Second night of Pinballz Go Kart League

Despite missing the practice heat and driving a busted kart (#8) in the qualifier, no, really, it wasn’t my driving for a change; I had a better run last night. Given how much better…well, all the league members are at this, I did manage to come in seventh place (out of eight, someone didn’t show). Again, I am proud to say when the race really mattered, I didn’t get lapped.

After how shitty my qualifying run went, I had a spinout and my glasses were knocked off, I decided to change my strategy. Instead of driving aggressively, I went with a more focused approach of keeping everything steady. Despite falling behind the initial pack during the race’s first couple laps, I hung in there and when a small cluster resulted in one opponent getting spun out, I passed him and stayed ahead until the checkered flat. My average (or best?) lap time wasn’t as good as last week (over 20 seconds) but I pulled through and earned two points instead of the one pity point.

Next week’s plan, definitely remember to participate on the practice run, maybe get something to keep my glasses from coming off and I gotta’ get a mask which won’t fog up my glasses

Kid who “gets it” not included

You gotta’ do those team costumes while the kids are tiny and don’t care about anything beyond the candy.

These two bums battling the cold weather today

Today isn’t as nasty as the day before but I would still rather sleep in. I caught these two rubbing in it on how they can. A rare moment when the two of them agree to be in the same spot at the same time. However, it’s cuter than it is annoying. I always love seeing cats work together on a mutual goal even though 90% of the time it involves sleeping.

In case you don’t know the difference

I couldn’t let October completely pass without a little nod to Italian heritage. This visual joke comes courtesy of my cousin Dana. Pretty funny and accurate since there’s an old joke about us…ahem! How do you make an Italian shut up? Sit on their hands! Meanwhile, I’m re-watching the legendary movie on HBO Max because it was one of the few good things to be made when everybody was trying to recreate Star Wars‘ success. Maybe Disney will find a way to make better sequels than Resurrection, Alien “Cubed,” Prometheus and Covenant. Then again, the last three Skywalker-saga movies aren’t as re-watchable so maybe they should sell the Xenomorph franchise to somebody who can make us forget those four duds.

Oh yeah, I just realized another similarity, the Xenomorph’s acidic blood feels like the heartburn I’m not getting in my old age from Italian cooking!

Testuggine & Pegasus were adopted

Last night I experienced my first foster adoption and some tears. The little tortie (Testuggine) and gray/white combo (Pegasus) kittens met their forever family. These very nice people took the sisters together so they’d have playmates, cut down on separation anxiety and to replace a cat they lost within the last year. I was sad to see them go but this is what fostering is all about…socializing them so they’ll be ready for a new life as domestic house cats.

I’m confident those two are going to be very happy and their family love them to the end.

I’m also proud of myself not giving in and adopting Testuggine because I miss the first tortie cat I really met and knew, Mewsette. She and her brother Teddy were the family cats from 1984 until I left for college. Then I would visit them once or twice a year. Mewsette may not have remembered me but the little cuddle bug would always be sweet.

Once Piper, Prince and Pascal leave, there will be no more foster kittens for 2020.

I’m a Nielsen house now

Weeks ago I received a survey from them with two bucks in it. I thought of course, hey, two bucks! I’ll put that in the in the rainy-day fund but I did fill out the survey. I had to. I have a Communication degree with some hours in broadcasting, so I know how Nielsen, Birch and the others operate. In return, they mailed me five bucks for mailing back the survey. Not bad for a few minutes’ work, not to brag, I make more per hour than what they offered.

This Saturday the Nielsen people sent a congratulatory letter to inform me I’m now a Nielsen household. OK. I’m a rather odd pick. Divorced. Lives alone. White. Male. College graduate. Over 50. I’m guessing there’s an army of my demographic. Then again, I belong to unreliable group.

Some of you are saying, but Steve, you don’t have cable nor do you watch very much broadcast TV. You are absolutely correct! Nielsen has rolled with the changes, they gauge streaming and Internet usage, therefore I will be helping them learn how much America has cut the cord on overpriced, commercial-ridden cable.

One final thought, I just remembered all the mocking my generation and the Millenials do of Boomers watching reruns of procedurals (NCIS, CSI, etc.). Much like how The Simpsons  ridiculed my grandparents for worshipping Matlock 20 years earlier. I figure I’ll be fueling the stereotype of Gen X only watching reruns of The Simpsons which I’m very guilty of doing via Disney+. I have no clue nor have I met anyone who constantly watches Friends.

