1863: The Gettysburg Address

Abraham Lincoln gave one of his most memorable speeches on this day. It is rather weird that the president’s invitation to the cemetery’s dedication was an afterthought. Sure, he wasn’t terribly popular due to the (American) Civil War dragging out into its third year; it would manifest as some rather nasty opposition at home from his inner circle (Chase and McClellan).

I think Lincoln took some major chances with the speech. Many in the North weren’t very concerned about the slaves, others were willing to make peace with the Confederacy and few knew the war had hit a turning point four months earlier. Since running for the presidency, Lincoln had been rather reluctant to discuss slavery as a political issue. Now he risked his political fortunes by saying why the 45,000 casualties didn’t suffer in vain. Certain “D minus” students of History try to make similar comparisons with the worst US-president in History justifying his invasion of Iraq, hence the “D minus” label for Busheviks.

Being a Yankee in Texas makes the event’s anniversary a source of pride, especially when hearing the racist prattling of the Neo-Confederates I live amongst. They keep forgetting they lost and they worship the banner of General Lee’s traitorous army. I see this practically every day with their bigoted “Impeach Obama” bumper stickers, “Keep Texas Red” banners and the antics of the Young Conservatives.

It’s become ironic how the first Republican president is now someone the modern GOP calls a dictator, “Socialist” and/or “Communist.”

Lost weekend thanks to sinuses

It wasn’t a complete wash, we did manage to see the new Thor flick and complete our cat sitting duties in a timely fashion. Plus I had a FaceTime conversation with the Gordons in New York.

Meanwhile, it’s several netti pots a day to rinse out my sinuses. At least the rest of me feels fine.

Welcome Ben!

benderr0Yesterday was a huge joyous occasion, the awaited arrival of the Derrs’ first child (is first appropriate since I have no idea how many kids are planned or this guy will be an Only). Doesn’t matter in the end because Somara and I are stoked! Jeremy has been our friend for over 13 years and Kristin was a slam dunk right away. Ergo, Ben will be a hit with us. Poor kid will be surrounded by an army of nerdy adults! As per Patton Oswalt’s fear with his children, they’ll grow up to be bullies and start by throwing daddy’s space marine rifle replica on the roof.

The Derrs will be in the hospital for a couple more days as Kristin recovers. Then let the adventures in parenting begin!

I’ll warn everyone up front, be prepped for funny pictures with this guy. Most people in the Derrs’ social circle bought the kid humorous wardrobe items.

Happy birthday Cannon and off to Qatar he goes

I know he’s my youngest nephew but I can’t recall if he’s the youngest kid in the bunch. I do know it’s his birthday. What an odd treat, going on a 15-hour flight to live in Qatar. As I stated before, my brother-in-law got the gig to help build a new emergency training center. Cannon and his two brothers are off to a helluva’ adventure for about five years, maybe 10, depends on where they choose to attend university afterwards, not likely the Middle East.

Before they left, I did get the big brother’s e-mail set up. I had to make a sub-account via my overall Uverse setup because Hunter couldn’t remember the password to his original gmail. He must be an odd teenager. Name a kid who can’t recall something vital like a password? Sure, kids forget important things like phone numbers, chores and their homework. They always know how to keep adults out of their affairs. In my experience with technical support, they’re often better at defeating the security barriers adults put up on color printers, Web proxies and game-blocking software.

It’s Cannon’s day and I want to close with that. I hope he has an enjoyable flight. He’s much braver than his uncle…I’m jelly after four hours in a plane, after 15, I think I would be ready for a strait-jacket. The next trick will be sending gifts. We have no idea how expensive shipping is and what the emirate allows. They’ve recently granted exemptions to bacon yet it’s heavily taxed.

Wallace Shawn is 70 today…INCONCEIVABLE!

A great comedic actor who will be best remembered as Vizzini celebrates his birthday. To a younger generation he’s the voice of Rex from Toy Story, to others the teacher Alicia Silverstone helps find love in Clueless (aka Emma of the Nineties).

I want to share several other films Wallace had memorable roles in that I want to share:

  • Gossip columnist Oiseau from a very funny art-house movie called The Moderns; it’s about the ex-patriates living in Paris around 1926.
  • A fire-and-brimstone Catholic priest from Heaven Help Us. Although a brief appearance, he gave an amusing speech about how the Church feared the Soviets during the early Sixties.
  • The Grand Negus Zek, the ruler of the Ferengi in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, I think the character fell in love with Quark’s mother in later episodes.

Farewell weekend for the Bridge-Aggie faction

Enjoying the Stars not blowing their lead over the Admirals.

Enjoying the Stars not blowing the lead v. the Admirals.

By Wednesday my three Aggie-based nephews will be on their way to live in Qatar for the next five, maybe 10 years. I hope it is going to be a cool adventure. I’m a bit jealous since learning Arabic can be advantageous.

So we took them to Pinballz to have a last Saturday of games and then wrapped up at a Stars game. I figured why not. It’s not like they’ll see ice again but then again, those wealthy Arabs spend money on odd things in my opinion. I think the UAE has an indoor ski resort.

