Fifty pairs so you dont have to waste the energy counting

To celebrate our great reviews at work, we took advantage of the annual Elfa sale with the Container Store. Two more shelves were acquired. Last Fall my brother-in-law Aaron installed the vertical pieces which are the foundation. All we had to do is purchase the horizontal racks and six supporting brackets. I shortened the gap between levels to keep the cats off the lowest level too.

I still more shoes than space but I promised Somara I would cap my collection at 75 yet each rack holds 10 pairs…I theoretically could go to 80.

Happy 101010 or 42!

Too bad Douglas Adams didn’t live to see the day when the answer to everything arrived. For those of you with lives, today’s day equals 42 in binary. It’s a stretch but sadly no major video games, movies, music or anything got released. What a bummer! Beatles Rock Band on September 9, 2009 was rather cool and certainly better than the short-lived Sega Dreamcast on the same date in 1999.

On to November 11, 2011; 111111 or 63. It will be a Friday so I guess there will be a movie “event” on the horizon.

Happy Birthday Chance!

How fitting! During a weekend of celebrating all the good news Somara and I received from work…and may not stop for a while…it’s the birthday of a little guy who probably doesn’t remember us eight years ago in Phoenix. We do though. He was only two so it’s alright, most people’s memories don’t kick in until later in their development.

I think he’s getting to the age when iTunes certificates are fine. The last thing I ever recall giving him was this killer Ben 10 gizmo for kids; a decent replica of the omnimatrix the main character wears.

I know there was talk about his dad (Steve) coming down in the near future for a comic-book function. I need to see if this is still happening and if he’ll be bringing the not-so-little dude in two. Chance won’t be bored at our place. We have a Wii and PS3 with Rock Band gear, including the Beatles and Lego!

Hopefully we’ll catch some photos.

Oddly, this wasn’t an Onion story

A friend sent a quick chat message stating “Fans offer Weezer $10 million to break up.” I reacted with, “Ha ha! Oh The Onion, they can be so witty.” Nope, it was a real story wasting electrons on the Internet. I read a version via The Guardian.

Call me a philistine but I despise Weezer’s second album Pinkerton. I tried to listen to it shortly after it came out and found it to be unbearable; figured this was the sophomore jinx which would prove Weezer was a one-album wonder (see Nirvana, MGMT, Alanis Morrissette). However, this is the record most fans rally around while they turn their noses up at everything else. Puzzles the hell out of me, especially when some critics claim Pinkerton is the founding (or blaming) title for Emo, a genre these same fans dislike.

The break-up founder’s intent and goal are inane. Firstly, dozens of bands disappoint their fans, including myself. This Summer, I bought my first Sarah McLachlan album in 13 years due to her post-Fumbling material being dreadful. It wasn’t the mass appeal she gained by 1997 with Surfacing which bothered me, otherwise I would’ve dropped Duran Duran or the Foo Fighters; the music was really bad. Therefore, I did the smarter thing, I stopped buying and listening to the later stuff. I doubt it affected Sarah’s bank account or career but I moved on, found other singers/writers to fill the void.

Maybe this guy should do the same yet he says he isn’t a fan. Now I really am going to enjoy Weezer’s latest Hurley twice as much and be tempted to buy the extra tracks on iTunes along with the Rock Band packs including “Buddy Holly.” Give the band a little more money to raise the ante since the drummer said they’d take $20 million to make a deluxe break-up package.

Kuroneko’s surveillance

Again, Kuroneko didn’t turn away when I caught her on my iPhone doing something cute. She usually does if it’s recording a movie but not a photo. Rather uncanny.

Somara recently returned the tower to the corner between two windows. Kuroneko and Miette take turns or fight over the top spot. Molly doesn’t bother (she’s not very athletic) and Nemo can’t climb all the way yet he’ll antagonize from lower levels.

