Super BFFs!

SuperbffshirtCo-worker and friend Aaron has an older daughter who is just the coolest. She is a sweet, thoughtful person who loves superheroes and ninjas! So when I spotted this shirt at Target, I had to just buy it. If DC Comics can’t make it in my size, then I will have to enjoy the design vicariously through her. The face is cropped out to protect her privacy but trust me, she is smiling because she digs it.

Textbook publishers reject mythology and bunk

This great piece of news was probably ignored due to the shutdown and it’s a huge relief since I live in Texas. The Christian Dominionists on the SBOE may finally realize that this state’s size and rising star will prevent them from promoting their crap. I can only hope the same with history books yet I doubt it, those materials are flawed across the spectrum.

Science on the other hand is solidly defined on what is true. My favorite rebuttal to their weaselly argument about evolution being only a “theory” (wrong connotation) is to spin it back with gravity’s theoretical status. Maybe they’ll give me a demonstration of flying.

Religion is fine and dandy as a personal matter. These people need to relax. Science isn’t against, nor concerned about their spirituality. Evolution doesn’t negate the validity of treating other people nicely, a tenant of Christianity they often don’t emulate.

Let’s see what happens next. Will the era we live in be remembered as the comeback toward greater knowledge or as I fear, The Stupid Ages.

This shirt is the bane of the Dayman!

nightmancomethA wearable litmus test to see which people you encounter are fans of America’s favorite…ok, Basic Cable’s…sociopathic quintet. Since Stern and Jersey Jack will never build an It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia pinball machine (don’t get me started, I already have rules in mind for it), the shirt will have to do. Thank you Busted Tees! I had a virtual coupon so I didn’t have to pay the troll toll to get it!

Vegas 2013: Day Six, Popovich’s animal circus

Monday took the slow approach as the centerpiece to our day was mid-afternoon at PH. We arrived relatively early, went our own separate ways for an hour to kill time; I wanted to leave my card with the nice person we met at the Apple Store in CP on day one. Then I made Jose’s losing bet on the Rangers winning the wild-card tie breaker against the Devil Rays. I think Somara went shopping for snacks she likes.

The timeshare people set up our tickets to see Popovich’s Animal Circus. The box office let us upgrade to the front row for a mere $20! I’m glad we did.

How was the show? Quite memorable from many angles and heartwarming to see all those cats, dogs, and other abandoned pets gain new leases on life as performers. Popovich isn’t exclusively skits involving animals doing tricks, he does numerous acrobatic and juggling bits. It brought back memories of watching Bozo on WGN when I was a little kid; in the Seventies, Bozo was an hour and usually an “old-timey” circus act would get about 10 minutes on the show in the second half.

Afterwards it was an early dinner at PH’s buffet. The food the place served was a huge improvement from when we ate there 10 years ago under the Aladdin banner yet the name remained the same…the Spice Market.

We picked up where we left off at the Pinball Hall of Fame, namely the machine below which gave my brother and me nightmares whenever we saw it at Zayres.

It's the pink giant!

It’s the pink giant! Run away Herbie!

Nightmares? Yes. As you can see from the artwork, we didn’t understand that it was a collage and/or the perspective. In my four-to-five-year-old mind the guy on the right was a giant scaring the hell out of the lady below while the man is trying to fix the car. I guess the couple were trying to escape a doomed city but the pink giant was going to harm them. On another day, we overheard a couple college students playing a driving game next to it and one yelled the name Herbie. This led to our assumption about the heavy character running away from a stinging insect on the driving game to have the said name. Our parents must’ve been concerned over the weird fear we developed so Mom made an illustrated storybook which led to Herbie becoming friends with the misunderstood pink giant. I sent the above picture to Brian. He had no memory of the childhood “ordeal.”

We wrapped early in preparation for the next morning’s massages.

I tend to watch copious amounts of TV while in vacation too. I shouldn’t, all the commercial breaks gets on my nerves.

Stars roll on in three-peat weekend

Tonight our Stars roll back into action against their other rival, the OKC Barons. We won’t be attending due to other social/household obligations. However, last weekend they amazed us by wracking up a six-point weekend with 18 goals and a hat trick.

All I know about the Friday game in SA is they won, 3-1. Making their losing streak just a game. I don’t count OT losses since we get a point. To me, a real loss leaves you empty handed or knocks you out of the playoffs.

