It will be a boy!

What the sonogram showed!

What the sonogram showed!

Our friends Kristin and Jeremy got the results from their sonogram a few days ago. As the headline states, the baby due in November will be male. Obviously Somara and I are gathering up ideas on clothes, toys, etc. for them. They’re into similar things so we know whatever we give has a 99.999% chance of success.

They’ve also got the boy’s name picked out. Benjamin. I will leave out his middle name for security purposes, computer thieves latch on to anything. A decent choice, Hebrew, means “son of the right hand.” At least it’s real, doesn’t sound pretentious or a brand of cigarettes.

Here’s the clincher. Their surname is Derr. Yes, you guessed it. Kristin and Jeremy’s son will be known as Ben Derr. I doubt the kid will be tormented like Ima Hogg, Christian Love (son of Mike Love from the Beach Boys) or Somara’s originally proposed name Brook Lynn Bridge; the mother-in-law wisely vetoed that.

Gift number one to the Derrs is this great sketch by local artist Yehudi Mercado of a baby Bender. More will be coming. I promise, not everything will be prankish or Futurama specific.

These finally arrived!

doctorwhostampsThis November will mark the 50th anniversary of the BBC’s Doctor Who TV series. To celebrate, the Royal Post (the UK’s USPS) issued these really bitchin’ stamps with the faces of all 11 actors. Sadly, the first three passed away and Peter Cushing doesn’t get to be amongst them; he played the Doctor in two movies during the Sixties when the UK was caught up in Dalekmania.

I’m not a diehard to be labelled a Whovian yet I can name all 11 people on these stamps. It seems to run in the Maggi DNA as I recently discovered my niece Rachel’s fandom (technically she is my cousin Matthew’s daughter); I scored her a nicer packaged set as a high-school graduation gift.

You too can get these through the Royal Post’s website even if you don’t reside in the UK.

Kill Playmo-Bill!

killbillThe katana came from a different random figure, a Chinese warrior. Despite the outfit and hair being the wrong colors, everyone gets the joke.

I originally thought this lady figure was an EMT worker but when put together her suitcase, I realized she’s a tourist. This Playmobil character is the first one I’ve ever seen with elbows, thus there was a clear idea where the arms connected to the torso.

Man of Steel: Rental

manofsteel

DC’s cornerstone and oldest character celebrated his 75th birthday, hence yet another reboot after the disappointing Superman Returns, not to mentions Superman III and IV, the latter being the punchline to this joke: What can kill Superman? Kryptonite? No, another sequel? Given the success of the Nolans’ revamped Batman flicks, the Time Warner media barony decided to push their luck. Never mind how overexposed Supes is through a decade of Smallville or the dull Lois & Clark. Movies launched a couple years after TV shows wind down don’t always succeed. See The X-FilesThe Last Airbender and Star Trek: Generations.

I really wanted to like this movie despite how much I love Richard Donner’s 1978 version. Rest assured, Zack Snyder failed to seduce me away from the 35-year-old classic. How I hate the word “classic” but for Superman, the noun is appropriate. My gripe is the whole post 9/11 destructiveness crap it mimics from terrible films (anything with Transformers in its title) and other hits (The Avengers). It’s tired. Plus all the prolonged fighting drags this out while trying to cover up the threadbare story.

I want to counter with the elements I liked. Steel does go with John Byrne’s take on the Kryptonians on how alien they are, namely their aversion to natural births. Kryptonian technology is advanced to the point of resembling magic yet it isn’t mysterious enough like Donner’s crystals, Snyder goes with liquid metal. Lastly, Superman’s logo is explained as a hieroglyph for the Kryptonian (or Kryptonese) word for “hope.”

What makes the movie not really worth paying $12 to see in 3-D?

