Like Father, Like Daughter!

tmntshirtsMy co-worker and friend Aaron is here sporting the TMNT shirts I scored for him and his younger daughter. The designs are from Tee Fury so to make them unique, the artist “built” the ninja foursome with colored words describing each turtle’s personality. I wanted to get something exclusive for Evie because I have had an easier time finding cool stuff in the older sister’s size like Chucks or a clever T-Shirt. It’s a lesson I learned from my friend Lester who has four daughters. He made sure each child received attention individually to prevent anyone from feeling disliked, favored or anything negative.

I think they both look stylish!

Happy Birthday Brian!

My kid brother lives on the West Coast now so at least this is valid for more than a couple hours unlike the Central Zone.

His birthday was often a form of Spring Break when we were growing up. Our parents would take us out to dinner, we’d get to do something fun like a movie or the arcade and it was usually on a school night!

Here’s hoping Brian has a great time in his digs with Linda and the two kids. I know I have a good shot at finally visiting. The trick will be getting it be related to my job so I can save some money.

Mars Attacks Judge Dredd

mars-versus-dreddYeesh! I haven’t written a decent story covering any actual comic books in almost two years. Well I’m trying to get back on track with one of the oddest crossover mini-series to hit the shelves since Predator v. Magnus Robot Fighter. This storyline wasn’t too hard for the publisher to achieve because IDW publishes both titles; I’m guessing Topps no longer controls the gory Mars Attacks! jazz and 2000 AD always has an American surrogate for their Dredd stuff.

Anyway, I had to get this because I’ve been a Judge Dredd fan from the Eighties. When I saw the cover of the first issue, I laughed, “Those Martians are soooo dead!” If the Xenomorphs (the creatures’ official name from Alien) couldn’t kill Dredd in 2003, the Martians can only piss him off at best.

The story is set in the always bleak yet darkly funny Mega City One (the Martians don’t have a setting of their own to merge) and kicks off with small timer Crusty Smalls taking over the city’s mafia with some Martian assistance. Elsewhere, Dredd is investigating why crime has dropped 40 percent in a Sector 301. While shooting up Don Mumbletti’s club and goons, he gets attacked by several Martians. Due to their gruesome appearance, Dredd figures they’re mutants from the Wasteland but the weapons they used against him are more powerful than anyone on Earth has. Dredd enlists the series’ other iconic character, Psi-Judge Anderson, to probe Don Mumbletti’s mind to find out what’s going on, plus it’s impossible understand the gangster’s speech. Anderson discovers that the Mafia has allied themselves with more than just “out-of-towners,” these possible mutants are from space set to destroy all life on Earth.

It wouldn’t be a Judge Dredd comic without the trademark swears like “Grud on a Greenie” and Drokk,” or the little in-jokes about America. I think the critics who hated either movie adaption failed to take into account the source material which the comic faithfully maintains.

As for the Martians. I’ve never liked them much. Tim Burton’s movie was just a messy hodgepodge of three-by-five cards being passed off as characters which should’ve been expected, their source material were just trading cards. Letting Judges Dredd and Anderson kick their asses was more satisfying than Slim Whitman albums.

The trade paperback is highly recommended for Judge Dredd’s limited fan base in America. For others, it’s a nice, quick, amusing read since the Martians are probably more familiar.

The Lego Movie: Must See

legomovieFor once, a movie based upon a well-loved toy isn’t an 80-minute commercial or a Michael Bay piece of crap! Pardon my cynicism but the Lego brand isn’t tied to anything decent if you watch the Cartoon Network, see Ninjago and Chima.

The premise begins with the usual everyman going through his day in a Lego-based world filled with numerous jokes poking fun at the real world, here it’s Emmett, a typical yellow guy from a construction set. When he witnesses a mysterious figure poking around in the rubble, Emmett’s life is caught up in a vast adventure that travels across realities (aka, the different Lego lines, e.g. knights, cowboys, DC superheroes, etc.) and the tropes or clichés practically every action-saga film has used for the past 30 years.

What made Lego work was how well the balance between funny and silly was maintained. It avoided falling into the trap of just being plain inane or simplified. I would put it on par with Pixar’s stronger fare, it appeals to adults and children on different levels. Lego also makes uses the voice cast very well, namely Will Ferrell as the villain Lord Business. I quickly recognized Charlie Day since he brings his manic Charlie Kelly-esque character to the Eighties Spaceman (one of the first specialized sets I remember Lego selling before I became a teenager). Liam Neeson as Bad Cop brings surprising giggles because he has played heavies for years now.

