Reviews for Late July

After a year, my music review section has returned. Here are three CDs I finished listening to thoroughly enough on my iPod to give some worthy judgments.

Martha Wainwright – Martha Wainwright: Anyone expecting a female version of her more famous brother Rufus may be disappointed. Martha is more like Nellie McKay with a meaner streak shy of Courtney Love, see the song “Bloody Mother F***ing A***hole.” Her material isn’t so personal like her brother nor as political and silly as her father (Loudon III) so she does stand out in her own right to me, it mainly covers subjects that felt more general or moods. Her voice with helium-induced qualities grows on you and her songs grow on you more and more with each play.
Similarities: Nellie McKay, Rufus Wainwright, Tori Amos.
Recommendation: Definitely for Rufus & Loudon fans but worth buying with strong reservations.

The Woods – Sleater-Kinney: This female trio gets their name from an exit ramp in Washington and if I were giving you directions, I would really suggest you skip this until you reach the next Foo Fighters offramp. The band has potential but they’re still making the same distorted, angry, noisy crap they’ve done since the late 90s. I hate it when someone makes a record that makes me write like my grandparents! Anyway, this one is an acquired taste like sardines or kalamata olives.
Similarities: PJ Harvey (pre-1995), Liz Phair (pre-1994).
Recommendation: So far the worst album of 2005, easily.

Pretty in Black – Raveonettes: The third outing from the Danish duo is more low-key and definitely more in the vein of Phil Specter, heck they even have Ronnie singing with them on “Ode to L.A.” It’s not a bad album, it just feels like more of a continuation of what they did in their two previous CDs and I’m not really in the mood to hear that. There are a couple gems I found to put into my stream like “Somewhere in Texas” and their cover of “My Boyfriend’s Back” yet I think they were chosen more for their familiarity than originality.
Similarities: Ramones, the Specter sound, Jesus and Mary Chain, BRMC.
Recommendation: Only for fans of the Raveonettes.

NHL Schedule 2005-06

The new schedule for the NHL was released today and sadly, there will be no Dallas Stars v. Philadelphia Flyers match up this year, only me versus Jeremy Derr through my PS2.

Not to lose all hope. I still can get the NHL Center Ice package through Dish when we re-hook that up. However, I still have my wish to see the Flyers in person after what a thrill it was to meet Jeremy Roenick in person and actually see how large Keith Primeau and John LeClair are with their skates on.

I reviewed the schedules for Dallas to see if they were playing anyone interesting this season outside their conference. Not really. Philly gave me more hope. They will be in Chicago around the middle of January so I can hound my brother for that time. I think it could be a fair trade. I pay for the tickets and freeze my behind off, he can let me stay at his place to entertain the kids even though they’ll be in school most of the day. Then there’s the more attractive and easier package; go to Orlando, crash at Hoser’s new house and drive to Tampa since they play those guys at least two times a season anyway. Be there for a little payback over them robbing us of our first Stanley Cup in 29 years and my $75 I would’ve won from the Venetian from my betting slip.

Stay tuned, Southwest Airlines does fly to Philly too so I could make a week of it there and soak up the whole experience, as they would say, “you know what I’m sayin’?”

Two years and counting!

On this day two years ago, Somara and I were married! A rather low-key ceremony in a suite at the Mirage in Las Vegas.

This year isn’t very great in that we’re apart but who the heck knows what this anniversary would be anyway? Cutlery? iPod covers? Gift certificates to Dave & Busters? Doesn’t really matter to me. Somara will be coming back to Austin in a few weeks due to the economics of our situation.

I look forward to many more anniversaries with her. I only hope we have more in Las Vegas or other exciting places besides our house.

Farewell to Johnny Vermont

The lockout is finally over, 300+ days and one cancelled season later, the tightwad owners and their commish won. My team was the first to announce the casualties of the new economic order that the salary cap imposes. However, John LeClair and Tony Amonte were on the chopping block even before the lockout due to their salaries not matching their performances. I would beg to differ on LeClair but since he has been very stoical about his situation for years (he has stated in interviews that he bears no malice to the Philadelphia management because he knows that (NHL) hockey is a business first). Even so, I really wanted him to end his career with the Flyers and on a good note. Like they should at least give him a party or parade for the great years he gave them; three consecutive 50-goal seasons (first US-born player to do this) and being one of the reasons why the Flyers are consistently in the playoffs.

I wish him well with his next team and I especially hope he can retire on a high note.

As for Tony Amonte, I think he’s just on a bad streak since his injuries weren’t as devastating as LeClair’s. I also wish him well and am saddened that he can’t finish out his career with his old Thayer Academy teammate Jeremy Roenick.

If LeClair and Amonte are the only major names the Flyers are buying out to put on waivers. Just look out! This team according to my prediction, will at least have another Eastern Conference Championship appearance. I would prefer the Stanley Cup though.

Graduation

As of last night, more like this morning, Somara arrived back in Austin. She graduates from culinary school tomorrow. Her 15 months of studying, cooking, testing and more cooking will finally culiminate into her degree.

