Rest in peace Molly

Molly: April 1, 1999 - September 28, 2012

Pretty much all the FaceBook readers already knew as the weekend rolled around, Molly passed away this Friday evening after being diagnosed with terminal cancer only 11 days earlier. I have been in mourning off/on throughout the weekend because it has been very trying. Molly was my first actual pet cat. I was very lucky too, having past pets growing up, getting an animal with the right balance is tricky. We all have horror stories involving a bad fit, those never end well.

This post is the one for immediacy (RSS feeds and those who have Picayune as a bookmark).

I wrote something, much, much longer but more fitting. You don’t have to read the whole thing, feel free to skim. All I ask is to please, please, please, leave a Comment and/or your two cents on the idea I have to honor Molly. Click here.

Thanks and I promise Picayune will be returning to some normalcy/consistency soon.

RIP: Herbert Lom

Most people my age recognize him as Chief Inspector Dreyfus, the poor boss of Inspector Clouseau from the original and far superior Pink Panther movies. As a kid, his insane antics were on par with Peter Sellers, probably due to his past as a heavy. In the last decade I stumbled upon him as Captain Nemo while watching Mysterious Island on TCM; this was a staple on Family Classics on WGN up to the Seventies.

Lom’s obit reminded me that he was also in Hopscotch, a rather clever spy flick with Walter Mattheu and Ned Beatty; check it out on Netflix streaming, I guarantee this. I hadn’t seen The Dead Zone since high school so I utterly forget him being Walken’s therapist.

Meanwhile, I need to check out the original The Ladykillers to see his first team up with Sellers and only with Sir Alec Guinness.

Molly update 9/26, the end has been decided

Today I made one of the toughest decisions in my life when I scheduled Molly’s euthanizing (Saturday morning this weekend). I don’t think I had much choice, especially when there was so little spark in eyes as I fed her. By spark I mean she didn’t struggle, she didn’t barf, she just swallowed her food, gurggling and complaining.

The vet was cool enough to sell us the additional pain syringes to give Molly to get her through (I hope it’s the right amount).

It’s been a long couple weeks, thanks for sticking by me. I think I will be returning to my normal self by next week.

I nailed eight out of 11

…and one that I missed, I should’ve nailed because I’m a huge fan of the show, still.

See how well you do by checking the link here. I’m betting Jose can beat my score due to his time with Channel 42 in Orlando, back in the day when Fox stations carried more syndicated material than original to fill the days. I will give you a hint to get you started, only one show is still on the air. Yeah, pretty helpful.

Happy Birthday Somara

How I wish it could be under better circumstances and in other ways, our recent trip to Las Vegas was a joint vacation/birthday party. Somara treated herself to firing a Tommy gun (the machine guns from the old gangster pictures, didn’t have the famous circular ammo container though) and a SAW (this is often mounted on a Hummer or Jeep, sometimes one person carries it support others).

Once the Molly matters are resolved and other crap with work, we’ll probably have a nice dinner to celebrate.

Molly update for 9/24

Her weakening has made it easier for me to feed her by myself. Over the weekend it had become a two-person job. People with small pets know the routine of putting the animal into a burrito while another squirts down the nourishment with a syringe. Molly spits up a lot less too.

The odd part is how she isn’t cold. Wicca’s final days required us to put a heating pad under her sleeping location. Molly prefers to be on a cool surface. Maybe the cancer gives feverish symptoms and Molly finds it more relaxing on cardboard or the kitchen floor. Hiding is not often the routine.

I’m surprised my wife hasn’t dumped me for not being very manly in this situation. I frequently cry while holding Molly in the burrito “stance” because the cat seems so sweet and trusting. Never mind her meow being rather terse and angry, that’s Molly to the end.

Would it be selfish to hope Molly passes in her sleep soon instead of having the vet euthanize my cat?

AC/DC Match Screen inspired by Paul Silder!

This pinball machine was the first model Stern rolled out for 2012. The band hasn’t really done anything relevant musically but I feel they were a great choice because AC/DC is a living cartoon. Their songs do loan themselves to little games within the machine too. My local hangout hasn’t picked it up so I go to finally experience a few games in Las Vegas at the Pinball Hall of Fame.

Other great machines I wish they had here: Austin Powers (circa 2001), Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Bash, Space Jam (again proving the rule, crummy movie = great game) and a small group of Gottleibs from the Seventies.

Cirque du Soleil: Beatles Love

Photo from yourvegasholiday.com

For Las Vegas ’12, the only show we had planned was Adam Ant but when our awesome concierge (Mike!) offered us Ka or Beatles Love for $20/head, we were like sure. He steered us toward the latter because there weren’t many good seats left for Ka.

How is it? For Beatles fans, it’s definitely something I think the majority would enjoy. The music has always been open to interpretation and can be engineered around any narrative: see Yellow Submarine or the Bee Gees/Frampton flick. I also think their fans approved because George Martin was involved with the production. The four estates have to sign off too; this I learned years ago through Sound Opinions‘ piece on the making of Rock Band: Beatles.

