Happy 9th Birthday Miette & Molly

Today is the day we designated their birthdays since neither cat has a known date. Molly’s estimated age was given to us through the shelter, making it the more “accurate” one. As you all know by now, Miette was a feral cat so her age is a guesstimate through our vet’s assessment of her teeth. Sadly, today would’ve been Wicca’s 17th birthday. We still miss her every day, especially when we see a black female cat at Petsmart; Somara and I are resisting the temptation of adopting a new fourth cat despite Nemo wanting a more lively playmate.

I know Molly has been getting all the iMovie attention but give it some time, Miette takes more effort to catch doing something amusing. It will probably be her chasing the laser pointer or a toy. Despite being feral at birth, she isn’t aggressive with strays in the yard and her bullying of Wicca ended quickly after Nemo entered the picture.

Happy 80th Birthday Gordie Howe!

Mr. Hockey himself! The picture is from the day before because I suppose the Red Wings didn’t play today. One thing I did learn from Wikipedia about him today was that despite Gretzky surpassing his record on goals and points in the NHL or NHL-WHA combined, Gordie will always have the most professional games under his belt at 2421, NHL and WHA combined. It’s doubtful the world will ever see another player have a career as long as his despite all the jokes about Chris Chelios. Still no news on the alleged movie about his days in the WHA lately.

Overdue Highlights of Austin’s last win

Sure the Austin Icebats were eliminated from the playoffs last week with a 1-0 defeat in Odessa. But as I stated, I scored some decent highlights/features of their only game in Austin, which they won in overtime. Tomorrow night though is the end-of-the-season or thank-you-fans party at D&B. Free wireless access, NHL Center Ice on their numerous TVs, decent food and games; the place is perfect for computer-savvy hockey fans! Meanwhile, I finally whipped together the those highlights which I hope to show the players, should I get to talk to them. Enjoy, hopefully my iMovie skills are improving.

I kept the original audio on this because I made a more conscious effort to be quiet and succeeded in capturing the crowd’s jeers, praise and excitement. Most of it’s funny and amusing.

Despite the craziness, I hope to be a delegate again

Several weeks ago, I attended my first Texas Democratic Caucus, had I known they existed before, I would’ve been going since the year I moved to Austin. But as everyone knows, Texas hasn’t bothered with the process in a generation because the candidates have usually been “chosen” by Iowa, New Hampshire and a half-dozen other smaller states (which don’t reflect America completely). Several weeks ago, I got the opportunity to be one of the 21 pledged delegates (I could change my mind) to attend yesterday’s Travis County Democratic Convention. There my precinct and dozens of others would select one or more delegates to attend the statewide convention in April. The state convention elects who goes on to Denver this Summer.

How was it though? An utter madhouse but worth the rare opportunity. Someone said in 2004, 1300 people showed and wrapped up by 11 AM. This time, 6613 registered delegates came resulting in a huge traffic jam on Decker Lane. The entry deadline had to be extended to 1130 AM (from 10). It was like a crazy, disorganized rock concert because I paid three bucks for a package of M&Ms!

What was I exactly doing for 11 hours? After the hour it took to receive my credentials (above), I spent another 30 minutes hunting down where my precinct sits. Once this was found, I escorted anyone I recognized from the precinct 227 caucus (regardless of candidate) to our spot. While wandering around, I bumped into my state senator (and former mayor of Austin), Kirk Watson. Yes, I’m that much of a political geek, I know who my state senator AND statehouse representative are (Dawnna Dukes). When I walked by him, my brain was cloudy from the lack of sleep which put me in a state of bewilderment; “I know this guy yet I can’t put it together!” He patted me on the shoulder and said, “How’s it going guy?” Serves me right for not stopping to get a latte on the drive down. The rest of the time, I was usually in my area socializing with fellow Obama supporters. We weren’t unfriendly to the Hilary camp, I just guess they were busy or something. We just had the one allocated delegate position locked up for our candidate.

The convention floor at 830 AM

The floor at 930 AM

The floor after 1030 AM and it remained like this until late afternoon

As the county officials pieced together the rules, various celebrities of the Democratic Party spoke at the podium to keep up the energy: Kirk Watson, Lloyd Doggett (the congressman Tom DeLay failed to eliminate in the 2003 redistricting power grab), candidate Larry Doherty (running for Congressional District 10), candidate Rosemary Lehmberg (running for Travis DA), former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk, former DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe (specialist extraordinaire at losing elections) and the one everyone could agree on, actor Sean Astin. Yes, Frodo’s gardner, former Goonie and plucky underdog Rudy came to rally the troops. He was too far away to get a decent picture, argh! The bulk of the speeches were calls for unity despite some backing one candidate or another. There was rhetoric. Not like it’s hard pointing out this administration’s numerous failures. Cheney’s arrogant answer of “So?” certainly doesn’t help defend it.

