Great insight on Rock Band/Guitar Hero

I must have downloaded the version of the Sound Opinions podcast from Bizarro World because it wasn’t filled with those two Chicago windbags’ bitching about Rock Band and Guitar Hero for a change. Of course Somara always asks, why do I then bother listening to those purists? Sometimes there’s a pay off such as the primary focus of this episode. I don’t care much for what they have to say, they’re like numerous critics; bitter, failed musicians who tend to promote crap and (over) revere dinosaur acts as the clock is running out for their dying newspapers. It’s their guests I anticipate and when they’re allowed to speak over Jim’s bloviating, the program pays off.

The link leads to the footnotes but you can choose to catch the stream or download the MP3/Podcast. Greg LoPiccolo from Harmonix explains how Guitar Hero evolved to become a surprise hit, why the differences with Rock Band, how the songs are converted for the game and the process of bringing the Beatles to the game. Personally, the Beatles Rock Band game blows away GH’s Aerosmith and Metallica versions. The jury is out on Van Halen and Lego for they haven’t shipped yet.

Meanwhile, I’m counting down the hours until my long awaited, wireless PS3 bass controller from Madcatz arrives and following the progress my nephews and niece make learning to play instruments despite the fallacious arguments made against these awesome videogames.

Norm MacDonald

Friday night, I kicked off the weekend festivities with a trip to Fry’s to buy an upgrade to my MacBook (haven’t installed it yet) and see this talented comedian. Most people know Norm from his stint on SNL, the movie Dirty Work and a his ABC sitcom The Norm Show. My favorite role he did was Norm the Genie from The Fairly Oddparents. He has many brief cameos in Man on the Moon as Michael Richards (yeah, the Kramer guy) and The People v. Larry Flynt showing his dramatic side.

For Austin, he brought the funny, stand-up persona and I think it was the longest show I’ve ever attended at the Cap City Comedy Club. Norm definitely has a different style live than what you get on cable, he meanders so much he makes Steven Wright appear focused. He’s hilarious, it’s just how he gets to his point or jokes which made the show different from past gigs. Maria Bamford is similar. I was impressed by the timeliness of the material, he had a dig over Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize which was clever…if you pay attention to current events: He won the peace prize on the same day he tried to blow up the moon!

We had a great time at his sold-out show. The club took too long to eject this annoying heckler behind us. It puzzles the crud out of me. The idiot paid around $30 to see Norm MacDonald, an A-list comedian and felt compelled to interrupt, as if he had a right? The doofus probably talks aloud in movie theaters so I better not see him at the Alamo Drafthouses.

Opening for Norm was a really skilled comedian named Amber something. She also writes the humor column in Life & Style. Amber had some memorable zingers. She lives in Minneapolis so I will have to ask my friend Cindy who resides in the area if she has had the chance to see this funny lady headline something.

Sadly, I didn’t get the opportunity for a photo and conversation. The show was packed, Norm didn’t seem to be in the mood (not cranky, probably busy and didn’t have anything to promote), there was some pretty tough-looking security present and I was very tired with a long drive to Spicewood ahead of me. Maybe next time. If you do get to the opportunity to see Norm live, I highly recommend it, then you’ll understand the latest inside joke I have with my friends Jeff and Jeremy.

A brief weekend off to enjoy the (latest) good news

So much to write about and so much has happened recently but since I’m ahead of schedule for the pace I have put myself on for this site, I took the weekend off to practically do nothing, similar to what Peter from Office Space did. Well…I did a bit more, read several chapters of a book which I’m using as my ammo in the healthcare debate for the opposition (you know which side I’m on and what I prefer to call the whiners, it fits them, personally I think #4 from the Urban Dictionary nails them).