She graduates with a 4.01 GPA and some certification I can’t remember how to spell, but trust me, it’s a tough test to pass. How tough? Two out of three people fail (or as some British teachers want to change it to, “two out of three have deferred success” )

Alas, Somara is back on the plane to Phoenix come Sunday. It’s great to have her home for a little while. We’ll still be having a discussion about our plans for the next several months. You will all be kept in the loop.

Cool Shoes

I received an early birthday present this evening! The wife had a customized pair of Chucks made to order for me through Converse’s web page. This pair has the colors of my favorite hockey team, the Broad Street Bullies, aka the Philadelphia Flyers! Somara wanted to have the side have Flyers stitched on the sides but the Converse site has the means to block trademarked names. We plan on finding some other Flyers clothing and put the infamous P logo on there with fabric glue.

Now all I need is the new CBA to be announced with training camp days set up; a cordial parting for John LeClair and Tony Amonte (I’d prefer they stayed and retired with dignity but they put Philly way over the cap); tickets to the next Flyers v. Stars match in Dallas and a trip to Vegas so I can buy another betting slip on them to win the Cup, which they stand a good chance at doing.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – by Jose

This summer there really has not been a movie apt for children, if you do not count Madagascar (I am waiting for HBO for that one) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (RATED PG) is the movie we have all been waiting for. This movie is faithful to the book from what I remember. I am a fan of the 1971 classic, thought Gene Wilder was great and the Umpa Lumpas were pretty cool. Johnny Depp does a fine job filling Gene’s shoes in this Tim Burton reimagination (BETTER THAN Planet of the Apes). I was not a fan of the new Umpa Lumpa songs but overall, this movie was pretty good. I recommend it.

See you at the movies…

Fantastic Four not that Fantastic – by Jose

While I am not a fan of the comic book, I am somewhat familiar with the basic storyline. This movie appeared to be good from all the trailers, but in my opinion failed to deliver. It was all exposition of the characters and not enough fight scenes. I know they are leaving it open for a sequel. If you have nothing better to do on a weekend, go catch a matinee, don’t pay full price for this movie. Wait until video.

See you at the movies…

Countdown to 5000

Way back in 2002 is when I started up KMAG from its modest beginnings of 2000 songs in a random rotation (it has some rules, but I’m not going into that) and my objective was to have playlist grow by fifty percent a year.

When I failed to achieve 4500 songs last Summer, I decided to also make its growth more modest at 1000 songs a year instead.

Well, I failed yet again with KMAG’s birthday on June 24, 2005. However, that’s my work server’s start date, the one that everyone has a chance to listen to (Jose is the only regular listener I know of) has a start date of August 7, 2002 so I may pull it off.

Only 190 or songs to add!

The next landmark KMAG needs to achieve is 400,000 songs played which it should pull off in the Fall.

E-mail me requests to add to the playlist if you think they’re worthy of KMAG.

New Aquabats video!!

Once again I am behind the curve on one of my favorite bands and shows this Summer.

But to let you all know about it, the new Aquabats video for “Fashion Zombies” is available to watch online. It demonstrates their great sense of humor about fashion trends, mainly the Goth kids, with an obvious nod to a certain horror director.

Enter the site, then hit the link to the news and it’s there in their current update as their winding down the first leg of their tour.

American Apparel

Yesterday when I arrived home from work, there was a package at the door. My annual order of $100-worth of T-shirts from American Apparel! When I stumbled upon these guys back in 2003 through Mother Jones or one of those Lefty magazines (wait, it was The American Prospect).

They’re really well made and cost about the same amount as Old Navy and most likely less than The Gap.

Well, I was wrong, they’re about the same or a tad more than the Gap but who cares. The important thing about AA is that the shirts are made in the USA. Not assembled in the US from bolts of fabric cut in Mexico or assembled in the Dominican Republic from US material. There’s a factory in Los Angeles, the people make wages that were even better than North Carolina during its prime. That’s the part that’s critical, the money stays here and helps fellow Americans.

Now I’m not going to divert off on to some political tangent, I promised that with this blog. I’m just being a whore endorsing AA because they make a good product (after two years, I still have the majority of the shirts in usuable shape). I think they’re still offering free shipping if you buy over $100 worth of stuff. They also have a big selection of colors. I went a little crazy this time since my core ones are still doing okay, you’ll probably see them over the next few weeks.

Check ’em out. If you don’t like ’em. I’ll even pay you back for half of any reasonably priced T-shirt.

Real Chili surrogate figured out!

Back in Milwaukee, near the Marquette campus, there’s a little restaurant called Real Chili. It was pretty popular as an after hours place to eat since drinking too much can also give you the munchies. However, my friends and I can attest to it being appetizing while sober too.

The main dish is similar to something called Chili Mac and Chili Five Way at Steak n’ Shake, another home of Midwestern delicacies (oddly common in Florida too). It’s basically pasta with meat and/or pinto beans stacked on top. You mix in cheese, onions and/or sour cream and then lots of oyster crackers to suck up the grease. The cracker fights were also pretty entertaining but they really clamped down on that my senior year.

