1997: The Allison debacle started today

How I met my wife Somara has never been a secret nor have I ever been evasive about our usage of Match.com (aka, the Internet as most say). But on this day, 10 years ago, began a disaster in online introductions that felt like the pitch for a Ben Stiller movie. It definitely put me off on using the Internet for making friends, buying things and especially meeting women for a almost a year.

I was home sick from work that day, but by evening I was feeling much better. So while I checked my e-mail on AOL (it was 1997), an instant message appeared from a stranger. Naturally I would ignore the stranger but the messages were persistent. I decided to confront the pesterer but it evolved into a conversation that led to a meeting with the source, a woman named Allison. She seemed okay on the phone and I decided to go out with her, see what kind of person she was and practice my interaction skills. I wasn’t out to land a girlfriend, just apply the pseudo-pact Jose and I had made with the Idiot’s book were bought a couple months ago.

Allison was a nightmare from the beginning and it was no exaggeration. I think she had already told me on the phone about her past alcoholism so I wouldn’t be surprised if this came up later. The nature of her voice also told me that she was a smoker, another variable I could handle temporarily. These two factors were no big deal because I wasn’t serious, I only wanted to follow what the book recommended; put aside old, unhelpful expectations and maintain the casual strategy. I don’t know if Dr. Judy Kuriansky took the soap opera of this woman’s life into consideration. Just on the first date I got her whole life story, whether or not I wanted to hear it, regarding the booze, the drugs, her time at the local mental institution (Shoal Creek I think), her trust fund, the horrible sexual crime done to her and her experimental period of being a lesbian. There’s worse stuff I recall but I don’t want to make my site Unsafe to read at work or mentally scar children but let’s just say it sounded like the first draft of A Million Tiny Pieces. My friends wondered just how did I keep my jaw from dropping to the floor as she spoke. I think I was going through the mantra of, “it’s just a rehearsal of listening and being polite.”

We went out two more times before I sought out advice on how to politely dump her. Two more? I was “practicing” not trying to turn her around, mislead her or do anything more than have dinner and a movie. Besides, I thought I’d go with the old tradition of baseball’s three strikes before declaring her “out.” Despite our second time being less revealing than the first, the third date with her was it and all the danger signs were blaring.

  1. Allison showed some creepy signs of attachment (even when I was a teenager I never did this soon.
  2. She smoked in my car when I asked her not to.
  3. The final straw was her expectation of me to give up my weekend to help her move. I doubt Dr. Kuriansky has an opinion on the third danger sign yet I know you don’t want to take the risk of throwing your back out unless you’re really involved with the person, ask my wife.

I managed to dodge a committment on the moving assistance but I knew I’d be in for more than I wanted to deal with if I didn’t do something quickly. Thankfully Sonia, my de facto dating coach had the winning strategy on dumping I have always used from then on; get to the point, say it’s done and don’t explain nor elaborate since it will create an opening in the conversation you don’t want to answer. Armed with this plan I lucked out and got Allison’s voice mail. Must’ve worked, I never had another message on my anwering machine from her.

What then? The old means of meeting women were used, namely Sonia introducing me to candidates she liked because she stated a goal of getting me married off in five years last Fall. Looking back, it did sound more like a threat. She meant well though. When I returned to Austin in late 1998, I did decide to give online means another try as the flashbacks of Allison had worn off and the services of Match.com had rules for screening out disastrous people, unless you had the same profile.

Cats prefer Mac OS X over Vista

I caught this on The Onion.com earlier in the week, a kitten having a heck of a good time with someone’s MacBook Pro. I can only hope the owner’s display wasn’t damaged because the warranty won’t cover it.

Asteroid Insurance Policies coming soon

We are so doomed if the UN’s plan entails anything from the movies Armageddon, Deep Impact or Meteor (from 1979).

Actually, I think we’ll prefer extinction should lawyers and the insurance industry get involved in the plan. The lawyers know the NEO doesn’t have any assets so their contribution to the treaty will be guaranteeing someone to sue. Meanwhile the even slimier insurance people will make sure they don’t pay any claims because their policies will only cover damage and death caused directly by the killer asteroid’s impact—anything in the immediate crater. The majority snuffed out or horribly injured by the heat (practically everything ignites), collapsing structures, falling glass, shockwave or the ejecta (the projectiles launched from the crater) will be SOL since meteor insurance will be very specific as they parse their language a la Hurricane Katrina, Andrew and Rita.

