Happy Birthday Brian

My brother celebrates what is considered the answer to the Life, the Universe and Everything today. But it’s Monday so I guess he has to still go to work, etc. He’s probably accustomed to this because we still had to attend school then. There was at least one exception I recall, no wait, two. Both times we were in the middle of moving to a new home so we could goof off in lieu of a party or anything.

Punchies!

Regular Show is definitely an acquired taste (my wife hates it) and a great example of how Cartoon Network is such a frustrating channel. Through Regular, Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball, CN proves how innovative they can be through animation. Then they destroy all hope by filling the remaining time with schlock from Canada: Total Drama insert-word-here, Johnny Test; live-action crap (so much for being a cartoon-based network, Boomerang has this locked down), movies everyone has seen a million times and 15 minutes of commercials for every 60 minutes of programs.

Before I editorialize some more (had to delete out another paragraph when I realized the direction I diverted to), I just want to plug how much this shirt of Mordecai and Rigby makes me laugh. No idea what the exact joke is. However, my memory keeps jumping over to the punchies contest they had, Rigby’s nightmares from a British horror movie and their time playing a WoW-like game.

Girl’s dorm room cliche meets male geek cliche!

When I read the artist’s anecdote about how Gustav Klimt’s famous painting (or is it print?) The Kiss practically graced every other woman’s dorm room when he was in college, I thought he probably went to Marquette. Not likely, most of these people are at least a decade or more younger than I am and likely attended less culturally conservative (polite for backwards), 1977-obsessed institution.

I had to have this shirt though. Firstly, my site doesn’t have many entries for Cool, Funny dominates. Secondly, it’s uncommon for the ‘fury to carry anything in a light color. Lastly, I did need a Han and Leia shirt I can wear in public as opposed to this inappropriate NSFW (or prudes) gag I reserve for concerts.

RIP Jean “Moebius” Giraud

First Ralph McQuarrie, now the legendary Moebius! I double checked to make sure Syd Mead was still alive since we all know the cliche about death coming in threes.

Many of you are probably going, “Who was this French guy?” You’d likely recognize his work if you saw it, just not as suddenly like HR Giger. I think the easiest reference to go with would be The Fifth Element. When I saw this in theaters, beyond the Paul Gaultier-designed uniforms for the McDonald’s staffers (or MacDo’s in French), I could instantly see Moebius’ fingerprints all over the movie, from the aliens to the gear.

Besides concept art for numerous films (Alien, Dune’s failed attempt in the Seventies and Willow, abandoned due to its “weirdness”), he was more memorable to me with his contributions to comics. I’m not talking about the standard long-underwear stuff published by the big two, the man’s named graced the more adult stuff…Heavy Metal and I think Marvel’s imitator called Epic. Initially, I found his work confusing but in my defense, I was a kid and it was the very early Eighties. Comic books hadn’t found their more consistent, mature voice. When I got more into comics, I could tell which pencillers/inkers he influenced. Art Adams and Geoff Darrow quickly come to mind.

To close my eulogy to Moebius, I want to mention that the heavy hitters in comics often have one or two characters they’re synonymous with. Someone the writer/artist makes the superhero his/her own through stylistic touches. For example, Gil Kane? Green Lantern; Joe Kubert? Sgt. Rock; and Jill Thompson? Death. There are some shared by multiple greats: Batman has Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, Jim Aparo, and Marshall Rogers (yes, I do notice a DC bias showing up). Moebius falls into the former group with the Silver Surfer. To me, he was the artist who successfully transformed a goofy concept Stan Lee and/or Jack Kirby probably threw out there to convince West Coast kids they “got” their youth culture (surfing, the Beach Boys); and made the soliloquy-prone herald of Galactus into this trippy, cosmic traveler worth reading/knowing about.

RIP Leslie Cochran

Like me, Leslie came to Austin in the early-to-mid Nineties, however, I didn’t do any cross-dressing on a regular basis.

For those who don’t live in Austin and/or ventured downtown often, Leslie was a well-known homeless guy who wore women’s clothing. I’m not talking about a dress to pass off as a woman; he wore thongs, had a distinctive beard, etc. He certainly drew attention which was his goal by my guess. Leslie was also a perennial candidate for mayor.

In short, Leslie was a partial embodiment of my adopted home’s campaign to stay weird.

More details regarding him can be found here.

Molly joins Nemo’s Prozac regimen

Somara busted Molly today leaving a piss puddle that was as impressive as it was disgusting and irritating. Nemo usually got the bum rap because there was a more solid correlation; bedroom door is closed, Molly is trapped in with us, an hour later, the door opens, there’s whiz in the hallway.

Meanwhile, Molly will be receiving a dosage every evening and morning to alleviate her anxiety, the vet’s theory on why these two have a pissing match. I’ve owned Molly for 12 years, I wouldn’t say she has anxiety, she’s just a bitch and the urinating is her way of asserting dominance and/or anger.

I sure hope this works. I would like to (eventually) start redoing the flooring of said hallway those two damaged.