Everything is fixed now!

Given Biden’s seven-to-ten point lead, depending upon which poll, voting for him and his GOP Lite agenda will fix everything! I for one did my minimal civic duty by participating in early voting. Oddly, I was only in line for maybe 30 minutes which means my part of Pflugerville is still considered White by the horrible governor. I live in an unincorporated part of the town so I don’t have a say on which person, on those kajillion posters at every corner, gets the job. I know I wouldn’t vote for the Rogers guy trying to capitalize on Mr. Rogers’ name since his litany is “spend less, lower taxes.” I read his profile in what passes for local print news, a lawyer, no shock. Probably a Republican who hates all the brown kids going to the schools he has to pay for like me. Here’s the real question. Do you want these kids and teens to get an education so they have opportunities to be, oh, I don’t know, future lawyers? Or do you prefer cutting education and infrastructure so those same kids are breaking into your house?

As for who I voted for? I was going to hold my nose and see if I could help Biden turn Texas purple enough to be blue. It seems that Orange Foolius and his toadies (aka, the shitbirds this state elected) are genuinely scared, hence the visits on a state they used to take for granted. Then Biden got unapologetic over fracking/shitting on the Green New Deal, plans to have Republican thugs like John Kasich (anti-choice, anti-labor) in the cabinet and at most saying, he’ll form a committee to rebalance SCOTUS (mandatory retirement age is the first step). Anyone who calls it court-packing is a chump repeating a GOP talking point. Ergo, I voted for the Green Party’s Howard for POTUS. All you Liberal-Bidenbots who think you can vote shame me like a certain tax dodger in Europe can kiss my Leftist ass. Biden might be “better” than Orange Foolius yet Obummer and Hillbillie co-created this monster/disaster by “pivoting” into the Republican Lite positions, proving there’s no difference. The DLC has wasted its energy crapping on the real base thinking we Leftists have nowhere to go while trying romancing “reasonable” centrists/moderates…a strategy which has continued to fail decade after decade. Larry Wilmore describes them best, they’d rather eat a bowl of shit than try ice cream out of fear of socialism. I added the final part, it’s the underlying irrational fear greedy/uneducated Boomers have.

Remember, Climate Change is now here. It’s not a fear we can kick down the road. The bill is due. Australia burning. The Pacific coast burning. Hurricanes having names beyond what NOAA planned. This is just the beginning. The GOP has been the party of denial once blatant, chattel slavery was made illegal in the Constitution. We know their plan is to hit the gas and take us over the cliff a la Thelma & Louise. Biden and the NeoLiberal establishment are just going to pump the breaks a couple times, send us over the cliff and immediately blame “the professional Left.”

I do hope to be wrong but I fear America’s racism will pull through to give Orange Foolius another four years. Texas which is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America will give country-clubber John Cornyn another six to put his head back up McConnell’s ass. The state legislature will retain a GOP advantage to screw over the cities. If a growing state such as Texas can’t stem the tide of awfulness, I highly doubt a country filled with bitter Whiteys in rust-belt, has-been places will do the morally right thing neither.

If Biden does win. Count on me to antagonize and push him further to the left. Might as well. His milquetoast agenda guarantees the GOP’s comeback on the Senate and House in 2022 and lining up Tom Cotton for POTUS in 2024.

First night of Pinballz Go Kart League!

I’ll open with this…Mario Andretti I am not. I’d be lucky to be Janet Guthrie (a barrier-breaking driver, who sadly won no titles). However, I’m glad the owners of Pinballz finally took my nagging request to start a league. What they really did was woo away a gentleman who ran it at a rival business and he’s pretty cool.

So what’s involved? For the next six weeks, we all have a practice run to shake off the mental cobwebs, etc. See how are times are. Then we have a break to let in some paying customers. Second run is for time and how well you do there determines you placement for the final race which counts toward points. There’s only nine drivers, thus first receives nine, second gets eight and you can calculate the rest. I thought I had a decent practice with a  average time of 20 seconds and change a lap. HA! These other people are out for blood and have probably booked time at the KOTA (the rival place with gas-powered karts). I didn’t care about having the ninth seed, I still got to be in the official race to get a point or two.