I stumbled upon a recipe that’s pretty close to the taste last week. It’s so simple, it’s genius. Boil up the pasta, I personally prefer angel hair due to the short cooking time, and then mix in Wolf brand canned chili. With or without beans is your choice, I’ve experiemented with both. You have to put the Wolf chili on top to get the effect. Wolf doesn’t quite have the consistency or the look Real Chili has yet it has the taste I remember. Then you can pour in those other touches I mentioned. I just need to take the time to dice up an onion.

For all you fellow Marquette alumni who want to know more, e-mail me.

iTunes 4.9

Unless you’ve been under a rock, Podcasting is a trend that’s been going over the Internet for about a year now. My brother Brian did a couple for his (now defunct) comedy web site plus ex-MTV VJ Adam Curry embraced this new idea.

Long story short though, because I’m not going to re-interate the whole history of Podcasting nor explain it, Apple’s new iTunes 4.9 which was released several weeks ago now has the ability to subscribe to numerous podcasts. Sure Apple is behind the trend as it was with CD-R drives being built-in, music software for playing and ripping MP3s and a dedicated PPP client. When Apple makes subscribing to your favorites shows really easy, especially when iPodder X and other predecessor applications totally sucked, you can forgive the company for not “getting it.”

I’m personally enjoying the new feature and talking it up to everyone I know, especially all those people I cajoled, bullied or tricked into buying iPods. Thankfully, not all the podcasts I’ve found are just audible versions of people’s blogs with the ranting. Most of what I have listed are NPR shows I can’t receive in Austin, Al Franken bits that are funny and science-based programs. The only DIY show I have enjoyed in general is Coverville which is a 30-minute show hosted by Brian Ibbot. He shares my interest in collecting and playing covers. His show isn’t as polished as the NPR productions or some other DIY’ers but he has me sold on his material.

Other than that, on to 500 million songs sold!

Goodbye Panthers, Hello Coyotes

I got caught flat-footed on this news but I hadn’t been checking out the official AHL web site nor the Rampage’s or Coyotes’ lately. Hey, the season ended with the Philly Phantoms sweeping the Chicago Wolves which is why my layout is tacky according to my wife, it’s a tribute to the Phantoms.

Then I saw this which was a huge relief. I had seen that the Utah Grizzlies were dropping down to the ECHL and ending their affiliation with the Coyotes. My friend Jose had also said the Panthers wanted to bring hockey back to Orlando which meant the Rampage would eventually be leaving. Not so now and I’m also stoked because I do follow the Phoenix Coyotes and I can gain greater familiarity of these players.

Definitely need to get tickets for next season, once I know where the hell we’ll be living.

Saved

A great black comedy mocking “Christians” and how they miss the point of Christianity through their self-righteous piety which is really just finding fault with others. It’s not a movie that appeals to everyone, especially in the god-barn riddled South.

But this one stars Mandy Moore as Hilary Faye. We all know her. She’s pretty, she’s from a rich family, she’s on top of the pecking order in high school and she is ugly on the inside despite all her Jesus talk. However, the movie’s focus is really on Mary (Jena Malone) and how her perfect world of “Christian” certainty completely implodes during her senior year at a private Fundamentalist SBC-like school. Based upon the earlier description of her best friend Hilary Faye, you can predict that Mary isn’t in for comfort, reassurance and understanding.

The story easily skewers Red-state Christians for their mile-wide-inch-deep practice of “Christianity,” but it’s the details which made the movie likable for me.

  • The mother, Lillian, uses her “faith” as a networking tool for her interior decorating business. Only at the end of the movie does she demonstrate more compassion and rational thinking than the school’s staff.
  • Pastor Skip’s lame usage of slang (gangsta’, cell phone terms, etc.) which just makes him come off as patronizing and more clueless in the eyes of teenagers (and the audience). He just doesn’t understand that he’ll never be cool.
  • How the Christian movement has co-opted popular activities, music styles and fashion to aid their proselytizing. We’ve all seen those T-shirt kiosks at the mall and stumbled upon the Christian pop stations on the radio. To paraphrase Hank Hill, they’re not making Christianity cooler, they’re just making rock worse.
  • The school pushes Creationism as Science, claims that prayer has been proven to cure illness (it hasn’t) and grudgingly teaches sex education because the state threatened the school’s accreditation. Too bad for Mary the instructor gave inaccurate data.

And again, most of us have had to deal with those holier-than-thou Hilary Faye types. She is more of a stereotype but the movie gets its point across. That type of personality exists even in the Catholic schools I attended. You know ’em, they pray their brains out on Sunday (and in some circles, Wednesday nights) and during the rest of the week they just screw the world over. Much like George W. Bush.

There’s even a good performance from Culkin. I figured his career was pretty over and he’d be lucky to take the Leif Garrett route.

The other “teenage” actors do pretty well portraying believable characters because the writer-director got the clique element right unlike most of Hollywood’s high-school films using kids from very different backgrounds as best friends; money, looks, power and ethnicity will always trump diversity.

The movie pulls some of its punches because it is only PG-13 but I recommend renting it. I was never friends with any Hilary Faye type yet I have had to work with them over the years and I enjoyed seeing them get pimp-slapped by proxy in Saved.
