Backyard kittens moved by mother or kidnapped

Tonight we came home from Cabin in the Woods and found the four kittens gone. Knowing mama cats, Princess would’ve moved them sooner so I suspect my irresponsible neighbors trespassed into our backyard to take the kittens. Until I know more, I will have to assume the former theory.

Backyard kitten update for late April

They’ve come along in a week since kittens/cats grow rapidly. They still have their blue eyes and are starting to demand exploration time outside of their box.

RIP Dick Clark and Greg Ham

This year’s annual Record Store Day had to kick with sad news via the loss of several people who made significant contributions to Pop/Rock music. I can only relate to two of them. I know the significance of The Band, I just couldn’t get into them.

The first departure was Dick Clark, a man whose career transcended the generational gap between my parents and me. Through the show American Bandstand, I got to check out some acts I was curious about, much like how the folks did in the Fifties and Sixties. Clark’s show had a little pull before MTV became a more dominant force. We usually skipped the other parts, namely watching audience members dancing.

However, by the time I was paying more attention to pop culture, Clark had shifted toward the roles the many really knew him for: a game-show host ($20,000 Pyramid often), host of a blooper show with Ed McMahon (it was funny and exciting at the beginning) and the MC to New Year’s Eve specials on ABC. With the latter, I fondly recall watching him usher in the Eighties. He had a sense of humor about it too. For The Simpsons, he turned out to be a robot when the Y2K disaster hit and his head in a jar hosted Y3K on Futurama.

After his stroke in 2004, it was incredibly sad to see him in such a terrible state. The man was the irreproachable host of anything! Nothing upset the guy. I never recall any scandals involving him like this infamous Casey Kasem meltdown. Despite all the jokes about him being the world’s oldest teenager or purporting schlock, Dick Clark made the world a better place for what he did.

The Onion has a couple pieces about him which I think they nailed it. The first one is a string of clips covering his career over the decades. The last snippet makes me cry because it was sad to see a man who was such a constant in American culture struggling to express his gratitude. Their obit was perfect. They even strengthened my opinion of Clark by bringing up how he and Soul Train founder Don Cornelius eventually became allies to produce programs featuring Black artists.

The other passing seems like a Trivial Pursuit question/answer but 30 years ago, Greg Ham was a member of Men at Work, the hottest Aussie act since Olivia Newton John, LRB, Andy Gibb, the Bee Gees and AC/DC. Through him, the first major wave of Aussie Pop/Rock flooded American radio/record stores: INXS, Mental as Anything, Midnight Oil, Eurogliders, Goanna, the DiVinyls, Real Life, Machinations, the Church, Go-Betweens, Hoodoo Gurus and the Sherbs. (INXS returned the favor by spearheading the second wave in the late Eighties, which also gave a couple of these bands another shot at the American shores.)

Greg’s saxophone solo on their first hit “Who Can It Be Now?” along with his harmonizing vocals clinched it in my memory of what late 1982 was like. However, I will always love Greg’s saxophone on “Overkill” the most. He enhanced the song’s sad, anxious mood conveyed in Colin Hay’s lyrics, thus making it my personal favorite and probably for other people suffering from depression/anxiety. His flute solo on “Down Under” will sadly be what many music experts and historians are going to keep bringing up. It began as a blessing and ended as a curse thanks to a recent court ruling. You can read the details here. Personally, I think Greg got screwed over in light of the eventual vindications awarded in other suits, namely George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” debacle.

When Men At Work’s popularity plummeted, resulting in the loss of the band’s bassist and drummer; it was cool to see Greg remained for the third album Two Hearts, a greatly underrated record I found in a cut-out bin around 1988. Seriously, “Hard Luck Story” and “Man with Two Hearts” are great, they also were a preview of where Colin Hay was headed as a solo artist; Colin continues to produce, tour and appears in Austin about every other year.

I do hope Greg passed away of natural causes. When MTV was reviving the Eighties during the Nineties with a “where are they now” special, I was glad to see that Greg continued to perform around Aussie nightclubs and the Sydney Morning Herald said he was a guitar teacher.

I’m back from a little involuntary respite

Maybe I could say the respite is for everybody out there on the Interwebs since I have been rather prolific with the posts this year. (Nope, seems to be on par with last year. Never mind.)

Well I’m back after being sick last week which was rather annoying. Think about it. I run almost two miles/day, five days a week; take a rather hefty vitamin cocktail; have dropped over 10 pounds this year (I think 15 now); eat much less but more fruit; upped my intake of unsweet tea over diet/non-diet soda…still get “hit by a truck” with a nice cold consisting of aching joints, congestion and the sweats.