Although I came in last, again, I am proud to say I was NOT lapped in the race for all the marbles! Did I expect to suck this much? No. I figured I was going to be middle-low on the curve at best. Being last has a silver lining. I can only get better from there and I was averaging a little over 19 seconds a lap, something I rarely get to do. More importantly, I’m having fun. At my age, it’s too late to turn this into a career and challenge AJ Foyt or tax-dodger Lewis Hamilton. Racer M will finish!

RIP: The Amazing Randi

Before Mythbusters there was the Amazing Randi hitting the talk-show circuit in the Seventies and Eighties (definitely that decade). Although Randi didn’t prove or disprove those implausible stories involving hairspray in the toilet or JFK was killed by a ice bullet, he debunked all those phony-baloney psychics or people with “powers.” When I was growing up, there was a wave of people buying into psychics helping the cops solve crimes, usually murders. Even my mom bought into some of it which was a logical conclusion given her phase over bullshit saint sightings in Spain. Randi had a check for any capable of proving their powers. Not one succeed because they were always caught. He didn’t get to this so-called “telekinetic” in time since this loser “proved” he could move phone-book pages with his mind on That’s Incredible. Randi caught him on tape later but I think the damage was already done.

Randi wasn’t invincible neither. Depending upon your perspective, he may have been conned for many years by his ex-boyfriend in An Honest Liar. I need to see it, find out what’s the verdict in my opinion after the facts are shown.

Thanks for everything Randi. I hate psychics and their bullshit. I’m grateful to you and your work proving them to be liars, con artists and beggars of attention. I only wish more people understood facts.

MAGAt tries to predict the debate and choice

Given that this moron asked a bowling ball tells me they are a resident of Wisconsin, the land where bowling (also called keggling) is a sport, not a hobby.

Tonight is the final debate, so we’ve been told. We’ve been promised there will be a mute button to shut up either grumpy old man so the droning of one won’t be interrupted by the verbal jabs of the other. I really doubt it will work because the GOP has been working the refs since the Seventies, making the SCLM fear being accused of ‘liberal’ bias.

As for me, I voted. I’m done with it until my anxiety passes in November.

RIP Tony Lewis

Such sad news to see yesterday via Twitter because Tony performed in Austin last Summer. I didn’t go but I’m confident he did all the hits by the Outfield everybody loved and showcased he still had something left in the tank with new stuff.

I remember how much “Your Love” was played to death in 1986. It was pretty damn catchy though. The Aquabats’ drummer (Ricky Fitness) likes to do the first verse when the band is prepping for the next song. Despite how unimpressed I was by the debut album Play Deep, too much of the material sounded the same; I did enjoy their follow-up hits “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Voices of Babylon.” Maybe I’ll pick up a greatest hits.

Thanks for what you did in the Eighties Tony. You had a marvelous voice and your big hit was a ray of sunshine during my final days in North Dakota.

Assholism is an international language

Sadly, this is not from the porch of an American apartment building, it’s from the Netherlands courtesy of my friend living there. He didn’t go up to the townhouse to see if it belonged to an ex-pat or a Dutch asshole who votes for the far right. The flag is mostly offensive because it’s a symbol of racism and terrorism, the stars and bars belong to the sore losers.

You ask, how can any Dutch people, including their far right, have sympathies for an incompetent con artist who is really absolute monarchist? Some residents share Orange Foolius’ attitudes toward immigration, Climate Change denial and most were born well after the Nazi occupation, ergo, they claim the Nazis were misunderstood. You know, some murderous Nazis (e.g. Albert Speer) were misunderstood.

I’m hoping enough fellow Americans do the right thing, give the crappy Biden-Harris ticket a definitive victory to evict this slumlord. Given how low America has sunk (electing a B-movie actor/bullshitter and a “born again” sociopath with his evil uncle) on numerous levels and the Democrats running Clinton 3.0, I must tell the world, don’t hold your breath. So let’s try to enjoy the Chinese Century the best we can.

Today’s Mood (October 2020)

It seems like the weekend isn’t enough to recuperate with because we Americans waste it running around, finishing the crap we didn’t accomplish during the week! Making the two days off a paradox. Even so, I ‘wasted’ my Saturday by drinking my coffee, listening to On the Media and then taking a nap which quickly transformed into the whole day.

