Red Wings succeed, farewell Mike Comrie

With a relatively easy victory over the Dallas Stars, the Red Wings are now the record holder for the longest, at-home winning streak. Now the big question will be…can they maintain it and push it out further, thus making it even harder for another team to tie it or exceed it?

My ESPN widget brought up the other sad story. After getting through his third hip surgery, Mike Comrie retired which is a darned shame. Comrie was a pretty good forward when he was healthy. I had the opportunity to see him play live twice. The first game was when we went to Dallas to see the Flyers. Philly had recently acquired Comrie from the Oilers due to a salary dispute, this was the pre-cap days. He scored the only two goals for my team that evening. The other time didn’t really count, it was a PR game in San Antonio when the Phoenix Coyotes became the NHL parent and Gretzky started with a superstar team. Sure, Comrie was traded around in his brief career but I think he could’ve helped at least one organization raise the Cup. He did come close with Ottawa.

Not the Mama!

For his ninth birthday, my nephew Wyatt wanted a dinosaur-based cake. It went over pretty well since you’d think a kid would prefer something resembling Jurassic Park. The dinosaurs are rather funny little toys you squeeze and their eyes bug out.

Happy Lupercalia!

Thanks to Nobleworks for their nasty selection!

Another randy Pagan holiday hijacked by Christianity but I don’t mind the little cards and candy. If the Romans failed to invent this, I’m sure the marketing behemoth in the modern Western Empire would create something to make everybody spend money since the gap between Christmas and Easter is too long.

I’m not bitter though. My memories of this time are often pleasant, even when I was single or sans girlfriend. As a kid it was great because we would get candy, cupcakes and all those little cards from classmates; gotta’ make sure you give those really neutral ones to the girls, don’t want to give them crazy ideas. In Illinois it also meant a short school week since Lincoln’s birthday (Feb. 12) was a day off! Illinois state holiday (I need to ask my nephew if it’s still true or did it get rolled into President’s day). High school and college were unexpectedly mediocre when one would expect it to be dreadful given the hormone and drama level we all experienced from 14-22. Being a gypsy spared me most of the disappointment in the early years, especially after a long-distance crush turned out to be one-sided. I think it was dumb luck that my family often relocated around this time. The University years are another story, practically every weekend is V-Day and somehow college students co-opted Sweetest Day.

Post-college was was a mixed bag. I remember reading a cynical cartoon about 20 years ago discussing Valentine’s Day being the end of the no-break-up zone. The argument went like this: when Thanksgiving kicked off, all relationships get locked down, especially the unpleasant/unhappy ones. Why? After Thanksgiving comes Christmas, New Year’s and the bleak stretch January can be. Dumping your boy-/girlfriend would be pretty heartless. I think the converse was true for the unattached, it tended to follow the job market…not much hiring happens until Spring.

I’m pretty over those things now. I lucked out on marrying a lady with a good sense of humor as the card I gave her proved. Oh, and she’s patient due to our Princess Bride feast tickets being tomorrow. I can think of at least two ex-girlfriends who’d be giving me the evil eye for a week for being “late.”

Blech Monday

My apologies in advance if I come off a little irritable for a while. Last week was a bit exhausting: hockey, Geeks Who Drink (came in fifth!), Somara’s recent health issues and co-workers deserving the fist-of-death.

As Friday rolled in, I was pretty excited about the weekend. I had a fantastic Saturday ready with a nice, take-it-easy Sunday.

  • Get up, run at least a mile on the treadmill.
  • Drop Somara off at work.
  • Hit the Starbucks on 6th and Lamar. Drink coffee, do the books and listen to my favorite weekly podcast…On the Media.
  • Pick up my special order at Waterloo Records, The Princess Bride soundtrack.
  • Have lunch and socialize with fellow alumni at Third Base to watch Marquette.
  • Pick up Somara from work.
  • Drive to College Station to spend the night and celebrate birthday Sunday.

What a great Saturday! I could’ve even written a couple stories for Picayune, namely my next installment on the DC reboot.

Alas, it went all down the crapper Friday evening with the weather. Temperatures were going to hover near freezing. With a little negotiating, Somara gave me permission to let Buttercup stay in the garage and I bundled up. It was all to no avail, I awoke Saturday morning with congestion and a sore throat.

