James Hong

As Russellmania concluded Sunday evening, the Alamo hosts presented their surprise…James Hong! Since the last movie in the marathon (more on that later) was Big Trouble in Little China, James was the perfect finale. For those who’ve never seen the movie, he plays the principle villain (David) Lo Pan.

It was a huge honor to meet James. He has a humongous list of roles going as far back as the Fifties should you check out imdb.com. According to him, something along 500 appearances on TV and film. I could believe it. Comedies is what I enjoy him most in.

Retro action figures

In honor of Russellmania today, I saved up this sweet link from Awesome Robo (more about that later). Somebody really creative took a bunch of old GI Joes from the Eighties and converted them into action figures based upon R-rated Action/Horror movies. Kurt Russell’s character from The Thing is present even if it doesn’t resemble him.

900-plus miles achieved in running

Not a bad start for the exercise resolutions of 2013. Hell, last year I hadn’t even gotten across the 300-miles mark. I was practically starting over then but I did manage to exceed 2011’s distance  by 30 percent. Now it’s beyond 100 percent, I bet I can make it over 200.

Onward to 1000 miles and Grandma’s house, not necessarily in that order.

Fourteen years ago, a long dinner at Chili’s

I recall the weather was much better that evening too, I only need my biker jacket and my Babs Bunny sweatshirt. I still have the clothing and the lady I met, Chili’s moved to a location closer to the feeder road on I-35.

For once, the online dating scene didn’t introduce me to a seriously disturbed person (Allison) or a rather bossy Aggie (Kristine). Three others were OK yet there wasn’t anything further on either side, probably me but I got over it quickly (Amy, Julie and Kami). Somara was the most fun because there wasn’t any pressure, the objective was to hit all the social things we enjoyed like movies, shows, etc. Getting my crap together at Apple (being hired) and a long-term place to live were more important than a girlfriend, Somara’s role was to be a buddy, let the rest fall where it may.

The plans for this year are mainly centered around Russellmania. I figure we’ll have a nice, quick dinner at the Chili’s closest to our house tonight. Somara’s team has to pack up to change buildings over the weekend so anything after dinner (movie namely) is out of the question. Besides, Sunday’s marathon overcompensates.

Foolishness at the Lego Store

I was in a puckish mood during my latest trip to Barton Creek Mall while perusing the Lego Store. Despite Somara losing my original attempt to make a Joe Bob Briggs Lego dude, I still had his cowboy hat. I figured they carried various torsos with Western wear. Then in the accessory buckets there were syringes and handcuffs! The latter I know is for the influx of policemen parts. Being a wiseass I’ll take a guess on the syringes being steroid doses for the baseball player parts I noticed.

Below are my latest creative and silly works to share with the world! I hope you get a chuckle on the last figure.

Film critic and comical writer Joe Bob Briggs

Somara and I have tickets to see Joe Bob hosting/MC’ing a screening of Don Knotts’ The Love God? I plan to give the little guy to him as a gift.

Mini fortune teller Zoltar

The Lego Store didn’t sell any flying carpets to strengthen my turban-wearing character, I was constantly thinking of a mature Aladdin.

The red hair, drugs, in handcuffs…it's Lindsay Lohan!

Netflix streaming gets better this Spring!

Nice to see that Time Warner came to its senses by allowing Cartoon Network and Adult Swim content to be shown alongside all the bitchin’ Nickelodeon and Disney material. Maybe I can catch up on Adventure Time, Regular Show, Robot Chicken and most importantly, CN’s rich archive: Dexter’s Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Squirrel Boy and Samurai Jack.

The Time Machine Did It by John Swartzwelder

Book number four on my iPad but I read it a while back, forgot to write about it, got sucked into reading others, namely the Simon Pegg bio and Idiot America (next up for review!). Since Machine was a quick, funny experience, I read it again and got through it in record time…two weeks over my lunch hour!

You might recognize the author. John Swartzwelder is the record holder for writing the most episodes of The Simpsons. You can usually tell which ones were his because there are “old-timey” elements and absurdism as current show running Al Jean would explain in the commentaries; Swatzwelder refused to show up so other people would tell anecdotes regarding him. There’s a list here to help you familiarize yourself with the direction Swartzwelder tended to take the show. I’ve been re-watching The Simpsons starting from season one and during its breakout season John wrote the memorable “Bart the General,” “Call of the Simpsons” and “Life on the Fast Lane.”

