Wreck It Ralph: Worth Seeing

My initial reaction to this was, “Ugh! A video game version of Toy Story with flavor-of-the-month voice actors, namely Jane Lynch.” Jane has always been cool (her part in 40 Year Old Virgin was clever), I just feel she’s getting overexposed. I changed my mind from “avoid this” to “give it a shot” when its release drew closer because Ralph is directed by Rich Moore. Who? Rich was the supervising director on Futurama‘s original run on Fox and he was involved with The Simpsons. If he could make me cry at the ending of “Jurassic Bark,” he deserved a shot with this feature.

The trailer covers the plot so I won’t waste any electrons on it and I suppose this review will only assist those who still haven’t seen the movie.

Ralph does have a good pace, it doesn’t linger too long on the predictable emotional climax. You don’t have to well-versed in video-game culture to understand its references but for fans, there is a cornucopia of characters throughout the decades. I’m impressed at Disney’s success at getting so many cleared. This wasn’t a cheap task plus at least several companies who manufactured those games are out of business, Gottleib is the only coming to mind; they made Q-Bert.

Would I watch this again is the real test with many cartoons for me. The quick answer is yes. Unlike many being made, Ralph is more than a pacifier to keep kids quiet for 90 minutes. Besides trying to find all the obscure characters I missed the first time, I did enjoy the story’s execution.

We didn’t get the opportunity to see Ralph in 3-D sadly. I think the two major landscapes in the story would’ve been awesome to experience.

Not that Pixar invented the short feature before the main one but Disney threw in an amusing warmup called Paper Man. They would only be imitating Pixar if it employs technical enhancements planned for their next computer-generated film.

Alamo enhancements: a montage of how the player’s character/ship is killed from numerous video games; the Adventure Time episode when Jake and Finn are trapped in B-Mo; some Tim & Eric with John C. Reilly as a video-game expert; commercials for the old home consoles (I always loved The Tubes starring in Activision’s Megamania game, it was a perfect marriage!) and the opening credits to the R-rated teen-sex romp Joysticks.

RIP Patrick Moore

Personally I’ve never heard of this astronomer but if he provided inspiration for Queen’s lead guitarist and in-band astrophysicist Brian May, then the gentleman deserved a quick mention. From what I could glean, he must’ve been the UK’s version of Carl Sagan.

Teddy and Mewsette cloned or reincarnated?

While gathering information about our backyard cat situation with AHS, I spotted this duo who resembled the two cats I grew up with in the Eighties. I completely have spaced on their names but they’re siblings, the tortoise shell is female and the marmalade is male. According to the lady tending them, torties always female (I don’t know, Mewsette’s father had the same patterns) and marmalades are 80% male. I had to summon extra willpower into not adopting them. I’m still not over Molly’s passing plus Miette deserves extra spoiling.

Texas twang fading out, maybe

A common topic I remember coming up in my communications classes was people being afraid of regional accents/dialects disappearing when radio started taking hold in the Twenties. It wasn’t just an American concern, other nations worried too. Seems this might be coming true albeit late as per this NPR story.

Somara says she used to have this twang and worked really hard to be rid of it. I’ve lived with her for over a decade, I probably wouldn’t notice unless I concentrated. I did have a speech teacher 30 years ago named Mr. Hicks (no relation to the comedian) whose diction was impeccable yet he admitted that he could never shake the short I trap; short I sounds like a long I or an A with a Y; Mr. Hicks said he tripped up on crime, time, prime, etc. Say it in your head because I doubt Bartleby or Webster express the sounds easily.

Being a Midwesterner at birth, we’re allegedly guilty of having no accent while being bland, dull speakers. The Midwest in this instance would be Central Illinois and Indiana though, Wisconsin and Minnesota have some distinguishing quirks amplified by the Coen Brothers’ crappy movie Fargo. Now there is one part of Illinois with colorful speakers, the Southsiders (South Chicago). My former roommate Paul hailed from this region and his manner of speaking was distinct from the rest of the state. If you need an example, watch the Superfans bit from SNL. It’s exaggerated for comic purposes except for the irrational fanaticism for Chicago sports teams.

I’ve lived in Austin for practically 20 years, I wonder how much twang I have accumulated as per the professor in the article. At least when it comes out of my mouth, the twang is natural and not forced unlike a fake Texan hiding in Dallas, hoping everyone forgets him being the worst president in recent history.