The only upside though is the temporary weight loss which is really dehydration and partial starvation; colds tend to suppress my appetite.

The crummier downside is the site languishing and a small backlog of stories, some often get ditched by the wayside.

This go round, I experienced some additional apathy in getting the ball rolling again. The most important order of business was having my running routine re-established (the side widget proves this). Afterwards, a ton of cool events kicked in (read on, or I guess above if you’re on the site, no wait, RSS Feeds are similar) with others to follow.

I am rather stoked about my BMI going under 30 last Friday. Hooray! I was only overweight instead of obese! Something I haven’t been in years. Probably a decade.

Again, stick around, I think this upcoming week will be pretty bitchin’.

It must be for bedwetters

Possibly a leftover remnant from the (overboard) self-esteem movement.

Stars’ third season limps to the end

Today I thought I was only going to be writing about the finale to what became the WORST. SEASON. EVER. Sadly, the front office in Dallas felt even stronger since the coaching staff, aka the Jeffs (Pyle and Truitt) were canned this morning. Too soon in my opinion but that’s why I’m a fan, not the GM. I agree with the rest out on the Interwebs, these two gentlemen have a wealth of experience and they will have new gigs in the ECHL, AHL or even NHL soon.

As for the team, we attended the last home game on Saturday. It was awful. The Stars couldn’t keep up against the Barons and the officiating was horrendous. The referee got in the way of several key plays. Why he ejected our captain Brad Lukowich was beyond me. My team had been out of the running for well over a month so I was already in “let’s get this over with” mode. I enjoy going to the CPC, hanging with friends, seeing familiar faces and I know we can’t win every game. This evening it was painful to watch. Next season will be filled with promise, namely our up-and-coming goalie Jack Campbell! He played for Team USA before joining the Stars on what I think was a PTO contract. Jack is no Richard Bachmann…yet. With the right blueliners, he will pretty awesome.

I’m not going to list which people I think will be splitting. It makes me sad. Yes, hockey is a business but these players are like pseudo family members. More than those on my preferred NHL team because we’ve attended numerous home games (I wish I counted them, I know it’s over 100) and met them in person at social functions. I want to wish those leaving the best of luck, may they continue to keep living their dream playing hockey for a living.

Who do you share your birthday with?

I’m not being lazy, I’m trying to get a conversation starter here. For years I would often post historical, real-world people who shared their birthdays with friends and relatives. The nice lady behind this post compiled a pretty good list of fictional characters’ birthdays. I was bummed that I didn’t find any surprises for me. I already knew about Turanga Leela because I caught the date on the Professor Farnsworth’s time machine during the second or third viewing of the episode. I was hoping for additional characters.

Post away who came up for your birthday. I did look up my brother’s…Homer Simpson! My father…Philip J Fry! There must be a Matt Groening connection between us Maggis!

Our post-rain, back-yard discovery

As I feared, Princess was (or got) pregnant (I’m not an expert on the cat gestation periods). I noticed how she was ballooning up in March and had to adjust her gait while straddling the fence separating the yards. Then one day, Princess was thinner yet continued to drop by to mooch. Obviously she gave birth but we just left it at that.

Today there was a downpour. Somara and I were caught in it shopping for supplies at Costco. Upon coming home, Princess appeared at the front door, doing her usual “I’m cute, please feed me!” routine. While I retrieved a handful of food I heard the offspring mixed in with nearby birds. “They’re pretty loud,” was my reaction…until I saw a kitten in the bushes. This would explain why Princess often springs out of “the jungle” known as the back yard.

Somara braved the rosebush and brambles to retrieve the four kittens while I was setting up nicer, warmer accommodations. They’re a mess. All are covered with burrs, some dirt and crawling with fleas. We’re due for an immediate trip to Petsmart to inoculate Molly, Miette, Nemo and Kuroneko. On the other hand, they’re darlings. I can’t tell how old they are but they’re still in the blue-eyed stage. The white one is the only male, unless I’m dead wrong on determining their genders.

I’ll try not to get too attached. I think they do deserve “working” names. Their future owners are free to change them. We did the same with Kuroneko.

Hoarder car?

I seriously doubt the owner takes this puppy and opens it up on I-35 or MoPac.

Three days of Apple treadmill usage

Proform’s repair contractor doubled my confidence in getting my 505 back online in record time. Firstly, the phone call I received after 9 PM woke me up from an early evening nap, otherwise, I would’ve been late to see Southern Culture on the Skids. Secondly, the tech guy wanted to know if the parts arrived because he was ready to go and willing to work around my schedule: evenings and weekends. I hope didn’t come off as disinterested, I was trying to shake off the sleep.