I’ll start with the best part because it’s associated with Apple, my employer. It’s no secret that Apple’s new fiscal year began last week, I work for a publicly traded corporation and it’s always mentioned in the financial news whenever the quarterly numbers get announced. Unlike past jobs, Apple undertakes every employee’s review in one big swoop around this time of year. When I worked at DG and University Towers, it was on the anniversary of your hire date, in DG’s case, you were lucky if it happened within six months after it. GDW? It was a matter of being pushy or making a threat. PowerComputing didn’t last long enough to ever iron out a policy.

Reviews are stressful for me regardless of the year I’ve had. The majority of mine with Apple have been great which vindicates who I am, how I operate and what my priorities are. I remember the guff I took from Celli at DG, the despair with PSW (delisted and gone!) and GDW’s parting words (also gone); all of them stating I’d never add up to much. Ha! Apple seems to have felt differently! I have a 10-year plaque.

This year was no exception on what I received, good marks and the positive things which come with it. Last year, I did well, but I was battling My Evil Twin; it means, I had a hard time believing all the nice things I read on my review because I perceived myself as a clock puncher, nothing more. The promotion to Senior Specialist (since we’re near Mexico, I could be Senor Specialist) has done wonders for my pysche. I have a supportive team of managers who let me take command with particular projects to move the Enterprise team in a direction I see as positive. My co-workers are onboard, most of the time. Human beings can’t help having differences of opinion, what matters is how they’re expressed and resolved. I hope to get some additional training over such job aspects, namely conflict resolution.

The awesome review led to taking the weekend off at my friend Deb’s house out in Briarcliff or Spicewood, I can never remember yet it’s a few miles away from Bee Caves, another small town being absorbed by Austin. Deb’s house is amazing. It’s a nice remote, peaceful, zen spot to enjoy the gradually vanishing hill country of Central Texas. It’s far away enough to avoid the light pollution if you want to gaze at the stars too. Currently, she is visiting her daughter in Hawaii and needed someone to check on her cats…and no, I do not have a catsitting/housesitting side business, I just love cats. She has wireless yet I chose to nap, eat, listen to podcats, try to round up the cats (impossible with Sting, Kitty Girl learned I was cool) and watch cable TV. Her son Matt was around so this was a rather easy errand, I think I should pay her for letting me hang out.

Then came the piece de resistance to the weekend, the AppleCare celebration of our ninth year in a row on winning the Consumer Reports roundup for overall support. It’s a tough award to win. Most CR reviews are not strong endorsements because they always ding Apple products on price and/or the lack of expandability for iMacs, Minis and portables. A big fat “no duh!” on the latter unless CR can find a way to modify a portable without it looking like something from There, I Fixed It!

The honchos of AppleCare chose to rent the entire Austin Pizza & Park to reward us. From 4 PM until 9 PM, the whole place was ours to enjoy: eat all the pizza we could stand, play the video games, drive the go carts, etc. Despite the rain preventing everyone from taking advantage of all the outdoor exhibits, it was an awesome time for me. I got to see co-workers in a more social setting and meet their children I’ve heard about. Some I’ve encountered before, others, it was a first time. We did this last year, around Spring time but my anxiety kept me from truly appreciating it. Most days, I wanted to stay the hell away from work and anyone associated with it, there were a few exceptions. This year, those inhibitions have been treated to prevent the great time everybody was entitled to, myself included.

On to doing my part in getting Apple a tenth title from CR because I lost at putt-putt golf again, by 10 strokes, I blame the wet course! I need my rematch with Somara and she needs hers on the go-kart track.

Thank you all for helping me achieve what I thought wasn’t possible some years ago. I couldn’t have done it without your support, encouraging words and everything else you do.

Playboy‘s Hail Mary pass

The new publisher of Playboy, Scott Flanders (upcoming coincidence?), may have convinced Hef that the aging magazine can’t compete with all the free material on the Internet by having Marge Simpson on the cover.

I love cartoons, but I don’t love them that much. Still, I’ll probably buy it so see what kind of jokes, etc. the publication does contain. This season does represent the show’s 20th season, why not do something a bit risky, in the minds of people who were born before 1980. Somara will chuckle because she doesn’t feel threatened over a periodical which has spent more time reviewing hi-fis, the war on drugs and the latest claptrap from Norman Mailer than showing relatively tame nudie pictures.