DriveSavers’ initial results

I received various level of news this week from a couple sources while the site continues to be in limbo. I have been making a spreadsheet for the stories I am missing out on, maybe I should crib from Tolkien now that The Hobbit is on the horizon, create a section called The Lost Tales to cover the downtime. Maybe.

  • The bad news: DriveSavers said the hard drive had physical/mechanical damage. Knowing their success rate, it translates into the cost being closer to the high-end of the quote. Currently $1700. Next week will be the next update on where the technicians are.
  • The good news: I only have to pay if DriveSavers is successful in saving the data I want. I’m going for all the contents at this point, it might be bootable. Jeremy sends it’s unlikely. The minimal goal is the var directory where WordPress keeps the lion’s share of data.
  • The better news: Should the main data point is recovered, I pondered how to get it re-integrated with the operational setup my server is running from now. I did some research and asked around on some restoration tactics. I can’t recall if I thought of it or someone suggested the rsync command. Either way, I conducted a test involving the operational database into a guinea pig operating from an older setup. Success. Now to wait on pins and needles for another darn week.

Nashville achieved!

The downside of RSS feeds…you don’t get to see my “flashy” countdowns and progression bards showing how I’m doing on my running, rowing and weight loss.

As of today, I have run the equivalent distance between my house and Christina’s house around Nashville, TN.

Next stop which I calculate will be in January 2013, maybe February, my Grandma’s house on 203 W Graham Street, Bloomington, IL! From my house it’s 978 miles away.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, on my Chucks!

Once in a blue moon, all the uber-hype with social media (aka FaceBook) actually informs me of something cool I wanted to know about.

Elvira (nee Cassandra Peters) has licensed her character on hightops with this shop in California, I think it’s Venice Beach as per their URL. Besides her, this joint does The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Shameless and Dexter. I stumbled upon a link in which they can any design you want for $100, as long as it doesn’t violate copyright law.

Apple manufacturing Macs in the US again

The details about this are rather scant but I remember back in the Nineties when Apple had factories in Singapore, Cork, Colorado and California. Some of the original iMacs were made in the states too. Somara and I are seriously entertaining buying a new Mac just on this factor alone.

One economist said the decision wasn’t over rising Chinese labor costs but the advancements in robotics with manufacturing.

My new iPod Touch! It rocks

I just scored my first new iPod in five years. Before the Touch, I used to upgrade every year because I never had any trouble selling the used one to a friend who couldn’t afford the new, full-price models. When Somara bought the first version of the Touch, she had it engraved so I didn’t want to part with such a personal gift. Thanks to my exercise routine, the old Touch (aka Buster Bunny/KMAG V) has been getting more usage. However the latest iteration had enough changes, upgrades and features to entice me. Plus I was allowed to borrow a black model during the Thanksgiving break to make sure I’d like it, short answer, yes.

Apple’s new online ability to set up delivery at a local retail store made this even more satisfying. Who doesn’t like near-instant gratification? Maybe Buddhists. I’m not one so I wouldn’t know, I just know I dig this. Its storage capacity is four times what my previous iPod, thus I can stuff it full of those podcasts I’m falling behind on…there’s a show I can pitch to a cable network, electronic hoarders! The camera is pretty sweet as well. This device will be my “film” camera of choice whenever I plan to get raw footage, probably cats and kittens doing their cute things.

The new earbuds are a relief. They don’t hurt after a couple hours which makes it easier to fall asleep with them left in. I tend to put myself to sleep by putting Stuff You Missed in History Class at a low volume.

Next up, seeing what my protection options are at Ghost Armor in Barton Creek Mall. Probably some cool 360 pictures and HD movies from it.

Happy 96th Birthday Charles

Editor’s Note: This is overdue by a few weeks but he still deserves to be mentioned for his WWII service alone.

We haven’t seen him lately yet we want to congratulate Charles on his special day. We’ve been told indirectly he is struggling somewhat with his memory and getting frail. I would like to see Charles push on to 100, it’s possible, I read an article about how the West alone has over five digits of people in this age bracket, up by an astronomical amount since the last century.

Eventually Somara is going to make Charles an apple pie, his favorite dessert. I would like to get a P-38 model built for him. I wish he had a photo of his plane’s nose art, maybe I can have it painted on.

Pinballz celebrates two years with two tournaments!

Technically the place’s anniversary is around Thanksgiving but the owners delayed it to the first weekend of December, worked for us!