There I am with my precinct! Thanks for the picture David.

I apologize for the partisan jab. I want to keep my site apolitical but Bush and company deserve the majority of the criticism and scorn it receives. Especially if you’ve seen the latest episode of Frontline on how Iraq became a mess. How there remains a fraction of Americans, varying between 25 to 33 percent, completely loyal to the most petulant president in history is mind boggling.

The convention was awesome though. I can only hope the enthusiasm contained in the Expo Center can be maintained until November and beyond. Regardless of party, the American people need to be this involved during every election cycle, not just when the nation is a divided mess.

The Powerpuff Girls: The Complete First Season

Time-Warner finally gives the Cartoon Network’s first major hit the proper DVD treatment! Yes, I know this came out last Summer but I only watched it all the way through recently and 2008 is the 10th anniversary of the show’s debut; the two shorts in the Mid-Nineties don’t count because it wasn’t an ongoing series. On the two-disc set (painted to look like Blossom’s eyes) are all 13 episodes, the two shorts I mentioned earlier, all the promos CN did at the time and a good trove of extras (more on these later). I guess Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends hasn’t been around long enough for Craig McCracken’s other creation to accumulate such stuff. It was great to see this show again after CN ended it a few years back and then stopped showing it ad nauseum which they and Nickelodeon do. I had forgotten how funny the girls’ recurring enemies were, other than the redundant, can’t-be-succinct, verbose, prone-to-digressing, Mojo Jojo. Who else? The Gangrene Gang, Sedusa, the Amoeba Boys, Fuzzy Lumpkins and the creepy…Him, a cross between the Devil and Dr. Frankenfurter. One-shot foes were in the first season: the Roach King, some manipulative telepathic cat (Mark Hamill), the Boogie Man (my personal favorite) and their male counterparts, the Rowdy Rough Boys. The show’s humor and pop-culture references range from the obvious: the Star Wars Death Star sequences; to the obscure: mostly from Japanese monster movies/shows. It was also the most action-packed, ultra-violent superhero cartoon on the air in its day. This was something I didn’t realize until I read an Onion interview of McCracken. In it he commented on how the current Batman cartoon was mainly just talking. When I watched and compared the two shows, he was right. Batman usually jawed his foes into submission like the old, lame Superfriends while three little girls beat the snot out of their foes. So maybe it’s best not to share this program with children who demonstrate imitative tendencies.

When it comes to extras, a real make-or-break factor, this one was given more thought. The original student films McCracken made are here, Whoopass Stew or what most people refer to as the Whoopass Girls. These originally made the rounds through the annual Mike & Spike festivals (I’ve never been to one) and then the Internet. I didn’t pay attention to the credits until now though; a classmate named Lou Romano helped (he’s the voice of Linguini from Ratatouille and other Pixar movies). The best extra is the special contest episode of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast with McCracken being interviewed by the fictional host along with four other directors pitching their shows. Afterwards, you can watch how the writers recorded his original responses before fleshing out SG’s lines around them, it was hilarious, especially his last reply.

This is a highly recommended set. It’s not quite on par with The Simpsons which is the standard of a good DVD seasonal package. It’s pretty close. Besides, there’s a whole new bunch of kids such as my nieces and nephews who are under 10. Now I’m wondering when there will be a second season set which better include the Legion of Doom rescue mission gag; and the new, made-for-TV movie as Tara Strong (the voice of Bubbles) stated earlier this year.

Austin Icebats lost last night, Odessa advances

Austin’s playoff run ended last night in Odessa but at least they made it close with a 1-0 loss. The Odessa Jackalopes move on probably to face the formidable Laredo Bucks, the team I think that has the best shot at winning the President’s Cup.

I didn’t attend as many games as I wished yet the several I did were pretty decent, the two nail biters especially. Now the players will probably have a final practice, clean out their lockers, meet with the coach and owner about next season and then they probably head home, usually Canada. Hopefully there will be a next year despite the Cedar Park nonsense. I would prefer a winning team but affordable, entertaining live hockey is a bargain if the visitors are talented.

The movie hasn’t been started due to life getting in the way (it’s a weekend project), I hope you enjoy the team photo for the interim.

Austin Icebats win 3-2 in OT! Series tied at 1-1

Their playoff hopes have been kept alive! Now it’s win or go home in Odessa tonight.

I had the good fortune to make the game since there were plenty of tickets available. Attendance is usually poor on a “school” night with most sports. Okay, most people in the area probably didn’t even know the team exists anymore. Still, it was an exciting game with a greater amount of intensity than the regular season. Excellent play could result in a team member or two getting the call to help Houston (currently third in the AHL’s West Division) win the Calder Cup.

