RIP Iam Holm

Ian will be remembered by me for all the support characters he provided to numerous favorite movies of mine. The duplicitous science officer Ash in Alien, the rival restaurant owner Pascal in Big Night, Bilbo Baggins in Lord of the Rings, greedy head chef Skinner from Ratatouille and the Catholic priest Cornelius helping the hero in The Fifth Element. He definitely didn’t play a type, he was Ian but he was the character you wanted to learn more about. Personally, I don’t recall seeing him in any movie I disliked which is a pretty tough feat to pull off.

Thank you Mr. Holm. You were another awesome RSC member who came to Hollywood and gave it your all to entertain!

Adam Schlesinger receives a fitting tribute!

My good friend, co-worker and fellow Fountains of Wayne fan, Ethan sent me this link via Band Camp, a site for acts to make more money directly. It leads to an album of 31 different acts, many of them friends, contemporaries and fans; all of them loved Adam; performing songs he wrote. Some came from Fountains of Wayne, some from his more electronic band Ivy and the rest he wrote for TV shows and movies he contributed to (That Thing You Do! Josie and the Pussycats and Crazy ex-Girlfriend). To me it’s a all the admiration and love outpouring to Adam Schlesinger of how much he meant to millions and he will be remembered a Generation X great.

Light rail expansion? Finally!

Now will come the opposition from all the Libertarian/Republican assholes who think they have a right to drive an SUV/Hummer getting 10 mpg and they shouldn’t be taxed for infrastructure! Screw them, I pay for the cops who only “protect” ricin’s people’s shit.

The article is impressive in how ambitious CapMetro’s plan is. It took over 30 years to get the limited Red Line (relatively) near my house. With some luck and taxpayers cooperating, I may see one of these other colored lines before I die. The one we need the most is from the airport to downtown but I would also say lines going through neighborhoods where people lack cars is more urgent. I didn’t own a car for two years when I first arrived in Austin. Trust me, if you don’t have a car in any city in Texas, you’re a third class citizen. I’m raising a Shiner Bock to this having one other line operational by 2030 since I probably won’t be driving much longer.

RIP Rupert Hine

The announcement of Rupert’s passing was made a few days ago but I stumbled upon it today during my daily newspaper scans (usually the New York Times and The Guardian).

For me, he will forever be the Fixx’s sixth member since he really had a hand in their sound. If you recall Tina Turner’s hit, “Better Be Good To Me,” that’s the essence of his work alongside Cy Curnin’s lyrics; you could even say Tina did a Fixx cover.

I also got hooked into Underworld with their debut Underneath the Radar in 1988 without hesitation because as soon as I saw Rupert’s name on there as producer, I was hooked and ready to listen. Ditto for Duncan Sheik.

Besides the Fixx, Tina, Duncan and Underworld he collaborated with Camel, Saga, Chris De Burgh, the Waterboys, Robert Palmer, Howard Jones, Power Station, Bob Geldof, Thompson Twins, Stevie Nicks, Rush, Wilson Phillips, Dusty Springfield, Suzanne Vega and Katey Sagal!

Goodbye Rupert. You were a huge part of the soundtrack to my high school years and I can never thank you enough for your contributions to it.

SCOTUS rules in favor of expanding Title VII

I got the good news from my friend Matthew first and it’s a good thing because he’s a lawyer and could dumb it down for me.

In short, SCOTUS ruled in a 6-3 decision (all four Liberals with Justices Roberts and Gorsuch) that Title VII protections do apply to America’s LGTBQ citizens. At first, my answer is well duh! What people do in private and who they date isn’t your employer’s beeswax, including the Federal government; all people are equal risks for espionage when it comes to working for the CIA.

Why this is great news? SCOTUS has put a stake through the pro-discrimation camp’s heart for a long time or pretty close to forever since 6-3 decisions are harder to overrule or weasel through than 5-4.

Writing for the majority opinion was Gorsuch who was the surprise vote in my opinion. Chief Justice Roberts not so much, he occasionally chooses to be on the right side of History with important decisions involving our civil rights. Gorsuch was Orange Foolius’ first justice on the bench and given the right-wing wish list he fulfilled, saying you can’t fire a person for being gay must be a huge disappointment to the homophobes set on pushing America back into the 19th Century.

Let’s hope Roberts and Gorsuch are growing consciences, just not too much, they are Republicans at their core beings. My stronger desire is throwing out the Originalist mode of arguing on how to interpret the US Constitution/Bill of Rights.

Meet Jennifer

Despite 2020 being a bigger dumpster fire than 2016’s finale, hope has sprung eternal in my announcement and introduction of Jennifer as my girlfriend! We met through a dating app (OK Cupid if you must know), decided to have drinks in person to get a better idea of the profiles were accurate, they were and matters took off from there over the last several weeks. Above is a picture of us coming home from one of our favorite activities; seeing bands at their live concerts (Austin has cleared limited live show exposures with social distancing).