@#$%!

If there weren’t any travel plans and/or children to infect, I would’ve risked enjoying the other parts of the day. Instead, I took it easy, stayed home since we only own one car, slept, cleared pieces of the Netflix queue (American Dad is quite superior to Family Guy which isn’t hard to beat), petted all five cats in my life and had the weekend slip right by. It’s as if the two practically never happened.

Maybe this week will pass pretty smoothly thanks to Valentine’s Day and our Princess Bride feast tickets. It ends with back-to-back hockey games. I find hockey, even when my team loses, makes a rotten day end on a better note. I’m taking Friday off to guarantee it.

Red Wings tie up a record

The Red Wings tied the 20-game-at-home winning streak held by Boston (1929-30) and Philly (1976) which puts them in great company. I’m not entirely thrilled that this came at the expense of my team but we did make it close, 4-3.

I won’t mind the Wings breaking the record tomorrow evening. I only wish it were against another opponent, Dallas doesn’t need another loss. Fear not, I’m not turning into a Stars fan by AHL proxy, I’m just a fan of the coach and players who get promoted.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

A fellow ’68er! Jeff may share a birthday with Peter Gabriel but he’s in great company for the year he was born. Besides me, there’s John DiMaggio, Molly Wringwald, Sarah McLachlan, Anthony Michael Hall and Mark Recchi (I was wrong about Mira Sorvino).

I saw him at work (boo!) and to add insult to injury, I totally spaced on his birthday present (double boo on me!). I’ll have it for him tomorrow. He’ll dig it since in involves one of Jeff’s favorite movies, or least that’s what he said to me.

Mental Floss story on Van Halen’s rider

During my semester with Stardate in Milwaukee, I only got to see pieces of riders for a couple shows…I think Billy Squier’s regarding what to feed the roadies (nothing interesting) and The Motels in the company’s archives. The owner (Randy) understood my curiosity but said not to look at them without supervision. He was more concerned bout the files remaining intact for a tax audit since I was there in the pre-Internet Era.

Van Halen’s rider regarding the brown M&M’s has been legendary. I recall one promoter talking in an interview that the Rolling Stones had their rider say they would gladly take all the brown M&M’s Van Halen left behind.

The fine people at Mental Floss have it posted, probably in light of Van Halen’s latest comeback. Seems pretty reasonable nowadays if you’ve read flash-in-the-pan Katy Perry’s bullshit requirements.

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Promise Part One

It’s a damned shame how awful that live-action version of Avatar the Last Airbender was. Personally, I never saw the point in making it when the entire animated series is readily available on Netflix. Somara and I have watched AtLA from start-to-finish twice, it was impressive; I’m using an acronym because most people think of Cameron’s movie when the word avatar is used.

I’m also curious how the creators got such an intelligent, more sophisticated program to happen with Nickelodeon. Don’t get me wrong, I love their humorous cartoons (Spongebob Squarepants, Fairly Odd Parents and Hey Arnold) yet the network’s other attempts at action or drama are weak: Zoey 101, Big Time Rush (it’s The Monkees for an even dumber crowd), etc. Maybe these are lighter comedies. Regardless, Nickelodeon struck gold with AtLA. My only regret was not catching the show during its initial run but the advantages of having something in its entirety are hard to beat.

Here’s a quick pair of useless trivial asides on why I think you should check out the series if you’ve never seen it:

  • George Lucas must have recognized AtLA‘s talented director Dave Filoni (one of many). You can see much of AtLA‘s martial arts DNA all over Clone Wars when the Jedi Knights and Sith Lord duke it out.
  • Aaron Ehasz was the head writer through AtLA‘s entire run. Before he joined Nickelodeon, he used to be Futurama‘s story editor in the Aughts and a staff writer for Mission Hill and Ed. Ehasz chipped in two episodes for Futurama during its most recent season too.

Meanwhile, the long awaited sequel The Legend of Korra hasn’t debuted. The last time I checked, I thought it was supposed to appear last Fall. I guess I was wrong. It won’t matter to me since I refuse to pay for cable which is $75/month to watch advertising 30 percent of the time. Yes, I know this helps pay the bills when creating content, it’s just gotten out of hand over the last 30 years.