Happy Ninth Birthday Chance

According to my personal datebook, Chance’s birthday is today. He’s a very lucky young man to have a father who can draw really well because kids are very precise on what they want in a superhero piece. His dad is my longtime friend Steve, a very talented guy and great all around dude.

I will have to make a phone call or something to see what’s the plan this weekend. Will it be a trip to see Toy Story in 3-D? A Wii tournament? Or maybe something exciting like a trip to a go-kart track.

Then again, I might be out of touch on what kids his age really dig. I will be taking my Georgetown-based nephews Hunter and Wyatt to D&B on Monday, maybe they can give me some insight on what Chance is into. I’m confident the Ben 10 thing has run its course.

Should you know the Bryants, drop them a line!

Stonehenge Beta?

I did catch a little bit of news on the discovery of second site but only now have I gotten around to reading more details. It’s pretty amazing what the Guardian article states so far. Hopefully I’ll remember to check back when the scientists get the results of the radio-carbon dating process.

I do want to pitch a theory about it. I think they’ve found the original Stonehenge and the original residents were suckered into tearing it down to build the larger, more expensive one we all know today. Otherwise, the professional sports team would move to Wales or Scotland which were willing to build a competing site with corporate skyboxes. This worked for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago White Sox.

Come to think of it, I will follow this story since the Stonehenge incident from This is Spinal Tap took place in Austin; not really, the movie was completely shot in LA, the subtitle stating where the band was during the tour said Austin.

Snow Patrol with Plain White T’s

xxx

This lady I barely see around Austin anymore turned me on to these guys five years ago when she gave me a spare copy of Final Straw which led me to stumbling upon their cover of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love;” they do it way better using their guitars in place of the cliche horns section. When their bigger album Eyes Open hit the scene in 2006, I was definitely hooked yet I missed the opportunity to see them at Stubb’s around 2006 or 2007 because of other priorities.

Last night I finally had the opportunity to see this (Northern) Irish-Scottish perform tracks from their current album, the rather excellent A Hundred Million Suns; it was released almost a year ago and I have yet to hear the big track “Take Back the City” on standard radio yet. I think, outside of my stream/iPod, I’ve heard it more often through my Rock Band game since it was an awesome download to score.

So as a live act, they were great! I am kicking myself for not bothering to catch them sooner to witness earlier material such as the song “Spitting Games,” “It’s Beginning to Get to me,” and “Please Take These Photos from my Hands.” Snow Patrol isn’t as depressing as those titles sound. They did do “Take Back the City,” “Hands Open,” and “How to be Dead” amongst things mainly from the current record. Other cool highlights were the lead singer Gary Lightbody making funny comments about the humidity which I figure he isn’t accustomed to in the band’s current home of Scotland. The best one was his apology if his hair deteriorated from sweating and he began to resemble, quote “Weird Al Yankovich (sic).” Meanwhile, they had a projection system casting on the canopy at Stubb’s to greet the audience during their opening number; It listed all the cities on their ongoing tour and how they all felt like home. Then they gave a personal howdy to Austin as the picture above shows.

Again, I’m glad I saw them in action. All during the Snow Leopard beta testing I did at work, I used a picture Snow Patrol as the Desktop on one of the test clients I was using to help me remember when it was booted in Snow Leopard aka 10.6 (the other two had Def Leppard and the Doves because they’re from Snowden). These guys are now on my short list of acts to repeat seeing whenever they come back through Austin.

Opening for Snow Patrol was Plain White T’s who were also finishing out a tour on a record they released last year. They did perform “Boomerang” which they will be laying down in the studio when they get started on their next album. Despite how sick I am of “Delilah,” I like everything else this Chicago quintet does namely “Hate (I Really Don’t Like You),” “Big Bad World” and “That Girl.” No luck on their best song ever, “Friends Don’t Let Friends Dial Drunk.”