Jennifer is fantastic, amazeballs and incredible all rolled into one. She’s a nurse by day and a full-time music fanatic…in that this lady is taking me to school in the Country genre alone. She also originates from the region we Austinites call West Texas,  the land of six-on-six high school football. If you’re curious on how it works, ask me and I will get the specifics from my new expert. Jennifer also has been pushing me out of my comfort zone with food too. So far she showed me how to eat raw oysters correctly.

More as it happens!

Dolls/Robots are getting a little too real?

Earlier this week, a Dutch road inspector thought he spotted a dead body in the bushes (your browser may offer to have Google translate intervene). Fortunately, it was just a sex doll somebody ditched. The doll was removed and hopefully destroyed with extreme prejudice. Don’t want DNA getting around.

Eww! But also, yikes! Sex technology must be closing the gap if it tricks people into thinking they’ve spotted corpses through casual glances.

RIP Denny O’Neil

The story arc Denny is most famous for with my generation.

Another legendary person who helped mold modern comic books passed away peacefully in his sleep. Denny was a vanguard when it came to writing. Unlike many of his contemporaries at DC Comics, he was a journalist before contributing to Green Lantern & Green Arrow and Batman, the latter retains many of his contributions, namely in fleshing out the villain Ra’s al Ghul, an immortal ecoterrorist in charge of the League of Assassins. After the Joker, Ra’s al Ghul is the Dark Knight’s long-term nemesis. These days, Bruce Wayne has to deal with this mortal enemy being his son’s (Damian) grandfather!

When I got into comics more seriously (or got more dedicated to buying them), Denny had moved on to be the editor of the Batman line after a stint at Marvel; I think he worked on Daredevil. I know this because when I would skim through the letters/notes section, his name was always present.

Now I just got done seeing his bibliography via Wikipedia. Holy cow! What a career! My obit doesn’t even begin to do it justice yet this entry is really about what Denny meant to me personally. A lot! Being someone lacking the art gene from my mother (Brian got it), Denny gave me hope that if I ever wanted to pursue a career in comic books, I could be a writer like him but given how awesome New Teen Titans were, I wanted the partnership George Perez and Marv Wolfman had.

Mr. O’Neil, thank you for everything you did. You steered comics in a positive direction. Strengthening the perception of how they are filled with legitimate stories, plots and most of all, a message even adults would enjoy. Messages against racism, sexism and poverty. In some significant way, you helped create their colossal success as films. You with other greats (Jack Kirby, Dick Giordano and Carmine Infantino) belong to the ages!

A flying ship!

With the return of the Eberron Campaign (a pseudo Steampunk world) to D&D comes the awesome minis to flesh out that world! I do have the core book explaining it but regardless, I had to have this sky boat. Being a fan of Michael Moorcock and the cult fave Space 1889, I thought it would be fun to have players travel on such a contraption. How does it work? Any method imagination can make it function! In Space 1889 ships could fly via special trees which produced lift wood. I’m going with an unintelligent (or low-level) air elemental being bound to the ship by a powerful druid or genie. To be nice to the creature, I’ll say this is the elemental’s punishment for a number of years, then the ship’s captain has to set it free. I’m not sure what an air elemental would want in payment because they don’t have the same needs as us, they’re pure air.

The mini onboard is Monsieur Flaneur, the current owner of the vessel. He loves to travel around the world(s). My friend and fellow DM Mark B will probably piece together an inter-campaign story for this cool looking dude. Maybe even give his vessel its rightful name. Once again, the analog world triumphs over the online game!

Rocketman

When it comes to a Biography or Auto-Biography movie, this is more like it! Right away the tagline says, “The only way to tell his story is to live his Fantasy.” Even if it weren’t Elton John, this should’ve been the approach for Queen and all the other upcoming Arena Rock acts we’ll probably be bombarded with in the next decade. It’s a movie, so mix the imagery, story and music altogether into what MTV used to be…entertainment! If you want the truth, read the book. Hollywood will always play fast and loose with what happened because everyone’s lives have long patches of boring crap, plus some iconic things were mundane decisions. Pink Floyd’s album cover for Dark Side of the Moon was something the quartet picked out in a ten-minute meeting with the designer; they were more focused on making the music.

To get started, I will make one matter clear, as much as I enjoyed Rocketman, I will never be more than a lukewarm fan of Elton John/Bernie Taupin at best. I can’t think of a good song the duo made when the Eighties happened. Their material became Adult Contemporary schmaltz and the ultra-cheesey hit they made for The Lion King sealed it for me. I have overcome what would be hatred for them since enough years have passed with their remake of “Candle in the Wind” to canonize Princess Diana into some kind of secular saint…I refuse to bow to nor recognize any royalty, including the wannabes in America.

On to the movie!