  • Russell Crowe’s Jor-El is a borderline action hero too, he just can’t be an overweight scientist like Marlon Brando.
  • General Zod is a somewhat sympathetic character a la Darth Vader.
  • The Kryptonians have a fetish for HR Giger designs. Maybe they’re related to the Engineers from Prometheus?
  • Some crap science, namely how additional mass can come from nowhere.
  • I for one am rather tired of seeing Amy Adams in every other blockbuster. Her Lois Lane was blah.

The upcoming DVD on a flat TV will do fine. You can use the extra money to buy/rent/stream the complete Nineties series. Comic book characters are often better treated in the long, serial form.

Alamo Extras: All things Superman: clips from a terrible superdog serial, a Bollywood musical bit, a Bugs Bunny cartoon, George Reeves’ appearance on I Love Lucy, a news report of a guy in the Philippines who is too obsessed, the Max Fleischer cartoon, the scene of the tainted Superman in a bar from Superman III interspersed throughout.

Belated congrats to the Griffins!

Finally, for at least the first time in four season, a Western Conference team has won the Calder Cup! I would’ve preferred it to be my Stars but I am willing to settle for Detroit’s proxy because it wasn’t OKC or Tampa’s proxy.

Gotta’ state some good news after the Miami Douches won last evening.

Now that the AHL’s season is over, the shuffle can begin. Poor Peoria got bumped out again as Vancouver decided to form a new team in Utica, NY. Makes you wonder why there when there were rumors saying the Canucks wanted their farm team to be closer. They couldn’t get Calgary to budge on Abbotsford because the Flames’ financial losses are passed on to the taxpayers. Next stop, Seattle which could accommodate the WHL’s Thunderbirds and an AHL franchise; Calgary and Edmonton do this with NHL teams. Nope! There’s talk of the Phoenix Coyotes moving to the Emerald City should the latest round of arm twisting falls through with the beleaguered residents of Glendale, AZ. So given those options why not move the next best place…New York state. Pure genius.

Given Utica’s notoriety, the jokes about their venue serving steamed hams has begun.

Made it to (virtual) Chicago!

Today’s three-mile run got me to my brother’s house. Not bad, what is usually a four-hour flight followed by an hour of driving (Brian lives near O’Hare) took me two years and five months.

Last week’s health screening re-affirmed my opinion on how effective my exercise routine is; actually I knew it from 1997 but now I have my regimen back on course.

Next destination…our Las Vegas Timeshare.

Holy sh**snacks! Who’s a T-shirt babe? This gal!

The HR dolphin puppet is giving his acceptance.

The HR dolphin puppet is giving his acceptance.

Everyone’s favorite HR director/gossip, fight-club champ, street-car racer and probably a half-dozen R-rated other odd jobs received her due as a Sailor Jerry-esque pin-up! Given the third-season developments between Pam and Archer, maybe it’s appropriate. No wait, nothing is ever appropriate with Sterling Archer.

Looking forward to the artist’s upcoming stuff, namely my Cheryl shirt. I hope she gets around to Lana and Mallory.

An interesting essay on rock concert encores

If you’ve been to any Pop/Rock/Country show in the last 30 years, you know the artist/act will always come back out for an encore. Most save their biggest hit for this part. I already knew these things were scripted in when I had an internship with the concert promoter Stardate; it was written into the rider and often said the band must play 80 minutes with a 10-minute encore, everything after this was gratis.

The lack of spontaneity has never bothered me nor did I have this sudden disillusionment after seeing my first rider. I felt more like I knew how to play the game. Besides, arena shows are very staged events. The whiney Washington Post critic Mental Floss linked off of is probably an aging Baby Boomer or Classic Rock stooge.

However, I am not surprised that the finger of blame has been pointed at Bruce Springsteen, the King of Arena/Dull Rock. To be fair, he is a good writer when others cover his songs (Manfred Mann, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Natalie Cole, Basia Bulat). Bruce’s sincerity and energy are impressive too. I just can’t get into his stuff after I went to college despite having a reconciliation with other Classic Rock acts. The Boss ruining the encore is another demonstration of how American Exceptionalism entails the “more is less” problem.