Sixteen Candles 25 years later

sixteencandles

Last month I took Somara to this revered film at Alamo Ritz for the theater’s monthly celebration of Girlie Night. (Yeah, I know, this story is not very timely in light of when we went and how recent John Hughes’ death was, but I’ve been swamped.) First thing out of many people’s mouths is “Somara has never seen this?” All she can say in her defense is it came out during a busy time her life and she somehow always kept missing it on cable ever since.

The good news is that Somara did like it and I’m glad Alamo Ritz continued to prove why it’s worth spending a tad more to see a flick in their theater while Cinemark, Landmark and Regal make it a chore so you’d rather save the cash to watch it on DVD. At first I was a bit concerned if I would be allowed in. I feared Girlie Night was a literal thing because I was the only dude in queue. Then a couple more guys appeared to my relief yet we were outnumbered at least 20 to one. While we sat waiting for the main attraction, the screen showed shorts of cute things: a puppy rocking on its back trying to stand up, a kitten trapped in a tissue box; women have a region waxed (ugh!); and scenes from the TLC show about the kid beauty pageant circuit (just plain sad and a form of evil with a little e).

Then the hostess from Bird’s Barbershop started the festivities with a contest of three audience members telling their best high school humiliation stories: the first is the daughter of professional party clown Doodlebug (we’ve seen her at our credit union!), the second beat up a homophobe in front of college recruiters and the third got her underpants pulled down by a friend in front her gym class. Pretty rough, especially the first one, her mother’s profession went on for years which isn’t an isolated incident. After the contestants received their prizes, the hostess led everyone in a toast to John Hughes, thanking him for making his more honest movies about life in high school. She announced next month’s choice of Dirty Dancing to only be a coincidence as Patrick Swayze had died a few days earlier but it might be wise to pray for Shelly Long’s health because Troop Beverly Hills would be November’s Girlie Night. Finally, the MC pointed the audience to the extra touches of the evening: a special cocktail named after Long Duk Dong and there were sex quizzes with the menus with the same questions you see in the movie…right down to the misspelling of confidential, the i and a were juxtaposed at the end.

How is this movie after 25 years? It remains my favorite realistic John Hughes flick. (Weird Science is my personal favorite but that one is more of a teenage boy’s fantasy since the reality bending was crucial to the plot.) When you strip away the comical fashions of 1983 (when it was shot), the technological limitations we no longer live with (10 floppy disks being expensive, non-mobile phones and cameras using film) and the dated slang, the heart of the story remains timeless, universal and transcends gender even though a younger boy getting the time of day from an older girl is a longshot. Sixteen‘s jokes are still hilarious and now my wife understands my Duk quotes from Wantanabe like “Oh sexy girlfriend!”

Finally, Alamo outdid themselves too. They managed to get the film version which contains the original music I remembered from watching it a dozen times in the Eighties from a copy taped off HBO/Showtime. Due to the constant battle over money, copyright, etc.; the DVD version and what is shown on TV have different songs in certain scenes which is a damned shame. At least Somara got to experience it the way I remembered it in high school.

Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3-D

toystory

Disney re-released these two awesome movies in digital 3-D, probably to build up excitement for Toy Story 3 which is coming out next Summer. I didn’t care about the studio’s motivations, I was itching to see these flicks again in a theater because we can’t seem to find our special DVD edition whenever I want to have a Pixar festival every Spring. When the Alamo Drafthouse at the Village said they’d be participating in the two-week only engagement, I couldn’t resist. Somara and I invited our friends the Gordons to join us since we wanted to do something social with the four of them, besides, it was one of the rare times Alamo allows their son Corrin in outside of Baby Day. He and his big sister Ryanne were very well behaved too which is amazing for children at their respective ages of three and five, a double feature is hard for little kids to sit through.