Those DVD commentaries were how I learned about his book too. See, listening to the additional audio tracks come in handy for things besides Geeks Who Drink! My friend Jeremy said he gets nothing out of them. I did.

For Swartzwelder’s first novel, he introduces LA’s most incompetent and oblivious private-eye Frank Burly. The story is told from Frank’s perspective (as he reminisces over this case); a combination of Preston Sturges slang, James Ellroy’s rat-a-tat pace and Doug Adams’ word play. After a day of bodyguard work, Frank is approached by a homeless guy who claims to be Thomas Dewey Mandible III, the city’s wealthiest man. Somehow the Pellagra crime family took everything overnight but his memory of how things used to be. Nobody believes Mandible so he is down to the worst detective in LA. Frank decides to the take case due to Mandible’s willingness to pay should this pan out; besides, it was this or hit the all-you-can-eat spaghetti joint, work has been slow in the private-eye business. Mandible’s primary objective is the recovery of a figurine, should Frank recover this, everything will be copacetic.

As Frank wanders the city trying to make additional expenses for Mandible’s bill, he notices there are a lot of strange objects being fenced lately at the pawn shops. Then Frank accidentally witnesses a known small-time crook going into a shimmering phone booth and coming back out with a bag of money and a Van Gogh painting. Seems there might be something to Mandible’s fantastic story.

Anything else I could say in the review becomes a spoiler. The title says it all. What makes Machine great is Swartzwelder’s execution through word jokes, references to film noir and Frank’s general incompetence. Frank isn’t quite as stupid as Homer Simpson yet he could be outwitted by Bart and Lisa, probably Milhouse too. Is it funny? Quite but it’s intelligent, somewhat intellectual/inside humor, mainly for people familiar with the author’s tastes and past work. Machine is what SNL/Comedy Central aspire to, what Adam Sandler’s/Wil Ferrel’s followers don’t get (nor like) and what Larry Sanders often achieved. My comparisons are an attempt to set the expectation since humor is a subjective matter.

The only complaint I have is the book’s brevity for its price; a puny 138 pages for $10 in the standard Kindle layout (the digital future will be cheaper my butt). Maybe it’s self-published. A physical copy runs $16. My hope is that Mr. Swartwelder received a handsome share of my money. It’s the least I could do for the hours of entertainment he has given me through his past television/film work.

I would like to read Swartzwelder’s second novel Double Wonderful which is his take on Westerns. Alas, Double doesn’t exist in an electronic form yet. When I get around to it (hopefully this year), I will jump ahead to his third How I Conquered Your Planet, Frank Burly’s second (mis)adventure.

Mumbled/Weird lyrics clarified

My only gripe with the Mental Floss article is its brevity. Only 11 entries? Pop/Rock music has hundreds! Queen and Men at Work I already knew. The Eagles didn’t need much work to figure out, those guys were hitting the substances pretty hard during their Hotel California period.

In light of David Bowie’s first new record in 10 years, maybe they could enlighten us all with the homo-erotic elements in “Moonage Daydream” that still doesn’t upset the most homophobic Classic Rock fanatic. Then again, those dudes probably still have their Rush Hemispheres posters!

Favorite Stars goal this season!

Rumor has it that forward Cody Eakin, this season’s breakout offensive player on my team will be headed to Dallas thanks to the lockout being officially over (the players ratified the CBA this afternoon as per nhl.com). Last night he scored the second coolest empty-net goal I’ve ever seen on TV or live. Glad to see he’s leaving Austin on a humorous, enjoyable and awesome note.

Somara luckily caught it on my new iPod Touch without any of the spectators in front obscuring the action.

NHL Hockey will (likely) be returning

The NHL’s board of governors has voted for the new CBA but what makes it official for me is Toronto firing its GM. Usually the Maple Leafs wait until there’s actual disappointment: season’s end, they’re eliminated from the playoffs or they didn’t make it to the playoffs. I guess they decided to get their annual blamestorm over with for re-assurance to us betrayed fans.

New Chucks for January 2013!

I’ll initiate with the least interesting pair I scored at the outlet store. This set I call Tweed. I can’t remember what the box said nor does it matter. The internal tag has some ramblings over the materials, never mind they’re manufactured in Vietnam, a nation I’m sure follows environmental and free-trade guidelines.

Last year, Converse had an arrangement with Dr. Seuss’s estate (or whoever owns the rights) for multiple designs based upon his characters. The Grinch finally appeared at my store but I had to go with a half size too large or be SOL. Since the centennial pair I have owned for the last several years haven’t damaged my feet permanently and they’re 11 1/2 too, I knew the gamble was worthwhile.