Anything further would be spoilers. There are just a slew of surprises which made the movie a joy to see.

Finally, I feel the Lego movie turned out well due to the building blocks’ versatility. They’ve been around for 50 years, over three generations have played with them. Plus they’re not gender specific like Barbie or Transformers.

Again I’m glad the movie’s makers did a great job defeating my cynicism by making a solid comedy worth watching over and not another DVD to play in the minivan to pacify children for the drive to San Antonio.

Now to play the soundtrack to get the title song out of my head!

Alamo Extras: The White Stripes video “Fell in Love with a Girl,” a little history about the Lego company, a fan video of Abba’s “Take a Chance on me,” Spider-Man having an adventure while buying ice cream and a tour of a real house in the UK made exclusively of the plastic bricks.

New podcasts I’m hooked on #3

History is one of my strongest subjects whether it be Trivial Pursuit, Geeks Who Drink or general conversation. How I didn’t jump on Stuff You Missed in History Class from the day it began is beyond me! It came up through The Onion’s AV Club‘s section about new discoveries, so I wasn’t alone.

SYMiHC is part of the Discovery Channel’s podcast network covering numerous topics with Stuff You Should Know being their foundation (more about this in another post). The podcasts are probably supplemental material to drive traffic toward the cable channels and Web site, however, I think the podcasts have become the real stars.

What topics are covered vary. Sometimes the hosts follow a theme during a particular month or holiday: Black History month for February; Richard III’s remains being confirmed last year, etc. They also strive to cover areas many American high schools don’t bother discussing and you would be hard pressed for time to take in college, namely cultures that aren’t part of the White Male Narrative we all received. There’s the dispelling of myths which is my favorite part.

My only complaint is the podcast’s growing duration. Being a completist, I started at the beginning (June 2008) last year and managed to get caught up. (Currently, I let a few accumulate then do a little binge listening while doing bills or driving.) The initial episodes were a few minutes. Just enough to let the hosts make their point regarding the subject matter. Then they began to grow longer. Ten, 15 and 20 minutes. Now they average half an hour due to a couple commercial plus with the conclusion of listener e-mail, I end listening there.

I still wholeheartedly endorse SYMiHC. It has broadened my horizons, not like I was disinterested when the subject involved minorities, the problem was finding a starting point. Just like the time I attended Marquette in the Eighties, there was a big stink over the White majority not caring about courses covering namely African history. The truth was much more complicated. Firstly, the majority regardless of ethnicity hated taken History classes. Secondly, all the students who loved History (especially the History majors) said the university lacked any professors qualified to teach the subject. Too bad the podcast didn’t exist then.

Check it out. Go through the past episodes to find what piques your interest. I guarantee you’ll be amused as well as educated.

My rebuttal to an overshared picture or “selfie”

theyliveattheoscarsI’m with Brian Posehn when he said last week that foodie is just a douche term, I would say it’s the same for selfie. I’m sure they’re all nice people in person but I couldn’t give two shits about the Oscars®. The most pretentious movie to be released between December and January often wins and it’s just a multi-hour circle jerk of the industry congratulating itself.

Whoever did this GIF and modification, I applaud you! It was way better than the Simpson version.

Baby please leave the biker…

playmobilbiker…leave the biker, break his heart.”
– Fountains of Wayne, 1996

The new 2014 lines are out and here’s one I couldn’t resist getting. A co-worker who originates from Germany (home of Playmobil) said the motorcycle is inaccurate because the engine element sticking out is a BMW thing when choppers tend to be Harleys. It’s still pretty cool.

This year’s piece of Austin to die, Toy Joy

Twenty years ago, I recall Doc took me by this place within my first couple months in Austin along with Amy’s Ice Cream and Dragon’s Lair. It is (or was) a great store to buy little items for parties, trophies for co-workers, unusual toys from abroad and current fads (Doctor Who, Star Trek). I scored an Elvis version of Monopoly for a friend one Christmas; before customized Monopoly games were done to death.

When my brother-in-law’s family lived near Hyde Park, we’d try to make a quick excursion in there. We also took my cousin Dana last Spring.