Is there a story though? Not a linear one, more along the lines of a collage or montage. There are recurring characters running around to tie the pieces together, maybe continuity? These characters are a guess since I’m not a fan, more of an academic with the Beatles: Dr. Maxwell, Sgt. Pepper, the Queen, Alice, Father MacKenzie, Eleanor Rigby and Meter Maid Rita. The songs are 90 percent from the band’s second half, or what my mother called the “druggie years.” A wise choice. The first half is solid Pop yet the subject matters were too similar.

What makes it different from the touring shows or the other Vegas staples (Mystere is the oldest, followed by O, I’ve seen both)? Beatles is the first I’ve seen with a “round” stage. If you’re paying to see this, make sure you get a middle-like seat. Ours were on an edge so one of the curtains they projected stuff on to obscured the view during the opening numbers. The other unique variable was rollerskating stunts on par with Tony Hawk moves.

It would be nice to see this roam the world as CdS does with Dralion or Allegria. However, it does make a great excuse to visit Sin City and spend some money at the Mirage, the casino that started the city’s Nineties boom.

Adam Ant at the Hard Rock (Las Vegas)

I’m going to try to climb out of my sorrow cocoon over Molly by posting some overdue highlights from the Las Vegas 2012 (my eighth trip) vacation.

As Summer was getting underway and the opportunity to get away was rapidly slipping, not everywhere has great weather after Mid-October, Somara and I were shopping for concerts to center LV12 around. I had pitched the upcoming Peter Gabriel Back2Front tour celebrating the anniversary of So, his commercial breakthrough. The pricetag was rather steep for seeing PG at PH but I figured it would be worth the sacrifice. Given the vet bills, it’s a good thing Somara had pre-cognitive powers to convince me to go with another stalwart figure of the Eighties…Adam Ant. Stalwart? Yes. Probably more in the UK than America yet he had several Top 20 hits up until 1995 and after 1985, Adam took up acting with a guest appearance on The Equalizer and a key role in Slamdance. Besides, PG was $300 to get started, Adam $30, it wasn’t any contest.

We were lucky too. This was a makeup date. The original series of concerts were supposed to be in the Spring (I’m guessing he’d swing through here for SXSW) and Somara remembers why they were cancelled, I didn’t care. I was more excited to see Adam for the third time and at another point in his career. It was Somara’s first.

The opener was a pretty cool. A duo from Brazil called Brothers of Brazil. The singer/guitarist going for the Brian Setzer suave and the singer/drummer imitating the Billy Idol swagger. Their English on stage was so good I thought it was an act. When I met the singer/guitarist at the swag table, no, he had to pause a bit before he spoke. Rather bummed they weren’t staying on through Austin, I feel my current hometown would dig these guys. I bought both of their CDs if you’re interested.

Adam Ant hit the stage on time with his current backup band known as The Good The Mad & The Lovely Posse. Sadly, Adam’s long-time collaborator/songwriter/guitarist Marco Pirroni was absent. He did return to his early Eighties form by having two drummers. From the photo above, you can see Adam is donning the old pirate garb, part Johnny Depp and part Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Despite the “wait” music being nothing but oldies, the concert did showcase new material Adam will have released next year! According to various sites, the new tunes were co-written with Marco, Andy Bell (of Oasis, not Erasure), Chris McCormack and Boz Boorer (Morrissey). I thought they sounded fine, I need the finished, polished project. Few debuts have ever gotten latched into my memory and they’re not always favorite bands.

Of course he did the hits, at least one from every album.

  • Dirk Wears White Socks – “Cartrouble” and “Cleopatra”
  • Kings of the Wild Frontier – “Dog Eat Dog,” “Kings of the Wild Frontier” and “Antmusic”
  • Prince Charming – “Stand & Deliver” and “Prince Charming”
  • Friend or Foe – “Goody Two Shoes” and “Desperate but not Serious”
  • Strip – “Strip”
  • Vive le Rock – “Vive le Rock” (an underrated album in my opinion)
  • Manners & Physique – “Room at the Top”
  • Wonderful – “Wonderful”

It was interesting to hear these without the horns or keyboards many were famous for having rather prominent roles (“Goody Two Shoes,” it’s right there in the bridge!). His new (albeit quite younger) five-piece group was up to the task. Near the end he threw in a T-Rex cover. When I saw Adam in 1995, it was “Twentieth Century Boy.” This year he stuck with the more familiar “Get it on (Bang a Gong)” and he carries it well.

Outside the live performance, the other thrill for me was Adam having copies of his autobiography at the merchandise table. I had one years ago and I lost on the plane ride home from Las Vegas six years earlier! I had gotten to page 50 before misplacing it. Compared to other tell-all books, Adam’s was well written so the option of this being made into a movie may not be a boast. This copy is autographed too!