There must’ve been some ugly, unresolved tension because the Saturday re-match dragged out near the end with numerous fights. The silver lining was backup goalie Josh Robinson’s AHL debut with  6-0 shutout.

Sunday boded badly. The Stars were back on the ice in less than 20 hours to face the Heat, another team they tend to get into fisticuffs with. It was looking sad as the Heat pulled ahead 3-1. Then my team pulled together, tied the game and left the opposition in the dust, 9-3. The Heat’s coach kept the poor rookie goalie in the net as his suffering continued. Meanwhile I witnessed my first live hat trick! It was worth losing a hat to Colton Sceviour’s spectacular scoring feat. Travis Morin kept up his point streak to earn the weekly award from the AHL.

It’s early. I won’t be preparing to have my photo with the Calder Cup until I see how the injuries accumulate by February.

The real horror is the near miss from last year!

It's as lifeless as he is in real life!

It’s as lifeless as he is in real life!

The election was last year so I guess Walgreens was stuck with leftovers to dump or their executives think the Romney cook book will be a big seller. I don’t know about the latter’s success when every other recipe contains the same awful-tasting ingredient as the Mittster’s business strategies…bullshit.

Italian #24: Alexandra Guarnaschelli

Alex is the second woman to earn the title Iron Chef (after Cat Cora) but the first to win via competition (see the show The Next Iron Chef). She is also a host on Chopped.

I recently learned about Alex courtesy of Marc Maron’s podcast. An only child and raised in Manhattan, her mother was a cookbook editor so food was in the cards. According to the interview with Maron, Alex found her calling after college which entailed working up the ranks in Europe before returning to America.

Before becoming a respected chef in her own right, Alex was often a sous-chef assisting other Iron Chefs on TV. I’m glad she got a chance. Many chefs are men and for some reason Rachel Ray gets all the press and has no formal training, according to my wife. I’m not saying the fancy piece of paper or time in the school of hard knocks means instant credibility. If Rachel Ray gets people fired up over cooking, eating and whatnot, great. However, what Madame Guarnaschelli does has more passion, greater sincerity and the journey was a major element. Not having a line of cheap, Chinese-made dishes endorsed by the “celebrity.”

This year was a great year for Alex, her first book got released this Spring and her first shot as executive chef at Butter is undergoing renovations. Now I have another reason to visit New York on my own dime besides seeing a Broadway show!

RIP: Lou Scheimer

If Hanna-Barbera were the kings of Saturday morning cartoons, then I could easily argue that Lou Scheimer and his production company Filmation were the dukes. The name may not ring a bell but the barrage of animated shows and some live action will:

  • Star Trek
  • Archie
  • The Groovie Ghoulies
  • Flash Gordon
  • Batman and Robin (not the Superfriends though)
  • Tarzan
  • The Secret Adventures of Waldo Kitty
  • Zorro
  • Space Academy
  • Jason of Star Command
  • The Lone Ranger
  • Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids
  • The Original Ghostbusters
  • He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

The last one probably nailed it for most people’s memories.

You could usually tell which programs were Filmation because of the rotoscoping (gave some actions sequences a creepy, clumsiness), very limited movement at other times, cheap-ass closeups (watch Star Trek on Netflix to see my point) to save on cel drawings and the same “tension” music through all productions. Being a kid, I wasn’t picky. The subject matters were more important. Oh, the circling names in the opening credits was another trademarked sign.

From the obit, I learned he did some voices, namely Bat-Mite and Dumb Donald. Did it save money? Probably yet cartoons weren’t part of SAG, WGA, etc until The Simpsons became a cash cow so it couldn’t have been much.

Despite Filmation being deemed a lesser animator, Scheimer’s company gave some well-respected writers their first gigs…Sam Simon and J. Michael Straczynski cut their teeth writing scripts and/or storyboards.

Back from a rather awesome, never-a-dull-moment weekend

Didn’t mean to go all MIA after recuperating from my latest attack, the weekend kicked off with work having its usual, immediate crises but I have some additional help with three excellent Tier Two guys moved to the team. They’re so good, I asked my new (since August) boss Eddie, how did he manage to get dealt such a great hand?

Afterwards our weekend was no-stop running around catching fun events we had scheduled since Summer…more on them later.

My point? I just want you few readers to know, I’m fine, life is better and get ready for an onslaught of overdue things, namely the last three days of Las Vegas.

Now let’s see some comments!