Austin scored first with a spectacular goal that I caught on camera (hopefully I will have it posted by the weekend). Then their usual problem with defending the lead cropped up before the end of the opening period with an Odessa power-play goal. In the second period the Jackalopes took the lead but the Bats tied it back up. The final period went back and forth with the pushing, shoving, hitting, boarding and unsportsmanlike behavior yet neither side could take the lead. I did get my 21-bucks worth of hockey action since playoff games have full 20-minute, five-on-five, overtime periods. Thankfully, the Icebats didn’t keep everyone on the edge of their seats too long as forward RG Flath nailed the GWG within three minutes. I did capture this too but it happened on the other side of the rink and it may be a tad fuzzy looking.

Thanks for your patience. I plan on having more than the two goals in my next iMovie creation. Possibly a couple great saves and hits.

Paizo will keep most of my D&D books from going obsolete

Last week, my friend and fellow DM Flynn brought Paizo’s Pathfinder announcement to my attention. Since these guys did a great job with Dungeon and they write excellent adventures in their Gamemaster series, I had to investigate further.

Seems they’ve chosen to stay with the core 3.5E D&D rules and go their own way through Pathfinder, similar in concept to Monte Cook’s Iron Heroes and Arcana lines. I guess they sensed how unimpressed many people are with WOTC’s upcoming 4E D&D. Unfortunately, I’m in the negative camp because WOTC’s recent modules and supplements have been previews of their philosophical shift. These have soured my opinion of D&D’s future with Hasbro. The parent corporation most likely ordered this new edition.

From all the news I’ve caught through EN World and WOTC’s official site, I feel that the current design team is turning D&D into tabletop World of Warcraft. If I wanted to play WoW, I’d spend the money on a monthly subscription and trade D&D’s frustrations for the different ones experienced with online RPGs; it’s the primary source for socially retarded gamers lately.

Back to Paizo and keeping Picayune upbeat! There’s a silver lining to this story.

I read the letter from Lisa Stevens (CEO of Paizo) and downloaded the free 60-page alpha version of what designer Jason Buhlman would change in the PHB. He really exceeded my expectations through his fixes and changes to address some of my gripes in the current rules regarding the classes, feats, skills and actions. I only disagreed completely on two (both dealing with the Undead) but these are easily ignored without wrecking the game. If he can actually make the grappling rules for combat simple, satisfying and practical, something WOTC couldn’t solve in eight years, then Pathfinder may be the more worthy successor to D&D. His solutions even cured most of my burn out on gaming; I’ve been inches away from quitting lately due it feeling like an unsatisfying part-time job. Plus WOTC drowned the game in too many supplements, another reason why their decision to do 4E was irritating.

I am now pretty excited to see what the next alpha release holds. The one thing I wish Paizo would do is get a more effective way to collect feedback and answer questions. A message board is a noisy, crappy way to do it. They’re filled with pissing matches involving chest-thumping dorks who don’t know the definition of succinct. How glad I am my time at GDW ended before I had deal with such nonsense, the few letters I had to read were enough.

One can never know too much in my opinion

It must’ve been a slow news day when the Chicago Tribune ran this story about iPhone users knowing too much. Actually it originated from the LA paper the Tribune Corp. owns, is selling or whatever, I only know that the new owner is allowing Wrigley Field’s name to be sold to the highest bidder because he must enjoy irritating the easily agitated Cubs’ fans.

Overall, I think the iPhone owners who are getting any grief are dealing with the jealousy issues.

Inaugural post and photo for my new category

My college chums probably recognize my imitation that got cropped.

My college chums probably recognize my imitation that got cropped. Unfortunately, I'm too fat to do it very well anymore.

Seems funny t-shirt places on the Internet are just cropping up constantly. And I say, more power to them! As long as they have clever, funny and well-drawn material, they get my money. In their honor, I decided launch this new category with this hilarious post-Easter joke. Anything that makes me laugh continuously for over five minutes I have to own. Jose said [kiddingly] I would go to Hell for this gag. I told him I live in Texas, I’m already there; if you’ve lived here from May to October [aka, Summer], Hell might be a relief.

This category will not be just a gallery of my shirts. Austin is a town filled with pranksters [hence the guy with the CA Republic being moved here]. I hope to catch their humorous apparel at local concerts and any other opportunities our digital camera can catch.

KMAG’s patterns for 2004

Last week I finished sifting through all the data involving my stream (KMAG) for 2004, just in time to get rolling on last year! Now I only have 2007 and 2003 remaining to have a complete picture of QTSS’s randomization. Half of the results are the same because this was in the past; if David Bowie dominated in 2005, it’s 99% likely he did in 2004 and 2003. I do know from some initial gathering, 2007 will be the watershed year on the Thin White Duke’s title. Here are the results from the last presidential election year and I threw in a little explanation on each result.