As for the 3-D elements…it worked for me. I didn’t get a headache from wearing the glasses over my regular ones and I “saw” the depth of Andy’s room. The effect was more realistic when there were outdoor scenes involving rain and snow. The trailer plugging yet another version of A Christmas Carol demonstrated it via an unnecessary comedic element requiring Jim Carrey’s slapstick antics. I thought I was suffering from just vampire and zombie fatigue until Disney plans to flog Dickens’ corpse one more time. Anyway, Story 1 & 2 never were made as 3-D features in the beginning so adding this enhancement didn’t feel like a gimmick, it was more like ice cream with an awesome piece of pie. Then there was the technical aspects to watch, namely seeing how far Pixar has come with human articulation. In the first movie, “real” people and animals are stiff, robotic and unimpressive. The computer animation only functions well with the toys because their anatomies are more flexible to the processes. Their was definite improvement four years later through the second dog and the villain Al played by Wayne Knight. By Monsters, Inc. it was much closer and I feel Pixar nailed it by The Incredibles.

I wholeheartedly recommend revisiting these well loved movies while you can. If you live in the Austin area, treat yourself to the Alamo experience. Before the movie starts, they show the Pixar collection of shorts you can buy on DVD separately from the features.

On a side note, another reason why I love Alamo and Austin was the opportunity to help a complete stranger find her sunglasses. While Somara held the seats, I waited in the lobby to give the Gordons their tickets. A lady and her two small children were asking the manager if they could search the recycle bin for all the used 3-D glasses. He said sure so away they went on a rather difficult task because her prescription pair resembled the free, dark frames so it was going to be a needle-in-a-haystack proposition. I asked if I could help and she gladly accepted. Back in the Midwest, most people would decline on the assumption I was mentally ill or a pervert. I think she was happy to have an adult set of eyes and hands to assist; the little boy would just put the glasses on the table and get more without inspecting. He was under five, I didn’t expect him to understand his mother’s dilemma. Thankfully, she found them in a few minutes when the DKNY was spotted on the side of a particular pair! Being a good samaritan definitely got my morning off to a great start.

If only Triumph the Insult Dog would comment

These baby outfits are only funny due to Lucas making three awful movies, otherwise, they’re a bit sad to see what some fanboys and fangirls will buy to torment their children when they get to high school.

I know, pretty lame coming from a guy who has given friends’ kids onsies with AC/DC, Spinal Tap and other crude jokes on them.

Miette’s teeth are clean again…

…probably for the first time since she was born.

October is the discount month at my Vet for having our cats’ teeth scrubbed because they can’t hold the brush or floss with those paws. Curse us and our opposable thumbs!

Miette went first since she had her annual first. Then there’s a six-month window after the exam or I have to pay for a new set of blood tests; make sure being put under won’t kill her. Molly and Nemo are supposed to be next but Nemo’s food allergy investigation pushed Molly’s whole plan in limbo.

Somara dropped off Miette in the morning. Poor thing had to be tricked into the cat carrier without breakfast. It was for her own good is what I had to remind myself.

I received a couple calls as the cleaning progresses. The first was the tech asking permission to remove a cracked tooth. I allowed it after the tech explained it wouldn’t affect Miette’s ability to eat dry food; it had to go or she’d experience more oral infections. The second was an update to know my (former) feral kitty was waking up and to receive instructions on how to administers some pain medication for a week.

When I got home from work and an errand, I couldn’t wait to see Miette. Sadly, this very affectionate, appreciative cat I’ve had for eight years didn’t feel the same. The effects of the anesthetic remained in her blood as I could tell from Miette’s dilated eyes. The vet said she’d be distant acting for a day and she’s coping with the pain of a missing tooth.

Tomorrow I have the whole day off from work. I can pet her and spoil her during that time. I know I have the cat I love back when she demands to be held while I’m brushing my teeth in the morning.

Monty Python turned 40

The last place on Earth I’d ever think would discuss this was Marketplace on my NPR affiliate, otherwise I wouldn’t have known about the milestone yesterday; the downside of my current Apple gig keeps me too pre-occupied to do any serious Web surfing.