Awesome, funky boots!

awesomebootsThe picture just says it all! These boots and its picture are courtesy of a new co-worker who shares my love of shoes. Unfortunately, the store only makes the gear for ladies. What’s a heterosexual man supposed to do?

Italian #23: Ernesto Teodoro Moneta

With all the news about the Americans winning the Nobel prize for economics, I decided to see how Italy has done since the honors were established over a century ago. Of all the categories, Peace remains my favorite despite it being rather tainted by past recipients because they were questionable (Gore) or outright Orwellian (Kissenger, every Israelian PM). The man in the title is Italy’s only recipient and sadly he fell into the same company of hypocrites near the end of his life.

But let me start at the beginning…

Moneta was born in 1833 to an aristocratic-in-name only family (they had very little money). When he was 15, Moneta participated in the brief war against Austria which would become the start of his long military career devoted to fighting for Italian Unification. Obviously he campaigned along with the movement’s primary hero Garibaldi but he was more loyal to fellow Milanese General Giuseppe Sirtori to the end.

Disillusioned about war and/or the movement, Moneta retired to civilian life around 1866 to write/edit in Il Secolo (The Century) where he pushed for reforms at all levels of Italian life: the army, the Church, technology, etc. The major topic he promoted though was peace while being hyper-nationalist. Seems like a contradiction due to the latter being a major motivator with wars breaking out. Resolving differences by peaceful means did become his calling card through multiple International Peace Conferences: preventing disputes’ transformations into armed conflicts, conventions on war and laying down the groundwork for the future League of Nations and eventually the UN.

Thus he was co-awarded the 1907 Nobel Peace Prize with France’s Louis Renault.

The credibility the prize gave him evaporated during WWI when Moneta endorsed Italy entering the war because his hate of Austria-Hungary trumped his love of peace.

And yet people criticize the recipients of today.

Italian #22: Sofonisba Anguissola

When someone mentions Renaissance-era artists, the most common names listed off tend to be Italian…and male: Michelangleo, da Vinci, Titian, Raphael, Donatello, Botticelli; those are the ones I easily recognize. However, one woman did manage to stand out in what appears to be an Italian sausage party, Sofonisba Anguissola.

Born the eldest daughter of northern aristocrats in 1532, Sofonisba’s potential was recognized and harnessed early thanks to her social status. Due to her gender and the backlash against women the era ushered, she was only tutored to draw, sketch or paint portraits. The art we often associate with the period (pictures with partial/full nudity, historical pieces, Biblical illustrations or a mix of previous three) were off limits. It was inappropriate for women to view nude models (either gender), let alone paint them. Plus Thomas Aquinas’ philosophical crap said females were inferior. Portraits were all Sofonisba was left with.

At least she turned this limitation to her advantage, by the time Sofonisba Anguissola died at 92-93, she was one of the greatest portrait painters of her generation and completed more self-portraits until Rembrandt. Her career also entailed correspondence with Michelangelo, frequent gigs in the royal court of Spain and before she passed, a visit by a Flemish fan named Van Dyck seeking advice.

If you do a search for her name via Google, you can easily see images of Sofonisba’s work and distinctive style, especially with the eyes. Owning a painting by her is more than an investment too, many Europeans consider it a sign of prestige.

Happy Birthday Helen, pronounced ‘HULL-en’

Right after Columbus Day is the next major holiday of the month…Helen’s birthday! You were thinking Halloween right? If I didn’t know her, I would’ve voted for Carrie Fisher’s birthday instead because I always want to remember the actress/author for wearing that Jabba-slave outfit so well when I was a teenager.

However, let’s get back to the birthday lady. We had a nice phone call over Saturday evening. Helen’s family celebrated some matters and there were additional plans on Sunday, namely a pedicure.

Twenty years ago was a different matter. Helen, her new husband (really, her now official husband), Julie and I got together in Milwaukee to celebrate the ladies’ birthdays, they’re the same day. Julie was living on the cooler east side so we got to crash at her apartment. After rendezvousing at Julie’s joint, we set out for dinner. Julie had to make a quick stop before we could get on with the evening. The ‘quick stop’ turned out to be a surprise party. I remember Helen being a tad pissed because she didn’t know any of the people, I think they were mostly friends Julie grew up with and/or made while working at her current career (I want to say social worker, I may be wrong). Paul seemed like, feh, let’s give it 10 minutes while we drink their beer. I thought, well, I’m kind of siding with Helen but we’re Julie’s guests, it would be wise to just go with the flow. If the parties blows, we can find a polite way to duck out eventually. Plus I felt somewhat insecure. These attendees were the hipper east-siders of Milwaukee which usually meant the UW-M crowd, not the uptight Marquette/MSOE bunch. Believe me, what was ‘hip’ in Milwaukee would be fairly lame/conservative in the larger cities. But weed was probably in the cards thanks to it being the early Nineties and Gen-X liking crappy bands such as House of Pain and Cypress Hill.