Enter the fine people at Dark Horse Comics. They must’ve recognized the need to fill the gap with this first installment called The Promise which is set days after the series concluded.

SPOILER ALERT!

As everyone knows, The War ended with Aang’s victory over Fire Lord Ozai and when Korra starts (eventually), it will be a 70 years later. In Korra, the people of the four nations are more heterogenous than they used to be in Avatar, benders are less common and the everybody has adopted more of the Fire Nation’s steampunk (or Victorian era) technology. The Promise explains what happened in between.

The story opens shortly after the victory ceremonies. With the Fire Nation’s surrender and Prince Zuko becoming the new ruler, Aang must proceed on bringing balance back to the world. First order of business, Earth King Kuei requests the removal of all the Fire Nation colonies on the Earth Kingdom’s west coast. Aang and Zuko agree. A year later, Zuko begins to renege on this due to an older colony named Yu Dao. Unrest between the Fire and Earth citizens quickly reaches a breaking point requiring Aang’s attention with Sokka, Toph and Katara in tow. Seems peace is more complicated when two warring people have intermarried over several generations.

Little does Aang know, Zuko has been privately speaking to his imprisoned father Ozai over the fate of his mother. Knowing Ozai’s scheming mind and Zuko’s emotional vulnerability, Ozai is manipulating the contentious peace settlements.

So far I like where this is heading. The artwork follows the animation’s style guide unlike the inconsistent Lost Tales collection (a mixed bag) which will appease fans, children and others wanting such consistency. Writer Gene Luen Yang is spot on with the personalities (namely Toph), I guess he was a fan. Now I just need to hold out until May for part two.

I highly recommend The Promise part one for all AtLA fans. The $11 price tag may be the only objection. If you live near me, you can ask to borrow my copy.

Kari! Don’t press that button!

A cool marriage between the Cartoon Network’s first (I think) original series and the Discovery Network finding two people who made scientific fact-checking cool. It’s often cheaper to buy shirts from Teefury in bulk but I had to get one for my friend/co-worker Ben because he’s a fellow fan of Dexter’s Laboratory.

A string of birthday wishes, mostly belated

I don’t plan on making this a trend like my in-laws do with celebrating birthdays, they lump everybody who shares a particular month into one gathering…as we’ll be doing next weekend (knock on wood with Somara’s health).

Let’s start with today, TJ, the eldest son of the Silders. He hits what is considered official teenager status. I guess. I figured high school is the real decider, not a suffix. Good luck to him on it, he’ll be fine though. I haven’t heard any serious complaints regarding my nephew Nick who hit said barrier last year. Helen only gets a little upset when I rib her over the million-dollar-towel jokes.

Now the people I’m really tardy with.

Lester, my gaming sensei and poet extraordinaire had his special day last week. In his honor, I contributed 10 smackers toward a new governor. As a fellow Marquette alumnus, I must apologize, or maybe not, the jerk didn’t graduate.

Earlier in this week was my brother-in-law Aaron and his middle son Wyatt. Somara and I will be wishing them well in person Saturday and/or Sunday. It’ll be my first trip to Aggieland (aka College Station, TX) for some time. Hopefully, the kids are excited about the 43-year-old fatso uncle visiting to play Pathfinder and video games with ’em.

Somara is much better

I know I didn’t make any mention of this earlier but there’s never been any need to worry, Somara’s current illness or condition has been manageable. Today, the doctor was able to alleviate the situation further so she won’t miss any further work.

Drop her a line directory or through my site to wish her a super-speedy recovery.

Meet Buttercup!

Tybalt continues to show up on our driveway several times a week, it depends on the weather but this recent stray has been poking around on the back porch. She’s very small, quite tame and extremely affectionate. I named her Buttercup from The Princess Bride which I’m trying to read (again) plus as I’ve blathered on before…2012 is the 25th anniversary of the movie (we have tickets for the Valentine’s Day Feast!). Within hours, Buttercup has “trained” me to reply to her timid little mewing. She prefers to reside on the other side of the fence which makes me ponder about her feral status. Somara said I can get into serious trouble if I have another person’s cat neutered. Ergo, I need to ask around DeMaret Street to see if anyone claims Buttercup as a pet or nuisance. Then will come the process of finding her a loving home. Molly already goes bananas from Buttercup’s scent on my hands.