It’s pretty irritating how Congress is also demanding NASA to do something about this with the paltry budget they’ve been given in addition to putting people on the Moon and Mars this century. For more good feelings about the outcome of a decent-sized NEO hitting the Earth, check out this page courtesy of the University of Arizona.

The Central Illinois Period

I don’t think there will be an update to “Family Tree” Diagrams for some time to come because my 13 years in Austin have resulted in a pretty extensive number of people who have entered, left or stayed in my life. The upside is that from late 1991 to early 1994 these five people have continued to remain in contact with me. If you’re one of the five people, or related to one of them, please feel free to e-mail me the corrections.

Meanwhile, the old style of bio pages are getting an overhaul to match up with these clunky “trees.”

Good riddance to Peter “the not-so Great” Forsberg

Just as I headed out the door with my last post, I saw the news. Seems Forsberg received it after the pre-game skate too. The useless, injury-prone, indecisive and worst, Team, Captain, ever, was traded to Nashville! My fellow Detroit-fan/friend also breathed a huge sigh of relief. Let one of the three teams in NASS-CARR (say it with a hillbilly accent) territory eat his ridiculous salary for two months. I guarantee the Preds will be knocked out in the first round as he sits out half the games because his groin hurts again or his skates don’t fit. Then we can hope no GM in his right mind picks him up after July 1 because he said he will not look at any offers until he’s a free agent. He sounded bitter over Philly dealing him. Tough cheesesteaks Peter, don’t let the door hit you on the ass when you leave.

Week Nineteen of NHL 2006-07

Of all the games for the Flyers to lose, the one against the Red Wings would’ve been excusable and even expected with how poorly they’ve played this season. But it seems they couldn’t do that correctly because the 6-1 spanking they gave Detroit was anti-climatic and opens a huge can of worms, namely, why have they been incapable of doing this to half of the Atlantic Division? If this were the Flyers of the last 10 seasons, it would’ve been great and a sneak preview of a great Stanley Cup series, possibly even payback for the humiliating four-game sweep the Red Wings inflicted on them in 1997. Instead, it feels like the last-place team playing spoiler to one of the best NHL franchises over the last decade. Love them or hate them, three Stanley Cups in 10 years is still a fact one must respect. Sure the Predators are in first for the Central Division with the Wings behind but the smart money is still with the Motor City come playoff time.

Sadly, I didn’t watch the game due to Enterprise reruns on the SciFi channel being on simultaneously and my DVR doesn’t allow you to record one channel and watch another. I honestly figured it would be the Red Wings beating up the Flyers and the farewell tribute to Keith Primeau I wanted see would be skipped by Versus. I never liked Keith in the beginning because my opinions of him were clouded by EA’s NHL 2001 game (he didn’t have very good stats) and my friend Brian’s stories about Primeau’s tenure with the Red Wings. As I watched more Flyers’ games over the weeks, his hockey skills were dwarfed by JR, Recchi, Desjardins, Gagne and even Williams yet you could sense the leadership. Keith earned the right to wear the C on his jersey and he went on to be a key player in keeping the Flyers in the running to the seventh game against Tampa for the Eastern Championship. I don’t think the organizaton was prepared to lose him so soon which is why there are so many problems; Forsberg plays well when he’s healthy but I think his leadership is as non-committal as his responses to the media are about being traded.

Moving on to the trades. Kapanen has been signed up for another two years which makes me happy. He’s still a fast skater and plays a solid two-way game for someone under six feet. Besides the Forsberg trade rumors, now I read about Edmonton and SJ expressing an interest in Hatcher. Please, please, please take this lead-footed clutch-n-grabber off my team.

Phoenix is still struggling as every game is critical and they’re within 15 points of a playoff berth, probably more. Thanks to the salary cap, it’s going to be harder to achieve as they dealt Ladislav Nagy to the Stars. The quote from Gretzky wasn’t helpful and I would’ve clung to him to the end of the season. The Coyotes were going to lose him over the Summer so why not keep pushing to make the playoffs with the best team you have.