Rocketman is told from Elton’s perspective while he’s in rehab. Exhausted, strung out on coke and booze, he checks himself in and confesses everything to his fellow patients: his emotionally unsupportive parents, his first gigs, his struggle with being gay, meeting Bernie and the early years, so on. Since he’s really shy, liquid courage fixes that; people   expect a Rock n’ Roll showman. When success happens (relatively) quickly, cocaine and additional substances get added to maintain the outrageousness, primarily through his famous wardrobe. Throw in a unfaithful boyfriend/personal manager to widen the hole money, platinum records and fame can’t fill. It’s not a new story, especially with show business. Rocketman just does it better by sprinkling in the catalog of hits to assist the storytelling. For example, he wanders around a party at Mama Cass’ singing “Tiny Dancer” to illustrate his loneliness amongst a crowd, a montage of shopping/fancy dining to “Honky Cat,” or Bernie singing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” as he walks away from Elton, citing exhaustion and his need for a break.

Again, the songs are not used in chronological order which is fine. They’re used to amplify the emotional resonance of what’s happening. The events in his life are likely jumbled up, truncated, people are composites, etc. I would have to ask my friend Mark M to clarify for he read Elton’s book Me and is an expert on the singer/songwriter. Rocketman succeeds in doing what it set it to do originally…entertain and give the masses the equivalent of his life story through a musical version of Wikipedia. Elton wisely knew that diehards or the truly inquisitive will read his book. I’m also assuming Me covers his not very productive Eighties period and the comeback in the Nineties thanks to Disney.

I highly recommend Rocketman for any reason. Mine would be how it’s up there with another personal favorite Rock n’ Roll movie Elton appeared in 45 years ago, Tommy. We need more original MTV hybrid flicks telling the journeys of our favorites. Imagine how cool Duran Duran or Roxy Music would be. Hell, maybe I could sit through U2 without puking profusely.

NASCAR bans the flag of traitors and terrorists!

It only took the organization decades to finally ditch the stars and bars representing the traitorous Army of North Virginia but I’ll take it. The decision may eat into the racing association’s fanbase yet I’m confident there was some cynicism involved, aka, they’ll sacrifice some Trumpkins in exchange for more Yankees and non-whites watching cars going in circles.

Meanwhile, more statues of Columbus are getting destroyed. Feh! It won’t change the facts regarding his landing in 1492 or suddenly undo all the horrible things other humans have done to each other since then. I look forward to tearing down the monuments to WASPs.

A new mask from a friend!

My super cool friend Summer made this Avengers-themed mask to add to my arsenal to get through the waning days of the Pandemic…and to be ready for the inevitable second wave. I will be alternating it with my cousin’s groovy one from April.

One good thing from the Depression of 2020

I know these places provide a service for people who are “beneath” the financial radar but the fact that they exist is very damning. America should find a way to empower every citizen, resident, whoever. Money is money and these companies screw vulnerable people out of a resource they badly need. So this location being boarded up won’t get any tears from me and I’m confident the neighboring Starbucks would unofficially agree.

Sorry about my absence

It’s a lot of work typing with one hand for legitimate reasons…rimshot! The recent injury in my left arm get worked up whenever I do anything to pop the joint or what I consider, double-jointed action, namely putting my left hand into my left pocket to get the car keys like a total idiot! Thankfully I bought some of those re-usable icepacks to go with a cooler I acquired recently. Man that feels so much better on the injured area.

To make sure my left elbow was healing properly I got an appointment with Austin Regional Clinic. Good thing too, it still smarts and then a weird bruise appeared on my forearm. A very nice nurse reviewed it, said I need to keep taking it easy and ordered me some good painkillers. Meanwhile, my blood pressure was high. I blame this on a lack of exercise and the low-level state of pain I’m in. This blood pressure jazz isn’t something which runs in my family unless they smoke so I’m not worried, I can beat this with more exercise and staying chill (the original Eighties definition, not what the Mills and Z’s have changed through Netflix).

I hope everyone out there reading my site is doing well. I really hope the second wave never happens as we’re haphazardly reopening the world.

DC Comics and Diamond part ways

Yesterday, DC announced that it will have all its comic books, novels, etc. distributed by two new companies this Summer. For over 25 years, Diamond Comic Distributors has been the sole solution if you buy your stuff from direct-sales stores like Rogues Gallery or Dragon’s Lair in Austin. For those of you who live elsewhere, tell me your faves!

What does this really mean and why should anybody care? Firstly, my initial guess is that DC got pissed at Diamond for shutting down during the tighter social distancing period which meant layoffs, no new books for two months and nobody getting paid. Given that DC is part of the huge debt AT&T’s shareholders are sweating over thanks to their poorly thought-out TimeWarner acquisition, any revenue stopping is bad. Secondly, I called my store (Rogues Gallery) to ask how it affected them and me. The short answer, nothing drastic other than fewer DC titles being ordered (cuts back impulse purchases) and some will have to be special requests.

I sure hope DC Comics knows what it’s doing. Their movies aren’t consistent. Their separate streaming channel was a weird decision and with it being part of HBO Max, it will probably shrivel up as a separate entity. They’ve been in Marvel’s wake since the Seventies, DC only makes up 30 percent of Diamond’s business so Marvel is obviously larger. Moving DC editorial to LA has yet to pay off in the books’ story quality. The silver lining DC can still cling to is their CW success and I have always felt their characters work better on the small screen. Trust me, Green Arrow as a movie would’ve tanked. Green Arrow as a TV show exceeded my expectations.