Last year there was a tournament featuring Pinballz’s new Transformers game, based upon those dreadful films. This year the focus was on videogames: Galaga and Street Fighter II. All the proceeds were donated to the Austin Humane Society, where Molly came from.

I totally suck at fighting games. I lack the patience to learn button combinations to make the characters do the cool moves which are vital, nobody wins sticking with basic kicks, blocks and punches, you gotta’ make lightning happen! So I threw my hat in the ring for Galaga. I had no expectation beyond not coming in last. Plus my five clams would help another Molly.

How did the Galaga challenge work? Each player had no more than ten minutes to rack up as many points as possible. If you ran out of ships first, you were done. Lastly, it was on the stand-up cabinet that followed used the traditional settings: no more than three shots on the field at a time…spraying the bugs with missiles wasn’t possible.

I survived six minutes and scored over 50,000 points. If you know much about this videogame, these results aren’t very impressive. Some poor soul came in under 10,000 granting me my wish not to be in last. The four participants ahead of me guaranteed I started in fifth as I descended. I wasn’t disappointed, I did this for fun. Somara not playing was the larger bummer. She is the Maggi Republic’s reigning champ. Even on an off day my wife can get up to three challenge stages. Maybe next year.

I’m looking forward to playing in a league next month because I dropped out last Fall. Will I take first place? No idea. Don’t care. It’s all about having a good time and sharing this hobby with other enthusiasts. I would like to see if the owners will let me run a Novice-level league in the near future. I’m full of trivia about the game!

Phase IV with the director’s original ending

The night I stumbled upon this movie’s showing in the Alamo’s November-December schedule my brain had to do a double-take. For years I had to ponder if Phase IV really existed thanks to the few people who have heard of it; the rest gave me looks of “you’re making this crap up dude,” including my parents, they watched it with me on TV…the ABC Thursday Night Movie circa the Summer of 1978!

So this film is making the rounds as a part of a Saul Bass showcase sponsored by the Academy, the Oscar® one. The man was most famous for designing the opening credits/titles and posters to numerous movies you’d recognize from the Sixites: West Side Story and Ocean’s 11 (not the terrible remakes). I think the Academy’s representative said Bass also directed commercials. In the early Seventies, he finally directed a feature and it was his last, I guess he returned to what he did best. Before Bass died in 1996, he left a vast treasure trove of material to the Academy including this movie’s original ending. The studio hated it, found it confusing and changed it against Bass’s wishes.

The Academy is awash in treasure which is why it took over 15 years for what we watched to see the light of day. Plus the Academy had to put some effort into cleaning up what Bass left them; hunt down the color separations, negatives, remove dirt, scratches, etc. Was it worth the effort? I’ll let you know below and since Phase IV is over 30 years old, what I write isn’t a spoiler as I give a synopsis.

An ambiguous cosmic event happens in the Spring (northern hemisphere) with worldwide disappointment; sounds like Kohoutek. Little did the human race know, the event actually affected several ant species indigenous to the American Southwest. Enter entomologist Dr. Hubbs and game-theory expert Lesko. The government has sent them to investigate because Hubbs recently turned in a report stating that all natural enemies of these ants have disappeared. Lesko was brought along to assist Hubbs in finding  an explanation for the ants’ behavior, maybe discover how they communicate.

Both underestimate how vicious and aggressive these insects have become until a local farm is overrun. The farm’s residents flee toward Hubbs and Lesko’s sealed lab for help but are killed by the ants’ bites/stings and poison Hubbs unleashes. The scientists go outside in sealed bio-hazard suits to assess the damage: the dead farmers, their exploded vehicle. To their shock, the farm’s youngest resident, Kendra, survived so they take her inside.

The ants then escalate the conflict by becoming immune to the poison in a matter of days, attacking the lab with reflective mounds (trying to raise the in-door temperature) and sabotaging the lab’s environmental systems. Hubbs also gets bit after Kendra damages his ant-behavior experiment, this results in his arm swelling and he gradually descends into madness. Lesko senses time is running out so he sends a message to the ants hoping they’ll understand. The ants’ response puzzles Lesko. Who or what represents the oval inside the circle (the lab) inside the square (the poisonous area)?