It’s worth listening to because the narrator talks about the sketches from an historical context regarding Britain’s economy in 1969 instead of the usual, predictable angle Comedy Central would take: before Python, there was the Goon Show with Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, blah blah blah. Still, I doubt the UK would ever experience a Communist overthrow through an election or coup. I would agree on the issues about food, manufacturing and customer service which I feel two out of three are continue to ring true. Seriously. Other than a pub have you ever heard of an English restaurant? I think their manufacturing got resolved the same way it’s happening in America, it’s been handed over to China.

Anyway, by the time I was old enough to understand and appreciate the comedic stylings of these guys, the UK was a different place thanks to Punk Rock, Margaret Thatcher and more American culture being exported to them. The jokes weren’t as relevant yet I doubt even the most Anglophilic wannabe understood 90 percent of them. The reruns remained a nerdy rite of passage in the Eighties as they were a staple of late-night weekend television on PBS. All the inside jokes evolving into a secret code for the nerd/geek cliques at the five high schools I attended.

Then MTV decided to bring it to the (m)asses of America in the late Eighties. It never was the same to me. I’m sure it’s the feelings minorities experience when their music and slang get co-opted into suburbs.

The good of what Python did outweighs the annoyance. Their absurdities cascaded over to American and Canadian comedy: SNL, SCTV, The Simpsons, Mr. Show, and parts of Adult Swim.

Great news on a financial milestone

This weekend, we paid off Somara’s third student loan with Sallie Mae. Thanks to all those recent windfalls I had happen (Chase, Wells Fargo and the State Comptroller), I decided they were enough to put toward the remaining balance while we could endure the rate in the short term from handling more on a credit card. I made the final payment on Thursday as soon as I saw the key amount of money get deposited via CEFCU’s site. I didn’t think Sallie Mae would act so quickly, they have a history of dragging their butts with me and then I have to make a call to Bangalore by way of Indiana, if the phone numbers are to be believed.

How far along are we? We have one more loan to kill and it’s a whooper because it’s greater than the previous three combined. There remains a silver lining:

  • The current rate on it is 3.25% until further notice. It used to be 8.25% when I had it refinanced in 2006 and that’s still better than the 16% it was.
  • With the rate being half of what I planned, Sallie Mae lowered the minimal payment by $100 recently. I have no idea if this is permanent. I’m working under the assumption of it going up should the economy improve, thus it will always receive the amount I paid when it was 8%. I figure it will be done long before March 2026.
  • The total balance of loans is now 41.1% completed since this is equal to three completed and three-plus years on the whopper. This puts us ahead of schedule on the refinancing of 2006 by five or more years, assuming we achieved five per year on average.

What’s next? Sadly, not the last loan. As the Finance Minister of the Maggi Republic, I laid out a strategy most people say is preached by Dave Ramsay. My friend Doc and I think my parents told me about it back in the Nineties. The snowball effect. Thus, all the money we were putting toward Sallie Mae #3 will be refocused on our time share in Las Vegas after we rein in a credit card over the next month. We will pursue this until it’s time buy our first new car together and it should be my second car ever. I’m not thinking any further ahead than that, it would be pressing my luck on how much success I’ve had this far.

Dallas came to Austin for one night

starsvstars1

Somara did a spectacular job taking pictures of this special pre-season game so I wasn’t going to let her efforts go to waste because the timeliness of them was on the verge of irrelevance, besides, I think it’s the first time the Dallas Stars have ever played in the Austin area. Hopefully I’m correct but I won’t embrace the Right Wing Hate Machine if I am not.

As I have yakked about many, many times, Austin has its own AHL team and they are the development franchise for the Dallas Stars. Most of these guys have the potential to become future NHL players, namely with the Stars. They just aren’t completely ready like the more famous rookies everybody heard of: Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Sydney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin or there isn’t room on Dallas’ 23-man roster to have them up North.