The funniest part involving the tower is how Kuroneko gets to the top. There’s an opening like a window, hatch or hole which Miette hops goes through; as any normal cat would do. Kuroneko jumps from a lower level, grabs the outside of the top and pulls herself over. I have no idea why this is her technique but I have never seen this insane cat ever use the “standard” method.

Next week Kuroneko goes in for her annual at the vet. Maybe her vaccinations will “cure” this. Not likely.

Brad Lukowich

Tuesday evening was the Stars’ Meet n’ Greet between the new 2010-11 lineup and the fans (namely season-ticket holders). I was overjoyed to attend. I think I missed last year’s due to a prior commitment, they didn’t have one or I totally spaced. As a fan of the Austin area’s first AHL franchise, I have been doing my homework for the last year on these players. I’m not quite a scout yet I prefer to have an intelligent, fairly informed conversation with them by knowing the great accomplishments of their careers.

The gentlemen in the photo was a player I had been wanting to meet for a while. Unfortunately, Brad was signed to the Vancouver Canucks last year. He got to play for the Stars during the first half of the season because the Canucks and their AHL team (the Manitoba/Winnipeg Moose) didn’t have a spot. Through some odd rules, the Stars were allowed to have him on their roster until Vancouver needed him. Brad got the call around December or January so I missed my chance. However, we true fans were happy for him to get his NHL opportunity.

With his contract over this Summer, he has rejoined the Stars organization. I was elated, especially when the other veteran blueliner Andrew Hutchinson left for the Pittsburgh/WBS Penguins.

By now you’re probably wondering, “how is Brad Lukowich famous?” He has some history with the Dallas Stars, namely being a member of the 1999 Stanley Cup team. He also has a second title courtesy of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 2004 success. Therefore, Brad has twice as many Cup rings as those crybabies Crosby, Kane and Toews. Beyond his championships, he also has 650+ NHL games under his belt so you can bet that many younger players on the Stars listen to his advice.

Knowing about his Stanley Cups, I had to ask him how he spent his turns with the prize. He replied that he partied. Even again in 2004? Oh yeah, one guy drove 40 hours to rock out with him. I thanked Brad and told him about Andrew Hutchinson’s answer. This got him laughing as he replied that everybody drinks beer out of it to celebrate.

It was a pleasure to meet him in person finally and I’m hoping it will be a fantastic season for everyone.

I’m semi-famous!

Unless you’ve been able to avoid it on ESPN, Versus, etc.; pre-season hockey and basketball are underway. This being America and the middle of football (NFL and College) season, it has been pretty easy. Me? I still have functioning widgets to keep me in the basic loop with the alarm clock, work and my personal portable.

Last weekend we attended a pair of pre-season games in our new seats, Jeremy and I are one row closer to the action. You will often see us in seats one and two, row C, section 120 from October 16 to early April 2011. We bought our wives the old row D seats so they can come along more often or invite additional friends (for when they don’t).

Despite the back-to-back losses, we’re all fired up to see the Stars repeat their inaugural success. Getting to meet them during Tuesday evening’s Meet n’ Greet kicked up the enthusiasm meter!

More about it in the next post but first, I want to plug this story and as you read on, you’ll see why. I definitely will be keeping a closer watch via an RSS feed.

Happy belated Birthday Lazz

Yesterday was the birthday of a really great person and incredibly talented artist, my friend Rob who goes by the nickname Lazz (it’s derived from his Italian surname, the best kind to have!).

If you’re into D&D, you often see his work, namely maps.

Currently, Lazz’s work is seen in the Pathfinder line of products which are superior than WOTC’s these days.

Drop him a line should you know him or better yet, buy something he made the map for!

Hopefully, this post will get Lazz’s attention and he’ll contact me as well! I miss him and his sharp wit.

Over half-way there on a “permanent” spot in Vegas!

The last several weeks have been hectic yet one good outcome from the stress was all the recent windfalls of savings/refunds we’ve received. We managed to almost cut our home-insurance premium in half (the sleazebags at Travelers jacked it 19 percent!) and Somara got a substantial refund for the X-rays she underwent in the Spring.