Meanwhile, I joined the gym at my employer which is a seriously good deal ($4.15 every two weeks and they can deduct it from my paycheck automatically). Why I haven’t taken advantage of this is privacy reasons. I prefer to run without freaking out other people. Somara can confirm the things I say aloud in order to keep pushing myself forward. Nothing weird or foul. Usually it’s how much distance I’ve traveled, how much remains, whenever the counter shows a palindrome, etc. If it keeps me distracted from the exhaustion or pain, I’ll do it.

Apple’s treadmills are industrial strength models. These can withstand dozens of miles per day from people with varying levels of ability. Theirs take a little while to come up to speed; mine jumps to 5.7 mph in a couple seconds, Apple’s gradually climb to this within 10 from my unscientific gauging. Bypassing the programming elements have taken some additional effort too. A major advantage which piqued Somara’s interest are the TV screens on them and iPod jacks via USB. I immediately change the channel to the Cartoon Network. The audio is missing but there are captions. Somara doesn’t care for the cable TV access, she would like to get a loop of some scenery to play to keep her distracted. I will have to see if my ProApps co-workers can oblige.

The other element I’ve had to workaround is scheduling. Two of the three days I’ve run have had to happen after work. Not easy, especially when I’ve eaten several hours earlier. Yet my fear of the weight I’ve lost coming back has inspired me to keep pressing forward. Thanks to Apple’s gym, I am 53 percent ahead of how far I ran by the end of April 2011! This puts me less than 50 miles from Fort Stockton.

Somara doesn’t suffer on the car ride home neither. The gym has a locker room with showers, towels, the whole burrito.

Next update? Probably when the home treadmill is fixed and/or I reach the current running milestone.

Wanda Jackson

Before Southern Culture on the Skids hit the stage, they had two opening acts: Rosie Flores and Wanda Jackson. The latter you may have heard of. Last year she released an album produced by the prolific Jack White. I thought it was pretty decent. Wanda had more credibility on the Amy Winehouse track but I’m biased against artists who are more soap opera than talent. Seriously, if you British Motown wannabes, listen to Duffy and Joss Stone.

I brief honor of meeting Wanda last evening before she left through this photographer/artist who made some posters. He needed assistance in getting some autographs. I think I intervened a tad with Wanda’s helper, he started to get a tad pissed at how many she was being asked to sign, so I told the photographer, “it’s OK, it’s OK,” meaning, let’s cut our losses and not push our luck. Afterwards, I asked him how much the photographer wanted for a poster because I seriously liked his designs…he let me have one for free. We exchanged e-mails too. I hope I run into the gentleman again.

Oh, as for Wanda. I thanked her and asked when she would be visiting us again. The answer was October. She’s a sweet little lady (under five feet tall). This isn’t meant as an insult but Wanda reminds me of an elderly aunt who is enjoying a second wind in a very long career singing Rock n’ Roll, Country, Gospel and Pop. Many call her the Queen of Rockabilly. I’ll agree with this moniker since she toured with Elvis in the mid Fifties.

Well, at least it wasn’t a zombie or vampire

Seen on the back of a MiniCoop, not the flying Hunter-Killer robots shown in the various Terminator movies.

Victory!

Our GWD team finally won! Well, we actually got together or I managed to show up…after an exciting train ride to Crestview. For the quiz, we agreed to check out a new location, Billy’s on Burnet instead of our traditional Mr. Tramp’s. The verdict? I think the greater food selection was great yet I didn’t enjoy having to get my own drinks, I’m lazy.

So in short, we kicked ass! We were in the lead out of the box and maintained it all the way to the end. In past matches, we’ve often choked during the last, general knowledge round because our lead was pretty slim. Besides earning first place, we set a new record score for the venue…88 points. You can see more here. It was also my turn to choose our team name. I tried to go with something topical like others, hence the modified Mike Wallace quote from The Insider. Either I don’t have the talent or the Billy’s crowd isn’t into this as much as the Mr. Tramp’s one.

I hope we regroup next week to defend our title!

Thirteen years at Apple

There’s nothing really new to add that I haven’t covered or blathered on about before. Normally, I take the day off from work to reflect how far I’ve come, how far I want to go, so on, so forth.

I never thought I would be around this long. Why? By the time I was hired on indefinitely, Apple was my seventh full-time employer since I had graduated from university in almost nine years. Believe me, I feared Apple would just be yet another entry on a rather long resume because the company wasn’t totally at the woods. Rather comical to think about nowadays.
