Thomas the Tank Engine 2009

eddie3cake

A co-worker/friend has a son who is at that age when he is completely fascinated with trains and cars, thus he wanted a birthday cake designed with the Thomas theme. I’m not knocking it. I fondly remember my brother and me having the same borderline obsession, guessing which color the caboose would be while waiting at a crossing in Macomb, IL.

Somara put this one together with relative ease. I was a tad worried because I’m accustomed to her starting much earlier. She didn’t fret though. Thomas is a common design at her former employer HEB but Somara threw in the correct touch she said most grocery stores skip: the frosting-based railroad tracks. Apparently it’s a time-consuming effort so they tend to be drawn on with an airbrush for speed/efficiency. Remember, your local grocery store has to crank out a bunch per day while Somara gets to put that necessary, extra effort on one. I do hope Ayako (the customer/friend/co-worker) found it as delicious as she was visibly delighted to see it. To me, the appearance can be wiped out if it tastes terrible. I’m confident it was great…I usually “sample” the leftovers.

Belated birthday to Owen

What a rotten trend I have with this little guy’s birthday. I guess the Fourth holiday weekend keeps throwing me off despite it staring there in my face via Now Up2Date. Well, I hope Rad’s oldest son/child had a great time with cake and other things three-year-old’s dig. He’ll have to wait a couple more weeks before the new Green Lantern movie arrives on DVD.

Vegas 2009 and Fiscal Year 2010

July 1 is the beginning of the Fiscal Year in the Maggi Republic. Back in 2006, that’s about the time I took over all the finances to ease the pressure on Somara; her job with HEB was stressing her out and it was easier for me schedule everything, namely refinancing all the Sallie Mae jazz. Somara was initially reluctant. I didn’t blame her because we both are the oldest children, proud and more independent-minded thanks to getting married later in life than most couples. Both of our expectations worked out within the first year though. Thanks to my financial planning, many matters were on track, namely Sallie Mae. As a gesture in the other direction, we got our Vegas timeshare together and last Summer, I had the house refinanced with her name on the paperwork; I bought the house myself in 2001 since we weren’t married at the time.

Earlier this week, we went out to dinner to lay out the long and short-term plans for the new Fiscal Year (my alma mater Marquette also used July 1). We agreed on some key plans: a new car in the next 12 months; the third student loan remains the main debt to pay off which will be followed by the timeshare, not the final loan; the continuation of Alexandria; all the cats getting their annuals and new glasses for Somara along with the dentist. We’ll revisit new iPhones (3G S models) in the second half and I think the 47″ Vizio TV is on indefinite hold. Oh yeah, with a car replacing my aging VW or her truck, we would then put together a longer vacation in 2010 to drive through IL and WI. Somara has never really seen Chicago and Milwaukee so she’ll my special tour which will be partially biographical.

Most is the FY ’10 Plan will depend upon the outcome of our upcoming vacation to DC (in about a week!) with the Silders. I’m hoping to make an October trip to Las Vegas to treat my friend Nelson to some fun for his 40th birthday. We have over $1000-worth of MGM vouchers and the city is desperate for visitors in the Bushevik Economy; I get offers for cheaper stays at Luxor, Mirage and TI every couple weeks. All I would need to cough up is a plane ticket.

Yesterday morning Chase and MGM decided to put a huge wrinkle into a large part of the Plan. After four years, they’re ending their relationship so no more MGM Fun Money (vouchers) which rocked when we went in 2008 because we barely had to spend any money on food or trinkets. Chase says my MGM card will become a plain Freedom card on August 31. Thus, if I don’t redeem the MGM vouchers by then, they’re converted to the other crud. I wasn’t thrilled as my Facebook blurb (poor man’s Twitter) stated. I looked over some options like a Southwest point thing (pass, $60/year fee!), another with Toyota (any kind of “voucher” for a car is a drop in the bucket), etc. I figured I would let Chase make their case when I called them next week. Trust me, we consumers have more leverage on them than you think, especially if you have my stellar credit record of the last decade. I remember how I got them to pull the rate down by five points on it a few years back. As everything has dipped, our card has a low, single-digit rate due to my strategies (paying it in full often and paying online). I would hate to give it up. Again, we have the advantage since it costs credit card companies an average of several hundred dollars to gain a customer. Our household is one of their most reliable too. I doubt they want to cut us loose with the losing horses they gambled on recently.

I did have some time to go over the brochure on the Freedom card with the accompanying Website. It may be a better successor. We’ll get an equal exchange on the points but we can redeem as few as 1500 toward gift cards, namely iTunes which I know everyone enjoys. There’s even cash at 5000 ($50) so we could make that our “throwing around” money in Las Vegas at the craps table. The MGM vouchers didn’t cover gambling…hmmm.