Songs Played: 134,452
– No
Onion News stories which is why from 2005 on this number drops by 2000.

Songs in Playlist: 4386
– This is what it ended the year with. It would’ve started with what 2003 ended on.

Most Played Top 30 Songs of 2004: “Blackwolf” by Triumph the Insult Dog and “Hundred Million” by Treble Charger at 185 plays.

Average Number of Plays for a Top 30 Song: 132.7
– This is the average number of times a New Song I introduced to the stream as a Top 30 track played during the entire year. They’d receive at least 100 plays from being in the Top 30 with a priority of 3 (three is the “busiest”).

Most Played, Non-Top 30 Song of 2004: “Kix” by The Motels at 50 plays.
– This would be the one song that’s “old” and rose up to the top in a field of probably 3500 or more.

Average Number of Plays for a Non-Top 30 Song: 25.6
– This is how many times all the songs that are not in the Top 30 for 2004 played.

Most Played Artist/Band of 2004: David Bowie at 1997 plays.

Now I should probably get cracking on my favorites for 2007! We’re on the verge of April 2008 but I have a rationale for the wait.

Icebats have a postseason, finally!

The Austin Icebats are in the CHL (Central Hockey League, not the more popular CANADIAN Hockey League which encompasses the WHL, OHL and QMJHL) playoffs for the first time in five years…and by the skin of their teeth too. Unfortunately, they lost the first game of three to the Odessa Jackelopes, 4-1. They’re playing here on Wednesday night so I’ll have to go. It’ll help me get in the spirit of the upcoming AHL and NHL playoffs. AHL? San Antonio will finally appear and they may actually have a prayer, unlike their parent team Phoenix.

Anyone else want to join me? For all of the Icebats’ foibles, I still like them and probably will. The more expensive proxy-palooka Stars that Cedar Park will be importing in the next several years seem interesting yet any team I don’t have to pay for parking to see gets a thumbs up in my book!

Molly, ten pounds of raw aggression, now on video!

Normally the cats stop doing the funny things they’re doing as soon as we get the camera rolling but not this time! Besides being the psychotic cat, Molly is the most territorial. Whenever a stray animal other than a dog wanders into her line of sight, she starts going ballistic. I’m not sure if Molly is only this bold because of the windows but she has been known to charge into glass doors against a possum and another cat named Chloe. This results in her smacking her face; Molly doesn’t seem to be concerned about her dignity. I threw in the subtitles for fun. I should put it on YouTube! Maybe she’ll be as famous as Nora (the piano player), Burnsey (gray kitten talking back) or those two who sound like they’re saying “OK.”

I made a PG-rated version to show children. Molly does have a foul mouth.

I scored a 242 this Friday!

No, that’s not my personal best at Wii Bowling, I think it’s close though. I’ll look it up to confirm later.

Sadly, it was my Cholesterol score when I went to my heart screening at Apple this week. When I saw how dark my blood was, I’m surprised it didn’t morph into a Whataburger BBQ-Cheddar Special. I totally aced Diabetes, 100! The Blood Pressure section was skewed in my opinion because Somara’s operation and aftermath has heightened my anxiety. As if it being an election year with an imploding economy weren’t enough. Oh, I had 122 Systolic over 100 Diastolic which is lousy.

I’m not worried nor do I require a Lipitor-flavored shake to go with my Whataburger and fries. Cholesterol being under 240 or even 225 is my immediate goal. It shouldn’t be hard to achieve since I’m married to a culinary-school graduate, honor roll too. I just have to get off my fat behind to go exercise vigorously 30 minutes a day. I could tell by the look on the nurse’s face that Wii-based sports don’t count, unless it’s DDR.

At least she has me pencilled in for my first physical in 22 years this Spring.

Mar 23, 2008 Update: I checked the Wii this afternoon and yup, 242 is my best game at bowling too. Getting to my best golf score of -1 (based upon three holes) would be Science Fiction though.

Welcome Cadence!

Last night, my friend and former co-worker at Kenny’s, Kate gave birth to her first child Cadence! No, not something derived from Candice like Candice Bergen of Murphy Brown fame. Cadence as in the definition courtesy of Webster’s. I think it’s a decent name, certainly beats all the misspellings going around or something that sounds like a brand of cigarettes.

Kate and Cadence made it through marvelously. They’re expected to go home as soon as possible with Dad (Matt, he has a name, this isn’t an Anakin Skywalker-baby). I look forward to meeting another little girl to spoil. Hopefully, she will be as entertained by my monkey imitation as Haley is.