To celebrate their inaugural year and to welcome a higher-level of professional hockey in Austin, the Dallas Stars came to play against our team in a friendly game which probably also determined who in Dallas and Austin would be waived, signed, or assigned to Austin, Dallas or Idaho.

What a view we had third row from the glass behind the net

What a view we had third row from the glass behind the net!

Three years ago I went to one of these match-ups in San Antonio with the Phoenix Coyotes coming to Central Texas to play their AHL partner. As a hockey game, it was a disappointment despite all the big names being present and letting more of them be on the home team for the crowd. My gripe was that neither team tried very hard, Gretzky only stuck around during the second period (he let his assistants run the Coyotes) and it devolved into a series of practice drills for the third period. I will concede having the important players holding back. The last thing I would want to happen is somebody experiencing a season- or career-ending injury for a contest that doesn’t count. However, I was jonsing for real hockey, not a faux all-star game. Dallas versus Austin was completely different. It was a real NHL-level game minus the fighting and both teams changed goalies in the middle of the second period. OK, it was a real NHL game if it were the Stars against the pre-Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins which many people said was an AHL franchise dressed in Pens jerseys for several years. Either way, this was more desirable to watch.

Recently acquired Alex Auld (Turco's new backup) stops the puck.

Our recently purchased camera took amazing pictures in Somara’s hands! You’ll see some shots below which were only possible through its optical lens proving why it’s superior to digital zoom. I’ll close this story with her photographs.

Despite the lopsided score of Dallas 5, Austin 1; both teams played a great game and that's why the Dallas guys are in the NHL. Thus, they better at least make the playoffs unlike last season.

500 Days of Wii Fit

Yesterday I had time to do four virtual laps around the Island before going about my exciting and crazy Saturday (6.5 virtual miles). The Fit’s coach started off by letting me know that I started my account 500 days ago. It would’ve been a better milestone if I were more consistent on using it, like every morning or five days a week. Still, the novelty of this exercise device/video game hybrid hasn’t worn off. My bigger obstacle is getting up early enough to use it without being ultra late to work. I do have over 50 hours logged on it and if I throw in activities outside of the Wii Fit, it’s 65-plus hours. Doing the math now…I’m averaging six minutes per day. Not very good as my Mayo Clinic advisor said the goal should be 30 minutes per day. Well, I did regain the impetus to start again after we returned from our July vacation. Before the trip, I had pulled my weight below the 225 (pounds) mark to wear a smaller size from Lucky Jeans when I bought a new pair at the annual Summer sale. Then I ballooned back up shy of 230 through the rationalization of “hey, I can eat a tad more…I’m on vacation!” This provided inspiration over a few weeks.

My current plan involves tracking the distance from the house to some faraway landmark against my cumulative mileage. The inevitable goal will be the address of our time share in Las Vegas, 1352 miles should I use I-10 for the primary route. I’m realistic. It will take years. Meanwhile, I am on the cusp of the Toyota Center in Houston (it’s where the Rockets and Aeros play) which is 165 miles according to Google Maps. Then it’s the AA Arena/Center/Whatever in Dallas (where the Stars and Mavs play) at 183 miles. I have three months remaining so I think I can come close to Bakersfield, TX along I-10 by New Year’s Eve (324 miles).

This week Nintendo releases the upgrade Wii Fit Plus. I think I will receive a new boost from it for several reasons:

  1. It’s only $20 because we already own the Fit Board.
  2. It provides the means to calculate how many calories are burned through the activities, no more guessing through the Nintendo site in Japanese.
  3. I can customize the workout which will speed up the process. No more delays from all the A-button pushing I had to do with Yoga!

Now if I can only get Nintendo to create something to give me more time to write about all the other games I’ve bought and played over the last year. I will make the effort to blather on Fit Plus when I’m 100 or so days into it.

I’ll close with this joke my friend Bryant sent me. It certainly makes Cooking Mama look easy.