Being a good, computer-literate uncle, I made sure Hunter (the oldest) had his MacBook prepared with a bitchin’ piece of software called Day One. It’s my hope he’ll keep a journal of sorts about his time in the Middle East.

hockeybrawl

I’m going to miss those three, especially now that they were getting old enough to understand and enjoy video games, D&D (their PCs will be integrated into my campaign as nice, helpful NPCs), rock shows, etc.

Back up after some backing up

In order to avoid a repeat of the $2000 data recovery bill from last year, I finally got around to taking the server offline to back it up in its entirety. Ugh, I hadn’t done it since June 2013. Not smart.

But it’s back and ready for more!

Happy 11th Radman & Kim!

Congratulations to my favorite couple in Phoenix even if they’re the only couple I know over there, I don’t count my in-laws.

Let’s see if their kids Owen and Kylie succeed at doing something special for them.

I scored an awesome card but it’s late as always.

Our “super” evening with the Austin Symphony Orchestra

batmobile89Tonight we check out a reading of Archer with the principle cast, hopefully they’ll be as funny as the show. I figure they’re also here because Fun Fun Fest kicks off this weekend.

Last month we attended the ASO for their performances of pieces based upon superhero films, usually the opening number. Wearing a costume was encouraged and this included various members in the orchestra. Seeing the kids dressed up as Batman or Wolverine is always amusing since they’re way into it. How I remember my Spider-Man obsession in early grade school.

I need to check out things like ASO more often. I had forgotten how exciting while simultaneously soothing a classical/symphonic performance is live.

ASO covered mostly expected numbers: Danny Elfman’s Batman and Spider-Man, thankfully John Williams’ “Superman March,” I would’ve felt gypped otherwise! Van Helsing was a stretch. There was X-Men 2, The Fantastic Four, Captain America and Supergirl. The cool surprises were the piano solo tune from The Incredible Hulk TV show, The Incredibles which has a Sixties spy vibe to it and “Ghostbusters” for the encore.

I hope ASO does this every October. The costume element really suits the music and gets kids to come out.

Next up? We’ll have to think it over some. Somara mentioned interest in Verdi or whatever. ASO is gonna’ have to wait until the car matters settle out.

Adios Blockbuster, a bittersweet farewell to the Eighties

The Inadequate and Underwhelming digital, Internet 2.0 era claimed another victim (officially) today. Not to wallow in schadenfreude but it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving company. I only wish they were still an albatross around Viacom’s neck, take that media empire down a few pegs.

For those under 30-35, before Blockbuster Video, America had scores of mom n’ pop stores since there was only one HBO and Showtime channel each and I recall it was pretty expensive to own a copy of a movie (this changed by the Nineties). Sure it sucked when the couple copies the store had of a particular feature were often checked out yet I don’t recall being too obsessed with wanting to see a flick that was in theaters within the last year; I could be wrong. There were numerous “older” things to check out because you wanted to get re-acquainted with it or you’d never seen it. Again, it was a crap shoot depending upon where you lived. Dinky town in North Dakota? Good luck. Near UW-M in Milwaukee, more art-house stuff and porno than Ah-nold action stuff.

Then Blockbuster exploded across the country in the late Eighties. By the decade’s end, practically everyone had a VCR and everybody craved content when they weren’t taping soaps. During the Summer of 1989, there was a franchise near my girlfriend’s apartment on Milwaukee’s east side. The masses thought it kicked ass thanks to it having 30 copies of 1988’s schlocky hit. They carried “oldies,” if they were mainstream. Slim pickings for foreign or controversial fare. Plus they rented games for my Nintendo. You quickly learned to stay away from Blockbusters during holiday stretches; families stormed them to find something to keep themselves entertained after the big meal.

I’m guilty of patronizing Blockbuster too. It was the McDonald’s of video rental. I just realized the loss of the more dedicated, daring places’ demise too late. Austin has endured better than many cities its size though: check out I Love Video and Vulcan Video, both sponsor events at Alamo Drafthouse Theaters.

I could blather and reminisce further over the many expeditions to Blockbuster in 1989 through early Aughts. I’ll just close with only one memory, the general sense of thrill Jose and I had whenever Phil drove us there during the Summer of 1989. Jose bought a new VCR (long story why) and he was generous enough to host with it.

Maybe Jose can regale us with his experiences. One comes to mind but I’ll let him tell it in his own words.

Our Honda is back…and front?

newbumperPractically 50 days to get all this body work done. Not due to the great shop (we’ve been there four times now, we’re practically family!). Not due to there being a shortage of parts. All because the jerk who hit us has dragged her ass with her insurance company. Our insurer has done all it can, namely footing as much of the bill they could plus I have a feeling they’ll be suing the hitter’s company for their money. Meanwhile, I dread the long, drawn-out stiffing we’ll be experiencing with the hitter. Sure the law is on our side and the judge will say she needs to pay but you can’t get blood from a stone. Let’s see. I want to be optimistic yet I think we’re going to be screwed on getting back what we’re owed on this: the deductible we had to pay and the rental cars. In our defense, we pushed for cheap rentals, nothing crazy.

It’s great to have the Honda back though.