As tempting as it seemed, we could’ve bought at least one iPad (or two unitasker Kindles my friend prefers). Instead we dropped it on our Vegas pad. We’ve been making a stronger effort to pay it off sooner now that it’s our lowest debt plus it will be even more enjoyable when it’s no longer a monthly obligation.

RIP Stephen Cannell

Modern television for better or worse wouldn’t be the same without this guy. Glad to know from his obit that he wrote/created shows I liked (The Greatest American Hero, Black Sheep Squadron) which cancel out the ones I hated (The A-Team, Hardcastle and McCormick). He also didn’t mind doing scripts for programs he didn’t create, rather amazing not only for the ego factor but when did he have the time? Most producers at his level kick back, rake in the money and let underlings do the grunt work. This man probably saw himself according to the (paraphrased) rule my gaming sensei taught me: Cannell saw himself as a guy who wrote television shows for a living, not a guy who’s a television writer.

His greatest contribution to Pop Culture will always be The Rockford Files. One of the best shows about a private detective getting by in Los Angeles during the Seventies. Cannell certainly found a way to immortalize James Garner and his wiseass demeanor.

Even if you found Cannell’s style to be pure cheese and/or formulaic. You have to respect him for writing more than 1000 different episodes over a period of 40 years; overcoming dyslexia (making him a “terrible” student all his life); and continuing to spend at least two hours a day at his trade. He just loved to write. I’m going to miss him more than I expected because Stephen Cannell lived a dream many intelligent people never get to fulfill.

The Flintstones turns 50

The cartoon along with all its side products (vitamins, cereal) have become so ubiquitous it’s hard to believe the original source is older than I am.

Like many kids growing up in the Seventies, The Flintstones was in syndication and practically on TV every week day. Looking back, it didn’t have any great appeal to children other than being an animated show that killed 30 minutes. As an adult, it’s really a cartoon remake of The Honeymooners set in a fictional caveman period with exaggerated physical comedy. Sure it made my brother and me laugh but only when Fred or Barney got clobbered. Now it amuses me and I see it more academically because a major part of its DNA was transfused mostly into The Simpsons (it has almost nothing in common with King of the Hill), which passed The Flintstones‘ milestone on episodes in 1996. I recall Entertainment Weekly rejoiced with a short blurb titled Yabba Dabba D’oh!

I’m still glad the show was created. It was a major leap for Hanna Barbera and this proved that a prime-time cartoon could succeed in America.

2000: Dot Com Meltdown

Today, Apple’s stock is worth $287.37 a share and the company is now the second largest in the world, based upon some measurement probably covering assets, stock value, etc.

A pretty amazing recovery because 10 years ago, the whole stupid dot-com frenzy came to a painful, crashing end. I guess enough people finally realized that AOL acquired Time Warner with moon beams (as Allan Sloan said) and all this Web sites had no realistic plan to make money; all the empty real estate around Austin vacated by garden.com and drkoop.com is long gone.

Sadly, Apple was caught in it the resulting panic and the stock got cut in half. I wasn’t worried. My employer had (still does) tangible assets so the long term was on its side. The dot coms had…not much, probably their equipment but their “options” transformed into toilet paper.

A decade later, Steve Jobs and I have been vindicated. Apple’s stock has recovered 23-fold if my eTrade account is accurate. I remember it was pretty stagnate at 20-something after the fallout and remained under 30 for well over a year. This Spring, I bought my remaining option. To my surprise, I had two since there was a split I missed hearing about. That’s how I got my 23 which would also be a 2200% increase in value.

Good thing he wasn’t reading text messages

Co-worker/Star Wars fan Chris mentioned this little gem on the hazards of flying a snub fighter while eating fast food. Let that be a warning to you aspiring Jedi Knights!

Fall arrived early and Vegas 2005

According to Jose’s last FaceBook posting and some quick text-based messages, he and Nancy are currently driving in I-10 which would be the westward highway out of Florida via the panhandle. Optimistic about a quick visit, I asked if they were head for Houston. From there they could go North via I-45 to Big D, Northwest via 71 to Austin (the best choice!) or seriously detour with more of I-10 to San Antonio, then go North on I-35 through Austin and eventually hit Dallas.

