is a success over Dudley Do-Right, Boris & Natasha and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. I almost forgot George of the Jungle which was way better than Peabody. Still this Dreamworks dreck is yet another waste of 80 minutes yet will keep the rear seats of a mini-van pacified..

My gripe is that the time-travel element from the source is a lame plot device to rip off Finding Nemo. Somara pointed out quickly how Pixar’s story wasn’t original neither. I completely agree but the execution was a thousand times better. Plus the “moral lesson” didn’t feel so heavy handed.

Peabody has funny moments. The exposition show how Mr. Peabody became the smartest mammal living on Earth. Some historical figure are amusing: Patrick Warburton has Agamemnon, Jess Harnell as George Washington and Stanley Tucci as da Vinci. The rest are the usual laziness from Dreamworks except for the cameo of Albert Einstein.

I think Peabody just doesn’t work in long-form storytelling. The writers managed to work in the character’s trademark in puns, just not much else. The short-lived Cartoon Nnetwork show Time Squad was a better successor.

Will kids like it? Probably. There’s fart joke, high-speed chases and the obligatory bully girl to widen the audience’s base. Peabody won’t go on to be a franchise like Despicable Me or the turgid Shrek crap.

Alamo Extras: The Ben Stiller Show‘s skit “B- Time Traveler,” a Peabody & Sherman short of them meeting Cleopatra and Caesar, and a Quisp cereal commercial done by Jay Ward’s animation studio.

Holy fire hazard! Batman is now 75

The Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight, the greatest fictional detective since Sherlock Holmes…made his debut on this day in Detective Comics #27. If four terrible movies made by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher couldn’t kill him, I think my favorite non-powered superhero has a good shot at living to be 100. Plus Ben Affleck is a better choice than Michael Keaton. Bite me detractors! The best person to play a serious Batman was George Clooney. Any jackass can wear the rubber suit and beat up the villains. Portraying a credible Bruce Wayne is the sign of success. Here, Michael Keaton turned in his usual acting…Beetlejuice sleepwalking. Christian Bale? Ugh. His Batman is comical and needs a cough drop whenever speaking.

Enough geek complaining. The Guardian provided a nice montage/collage of images to celebrate.

Congratulations to Travis Morin and my Stars!

My team was the first to cinch a spot in this season’s playoffs! I think we will be raising another banner next fall for at least earning a divisional championship again. Bringing home the Calder Cup remains the goal.

What has been even better is the phenomenal season center Travis Morin is having. Although this might be it for him as a professional and/or a Star due to age and the number of games he’s played, he became the first player on our team to earn 80 points. Morin is also leading the AHL in points while being second in goals and assists.

Now I hope he won’t get snakebite when the playoffs begin.

RIP Oderus Ungerus & Lorenzo Semple Jr.

Sad week regarding a couple odd creators.

First was the news of GWAR’s lead singer being found dead earlier. Haven’t heard any follow up about the foul play suspicion. Oderus nee Dave Brockie gave me many years of laughter and entertainment through his band; he was the only founding member remaining. I got turned on to the exaggerated Metal act in 1990 by my friend Sheila’s younger brother Paul. On their debut album, the band resembled Warhammer minis soaked in blood but the music was more parody than serious. Gotta’ remember, Metal was peaking thanks to hair bands, Metallica going mainstream, and its core audience having to grow up and get real day jobs. I got to see Dave and the gang perform in Milwaukee with Killing Joke opening, major mismatch. I had a great time thanks to the stage show involving fake blood, a meat grinder, a re-enactment of a game show and other silliness. My current girlfriend’s nephew went with me. When got home, a roommate asked me how the show was, I said, “GWAR is just a modernized Kiss.” Oh the stink eye I received from the nephew since I had attacked a sacred Metal icon, never mind that Kiss was originally a Glam act.

GWAR held another special place in my heart three years later. They were the first Austin show I saw at Liberty Lunch. This time they were their own opener called the X-Cops. Oderus mocked their recent “hit” on MTV and refused to finish it. The stage show was even grosser; it focused on Michael Jackson’s horrible secrets getting out while revealing he was an alien all along.

It’s sad Dave passed away. I recently bought the new album. Is it any good? Let’s say GWAR is and always will be, an acquired taste.

The other sadness was Lorenzo Semple. He was the man responsible for adapting Batman for TV in the Sixties. Besides writing the pilot along with the first few episodes, Lorenzo set up the show’s bible for other writers to follow, namely how Batman was a comedy done with a straight face.

Other than Batman, he was involved with famous movies like The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor, Never Say Never Again (he gets a pass here) and Flash Gordon.

Thanks for the cool stuff gentlemen!

Pardon this month’s virtual dust

I’ve been enduring the server going offline intermittently for the last couple months. Not sure what the exact cause is but it’s driving me bonkers. Currently the Picayune is being hosted on another Mac Mini I received permission to borrow from work. Only time will tell if it matters. So far I think it doesn’t because something in the MySQL log points toward it being software. We’ll see.

Advanced apologies should the site be taken down again this weekend while I try to put the original hardware back into place.

Just for you Helen from the Big Dummy!

fredsanfordMy Redd Foxx/Fred Sanford shirt was finally pulled out of a storage bin in the living room! I bought this from a TV-driven Web store because it had the Star Wars tee I wanted for my co-worker Kathy and as expected, something Cheers related for Jose, he won’t get it until Vegas.

I’ve loved Redd Foxx’s character ever since I was a little kid. Of course, I didn’t understand the show’s context nor controversy back then. Redd was just a elder guy who’d say funny things like “you big dummy!” and “Esther, you ugly!”

This piece of apparel was mandatory thanks to an amusing anecdote I will leave to Helen to explain if she chooses to grace my site.