The move to downtown is probably what killed them. If the real estate north of the Drag was ridiculous, being near City Hall was probably a Hail Mary pass attempt to save the beloved local shop.

One more step toward becoming a shithole, soul-less city like Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

A great interactive demo of the Solar System’s scale

The BBC once again demonstrating its superiority over America’s so-called news organizations with this cool page showing you the scale of just the Solar System. There are benchmarks along the way pointing out humanity’s accomplishments and well-known celestial objects. I can’t wait until New Horizons gets to Pluto, then we’ll receive our first glimpse of the Kuiper Belt. Then what lies beyond…

New podcasts I’m hooked on #2

Before I give a ranting endorsement I urge you to first, support your local comic book and/or game store by finding out if they do their own podcast. Not everyone can drop by every week like I can to chew the fat with the staff you’ve grown to know over a decade.

As a quick aside, what I get to enjoy reminds me of what my grandfather would do whenever he went to the hardware section at Sears; he was a precursor to Hank Hill.

Back to the point!

My nearby comic book and game shop is Rogues Gallery. Located in Round Rock it was formerly Dragon’s Lair North but DL’s owner sold it to his staff there, probably as a gift or nice gesture. It couldn’t have been a move to cut his losses because RG has been successful for years. Recently they got into the podcasting realm. Sure many say its crowded yet I don’t care. A terrestrial-based radio show for my store or those aligned with them is unrealistic despite AM/FM being the realm of the old farts who rammed the Beatles down my throat in the Eighties. I love the Roguecast. It demonstrates the power of podcasting by how well Randy, Nick, Teela, David and Chelsea can cater to their patrons with a civil discussion about the merits of Firefly, Pacific RimDoctor Who, Marvel, DC, Image, D&D’s alternatives and numerous board games. They even mention non-geek programs like HBO’s The Newsroom and Disney’s Frozen. As they say at the opening, Pop Culture on the radar.

I have my differences over some topics with the hosts. None are deal breakers, it’s opinion and more often the gang has convinced me to check out the lesser-known comic books they sell: Afterlife with Archie (yes, the Archie gang is caught in the Zombie Apocalypse), Velvet (Awesome spy-thriller action set in the Seventies), Sex Criminals (don’t let the title fool you, it’s pretty intelligent) and Mythic Adventures for Pathfinder.

OK, their marketing ploy is working on my weak mind! I don’t feel that way though. It’s more like being the fly on the wall of a conversation I wish I were participating in, chewing the fat over the junk I enjoy! Besides, sometimes a verbal review is more effective of conveying its point than in print or electrons. The gang also wouldn’t endorse a product they don’t like.

Check them out here if your local comic and hobby store doesn’t have its own podcast.

Green Lantern 2

greenlantern2outerHow I thank the Guardians of OA that Converse made another pair to represent the Emerald Knight! It was a tad embarrassing to have just the terrible movie version in my collection. These shoes have some nice touches as you’ll see below. Again, a big thanks to Sara for making sure the order was trouble free.

The more famous stock image I've seen for years.

Black Sabbath

blacksabbathchucks

The cover’s famous blurred photo

These customized Chucks were released in conjunction with the band’s remastered Ozzy-period catalog. Heavy Metal isn’t necessarily my first choice of music, especially with the genre being littered by numerous hair bands but I still have a liking for the foundational acts or key records. Sabbath falls into the latter since Paranoid is their only strong record; it has the three hits most know, obviously “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “War Pigs/Luke’s Wall.” However, I will concede to any dedicated Metalhead capable of defending the other few albums before Dio replaced Ozzy.

The color stitched on the back made these shoes a must have.

The colored stitched album title on the back made these shoes a must have.

Regardless of the band’s past or current work, I’m always out to add more rock n’ roll-based Chucks to my collection. Hell, I have Gorillaz and I know even fewer of their tunes.

blacksabbathtongueI need to get new laces for these. I thought the logo was more on the pink side. Nope, they’re closer to purple. They just look too damn cool even with the black and white included in the box.

Lastly, a big special thank you to my friend Sara from the Converse Store! She made sure this order shipped on time and without any difficulty.

Next up? No signs of any new bands getting their names immortalized on iconic shoes. I wish they’d do more late Sevenites/early Eighties New Waves acts like Duran Duran.