It was “no” on any hopes of I-10 any further than Louisiana. The goal was to make it further North and take I-20 to Dallas; the route I know Somara and I have taken from our 1999 road trip.

Bummer.

At least I remembered that on this day five years ago, we met up in Las Vegas to party down with his friends Glenn and another gentleman I can’t remember. I do recall this guy was a PR friend of Jose’s from high school, he caused friction with Glenn and he brought along his dad. I arrived first so I spent a couple hours trying to stay awake in McCarron’s baggage claim using the airport’s free wireless to write on my blog-based site while it was in its infancy. Once the Hoser showed up, the party got rolling! A fantastic time was had by all and damn it was hot out there.

This morning, all the rain from Saturday finally brought its “reward.” The outside temperature was in the upper Fifties/Teens and I had a sore throat…nice. Our house will need a couple days of us opening the windows to air out the insulation and adjust, otherwise, the AC will keep kicking in when we don’t need it.

Fall in Central Texas is a favorite time here. The climate is great. It’s not too hot, nowhere close to being cold and the moisture doesn’t contribute to the discomfort. Best of all, the central-air isn’t kicking in all the time, raising the noise level in my house.

Hopefully Jose and Nancy will give further updates on their progress through the Southern Land That Time Forgot or The Party of No’s Stronghold #1.

I need a shirt that says, “I’m off the clock.”

At my primary job, I wear my badge on a lanyard. That way I can find it easily and not worry about losing the darn thing. It’s long enough to reach over for a reader to let me into the vital areas I need to enter Apple. After work, I continue wearing it until I get home. Then I hang it on a hook we have with the keys. Easy to locate. Recently I decorated the lanyard element will these cool pins from Waterloo Records and Freebirds. Most are favorite bands: Roxy Music, David Bowie, Dead Weather, Deathcab For Cutie and T Rex.

I often still have it around my neck when I go shopping before home. This only becomes awkward when I’m at Waterloo Records. Occasionally other shoppers ask me questions, thinking I’m an employee. Flattered, I show them the Apple element and tell them, thanks but I can just offer an opinion.

Today I didn’t count on being approached for technical support by complete strangers yet I think this shirt is to blame. Firstly, it’s red which probably wasn’t a smart move at Target. The other was it saying “Nerd.” Thus, the one older lady asks me, “are you a nerd?” Puzzled, I said, “No. I just like the cartoon character.” Unfazed, she continues to ask me about getting a backup solution for her new computer. Somara is busy shopping and I’m not having any luck finding what I was interested in so I figure, sure, I can try. “What do you have?” It goes downhill from there. “A Dell portable with Windows 7.” I explain that I’m probably not a good source being an Apple employee; the best solution is get a refund, buy a MacBook and an external hard drive, problem solved. However, I quiz her further. It seems in order to save dough, Dell blasts the drive and tells their customers they need to immediately image the contents, OS and all. There’s no restoration media, OEM version of Windows, zilch. I lead her and her friend to the hard drive aisle. I find a decently priced Maxtor hard drive which is 1 TB in size. The box states it includes software to do what she wants (I have no idea if it works though). This results in a comment of, “I work at UT so I can get that cheaper down there.” Fist of Death is rising now. I closed with a suggestion, “Why don’t you ask ACITS (what UT’s IT department used to be called when I had friends working there) and see what they use?” I follow it up with a quick lecture on the importance of rescuing what’s vital since I listed the most common files my friends’ recovery business gets. I close with the caveat about backing up what she doesn’t want to lose or it’s $400.

Was I wasting my time? Probably. It reminded me of the futility on helping my mother with her Mac regarding anything. At least my father had a clue being a real IT/programming person.

Next time I wear my cool Dexter’s Laboratory shirt, it needs a corollary like this one.
