Sponsored by the dirty cops lobby-union

The billboard demonstrates how dishonest and dirty the police unions are along with their Fascist/GOP allies. Firstly, Austin cut APD’s budget slightly; many felt it wasn’t even a drop in the bucket. Secondly, Austin was the only city that successfully did this without the cops having the means to push things back their way. My adopted home needs affordable housing and social services like every other metro area and police forces are just sucking us all dry for military-level crap they don’t need. Lastly, compared to other cities of Austin’s size, our crime level is pretty tame. I lived in Milwaukee back in the late Eighties until 1991, it was around the same size and there was a murder every 36 hours ± Jeffrey Dahmer. In Milwaukee’s defense, 90 percent of them were in a section plagued by poverty, poor infrastructure and underfunded schools. Guess who lived there? Certainly not MAGAts (pronounced maggots) but those voters screamed and bitched about how their tax money was wasted on those urban people who just arrived from Chicago; code for Black people.

Meanwhile, our shitbag governor is demanding the state legislature to pass a tailored law putting APD under Public Safety’s jurisdiction (what Texas calls the State Troopers), hence more directly under his control. It’s pretty sad too. Lincoln and his forces won the Civil War only to lose the long-term fight to Neo-Confederate traitors who think corporate feudalism is the future with a racist police force to protect their shit. Then again, these infuriating, outright lies on billboards in Texas are nothing new. For eight years, there were a couple up in North Reaganstan (it’s the stretch of Texas between Austin and Dallas) with pictures of Obama saying…Where’s the birth certificate? and $16 Trillion isn’t so sweet. Demonstrations of the Deep South’s entrenched racism stubbornly holding on.

Let us hope 2020 is the year America turns the corner at last.

Howdy October 2020

I remember certain people saying we’d return to some sense of normality by now.  Did I believe it? Well…I was probably guilty of some return with limitations but I don’t think America is anywhere close as we’ve lost over 200,000 people. Europe is starting to have what the media is calling second waves. First, second, whatever, it all sucks ass. The upcoming election certainly isn’t going to solve it. I do cling to the hope that 2021 will be better, some decent vaccine trials will show results and South Park either ends since the “Pandemic Special” was as insensitive as it was unfunny.

Recently, I like to celebrate this month by writing about famous people of Italian heritage and despite how many posts I’ve been writing, I’m just not feeling it this year. I do have a few lined up yet the Pandemic distracts me while it simultaneously puts me in a fury to write. Same goes for National Pizza Month. I’ll probably be eating at least a couple pies and I want to redo an interview I did with a fellow “expert,” but again, the damned Pandemic has put a damper on it.

I’ll close with the newish header art. Jennifer, my girlfriend, is a huge fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas. I caught the movie on its opening night in 1993 and had a good chunk of the Danny Elfman soundtrack in my head. Jennifer wasn’t so lucky. Having grown up in West Texas, movie theaters (even in the Nineties) weren’t easily accessible. She saw it some time later and fell in love with the film, plus Halloween is her favorite adult holiday. Does this mean I will have a good costume? Maybe. It depends upon some joker dragging his ass and for once it isn’t me.

No, I didn’t watch the first debate

OK, while I was driving to see Jennifer, I caught the tail end on KUT/NPR…I was hoping it was over and I could hear the fact-checking. I had other matters to tackle when my shift ended (nothing worth bragging about). Leave it to Evil MoPac to have a good gag I should use for the next round of name calling, shouting over each other and wasting time on a trivial non-issue. Personally, I don’t think the debates matter any longer. Given the horrible choices for 2020, you’d have to be a complete moron to be undecided, a piece of shit to support Orange Foolius (you’re a MAGAt, pronounced maggot) and naive to think Foot-in-Mouth Biden is going to turn a nation of burning dumpsters around anytime soon.