Either way. Nelson giving the red or green light on the trip will be a the deciding factor yet I have a feeling my conversation with Chase’s credit card division is going to pan out well, unless they’ve gone with call centers in Bangalore. Salllie Mae always ends with a supervisor request so I always dread calling them. I stayed with Chase over Citibank and BoA primarily for the conversations I had with their American employees in FL and MO. The Alleged Free-Trade Noise Machine can suck it because they forgot how time is money.

Onward Fiscal Year Plan 2010! It should result in a new Yaris, three paid-off student loans and/or near-complete ownership of our Las Vegas pad.

Brian Boucher rejoins the Flyers again!

My all-time favorite goalie (since I started following hockey more carefully) has returned to the Philly fold yet again. Boucher is some kind of prodigal son the Flyers organization keeps taking back. It was rather crappy of the Sharks to let him go. Based upon his stats and what little news I could get about a West Coast team (never mind them being a frequent opponent of the Dallas Stars), I felt he did a great job as the backup the rather volatile, fickle Nabokov (who wasn’t to blame for San Jose’s shocking exit in the playoffs…for once). When I read about the Sharks making an offer to Thomas Greiss as backup, I knew BB was out. Dick move General Manager Doug Wilson.

It wasn’t a huge loss to me. Roenick won’t be playing for them either so I no longer have any stake as the Sharks’ success which makes ambivalent with the Western Conference again. Only exceptions will be me cheering against Colorado, Anaheim and Calgary (until they ditch Todd “Should-be-banned-for-Life” Bertuzzi). I have to grudgingly support Dallas because they’re the parent team of my AHL franchise. I’m also starting to sweat my season tickets after reading about the MLB organization loaning the Stars’ owner money. I’ll find out soon enough.

Back to Brian Boucher!

This is his third stint with the Flyers. Obviously his first was after they drafted him in 1995 and he went on to be their starter in 2000. He helped get them all the way to the Eastern Championship but it was New Jersey’s year. Then came two years of first-round eliminations with 2002 being the humiliating sweep by the Ottawa Senators. Rumor has it Boucher was one of the people advocating the firing of Head Coach Bill Barber. Whatever he hoped to achieve by being involved surely backfired. Cechmanek got the starting job and to assure the Slovakian addition, Boucher was traded to Phoenix. Despite being on a horrible team, he went on to break record for the longest, continuous shutout streak of five-plus games in a row which is over 300 minutes. I watched him do it against Minnesota on TV.

Things went downhill shortly after this milestone. He lost out the starting gig with the Coyotes too. They sent him to San Antonio until dumping him on Calgary. Then he backed up Chicago’s overpriced Russian and played in Columbus.

He returned to Philly in 2007 as a free agent yet it was with the Phantoms, where he got his start in the late Nineties. I was thrilled. I figured he’d play well enough to make an appearance once a month for the frequently injured Niitymaki. Instead he got a chance to play for the Sharks and took it. Nobody in Philly blamed him.

Now both Biron and Nitty are gone, the psycho Emery will start for 2009-10 and the Phantoms have moved to New York thanks to the Flyers selling them to owners with ties to the Penguins. The good news is having Boucher as backup to Emery. I have a good feeling he has a strong shot at being the starter. Emery hasn’t grown the hell up no matter what the flaks say and the fans will be shouting “Bouuusshh!” when Brian is in the pipes. Emery will probably get “you suck!”

Of course, the Philly organization had to spoil this tidbit of hope by replacing two 20+ goal scoring forwards (Lupul and Knuble) with Ian LaPierre. The former Colorado player is known for his frequent trips to the penalty box. As my Detroit-fan friend said, the guy tends to win fights by leading with his face.

Four years of Picayune as a ‘blog

Around this weekend four years ago, I took the overdue plunge to have my “magazine” converted from plain HTML-driven website to ‘blog driven. Hopefully it has been worth it for everyone who reads. I tried to keep it civil, open and more along the lines of a magazine and/or letter. Web-based stuff can been trickier when good ol’ print was impressive: designs, layouts, graphics, fonts, etc. It’s much like making the shift in art/packaging for 12″ albums to the 5″ CDs. Course vinyl is making a comeback…if you believe those two windbags in Chicago.

Backing up went quite quickly yesterday at work too. Everything on the Mini squeezed down to 42 GB. The trickier part would restoring everything right after I make one new post. I definitely need to look into a solution for the SQL element (Jeremy said this is how WordPress operates).