PBS proves it is still worth saving with this campaign

Two years ago, Slate‘s Mark Oppenheimer said PBS wasn’t worth saving because its audience is mostly aging Baby Boomers and cable has taken its place for programming. I wouldn’t know about the former yet the recent ad campaign with the New York affiliate has proven the cable argument to be bullshit.

We cut the cord years ago but whenever I catch TLC, History or Discovery in the break room at work, it’s always some show featuring rednecks in a pawn shop, rebuilding motorcycles/cars or killing gators. The worse stuff involves paranormal crap. None of this is educational. Then comes the excuse I’ve heard for why SyFy shows wrestling, psychics and ghost chasing (none of which is science fiction, hence the name change); the garbage pays the bills.

All the more reason to keep PBS afloat.

Personally, PBS should be allowed to regain its national feed like when we had Dish TV. This went away once we had to go with the local channels package for KLRU.

I wouldn’t sweat its current swerve to the older demographic. PBS has adapted in the past, it can again. There’s a ton of its content on Netflix streaming.

しらせ = Good News

I have several pieces of good things to share starting off with the translation above. The Japanese word in the title is “shirase” which I learned from a Shugo Tokumaru song. A co-worker explained its meaning and context: “good personal news,” Internet searches will just say “news.”

Friday was my annual health screening. As I have bored you all about the running, eating less, eating more fruit, cutting back on sugar and just trying harder. It panned out really well…everything but my waistline was either optimal or desirable! Even the main boogeymen Glucose (92!) and blood pressure. I was mostly stoked about losing three inches (7.5 cm) on my waistline. According to the Wellness Center’s goals, I only have an inch to go to be in the clear! Somara was saying my shirts weren’t being so snug over the last few months, now I have written proof.

Next up, our vacation was scheduled over 10 days ago. I didn’t put up a countdown until today, when it hit around 100 days to go. Obviously it’s Las Vegas. This will be my ninth trip to Sin City. It’ll be a belated 10th wedding anniversary and joint birthday celebration. The plane tickets were pre-paid through our vacation fund, the timeshare became our permanent property last Summer, now we just need to see who is coming to town for booking show tickets.

What else? Our car will be paid off in early July. Thanks to the house being refinanced, we have no payment next month. Thus we’ve redirected it to Honda. Those of you who know the ins and outs of car buying may get hit up by me this Fall. I need to bone up on the features via Consumer Reports too.

Finally, someone takes on Warner Music over “Happy Birthday”

The song “Happy Birthday” is only the tip of the iceberg on how broken and archaic America’s copyright/trademark law is. There’s a really good piece on its history from On The Media here. How much Warner Music demands must be pretty cost prohibitive now. When I was a kid, restaurant staffs singing it was no big deal. Today I hear all these weird alternatives at Outback, TGIFridays, etc. The Time Warner empire extorts an estimated two million dollars a year for a song that couldn’t possibly be copyrighted past 1921 based upon the law.

Documentary film maker Jennifer Nelson is taking on the media barony because the other media baronies just pass the “cost of doing business” on to their customers. Despite the mountain of evidence proving Time Warner’s claim is bullshit, it will be a David v. Goliath fight thanks to the cost of litigation; the source of power behind patent trolls and Scientology.

Next up will be ending the ridiculous extensions being granted to Disney and the pharmaceutical industry. As one critic once pointed out, we have too much ownership in the West.

Probable Wiz World Convention Shirt

buddystanI accrued this mash-up shirt weeks ago but haven’t worn it nor posted, totally forgot with the latter. I’m not a fan of Kevin Smith’s films (after Clerks his material is worse than M Night Shama-lama-ding-dong) yet I couldn’t pass up any opportunity to have something cool for the possible chance I may have to meet the primary co-creator of the Marvel Universe.
