{"id":16097,"date":"2015-06-15T08:30:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T13:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smaggi.us-east-1.derr.space\/?p=16097"},"modified":"2015-06-15T09:06:42","modified_gmt":"2015-06-15T14:06:42","slug":"1215-magna-carta-is-signed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maggipicayune.derr.io\/wp\/2015\/06\/15\/1215-magna-carta-is-signed\/","title":{"rendered":"1215: Magna Carta is signed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This very old document from English history is greatly exaggerated in what it actually established but I do think it put the Western Empire on the right track for\u00a0what would follow: legislatures,\u00a0<em>habeas corpus<\/em>, written constitutions, bills\/charters of rights\u00a0and numerous other elements to form republics and democracies instead keeping us mired in petulant monarchies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How it&#8217;s oversold I think is that C-students (or American pundits) believe the charter establishes the principles we live by today in the West. HA! The\u00a0<em>MC<\/em> is more along the lines of a contract between King John (or in America, the lesser villain in\u00a0<em>Robin Hood<\/em>) and the barons who felt they were getting screwed. In modern terms? It&#8217;s identical to every\u00a0professional sports strike\/lockout in America; a snit between the billionaire owners and\u00a0the millionaire players. The rest of the English (and Americans)? <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=buckwheats\" target=\"_blank\">Buckwheats<\/a><\/strong><\/span> for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to\u00a0<em>the Economist<\/em>, King John didn&#8217;t even honor what he was forced into agreeing to; maybe John was as\u00a0conniving\u00a0as Hollywood\u00a0made him out to be. His son Henry III fared better when the document got amended in the 1220s\u2026plus he had a more powerful army to bring the rebellious barons\u00a0to heel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It does remain a good start at reining in the power of a sole ruler even if just\u00a0protects the other One Percenters. Inevitably others got included, too bad it wasn&#8217;t sooner.