Here’s an easier quiz: Newt v. Buzz

I would’ve aced this lunchtime trivia from Mental Notes if they used the full, correct quote since I was pretty sure who said it, but I went with the other figuring it was a trick. Hurrumph! Trick was on me. I can still live with my 10/11 score because it would remain an A in college.

I know her 15 minutes are up…

…but I still consider her fair game since she’s on Rupert Murdoch’s payroll, sqwakking away for the Right Wing Noise Machine.

Take the quiz, then watch Beakman’s World

…it has been available on Netflix Streaming for at least a year!

Oh, the quiz. It’s here courtesy of Mental Floss. When cable television exploded from being around 30-40 channels toward to march of a 100-plus, I used to make some effort to catch Beakman (aka comedian Paul Zaloom) while they showed it on this relatively new network called TLC. I don’t know why it as often shown on a Friday night. At least it was pretty early, around 6-8 PM, so I didn’t spend that many evenings watching TV, I went to bars/clubs/etc to strike out with women!

Somara and I watched a few last year. It has still held up, thus I will put it into queue to catch in its entirety…right after Enterprise, Breaking Bad and I think 2011 Doctor Who episodes. There’s no rush, I scored 10/11!

Let’s see if that petition I signed in college really mattered

This weekend, On the Media had a great segment about a site where the author has done all the work for you if you want to get a copy of your FBI (and related) file. I thought what the hell. It ought to be amusing and truthfully, I doubt there’s much present. Have I participated in anything worthy of the government’s attention? I don’t think so: a protest against the gerrymandering in 2003, some petitions I can’t even remember, membership in the ACLU for almost a decade and joking about going to Washington when Reagan’s corpse was out for public viewing and putting a stake through his heart. The latter would’ve been pointless, Reagan had no heart which was why he was a crappy actor. Well, maybe my Van Helsing statement probably got turned into the Feds due to all the Bushevik and Antebellum adherents around Texas.

Again, I don’t expect much. Probably something brief, unflattering yet I’m allowed to fly on planes. Stand by though. I should receive a reply in a month.

Name Steve’s Whatnot

Muppet fans rejoice! From the ashes of FAO Schwartz going down the tubes, Toys R Us gained their exclusivity on the toy I bought Somara at the end of 2008. There’s a slight difference between ours. Somara’s Blanche (the winning name from 2009) has her features permanently glued on: eyes, hair and nose. Mine (codenamed Phil in honor of Phil Hartman because he was an awesome chameleon) has interchangeable hair, eyes and nose plus a mustache. Certainly reminds me of the most popular Muppet Playskool or Fisher Price offered in the Seventies but my brother’s Count was easier to operate than my Bert; that damned poly-whatever stuff, moving Bert’s mouth was a bigger workout than a Nautilus.

Back to my Whatnot.

Besides the interchangeable features from the Toys R Us run, they sell additional outfits which we couldn’t resist. I believe our excuse was find a way to have our nephew Wyatt demonstrate his directing skills by making little movies. You’ll have to wait to see what we picked up and have in mind with Blanche and “Phil.” No wait, the business suit is one since Whatnots are now sold au naturel. Ok, you’ll have to anticipate the remained of their wardrobe. Somara discovered they also can wear baby clothes, ages 6-9 months.

This brings me to the heart of the post. We are holding another contest to see who can come up with the best name for my Whatnot. Last time’s winner was Helen so she’s ineligible, I want to give other people a crack. (Helen, if we acquire a third Muppet, you’re back in the running.) One thing which helps in the judging, have a good story on why the name works. Of course there will be a prize worth $20, unless Helen can remind me on what she received. It won’t be cash, it’ll be in the form of a gift card or equivalent. If you have children, let them try first, their entries tend to be amusing. Finally, post your entry in the Comments section, e-mails and Facebook won’t count.

Good luck and remember, The Muppets hits stores in DVD form on March 20!

RIP Ralph McQuarrie

Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and numerous other Sci-Fi franchises wouldn’t have been the same with Ralph. If the name rings a mental bell, then you may recall his name in those “making of” books showing the concept art and evolutions: Threepio originally bore a close resemblance to Maria from Metropolis, etc.

When I was a kid, I’d often browse through those sketch collection at the mall book stores and think, “Wow, the original Stormtroopers sure looked pretty lame!” Thankfully I grew out of such silliness. I learned to appreciate the creative process, namely the work Ralph did for what was supposed to be Star Trek: Phase II.

Thanks Mr. McQuarrie! My childhood during the Seventies and early Eighties wouldn’t have been as cool without you.

The latest batch of podcasts I’m hooked on

In my haste to hurry up and post that overdue jazz for why I haven’t bothered, I forgot to plug Marc Maron’s WTF show along with all the other stuff I have buzzing through my skull via headphones.

I still catch On the Media most Saturday mornings. I have a degree in Communication from Marquette, I kept my active interest in the subject. Maybe one day Brooke & Bob will come to Austin to do a live show.