Brian Posehn 2

brianposehn2One of my favorite comedians, voice actors and all around uber nerd graced Austin with his last week. Brian did not disappoint. He performed mostly new material as he sprinkled a few bits from The Fartist into the evening. Some favorite bits: ripping on hipsters whining when they run out of mustache wax, auto-corrected messages from his wife and why he’s on Canada’s shit list.

After the show you can see my friend John and I got a little face time. We gave him a $100 donation to put toward the podcast Nerd Poker which I eventually get around to writing about. Hence why I wore my DM shirt. I also broke out my new Black Sabbath Chucks to show him. I had been putting off wearing them just for Brian’s stand-up.

Brian’s opener was fantastic too. Ngaio Bealum who was Brian’s former roommate back in the early Nineties when they were getting started. Ngaio’s comedy was in the same vein as Brian’s so I’ve put his album on my wish list via iTunes, physical media is harder to attain with comedy records.

Now John and I will be awaiting an upcoming episode to listen for a shout out from the Nerd Poker gang. To show our nerdiness, we put our favorite D&D PCs on the envelope.

I know you may read my site and plug numerous comedians you probably don’t recognize. If you have the chance to see Brian Posehn, take it. He caters to us who dig Star Wars, Heavy Metal (both music and the comic), video games, D&D and life in general.

Another step toward cyberizing the house!

ourNeSTWe finally got around to installing this cool device you may have heard of, namely a few weeks ago when Google acquired them. A couple power companies will give it to you for free if you want one; Austin Energy is a rebate and Green Mountain does this with a two-year contract. Our procrastinating was driving by when we’d turn off the power in the living room. Luckily, I think we installed the new thermostat in an hour.

I set up the account, downloaded the mobile app (Somara needs to follow suit) and attempted an estimated schedule for a week. Now will come the learning curve nest experiences to find ways to be more efficient.

Our digital thermostat was a faithful friend for over 12 years but nest is the next step to give the lousy, overtaxed Texas power grid a break.

Happy Texas Independence Day

A Canadian acquaintance brought this up from the Independence Movement’s declaration against the Mexican Government in 1836.

“…unless a people are educated and enlightened, it is idle to expect the continuance of civil liberty, or the capacity for self government.”

Fast forward to now and I guess Sam Houston, David Burnet and the other mostly Anglo delegates were being ironic given this state’s frequent everyone for themselves attitude, a core tenant of Shruggalos, Teabaggers and Country Club Republicans.

We really need another independence day in critical thinking since my adopted state’s upcoming primary will determine the winners in critical positions: US Senate, the House, the Texas Legislature (an international embarrassment), statewide spots with 19th Century-esque names (Railroad Commissoner? What railroad?), Lt. Governor and Governor (the latter are elected separately here). Sure Texas will inevitably flip back to Democratic but the Republicans will continue their scorched-earth policies before they’re kicked out. They did this to my old home state and California. I’m not saying the Democrats are without sin; I wouldn’t piss on Rahm Emmanuel, John Corzine, Diane Feinstein or DINOs like them if they were on fire. Yet few sane people can support the Texas GOP and their successful ongoing campaign against reality. It has caused Wendy Davis, this term’s sacrificial Democratic lamb, to “move to the center” already about guns and the issue which put her in the spotlight to begin with, reproductive choice. Wendy is certainly no Ann Richards. Ann would’ve hit the dauphin Greg Abbott back with a backspin on the numerous issues he will screw over half the state’s population on. “Moving to the center” is just Orwellian for conceding to the Right hoping it’ll be enough to neutralize the Far Right. The Democrats having given so much ground over the last 30 years they’ve proven Harry Truman’s old maxim, “If you give a man a choice between voting for a Republican and a Republican. He’ll always vote Republican.”

With all the idiots around here showing off “secede” bumper stickers on their gas guzzlers, maybe Austin should consider the same, become the new West Berlin. Besides, if Austin is such a horrible bastion of Socialists, Hippies and the godless, why do we have lower unemployment, a better quality of life and numerous assholes of all stripes are moving here every day? Nevermind what a cesspool many states the Republicans are completely in charge of receive more Federal welfare to function: the Deep South and the Sparse West.

I’ll close with this image I created of the GOP’s next governor. Don’t let the wheelchair fool you, Abbott is the anti-FDR and evil version of Professor X. Whovians will recognize the villain I’ve patterned him after.