Finally, it seems the NHL is trying to widen its worldwide appeal by having at least one game between the Ducks and Kings in London. I can only hope it’s a pre-season game since the ticket holders in LA-Anaheim may be a bit miffed. I forgot to mention something else going around. There is a proposal to have the Stanley Cup winner take on the European league champion in place of the World Cup series. I would like to see the NHL champ take on Europe’s winner. A contest to between two different styles of hockey.

“Intelligence Design” in children, no FSM needed

Now here’s a very vindicating piece from NPR this morning about child development. Despite the audio version requiring the inferior Real or Windows players, it is very delightful to see research proving how much you can do by encouraging children which then helps them learn, grow and demonstrate their potential. There are no details as to how the encouragement was delivered to the children that showed the improvements. I can only take an experienced guess that it wasn’t done by the same means my parents employed…nagging (“c’mon, you’re smarter than that”), berating or threatening. Well, the last one did work when my concert-going privileges were taken away yet I don’t think I would’ve fared any better on getting tickets to either of the two Police concerts in Houston when the Summit was the venue. I do hope more comes of this study. I can already imagine the naysaying on Fox News and other enemies of Education (wrapped in the guise of reform) claiming the researchers believe in mollycoddling children with Liberal claptrap. Personally, I feel this will help out with the nieces, nephews and other kids in my life who know me by name, then again, they’re all pretty intelligent based upon my interactions with them so I’ll only be positive reinforcement; if you don’t use your brain and make your brain grow, you’ll end up like Uncle Maggi.

Anniversary of the St. Valentine’s Massacre

For the best scoop on the The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, nothing beats the History Channel’s website. A while back they included this incident in their series about the days that “shook the world” (I can’t remember the actual title). Despite Capone succeeding in crippling his Chicago rival Bugs Moran, the rest of the Outfit never trusted ol’ Scarface again because he broke the rules on how to remove a competitor. The hitmen Capone involved were also hunted down and eliminated over the years for their involvement.

Wyatt, the four-year-old of Steel

superwyatt

Last night we celebrated Aaron and Wyatt’s birthdays (my Aggie brother-in-law and his middle son respectively). I can’t remember the exact dates but Sunday evenings tend to be the days everyone manages to swing at my in-law’s place. Aaron received a couple of practical gifts and a copy of Guitar Hero 2 because he’s quite good at it even though he’s more into Country and doesn’t recognize most of the rockers. Wyatt is now four and as the movie demonstrates, he’s still totally into superheroes. I know I ridiculed the inflatable-Superman-muscles kit last Summer because some poor comic-book fan would continue to lose his lunch money over it. Heck, I think the bullies would take the fan for their own personal AC use. Wyatt really enjoys these gizmos. I envy him a little. When my brother and I were little kids, we had to settle for beach towels attached to our shirts with safety pins as capes. The adults weren’t too thrilled when we used the dishwashing gloves to nail down the Batman and Robin look.

The new Spring 2007 line (of T-shirts)

cheeseshirt athfterror

Quite a great week for new T-shirts in the Maggi household! The first one I grabbed for Somara at Hot Topic as a consolation gift for me driving all the way to Slaughter Lane (way south in Austin) to eat at the the city’s first Steak n’ Shake. Hey, I had to go to Barton Creek Mall anyway to get the Express Airport device serviced. While I was killing time, I saw the shirt and had to get it for her. Despite it being an XL, it’s a baby-doll tee so it’s actually snug on Somara thus I cropped the catalog photo from Hot Topic’s web site so you don’t think she has tattoos (she doesn’t, that’s the model’s arm). Cheese is one of the funnier characters from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends which means she’ll have to wear this shirt when the first season is out on DVD, early March.

The other one is being worn by yours truly. As much as I would like to have a T-shirt of Batman trying to dispose of the rude little Moonite, this design from Cotton Press is equally funny. I got rid of my “Drink apple juice, ‘cause OJ will kill you” shirt to make room for this timely joke.