Currently I am pushing through a rather great backlog of Sound Opinions. For a pair of Chicago-based blowhards whose tastes in music tend to suck (it “shines” through most often with the Rock Doctors segment), their album dissections have been insightful: Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, The Clash’s London Calling and Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps have definitely made me rethink the content. The more addictive parts have been their guests near the end of 2011: Bootsy Collins, Bob Ezrin (Kiss and Alice Cooper fans know him), Cut///Copy and Brian Eno. Once I’ve listened to these gems, I know I can blitz through the host’s terrible choices on what were the records of 2011.

Sadly, I gave up on Coverville and Astronomy Cast. The latter I could probably get back into because Science is important. The former was impressive yet it became overwhelming. By the time I bailed on it, the host cranked out three shows/week plus let’s be honest, not all covers are good, especially the steaming turds I’ve been subjected to from Glee.

I am digging out with ONN and Mr. Deity. Visual podcasts are trickier since they require more of my attention. ONN you can often get through by listening to them only due to their humor being mostly audio-based. I’m seriously swamped on Mr. Deity but I feel I have cleansed my conscience with its host Mr. Dalton (another former Mormon, seems their disaffected numbers are starting to compete with Jews and Catholics), I finally remembered to send the guy some money.

Now to the new things I will have to find a way to squeeze into 24-hour days…the comedians.

I’ll start with the comedian who I’ve met twice and has always been nice to me (actually, all of them have been friendly in person)…Dana Gould. His show is The Dana Gould Hour. It’s a great mix of discussions with Dana’s guests about a topic, comedy snippets (a dramatic reading of a letter from Brian Wilson’s dad was hilarious) and anecdotes from friends. There’s only two episodes so I would recommend you jump in now if you enjoy comedy. As soon as he has a donation button, I’m putting my money where my mouth is to chip in.

The second podcast is the 800-pound gorilla in my opinion, WTF with Marc Maron. I guess there are other comedians who may have beaten him to the punch and/or have more shows. When Dana Gould make a joke about himself, saying he was no Marc Maron, I felt a little vindicated by my statement. However, Marc’s approach is completely different and proves their room for both hosts. Marc’s show is more along the lines of NPR’s Fresh Air without censorship. Not just the occasional profanity, more often the topics and/or the frankness. It’s no secret that stand-up comics frequently suffer from substance abuse, depression, anxiety and failed marriages but with Maron you’ll hear the more unedited version of the events. Fear not, this topic is less frequent than I may be making it. Conversations tend to be recaps of the guest’s career, funny anecdotes and not much schtick. Not every guest is a comedian neither. Maron has hosted actors (the Bryan Cranston episode was awesome, the man is a great storyteller) and musicians (I’m stoked about the Nick Lowe bit when I get to it). No signs of authors, scientists or politicians yet. Maybe they’ll come in time as Maron’s reputation continues to grow. On the Media has mentioned him and even had him on about joke-telling after the 9/11 attacks. I’m glad to hear he hasn’t lost his edge or spark. Maron was a great co-host during his stints with Air America, the boneheads who ran the network into the toilet were fools to give more air time to Randi Rhodes, Jerry Springer and Rachel Maddow; I’m not against female hosts, Laura Flanders was pretty skilled. Anyway, I threw a few shekels his ways (his choice of word for money). I’m stoked about his upcoming appearance next week. Fingers crossed I can give him a pineapple to ward of the T-Rexes.

Any suggestions from you all? Or should I be ready for the din of “Internet” crickets?

We own the 19%!

Saturday mornings are often “paperwork” time. It’s when I go over the receipts, statements and check all the online balances. I’m glad to say we are really starting to pick up steam on our house. There was a minor setback when we refinanced in 2008…thinking about doing it again to get an even lower rate, we have great credit. I’ll take a lower payment every month since that’ll make owning it easier than rushing to pay it off.

Tonight, I think I will hold a little ceremony with Somara in the latest sector we gained. Have a quick toast to celebrate how we gained this part in nine months while the pace I thought we were on was 10!

Just a general update to kick off March

I took a couple days “off” from the site to de-stress. The results were mixed. Success: got through my third-attempt interview for Support Engineer. Will I land the gig? I have no idea. The odds haven’t been better thanks to four openings though. What I lack in tech, I have in customer skills. The other good part: comic books! Not just Justice League #6 but also Ralph Wiggum and Mrs. Peel & Steed #2 (Marvel owns The Avengers as a publication name in the US). Failure: we had Austin’s Pizza for dinner Thursday (always great), overate and went into a carb coma by 8 PM. Now I need to shake off the kummerspeck (scroll down to #8) through the weekend. Additional failure: I still have a splitting headache which recedes as the day draws closer to quitting time.

What else? This month’s header. I didn’t want to go with the easy St. Patrick’s green stuff, besides, the Green Arrow & Green Lantern picture I remembered from the 1978 DC calendar didn’t fit well. So I went with a nice photo of Marc Maron. Why? He is coming to Austin for the SXSW Interactive section to record an episode of his podcast and the guest will be Jeffrey Tambor! I have tentative plans to see this. I enjoyed his most recent album This Better Be Funny and have been catching up on his podcasts. The latter activity is a bit formidable, Maron releases a show every Monday and Thursday and they run over an hour each.