Lightning win the Stanley Cup

Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Lightning for their second Cup victory despite them not being able to play it in their home stadium. Let’s see if they get the opportunity to defend this title on home ice next season, I bet they and my cousin Dana would like that (emphasis on mudita, there’s no bitterness in this sentence). I would like it very much too given how much the pandemic has put a damper on everything enjoyable. Meanwhile, they better to have a decent parade to celebrate with the people.

As for Dallas, hey, nothing to be ashamed of. I don’t think anyone thought they were even in the running when the lockdown hit. I was more thrilled to see former players from my Stars make the team and participate in what is the ultimate prize in professional hockey. I also want to see if they can repeat this success. Many skeptics, namely my ex-roommate Paul believe this squad was a fluke.

Traditionally, the new season should be starting up but there’s too much uncertainty and I dread we’ll just have a repeat of the NHL’s previous solution…games in a bubble contained in Canada.

Music Monday brought to you by…

This is a hard to find CD because anyone under 40 only streams and treats music as a disposable commodity. I’m definitely out of touch with what younger people like anyway, the only song I recognized was a cover of “Girlfriend in a Coma.”

Real-life Belchers to kick off the return of Bob’s Burgers

A pretty cute and cool portrait of America’s favorite, struggling burger-making family who return for I think their 11th season on Fox; I’m amazed it made it past four given that network’s preferences for crap because Family Guy debuts with its 350th episode and they’re polluting the airwaves with a second season of not funny Bless the Harts.

I think this family used wigs to get the look down since it’s rare when members of a White family all have the same hair color, especially if it’s black. I do enjoy them wearing realistic clothes. The other day I was at a chain Halloween store, you know, the kind which pop up for a couple months in abandoned strip malls. They sell Bob’s Burgers kits. Really? It’s too hard to find a T-shirt, apron, jeans, etc? I was glad the place wasn’t offering “sexy” Louise or Tina setups like this Olive Oil getup I spotted years ago.

Welcome back Belchers!

…said no one ever, September 2020 edition

It’s a major reason why I had my FaceBook account deleted, it’s mostly the choice forum of MAGAts (pronounced maggots) and other right-wing dipshits. I also just find it the preferred forum for people too lazy to communicate beyond “LOL” or “Meh.” As for Twitter, well, it’s a better place to read great new jokes from stand-up comedians despite some things you can find equally infuriating.

Crappy 2020 summed up, September 2020 addendum 2

The only person on Earth who could possibly be excited about this is Frank Booth and thankfully he’s a fictional character.

Happy second birthday Agamemnon!

The younger, silly and dumb cat celebrates his second birthday which would make him about 24 in human years. He’s been in the dog house lately though. Aggie has a bad habit, he likes to claw the spines of hardback books and he ruined a key Pathfinder one I enjoy. He’s very lucky I was able to find a replacement via Amazon (boo!) at a reasonable price.

What will we do to celebrate? He’s not really keen on wet food but I think I will keep the tradition we had with his predecessors, a can of tuna. Only the weirdest cat can resist such a delicious treat.

Shared Pandemic Project 2020

From left to right: Piper, Penny (pending), Testuggine (Ginny for short), Prince & Pascal

Jennifer has past experience with fostering kittens and she decided to get this batch as a project to take our minds off the boredom, and maybe show me how it’s done. The photo above is a mixed family: the orange tabbies were adopted by the mama cat (Roxy) because the original mother either abandoned them or people grabbed them foolishly instead of letting her come back. Currently, the goal is make sure these five little stinkers gain weight on a daily basis and stay warm; kittens can’t regulate their body temperature until they’re at least a month old.

Matters with Prince and Piper were touch and go. Neither really wanted to eat much. Prince barely made an effort to feed too. He has turned around finally with the combination of a tube shoved into his tummy and antibiotics. Piper needed further effort. Today, I saw all five successfully nursing. In the next couple weeks, they’ll be more dependent upon slurry (canned cat food with more water). Roxy’s biological offspring: Penny (this has to change, there’s another kitty in the shelter with the name, I’m open to suggestions), Pascal and Testuggine (Italian for ‘tortoise’) are on schedule as they speed toward 500 grams by the week’s end.