This morning was a bit more trying…upgrading from WordPress 2.7.1 to the current 2.8. I have to relearn that every time since I’m always behind the curve there. Once I had everything in its proper place, the creator pulled through on one major peeve I was having in 2.7; every time I wanted to change the color to a link’s text, it would change the size of the type instead. Originally I thought it was the new Safari 4 but downgrading to 3.x or trying Firefox 3.x proved to be futile. Safari 3.x on a 10.4.11 system worked yet I wasn’t going to do an Archive & Install on my MacBook for a relatively minor stylistic issue. The next part I’m watching for is my collapsing archive element continuing to be rendered properly too.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend. I know I’m going to try. My first vacation of 2009 kicks off in about a week! There will be more stories until I have to get on the plane.

Probably one of Kuroneko’s dreams

catcakejuly

This was a birthday cake for our friends the Simmons. As you can see, this kitten has bitten off more than she can chew. Somara wanted to make a realistic-looking cat but she said it wasn’t possible with the materials involved. I think it wouldn’t be edible anyway.

Underneath the frosting of “yarn” is a very chocolate cake with a raspberry-chocolate filling. Quite rich stuff because I got to have the leftovers, really carvings and excess from this. Heck, I feel a zit coming on just writing about it.

Meanwhile, when Kuroneko is sleeping (rarely), I imagine she’s dreaming of a giant ball of yarn to roll around and eventually getting tangled up into.

Free Agency for Philly stinks this year

First the signing of the cancerous Ray Emery…

Then the trade involving Chris Pronger which could result in some ugly press…

Now Mike Knuble has left to play for the Capitals, leaving a huge hole in my team’s offensive capability on the RW position since Lupul went to Anaheim.

Admittedly Knuble was a late bloomer and when the Flyers picked him up from Boston my initial reaction was, “Who’s this guy again? How is he going to replace John LeClair and Tony Amonte?” Despite some rocky times, Knuble was a diamond in the rough and he was one of the best players during the 2006-7 season, aka the meltdown. Did Holmgren reward him? Nah, he’ll probably sign someone worse for more money because that’s what Bobby would do.

I think Clarke’s influence did extend to Chicgao today regarding Marian Hossa. No one with half a brain signs a forward to a 12-year contract. A goalie or a defenseman? Maybe. Never a forward.

Those season tickets for the Austin Stars can’t get into my hands soon enough. I’m going to continue being a Flyers fan yet I think I may suspend my support until next year, if this roster nightmare continues.

Should they land Dany Heatly, then I definitely want to be awakened.

A scene from the next AVP movie

aliengirlie

It's soooo cute! I just have to hug the tiger! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

By adding the pink bow to let you know the Alien is a girl, this will reach out to the important 12-25 female demographic who are into Hannah Montana and the stuffed tiger covers the 3-11 year olds.

Maybe the joke is funnier just as a picture.

My co-worker Daniel recently scored this groovy Alien action figure. I thought it was the original one from the last Seventies due to its size but I was wrong due to its articulation at the ankles, knees and hips. To display his latest acquisition, Daniel put it up where everyone could see it. I’m not sure where the little tiger came from yet he positioned it like the picture shows. Then I had to throw in the feminine touches because I keep hearing Mila Kunis speaking: she’s yelling at Ashton Kutchner to buy the stuffed toy. Mila Kunis? If you’ve seen the blind-date skit on Robot Chicken, then you can imagine it.

Happy Birthday Rad!

My cool friend in Phoenix shares his birthday with the birth of a country, our northern neighbor Canada. I would recommend you sing “Happy Birthday” instead of “Blame Canada” though. Then again, I think I’ve accumulated a string of better songs to celebrate, especially the cool track The Bird & The Bee did on their latest album.

I do hope he has an awesome day with his wonderful wife Kim and neat kids Owen and Kylie. Rad is definitely one guy I’ve always been glad to have in my corner, especially when the homeless dude in Milwaukee made a weird, sudden move on me in 1993. I knew Rad had some moves, I just didn’t want to see him demonstrate a roundhouse kick through a strangers head.

If you know the Radman, drop him a line and wish him bon anniversaire!

Picayune maintenance this weekend

In light of the upcoming holiday weekend, I will be taking my Mac Mini offline Thursday night or Friday morning to back it up. Something I haven’t done since Memorial Day. I promise to have it back up and running by Saturday so you can spend the remainder of the three-day weekend reading/posting. I can hope.

Well, Somara and I will be finally giving out the overdue results of our Name the Muppet contest afterwards. Not a bad idea to celebrate my site’s fourth anniversary in its Blog incarnation.

I think I’ll make the shift to WordPress 2.8 too. Anything to get rid of the annoying HTML formatting gripes I’m experiencing when I try to make the text another color, namely links.

New stuff worth upgrading over

Yeah I’m rather late to shill on about my employer’s latest line-up shifts but only recently have I had an opportunity to see the new MacBook Pro 13″ and iPhone 3G S in action.