Fellow Austinites, post and/or contact me should you be interested. I have put out a litter box to see if Buttercup knows how to use it.

My Stars’ chances are slipping away

The Stars’ losing skid has been happening for so many games, I’ve lost track…four I think? Either way, last night was another disappointing loss to the Charlotte Checkers and two more points they can’t regain. I haven’t lost all confidence in them yet. Over 20 games remain which can make all the difference for who gets to be the number eight or 11th seed come April.

Their defeat wasn’t all bad. Newly acquired Angelo Esposito scored a goal (not sure if he’s related to the more famous Phil and Tony brothers).  Tousi had a comical recovery: I think he was trying to check someone, missed, spilled over the board into his team’s bench, hopped right back up, exited through the gate and continued to skate the remainder of his shift. It was so incredibly fluid. I suspect Tousi has been practicing since juniors. Finally, I saw my first live 5-3 short-handed goal courtesy of veteran Stars forward Travis Morin (he also leads the team on assists and all-time in points due to Greg Rallo leaving for the Rampage/Panthers). It was awesome but not enough to force the game into OT.

This season being pretty weak better pay off for Dallas.

Belated reflection about Austin Arrival

Matters at work and elsewhere were rather busy for me, I made a little Day One entry about the occasion, left it at that. Somara’s recent illness has distracted me a tad plus we went out for dinner before going home. This was followed by turning off my brain via Netflix; almost done with the core run of American Dad, aka Family Guy 2.0.

The biggest, most uplifting matter was having a meeting with the hiring manager for the job I didn’t land. It was nice to know the decision was tight because the group will be adding at least two more positions, ergo, I could cinch it next time. Emphasis on could. Yet it’s a decent feeling along with the encouragement I received on auditioning to join a parallel engineering team nicknamed Response (it’s another layer of support dedicated to the phone people, less customer interaction).

Meanwhile, last year was the horrendous snow storm in Austin, something we experience once or twice a decade. The bigger crisis was our lack of water for three days. Thankfully our pipes didn’t burst but boy did I reek until we spent the night in a hotel. I skipped taking a shower for 48 hours…tops. I wasn’t undertaking any strenuous exercise to keep the sweating down. How I wish the frozen lizard I stumbled upon thawed out and got revived. Poor creature, it got killed pretty suddenly during the night, probably looking for bugs to eat.

It’s hard to believe how quickly 18 years have zipped by too. All those “kids” I met while working at University Towers when I arrived are now 36. Many probably have their own families with children in grade school. Too frightening to think about at great length, namely the spoiled assholes who I figure are working on various GOP campaigns to bring back the Gilded Age.

Things are looking up! Work has one silver lining remaining. Good shows are coming to Austin outside of the annoying SXSW (Thomas Dolby is playing, damn it!). Our GWD team will giving the regular Wednesday night game at Mr. Tramp’s a try, yet I must bow out for the Seinfeld or Whedon rounds. I don’t mind the former, despise the latter but am ignorant of both. How I would like another Futurama attempt to redeem myself.

Now I remembered the thing nagging me at the back of my mind…we lucked out on getting tickets to the Princess Bride feast and quote-along. It’s not on Valentine’s Day but the day after which is close enough for me. Alamo Drafthouse better do some non-feast screenings too, I would like to geek out sans the $48 meal.

More-focused posts will follow. I promise.

Happy Groundhog Day

The recruiter saw her shadow so that means I have to re-apply for the Support Engineer gig again in six weeks. It’s a pisser but not really a surprise after all my years of service with Apple, I’ve often been passed over especially when a less qualified or experienced person is in the running.

However, the competition was pretty tight this go round and I wasn’t fretting it too much. The group is also looking to expand so I will give this a third time before my self-imposed deadline arrives in 170-some days. Deadline? Yeah, I think 13 years as an Apple employee is long enough and I need a new challenge…besides getting a comparable salary. One thing I really want to strive for is a position in which I get to use the computer a tool for the job, not the other way around.