I do like the extra effort on the tongue. I should consider getting more eye-popping laces for the Grinch.

Hooray! Converse and DC heard my pleas to get the female superheroes on to a hightop! I was so disappointed when Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Supergirl and Batgirl were added to the line yet as lows. Recently Harlequin (or Harley Quinn) dominates a hightop with the Joker. Villains are alright. Heroes are way better! Maybe the powers behind these shoes capitulated after Aquaman. If you squint hard enough, you can see Wonder Woman’s invisible jet on the shoes too!

The interiors of the DC line are a joy to behold. Each superhero gets his/her respective logo on the tongue and inner lining.

Depression bout #1 for 2013

Cold medicine; gloomy, cold weather; and just bad luck with getting to see my doctor (he has the flu, thus canceling two appointments) makes a recipe for a great experience. Today was the first time I left the house since last Wednesday evening. Generally I hate being sick despite all the sleep I get to catch up on. There is only so much snoozing you can do too which leads into TV watching, hoping it can put you back out. At least I finally saw what the fuss is about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia; I think I get it, the show is a human cartoon starring four (then five) sociopaths who make Patsy and Edina appear saintly. The reviewer for The Onion definitely watches Sunny on a weekly basis because when you see multiple episodes in a row, the pattern reveals itself, making the show less enjoyable. I had a similar complaint with King of the Hill (what’s Bill or Dale’s problem now?) and Duckman (here comes the title character’s rant). To balance it out I hunted down my first season DVDs of The Simpsons, see if the show originally was the gold standard of commentaries. No, I think my assessment happened after David Mirkin’s tenure yet there are interesting insights brought up by the first season’s crew.

Anyway, what’s there to be depressed about? Wish I knew. It’s a combination of many things and for me, the experience is painful especially when I’m completely aware of the disconnect. Disconnect? Facts versus feeling, aka, life around Austin is pretty cool so again, what’s the problem? My hope is getting it worked through when my doc is no longer contagious as per his doctor.

The plan wasn’t to bring anyone down, just give you (or in Southsider, youse) a quick FYI on why the site was sluggish. Things will pick up again. Much more is coming. Hell Russellmania is in two weeks, Stars play back to back matches this weekend and I’m fired up for pinball league.

Happy 66th Birthday to David Bowie!

The man is full of surprises. Just when I figured he was fading away into retirement last year with his turning 65 and no new (studio) album in nine years, The Thin White Duke pops up. I figure people in the loop knew he’d do this. But who cares. I’m glad to see he is willing to hit the well one more time. Is it any good? No idea, I will get around to it later today. Bowie is working with Tony Visconti again which is a mixed thing. Bad: not trying another producer to broaden his sound; Good: Visconti is a fantastic producer whose career spans the decades.

Nice to see the first album I want to buy for 2013 will be from a favorite artist.

Farewell Alamo South Lamar/Highball…

…for now. The relatively young, beloved locations are gone so the landlord can “redevelop” the area into unaffordable housing for the Republicans’ offspring while they attend UT and St. Edwards.

The other tenants weren’t as lucky. They all had to move to other locations since the rumor is, they won’t receive reimbursements for the down time. The saddest loss was the music shop where SRV allegedly purchased his first guitar.

When Alamo South Lamar returns, the Highball will be attached. The GWD Quizmaster John assured me the stage will be present for the amusing round sevens. The bowling alley will not be in the new model.

Welcome KUTX!

Public radio proves once again that the problem with the broadcasting industry isn’t technology, it’s content. While commercial stations’ mind and marketshare began to erode in the Aughts, NPR affiliates started their rise in the Nineties.

Last Fall the FCC approved UT’s acquisition of 98.9 FM which was languishing as yet another ho-hum adult contemporary station the world didn’t need. I don’t even recall which debt-saddled media barony controlled it. With another frequency, KUT could spin its music shows off and focus on the news/talk stuff NPR is known for. To me, it’s two stations worth listening to when the iPod is out of commission.

Sure the music programming on KUT (now KUTX) is a crapshoot yet it’s a better alternative than the formulaic drivel the others provide. I think KUTX will continue the dying mission of salvaging Austin’s reputation for being a city for music lovers…while the musicians have fled to Waco, where the rent is affordable.

I think this means KUT has given up on digital radio; it required a special radio capable of picking up the other two stations lurking under the same number/frequency. Fry’s carried these special receivers, never could get it to work.