When they all reach at least eight weeks of age, they will be ready for their Forever Homes, Roxy can be spayed to prevent further mishaps and get the equivalent of her children.

Took a couple days off

Last weekend wasn’t so great for me health wise on top of America becoming the Right-Wing, Fascist Kingdom the GOP has had a boner for since Goldwater. Lot of dizzy spells, probably a combination of dehydration and the blood pressure medication. I would throw in the shift in the weather; Austin has gotten surprisingly cooler earlier this Fall, normally we don’t have this until mid October, September is the final stretch of furnace days.

I just took it easy, namely re-hydrating and the key element, sitting up for about 30 seconds before walking anywhere so I don’t collapse and break more teeth.

Typesetting/Layout matter, lesson 1

Plus, this is a quick lesson on spotting fakes. You can tell that someone sloppily modified this with computer software (PhotoShop being the most common) as you can see the discoloration under the letters. Plus I’ve worked with marquees during my part-time projectionist days, individual characters are on plastic rectangles so you should see their shadows and the spacing between each letter can’t be as tight.

The overall message seems to be the theme of the weekend given Amerika being governed by one party that’s hellbent on returning us to the pre-Civil War period of governance. It’s going to be one long, ugly, ugly election.

Nubby

The fifth installment (of seven) of Jennifer’s cats. Meanwhile, the kitten fostering is coming along. For some damned reason, the two orange ones (Prince & Piper) are reluctant to eat.

This is Nubby! He’s mostly an orange tabby with a charming disposition. But beware though, his tail was cut off or didn’t develop and what remains is turned in a bit, this makes him somewhat unpredictable. You’ll be petting him gently and suddenly he’ll start play attacking your hand. Jennifer says he seems to have some partial nerve disorders along his spine due to the weird tail.

He spends most days hanging out in Jennifer’s room, staring out the window with Vegas yet Nubby isn’t as scared of Totoro when it’s feeding time. He will usually stay up on the kitchen counter to make his pitch for food or snacks.

Let’s hear it for backing up your data, Sep. 2020 edition

I tried a different tactic in upgrading my iPhone to the new iOS 14, via the Settings since it is often faster than running it through my portable’s version of iTunes. Yes, my personal system is on a lower macOS due to a few critical apps not working in Catalina: Garage Band 6.x, QuarkXpress 9, PhotoShop CS 3; and others I paid for.

It went through pretty smoothly. Then I connected the iPhone back to my portable and a message popped up about some update being needed. I guess this going to address the other matter I immediately discovered, iTunes didn’t mount the iPhone. So I proceeded with the update and obviously it got the iPhone to appear. On I went with my day.

Or so I had planned. Now correlation isn’t necessarily correlation but I suspect the iOS modification to macOS broke my Garage Band since the app would no longer start. I restored GB from a backup and reinstalled from its original source (I have the iLife ’11 DVD!). Both failed. I tried pitching all the related files to GB too, they’re usually buried in multiple Library folders. Nope.

I had to resort to restoring everything back to “when” GB was functional, my Sunday backup through Time Machine. Sure, I lost some things over the last few days yet they were trivial compared to the main tool I use to make podcast/mixtapes. The incident has also gotten me to bite the bullet on moving over more common responsibilities to my new MacBook Air running Catalina. Demote the one on 10.12 to just being a jukebox.

My point? The importance of always backing up your stuff! You never know when there’s a turn of events that won’t go your way!

Sign Kanye West up for this

Nothing good comes from Kanye…and it’s not just his so-called “music,” he’s a complete con artist with nothing worthwhile to say. Make a giant crib for the big baby, then pow! The more he sucks, the more he has to listen to something he dislikes, probably material requiring talent and thought.