Kendra figures the ants want her and leaves the lab while the scientists debate. She disappears without a trace. Hubbs decides the ants are taking instructions from a hyper-intelligent queen in a nearby mound, thus he must go there with the strongest poison at his disposal to kill her. Delirious, Hubbs ventures outside unprotected, only to fall into a pit as the ants devour him. Lesko is now completely unnerved. His calculations state that if nothing is done, the ants will conquer the desert by the season’s end and based upon their reproductive rate, ants will invade the closest major cities. Lesko dons a bio-hazard suit, grabs the strongest poison in the arsenal and sets out to do what Hubbs recommended. The ants fight back every step of the way forcing him to the heavier gear.

Lesko makes it to the mound and climbs in through a human-sized tunnel, poison canister at the ready. Before he can find the queen’s chamber, Kendra rises out of the ground in front of him. They embrace and Lesko realizes what the ants want…them. Ants don’t want to destroy the human race, they plan to change us to be a part of their world. Obviously, the ants will be charge.

Bass’s Original Ending

After the movie ended, Alamo rolled the original conclusion which starts with Lesko entering the mound. Kendra rises up. They embrace. Then it’s a trippy, several minute montage of what the world will be like with the ants in charge…structured, specialized, ordered. At least I think it’s what Bass had in mind. There are elements of 2001 present, the part when Bowman enters the monolith to be transformed into the starchild.

Was it worth the effort? When it comes to seeing the writer’s or director’s original vision, absolutely. I may not like the ending or a character but studios shouldn’t muck with the person being paid to tell the story.

Do I recommend seeing it? Only if you’re familiar with the movie and have a strong curiosity.

Pending the results of DriveSavers

After much mental anguish and anticipation, I decided to go through with a post to update those who care. Firstly, Jeremy had no luck getting anything to happen. His immediate theory is that the drive’s SMART chip turned everything off to protect the platter(s). So much for the free route.

I decided to eat it and called DriveSavers. Much has changed since I worked with them indirectly through Jeremy’s business. Their website had a form to submit a request for a quote; their competitor Total Recall was a bust because the site just sat in a frozen state. DS’s answer popped up in minutes with three different quotes. They were all based upon how quickly I wanted the data back. Econo class was the best shot given the circumstances: $700-$2700 but only if they’re able to get anything off it. I called to say, “go for it.” Now before you think I’m a Rockefeller or Vanderbilt (people with real money not moonbeams like Zuckerberg), I was able to go forward with the decision thanks to putting away a chunk of my inheritance for a rainy day. The news was somewhat better when I called my customer service representative. Everything is on DS’s dime until they tell me the results: the shipping and assessment. I had to provide a box and a replacement drive though. Better yet, as an Apple employee I receive 30 percent off on the final price. Hmm, $490 to $1890 feels less painful!

I rallied Thursday night to get the drive back from Jeremy. Then came the Container Store for a box meeting their directions along with packing material. Wrapping up the trilogy of errands was Fry’s to get the replacement hard drive. OK, I hit Taco Bell next to drown my misery in a number 10 meal while watching The Mysterious Cities of Gold on Netflix. My hopes went out Friday and as of now it’s in transit to California.

What are the odds? I think this recovery will be a walk in the park for them. These are the guys who are famous for saving data from portables found at the bottom of the Amazon. I remember they used to hand out a thank from The Simpsons‘ writers for rescuing half a season trapped on a computer Homer spilled beer on. Again, the key is rescuing the var directory. I’m hoping they get everything and I can reboot from where I left off. Jeremy states this rarely happens, allegedly the mach_kernel tends to kiss it. Either way I have to let them try, otherwise Picayune may have to take a radical departure.

Meanwhile…enjoy the current situation being represented by Bender’s “death” before he realizes he trapped in the wireless cloud.

Hit from behind while waiting at a red light

Editor’s Note: Remember this is in the Lost Tales section, it happened during the server’s downtime. I could’ve let the incident go but we have yet to receive a decent follow-up from the other driver’s insurance company.

I’m definitely certain our Honda Fit is cursed. For the third year in a row we’ve been hit by another driver. It was deja vu all over again from two angles, the second being the nature of this accident…I had it over 19 years ago. Hopefully our car insurance company won’t say it was my fault like those crooks at Farmer’s. The lady who hit me made a bad estimate on the red light I was waiting at. I think the gravel on McNeil didn’t help neither. The damage you can see in the photo was a relief. How much noise was made and the energy her car transferred into mine was proportionally greater.

Somara and I are reasonable, we just want the damage to the bumper fixed. Last time I was hit, my back was on fire hours later. That was solved with a quick trip to the doctor, a diagnosis of torn muscles and some awesome painkillers. We don’t want the driver’s insurance to get jacked or taken away.