Thankfully it went more smoothly. Julie’s hosts were very nice people. To me it was a relief to be amongst a crowd that didn’t mind thinking or engaging in more polite conversation. Living downstate in Central IL was depressing. The highlight, catching up to Paul at the food table and us breaking into the This is Spinal Tap sandwich tray bit. There was a cool guy with a jester hat that reversed itself into a beret. He was also generous enough to tell me where I could get one, at Merry-Go-Round (checking Google if they still exist…no, they bit the dust in 1996 and they gobbled up Chess King, hmm).

Enough about me, me, me.

Helen had a pleasant evening. The remainder of the weekend went to the four of us as we ate, drank and reminisced. Rather funny to look back on times which were only three-to-five years earlier then.

Wish Helen a nice birthday by whatever means you want to use. May 2013 be as memorable and as cool as 1993 was. I recall the soundtrack of 20 years ago isn’t embarrassing.

I think October is the cruelest month

Fall recently came to Austin which then led to me getting sick followed by the anxiety/panic attacks over-the-counter medicine causes. It’s a crappy situation because not taking the medication usually prolongs the illness. However, maybe I should’ve toughed it out.

This October is panning out to being a rather sad time. Over a year ago I had to put Molly to sleep as cancer chipped away at her. I’m still bummed about Ben’s sudden departure. Other sad memories have cropped up too. The intransigence of the Teabaggers in DC isn’t helping…and if you buy into the false equivalence the SCLM spouts off, go back to watching Faux News and kiss my grits.

Some days it can be pretty hard to go out into the world to face what are really mundane, pathetic First World Problems especially when there’s at least a billion people who have it harder than I ever will.

Hang in there. I know I will as I try to dig out, catch up and put the pieces back together in enlightening you all about Italians who aren’t mobsters, models and pop stars.

Stars wow us in season opener (again)

Last night was an awesome beginning to the Star’s fifth anniversary as our team and for the Austin area having AHL-level hockey for the first time. I don’t think we’ve even been part of stronger, more-recognized leagues like the IHL or ECHL.

No matter, we kicked Chicago’s ass 4-1. The shutout for Jack Campbell would’ve been sweeter but all the goals coming from three of the four uber-vets rocked! My definition of uber-vets = the four players who’ve been with us since the inaugural 2009-10 season. They would be in alpha order: Maxime Fortunus, Travis Morin, Colton Sceviour and Francis Wathier. There are some returning faces and new guys amongst the team. Others I’m sad to see go to Dallas or worse, rivals! If it got these players to the NHL, then I’m behind them 100 percent, especially our beloved enforcer Luke Gazdic…stolen away through waivers to the Edmonton Oilers. Luke went on to score a goal in his debut too. He isn’t getting much ice time so the painful part will be seeing him in a Barons jersey later this season.

Back to last evening.

My Stars were mostly firing on all cylinders. There were a couple occasions they let the Wolves stay on the attack too long yet the blue liners did a better job keeping the number of shots down on Campbell. Now can we maintain this level of play for about 60 games? We’ll see. Dallas definitely looks younger as I glanced over who made the cut, pretty nice, about six guys from last year. I thought the officiating was a tad oblivious, the ref only started calling trips near the end. His “goal” gesture was weird when the Stars shoved the puck under the net from behind as well, I think a Wolf lifted it up first.

The Chicago Wolves’ roster was changed over due to them changing their affiliation to the Blues, anathema to all parties involved. I didn’t recognize any St. Louis or Peoria names, the Vancouver players moved to Utica, NY to have delicious steamed hams. The Blues’ logo isn’t on the Wolves’ uniforms was another unusual factor. The colors may not match but San Antonio has something to show they’re tied to the Panthers or at least they did with the Coyotes. I am looking forward to seeing the Wolves come back because Christian Hanson is on their roster. For Slapshot! fans, yes, it’s Dave Hanson’s son.

On to see the Stars play a rare Sunday afternoon game, hoping for a two-peat!