In closing though, I think I am going to try to stay with assigned seating for any shows I see in Las Vegas. The crowd may have been older like Adam’s contemporaries we’ve recently seen but some must be illiterate if they don’t understand the no-smoking signs. I can handle some shoving in Austin, I live here; when I’m on vacation, I would like to avoid any altercations.

I have really let things slide…

Molly’s terminal illness has really sucked the wind out of me. Usually the day after we get home from vacation is a moderately fun day off taking it easy, unpacking, writing up a couple stories and bracing for work the next day.

Not so this time. Molly looks rather frail and the bloating doesn’t help. We have to give her pain medication with her food too. There have been a couple glimmers of hope, she manages to walk up to the dry food, take a couple nibbles and she is drinking water. I can’t tell if Molly uses the litter box. It’s moments like these it’s good and bad that animals can’t talk. The good would come in handy in how they could tell us how much pain they’re in and when they’re really ready to give up. The bad would knowing in words from them but at least I want to know from Molly if our relationship was mutual.

Don’t think of me as being callous or cheap, I just wish Molly would go in her sleep to spare the pain I experienced second hand from Somara when Wicca slowly faded away in on the vet’s table.

Meanwhile, I’m going break out of the cocoon (Somara’s term for when I’m super-depressed) and see if I can move forward while juggling this gloomy situation. I’m confident there will be hell to pay at work, the more successful Apple gets, the less compassionate I find the decision/policy makers.

We are home and Molly is too

The flight home was relatively uneventful, just choppy on the take-off and landing…there were also a couple bumps during the cruising part. We then took 130 (the toll road on Austin’s very east side) to get to the vet before closing. Made it with 12 minutes to spare!

What followed were the instructions on how to feed Molly with special food via a syringe, give her medicine and the fun task, getting pain meds down her throat.

I did get to see her! Molly appears to be the same, bloated looking with bare patches from the probing/poking. Her personality hasn’t changed…chatty, bossy and feisty. She already chased the other three cats but I’m keeping her locked up in the main bedroom for her own protection.

Tomorrow I get the prognosis with Dr. Todd. So far it hasn’t been cheap. I love this cat very much yet I don’t want to throw money at her problems in vain if Molly will just continue to live in pain for an extra couple months. We’ll manage. The office was nice enough to go with a payment plan. Somara and I are starting re-arrangement the budget to cover the initial $1500 bill.

(virtual) Albuquerque reached!

The Molly development overshadowed this morning’s achievement in the running department, I finally reached the more well-known New Mexican city and again, no, I will not be making a wrong turn like my spirit guide. I’m glad the resort has treadmills in the original workout room in building one, not sure what happened to the three in five (where we’re staying). Thankfully I didn’t have to wait any time! I may have also taken it bit too easy yet I stuck to it.

Next up…my friend Christina’s house near Nashville. I stuck with the general vicinity because I don’t want to violate her privacy by giving a precise address or town. Oh yeah, I found out I’ve made it past the half-way point of the big, overall goal, the distance between our house and the time share in Vegas.

“Go First” dice for the OCD players

The math that went into creating these dice is impressive and I think these could resolve arguments over the initiative phase of D&D. When it comes to people who just casually play board games, I feel courtesy trumps precision. Maybe the developer will get some business from the organizations running diehard, for-money Monopoly tournaments.

There’s a link from The Guardian article to the inventor’s site too. He makes all kinds of cool dice. I already have one with the twelve months.

In case he called in sick…

…we might have spotted Ferris taking a long weekend in Las Vegas.

Molly appears to have cancer

Dr. Todd caught me as I was about to board the elevator (I had been to the pool to cool off after my 3.1-mile run). He said the biopsy came back with cancer cells.

What are the options? Operate, remove the lymph nodes but the cancer may have spread so this could be pointless. Pump Molly full of steroids as we did with Wicca; it will keep her alive until she reaches the point when she can no longer stand it. I have a feeling the latter isn’t looking good because Molly isn’t eating, the staff has to feed her by hand.

I feel terrible too. This all snuck up on us to some extent yet the warning signs may have been there all along.

Molly is my first cat. All others before her were shared and stayed with Mom and Dad when I left for university (as if I could have a cat in the dorms). This is the animal I picked out (or she chose me through her behavior) since I felt I was finally ready to care for a cat from the beginning to the end. I knew the end would come one day for Molly, I just wish I weren’t so soon. Thirteen years is below the average domestic lifespan in my opinion, cancer has cheated me out of more time with Molly.

I’m going to do what I can to finish enjoying our last full day in Las Vegas, try not to be sad at the Happiest Adult Place on Earth™ and post some other cool things, namely Tiny Elvis taking in the sites. Once the plane lands in Austin, it will be time to haul ass to make Molly comfortable.