Back when the MacBook was moved over to the unibody like its larger Pro siblings I was only disappointed by its lack of FireWire ports. USB 2.0 is a joke. Only boobs at Fry’s and the Geek Squad truly believe it’s faster because anything developed by Apple can’t be any good despite all those distinctive, white earbuds you see everywhere. Then Apple revamped it by moving the 13″ portable into the Pro line which means a more expensive APP to cover it but I got my FireWire port back, even if it’s the 800-speed kind. You can purchase an 800-to-400 cable at Fry’s of all places. Thanks to this and its improved battery performance, I may make the push to sell off this MacBook before its APP expires. Any takers? I’m thinking $500 OBO. It has 2GB of RAM and 250 GB HD when it originally had only half the memory and one third the drive space.

Meanwhile, the new iPhone 3G S does live up to the publicity. Two friends of mine scored them. My current 3G is fine as a phone and its core feature. I just have a little envy over the built-in video camera. During its release weekend, I wish I had one to capture footage of Akuma (a neighborhood cat) getting attacked by a mockingbird. Jeremy was nice enough to let me operate his enough to experience the improvements in in speed too. Alas, Somara and I can’t make the move without hefty penalties until April 2010. I will definitely consider it next Spring.

Puts my aging car into perspective

Once again, some major credit goes to my friend Mark for notifying me on this web site called There, I Fixed It. You will see some frightening pictures of people “repairing” objects from cars to furniture and other creative means for moving cargo.

More proof that the upcoming Era of Idiocracy will soon be upon us.

RIP Billy Mays

It has been a busy week for the obit pages. They usually say death comes in threes but either it starts over due to it being a new week or maybe there’s a range of days to envelope it in. I’ll go with it coming it fours this once.

Now I really regret the opportunity I missed to see him do his thing at the monstrous HEB Somara used to work at. I can’t remember what he was promoting yet I didn’t care, he was one of the more memorable pitch guys plugging a product which actually worked. Trust me, Somara used the Oxyclean material on her culinary school/bakery uniforms with great success.

It’s time for the annual Lucky Jeans sale

Not only is blistering hot this Summer in Austin (over 100 F/40 C today), June has been a blur for 2009. I can hardly believe next weekend will be the Fourth of July but I’m excited about our first vacation of the year starts in two weeks and we’ll be on the plane in 17 days!

The good part about the nation’s birthday is my tradition to score a pair of jeans from the Lucky Brand Store at the Domain with an Apple Store across the street: Somara does need a new wetsuit for her iPhone.

I want to recommend their jeans, so much I’m plugging them in my website because I prefer them. They’re definitely an incentive to get my weight down since they don’t go beyond 40 in men’s sizes. I got on the scale this morning and I’ve been managing to stay under 225 this quarter which is a good thing. The objective is to finally get under the 220 mark before New Year’s. I do admit the upcoming Wii Fit Plus is another possibility to help me achieve this.

Go to their official site to find a location. You can usually find them at your regional mall, if you live in a decent-sized city.

Jun 29, 2009 Update: Looks like my weight loss is progressing! I could comfortably fit into a pair of 36s instead of the traditional 38s I’ve bought in the past.

Someone has stolen Bobby Clarke’s brain 2

Chris Pronger? Once again, my team has decided to bring on another aging All Star whose expiration date is nearing: Hatcher, Forsberg, Hackett and Nedved quickly come to mind.

My personal guess is this is what was racing through GM Holmgren’s mind: Philly wouldn’t get squat in the first round of a mediocre draft and then the salary cap only got raised by $100,000. Philly’s chances in the upcoming Jay Bouwmeister Derby evaporated right there. So now we’ve taken the (alleged) Casanova of Edmonton to fill the defensive holes we’ve had since Desjardins and Johnnson were shown the door.

This did send my Detroit-fan friend to write me a tirade which included insulting Obama. I oddly replied calmly and (hopefully) thoughtfully back that we should relax. Like Emery, Pronger only has one year remaining on his contract. If he doesn’t produce, he will be a free agent looking for a new team. Plus he needs to prove he’s good because Philly fans are very fickle, they practically helped Forsberg pack his bags when Holmgren dealt him to Nashville. I had to remind him about Detroit’s lack of class when they took Todd “Attempted Murderer” Bertuzzi off Florida’s hands in a failed run for the Cup in 2007.

I guess this makes me a poor fan by not getting my blood up too high on this and politely seeing a silver lining (his brief tenure). I mean, I’m not pleased with this acquisition. Pronger is a tough, dirty player, even by NHL standards. Yet he’s a good D-man who helped Edmonton and Anaheim go the Cup. The last thing I want to see though, is Pronger crushing Cindy Crosby’s nose with his elbow. The Penguins are a bunch crybabies but I don’t want to see anyone seriously injured, including hated rivals.