Norweigan Seed Vault breaks ground in March

It does sound like the plot point of a Seventies post-apocalyptic film starring Yul Brynner or George Peppard. I’m glad the Norwegians are running it because I don’t trust ADM or BASF to secure the world’s food supply, they’re more likely to be the morons who will cause famines with their terminator seeds. The article says the Norwegians’ vault will protect the seeds from nukes, asteroids and global warming. I think they overlooked flesh-eating zombies, alien invasions and more insipid movies from Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Happy Eighth Birthday to TJ and 75 to John Williams

I think TJ would be cool with this little factoid since he’s going through that Star Wars fan period my brother and I did 30 years ago. He may only recognize the music, not the composer/conductor behind it. When he takes some time off from the new Nintendo GameCube his parents bought for him and Jack at Christmas. But he’s eight years old now, life is all about candy and having a good time at his age.

Meanwhile, John Williams has had an impressive, illustrious career making memorable scores to the many iconic movies in my life besides Star WarsClose Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, Superman and 1941. The list is quite long and impressive too, especially on how many other films he’s associated with. He doesn’t seem to plan on quitting any time soon neither.

Week Eighteen of NHL 2006-07

According to the Philly paper, my Flyers have finally accepted this season as a wash and now they only plan their objectives in five-game intervals, probably with the objective of being “be in better shape next season.” I think Coach Stevens is being a little too optimistic since the trade deadline is in 20 days and he probably has no idea which players he’ll be losing. Heck, even according to another recent story, Stevens may have a new GM to report to in the Summer because Holmgren is only in the job until season’s end. Trade rumors around Forsberg are growing since the Swede’s tone and attitude have shifted, if Fox Sports is to be believed during the Flyers’ victory over the Thrashers.

Phoenix won last night just when I thought they would remain “off or on vacation” for another day after the Super Bowl. A nice victory over Columbus, another franchise being rebuilt on the fly. Every game is very critical for them to get to the playoffs. Too bad Detroit is scheduled for tonight. I’m still cheering them on for a first round appearance because I think they can do it.

No news on the Penguins. I have no idea where the deal is at as the deadline for a decision seemed to pass with nothing stated. Will it be Kansas City or Pittsburgh? I never did find anything on Houston.

Well, both of my teams are playing tonight so I can get a glimpse of what they’re doing and see how the trade rumors pan out this week.

Icebats dump Coach McDonald, bring back Coach Hughes

It was a shame but even in the lower leagues of any sport, firing the coach happens. Mr. McDonald seemed like a nice guy when I met him and from what I saw on the rink, it was more of the players blowing those leads and an awful lot of bad luck when trying to come from behind, they have had great shots that just don’t go in. There just aren’t enough games left in the season for Mr. Hughes to really make a difference this season yet I think I will take in another game or two.

KMAG passes 600,000 songs

According to the log for my stream, as of 10:22 PM last night, KMAG played its 600,000th song!

That one snuck up on me because I thought I had more time when I updated the stream for its new Top 30 songs last week. According to the past tally, it was somewhere in the 598,000 neighborhood. I wouldn’t have been able to catch it or check around that time because I probably was already falling asleep while watching episodes of Catscratch or Jimmy Neutron saved on the DVR. There were still good songs sprinkled in it, over 400 more than when it hit half a million; current releases from Brian Setzer, Sloan, Killers, Nellie McKay and something from the musical Duncan Sheik co-wrote. The first couple months of the year are always slim pickings for new music since the labels hold back most of the major players until April.

And now, what was song number 600,000? Drum roll please…

“Chicks Dig Jerks” by Bill Hicks from his comedy album Relentless.

How fitting I think that the stream chose another witty, funny Texan who died too soon (1994) in honor of Molly Ivins. Then again, I think it’s more of my brain putting the connections together, it’s just not as clever as Dark Side of the Rainbow. I think Bill and Molly would agree on many topics, they just would differ on the delivery of their humor.

On to one million songs played. How much longer will that take? According to my crudest calculations, it took roughly 274 days to complete 100,000 from the last milestone I reported (May 6, 2006). Should it continue at this pace, three years, give or take a month. By then I hope to have closer to 10,000 songs in the stream to randomize. It requires a hefty sized drive [160 GB+] on a nice Intel-based MacMini or iMac and most importantly, it’s hooked up to something faster than my ADSL so my friends can enjoy it.