I rebounded somewhat on Sunday with a few chores and watching my Packers get trounced by MAGAt QB Tom Brady. As I remind myself, it’s just a game, the people of Tampa don’t get to burn Green Bay down. Paul the Bears Junkie already knows this too, come January, the Packers will be in the playoffs, again, while his Bears will sitting at home, watching the games. The pandemic will still be ongoing so no golf for them.

Living with the loss of an undefeated season was fine, the more annoying thing was Fox going right to boring-ass baseball instead of their animation lineup for prime time.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, first world problems. On to a fresh week.

Rest in Peace Kody

With much sadness for I was too late to finally cover this cute little girl kitty in my section about Jennifer’s seven cats (this would’ve been number six). However…I’m going to try as I hold back the tears.

This was Kody, probably the oldest of the pride. Yesterday morning she slowly passed away in the arms of her human family (Jennifer and daughter Cheyenne) as her heart slowly stopped beating. We all knew the end was coming for her eventually as Kody developed that hyper metabolism some older cats get before they pass. It’s just heart-wrenching because cats can live for years in this state and then they’ll suddenly go downhill before you’re ready. (This was the case for Miette and Nemo too.)

I didn’t get to know Kody for too long but I developed a little crush for her due to her being a tortoise shell, they’re often friendly. Despite always being hungry and having a skill for getting into “people food,” Kody was very affectionate as she often rushed to sit on Jennifer’s lap while we watched television and/or TikTok videos. Kody also led the meal rush with her mewing as the others followed her lead to the food dishes. As for the foster kittens, Kody was the nicest to them…being the only adult who never hissed at their curiosity. I’m going to say she was a willing tutor and not suffering from dementia.

Goodbye Kody. May your journey across the rainbow bridge lead you to a place with plentiful tuna, warm spots to sleep in and you get to play with my kitties who’ve left me as well; I bet even grouchy Molly likes to wrestle in a friendly manner. You were a wonderful cat who deserves peace and we will never forget you.

Richland Coyotes win a nail biter…for once

No, the scoreboard you’re seeing is correct. This was a football game, not a basketball game. This was the outcome of West Texas’ six-on-six style of the state religion. Where Jennifer grew up, the population centers are so small, few high schools can come up with the roster needed for the traditional minimal 22-person game, but dammit, they’re going find a way to play!

I was pretty curious to see this and Jennifer had been dying to watch a game because her alma mater has been dominant for a couple decades (they were lame when she was in high school). Thankfully a school from Cherokee, TX (about two-three hours west of Austin) gave Richland a scare; everyone else in the area gets stomped so hard, the game ends in what’s called a mercy rule. More below.

So what is different about six-on-six? A lot:

  • Eighty-yard field, not sure how wide it is, but it looks smaller than the traditional 100-yard length. They play on grass too, as the NFL and NCAA need to push for.
  • Each team plays with six people on the field and many play offense and defense. Both schools did have around 20 players total.
  • Offense must achieve 15 yards instead of ten per set of four downs. I expected much more passing but both schools run the ball pretty often.
  • A touchdown is still worth six points but the extra “point” kick is with two yet if it is run or passed on a conversion, it is only worth one. More kicks are blocked than usual too.
  • If one team losing by 45 or more points by the end of the third quarter, the game ends via the mercy rule. Richland often gets to call it an early Friday night.
  • Given more open space, kickoffs gamble more on getting the opposition to fumble it through the offside kick (this happened in Richland’s favor). There are more lateral passes in the backfield so it’s common to have a non-QB throw the pass. It short, it looks like a pickup game with tackling.

That night was exciting. The Cherokee team had the lead for a good chunk of the game and they were giving Richland a hard time. However, Richland lucked out blocking one kick and forcing another one to be a conversion. Cherokee could’ve won if it weren’t for a star player losing his cool and getting a personal foul.

Tried to maintain my social distance and wear a mask while steaming up my glasses. The bigger effort was keeping my mouth shut when I spotted a couple MAGAts near me in the stands. Besides, I was a guest and I didn’t want to upset Jennifer over something she’d been begging me to see for a while. I hope to again, just when it’s safer.