Next step, test drives to check for anything the dealership may need to fix in the mechanical/electronic sections. I do recall the gas tank’s ballast being inaccurate after the accident.

Not bad, I got nine out of 10. I didn’t expect to ace it since this is a British news site. Let me know what your score is.

An endangered species

payphoneI spotted one of these on our recent vacation because I don’t recall seeing any around Austin anymore. They probably have them in Las Vegas due to international calls on a cell phone being ridiculously overpriced.

RIP: Marcia Wallace

chalkboardfarewell

Marcia’s passing must’ve slipped through while I was out sick last week because her B-list character on The Simpsons was critical to its success. The show just won’t be the same without her voice for the long-suffering Mrs. Krabappel. I haven’t kept up with the cartoon for years due to us not having cable or going through the trouble to watch terrestrial-based TV. However, I was aware of the Ned Flanders development after Edna had finally tired of non-committal Seymour Skinner. Such a shame. I’m going to really miss that voice.

Being a product of the Seventies and Eighties, I was long familiar with Marcia through The Bob Newhart Show; everyone has learned that she played the receptionist for Dr. Bob and Dr. Jerry thanks to Nick at Night and syndication. I even saw a couple episodes of the short-lived That’s My Bush! with her as the wise-cracking maid to the clueless George W. Bush. I think Marcia also did additional voice work for numerous commercials and cartoons, she had a distinctive voice.

I’m glad Al Jean and the gang were able to give Marcia/Mrs. K a heart-warming nod. She now joins the well-loved Phil Hartman, Doris Grau and Ron Taylor.

Relatively “old” Buzzfeed article on Austin needing some clarity

Let me give a quick clarification on this article since its author is full of crap, like anyone who visits my city and thinks she has it down after spending a week at SXSW.

  1. Tacos, yes. Tacodeli is OK, only recently have I discovered Torchy’s. I need to eat more of the latter to have a strong opinion. So far their GM at 620 was very helpful with a recent work-related catering gig.
  2. I’m not a dog person.
  3. Free outdoor shows, sometimes like SXSW but not Blues on the Green.
  4. I haven’t practiced yoga in years and certainly not at Black Swan, I just followed my wife’s DVD and I know a legit instructor.
  5. See 4.
  6. See 4 and 2.
  7. I have no love for Whole Paycheck Foods, especially its Shruggalo CEO John Mackey who ignorantly calls the ACA Fascism.
  8. Depends.
  9. See 8.
  10. In 20 years of living here, I’ve never really done this on a real river, just the mechanical ones and in other cities.
  11. Guilty.
  12. Very guilty and I own that shirt too. The reason why…because we don’t need more assholes with a John Mackey mindset living here which is what Austin is getting flooded with, namely deadbeat, selfish GOP refugees from Arizona, California and Florida. They mostly bitch about Austin being weird.
  13. I lived in Wisconsin for five years, of course I like cheese.
  14. Never been in one.
  15. Yes but Austin has scores of mediocre BBQ. It does compensate for the unreliable pizza and non-existent delis.
  16. Yes, yet I’m not keen on MPT anymore, it’s rather lazy comedy on most days, the other special events are better.
  17. Local yes; organic has a slippery definition and 7 contributes to the problem; vegan? You gotta’ be kidding me after listing 15.
  18. Hell yes. Each bat eats around 600 bugs a night, namely mosquitos. The horrible smell under certain bridges is worth what they do.
  19. No opinion.
  20. Never been there, I know of it; Rainey is in South Austin, I live in the Northeast. Mike Judge used it for King of the Hill, it’s where Hank lives.
  21. Yes, haven’t been there in years though.
  22. Absolutely, I do need to attend more stuff, especially if I don’t want the hypocritical Greg Abbott to be governor.
  23. The show yes, the Coachella wannabe mess we have every Fall, HELL NO.
  24. No, I’m not a good swimmer.
  25. He seems OK.
  26. Yes, I’ve posted some on my site.
  27. Yes, but not Bob Schneider, he’s rather dull and an asshole. I prefer Shawn Colvin, Not in the Face, Quiet Company, Toni Price (who may have moved back), the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Black & White Years, the Reivers, the Zoltars and the Octopus Project.
  28. Sure, most often they’re the opener for a nationally touring act.
  29. Yes, but it has the same pitfalls as 15.
  30. No. The ones I endorse: Lucy in Disguise and the Continental Club. I’m not familiar with others because SoCo is a nuisance to navigate/park on.
  31. Yes.
  32. No. Heresy due to football being the state religion.
  33. Yes, yet I’m more modest in my expression. I have also encountered thong-wearing bicycle guy and saw Leslie from a distance.
  34. I agree there but it’s disappearing thanks to overdevelopment, greed from outside one-percenters buying everything up and climate change.
  35. My additional reason why I call Austin home that the author didn’t list…regardless of the political persuasion here, a larger population at large is better educated than other areas I’ve lived in. I left my Midwestern region for intellectual reasons, not economic. Where I resided in Central Illinois was a heavy GOP bastion in a (now) Blue state. A college degree was a liability, not an advantage. Outside Chicago, Illinois is mostly northern Kentucky while Austin is the anti-Texas inside Texas.
